      The biggest surprise is the fact you can have so much joy and positive energy to share while you know:
      If ONE snare hit goes wrong... a 7000€ mic will be smashed in less than a second 😂
      I'm sure there are good techs out there to repair and maintain all this gear... but still, recording some shitheavy black metal on the top of this must be a pretty anxious and deep experience 🤣🤘🔥
      Huge sound. Huge thanks!

    Thank you! I love Ribbon mics. In a digital world they really warm things up. That and tubes anywhere you can use them. I love using a pair of ribbons in Blumlein but off axis in front of the kit about 6" higher on the stand than the snare to taste, and about 3-5 feet in front of the kit depending on the room. One capsule faces the outside edge of the snare closer to the high hat and the other capsule faces the floor tom. Looks like a cross but more like an "X" shape. I have tried this with inexpensive Ribbon mics from Shiny Box, and really nice Coles 4038s. Coles sound better. This set up gives me a great overall drum sound of the entire kit. It takes a bit of adjusting to taste but once you find the sweet spot it's awesome. For your kick on this track, you could have put a ribbon mic outside the kick drum on the beater side for capturing the attack instead of the inside one, and the one you put outside the front of the kick, AEA A440 did sound amazing. Well done.

      @@KohleAudioKult Have a bunch. Our Shure KSM313 mics can handle things inside with no considerations (and the back side has a nice top end boost), and the Samar VL37 pair both work great with with either a wind sock or at an angle. We even have an R44 that works great on kicks with no res head, but it needs a REALLY high headroom pre.

    • @tomnaumann2104
      @tomnaumann2104 7 месяцев назад

      @@KohleAudioKult Yeah, the ribbons in the Shure ribbon mics are made of a proprietary material that is supposed to be fairly indestructible. The KSM 353 was actually designed as a purpose kick mic to sound like a mix of a dynamic and U47. FYI, before Shure purchased the company, the KSM 313 and KSM 353 were originally manufactured by Crowley and Tripp with the model names Naked Eye and El Diablo, respectively, and you might still find some C&T marketing materials online. When I last looked about 5 years ago it was easier to find marketing material on the C&T than the Shure versions.

This sound could work on some Doom Metal, and any other rock genre. Ribbons don't always mean "vintage", and I don't think they get as much use as they deserve anymore. Great job with mic placement. @@yoco93cro Normally when you have two similar mics recording the same sound in different settings, you'll get phase cancellation issues. • @yoco93cro
      @yoco93cro 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@GloveBunniesVideos I think the only thing that matters in that case is that the mics are placed coincident, I don't think microphone type can have such a influence as resulting waveforms can either be in phase or not (or at various degrees). How is it that the room mics aren't 30-40ms delayed from the close mics? My room mics always have phase issues.

      As soon as the room mics are a few meters away from both the kit and the close mics, phase usually doesn’t matter anymore.
      It’s much more important between close mics and overheads where the kit/mic vs mic/mic distance is much closer.

    The swimming pool video was great, but don’t you want to replace your swimming cap with a beanie by now? You could also consult with Herr Starr other stylish hat options.

    I think the ribbons worked great for the overheads, rooms, and snare bottom. The toms were decent, but I think the snare top was lacking. The kick out was decent, but I wasn't a fan of the dynamic kick mic at all.

    I prefer the $99 SM 57 on my snare instead of the $7000 microphone crazy!!

      Not all of this is “real world” stuff. I’m not gonna put a 7k mic on the snare either. It’s still interesting how amazing this mic sounds.
      Download the multitracks!

    Sounds like you’re gonna need to go back and record some samples for yourself if you didn’t already 👀😂

    Great video
    I love ribbon mics, and can't live without them
    Since you used the Telefunken M82 on the kick, I highly recommend you try the Shure KSM313 ribbon mic. It's a great kick mic (and a great mic for literally everything) and the ribbon will not get damaged at all 👊🏻
