The "salamanders" were scorpions! They move horizontally and turn any mushrooms they touch poisonous. If a centipede hits a poisonous mushroom, they'll B-line it for the bottom of the screen, so taking out poisonous mushrooms becomes very important!
The things that move down vertically are fleas. They just spawn mushrooms behind them. If too many come down, mushroom alleys create roads for the centipedes to reach the bottom quicker.
I'd love to see Game Grumps play the 3D Centipede game for the Playstation 1! That was a pretty fun 3D platforming shooter. I think it'd make for an excellent series. :)
The "salamander" is supposed to be a scorpion. It poisons the mushrooms (changes the color). The centipede kept dive bombing Arin because it hit the poison mushrooms.

One of my local Mexican hole in the wall restaurants near me used to have this game as an actual arcade machine in their restaurant.

Im so excited Dan commented on the artwork! My dad was the one who drew and designed that when he was a graphic artist at Atari back in the day.
This run of shows, let's call it the "Atari Grumps" is one of my favorites. They are being so silly and funny it's hard to not cry laughing. I hope I see more of this series.
its pretty easy to not cry laughing because its not as funny as you're making it out to be. they've had WAY better playthroughs. this is pretty ok, but geez dude, calm down.

Did anyone else play Centipede 3D for Windows 98? They expanded the lore in that, you're piloting a magic-powered hovercraft to fend off a wave of insects that resurges every 100 years with the Queen.
I had a copy of the game, but we could never get it to actually work past the first cutscene

I've been wanting to see them play these old Atari games for SO LONG.
Only I was hoping to see them play a bunch of 2600 games, not the arcade versions. Which they could still totally do some time in the future, so I'm enjoying this quite a bit as well.

I love how they never seem to notice that the scorpion poisons every mushroom it touches and that's why the centipede just dropped on Arin. It does that if it hits a poison mushroom.

I got my mom an Atari for Christmas from Bed Bath & Beyond, it was only $40 & comes with like 250 games programmed on it & 2 joystick controllers, she fucking loves it, brings back so many memories for her, I feel do good about it ☺
Centipede is my favorite arcade game and has been since I was 3 when I played it on my mom’s computer. The colors on each level are really nice to look at and still look cool to me. So because of that, this may be my new favorite GameGrumps One-Off. God, I love this game so much.

YESSSS this is the first game i ever played. This goes beyond memory lane. This rails me into another dimension.
I first played this game on an arcade cabinet at a laundromat while my grandparents did their laundry. I enjoyed it then and I still do.
Hey dan and Arin it’s my 18th birthday and it’d be crazy if you guys wished me a happy birthday. You guys have helped me through so much shit. The Christmas when I was 15 years old felt off. Mom was mad at dad and he was trying to fake it like everything was okay. But it wasn’t. Little did they know that I could hear everything that was going on. The constant fights about another woman and dads drinking. I couldn’t put it together though. Mom tried so hard to get him to stop drinking and to quit going behind her back with other women. But he wouldn’t listen. You know what got me through that Christmas? You guessed it. You guys did. I remember that episode of jingle grumps when you guys played some golf game. You guys were the only stability in my life. I know my problems are so small compared to so many others but I wanted you guys to know what an impact you guys made in my life and still do. Thank you for being you and Thank you for bringing happiness into peoples lives. I love you guys like family. Like uncles but not the ones that have tickle fights that go too far. Well maybe those ones but you get it. Love you guys

We had this cabinet in our house growing up (my dad had a deli, stuff happened a lot, long story). I sucked at it so badly, that I would open the door for the coins, click the switch behind the coin drop, and mess with the program sprites more than play the game :) Made silly pictures that are lost forever...because it was the 80s. And I didn't have a good camera....or the forethought to bother with a picture... i'mdonenow...

When the salamander crosses the screen, it turns all the trees it crosses. If the centipede hits one of those turned trees, it goes straight down. That's both why you need to kill the salamander even though it doesn't give you points and also why the centipede sometimes comes straight down and fucking wrecks Arin.
I don't think I will ever be bored of this channel.

The "Salamander" (it's actually a Scorpion) poisons the mushrooms it comes in contact with. If a centipede touches a poisoned mushroom it will immediately drop down. So it's important to shoot the scorpion right away and any poison mushrooms it leaves behind before the "peeds" touch them...

The “salamander” is a scorpion that poisons mushrooms; once a centipede touches one of the poisoned mushrooms, it drops immediately to the bottom of the screen. I don’t remember if this causes additional centipede heads to start spawning.

For once, Arin was actually right. Millipede (1982) came out the following year after Centipede (1981). Google says Centipede was initially released in 1980, but Wikipedia says it was produced in 1981. Maybe 1980 was when the copyright was gained?
