Tricks, Secrets, Glitches, & More in Delfino Plaza in Super Mario Sunshine

- Time to tackle the hub of Super Mario Sunshine!
This is a series where we take a stage, level, or whatever, and dissect the most interesting bits and bobs. Delfino Plaza is super broken (I'd like to think so anyway), so there's a lot of unexpected findings. There's also way too much to cover in one video, so let me know what needs to make an appearance in part 2!
Also if it's not clear, SOME spoilers.
We'll be going over:
Secrets: Uncovering the stage's most well hidden secrets. And I don't mean Shines and Blue Coins!
Exploits/Tricks: Not quite a glitch, but a move that does take advantage of the game in unexpected ways
Glitches: Wall clips and other wild game malfunctions.
"Tips for developers": You don't really need gameplay tips in the hub world, so we're going to give the developers tips on how to improve their game ;)
I figured out a number of these on my own, but most of these come from the community this time, especially Rocket Storage and Invisible Delfino Plaza. A few of these were suggested by commenters, so thank you!
This series still needs a name change! Perhaps I'll just go with Particular Spaghetti. It has a nice ring to it.

Actually, the "Exhausted Pianta" DOES share a voice line with another Pianta, although that's assuming they're not the same one. In Gelato Beach's "Red Coins in the Coral Reef", the ornithologist Pianta uses that voice line.
Fun Fact:
The 100 coin shine in the box would crash the game on the Japanese version due to not having a valid position to spawn to.

I'm actually about to finally get every shine in this game. Perfect timing.
Oo I actually just remembered something from when I was playing this morning! In Noki Bay, I kept on swimming near the barrier of the level. I could tell the game was pushing me back, but I had to find the blue coins so I jumped and ran on the shore for small segments to go forward. I actually ended up seeing the out-of-bounds area of the level, it was neat. Great video, I'm surprised there was stuff I didn't know about yet on here.
That current is one of the silliest ideas; did Nintendo think players would just give up when the current pushed them back? Ha ha, no way!

Just finished your Pianta Village video after stumbling across is by chance. I LOVE these videos uncovering the secrets of Super Mario Sunshine. This game was my childhood and I'm definitely sending these both to my friend who I used to play SMS with when we were younger. Some of this content is gonna blow their mind, that's for sure.

In the Japanese version, getting 100 coins in the Secret Tall Grass Room causes the game to crash. This is because they hadn't set a position for the Shine to fly to in this area. In all other versions, there is a position set, allowing you to get the Shine.
I think when you're on Yoshi, you can aim yourself when getting thrown, allowing you to miss the window entirely, removing the risk of hitting the Shine in that room when trying to exit.
And finally, fun fact: the hard version of the Il Piantissimo race in Pianta Village has the AI actually utilize the roof sprint technique when climbing the tree.
How interesting! I imagine they fixed it in the other versions when they heard of the crash. If you try using cheats to get 100 coins in the "Red Coins in a Bottle" episode, the game crashes there too.
Oh yeah, you can do the sprinting thing in Pianta Village! I never connected the dots there.
Why would you even need a Yoshi for that, though? I thought the Chuckster only threw you into that room if you talked to it at a very specific angle. I’ve definitely seen it miss when watching playthroughs of this game
Fun fact:
The walk out of bounds glitch in the plaza at the fruit stand pole is very consistent. Simply walk straight into the wall, then change your angle until Mario doesn't hug the wall and just walks across it, then with this angle, hit the wonky piece of collision, and congrats, you are out of bounds.
This works with any nozzle, Yoshi, and anything in Mario's hands.
No backwards turnaround, no fancy fence gate, just roughly a good angle and full walking speed.
That was very interesting, especially since I'm not very familiar with Sunshine. :)

Yeah, most videos I watch are from smaller RUclipsrs. Not for any real reason, it just so happens that a lot of my favourites are underrated.

Invisible Isle Delfino is one of my favorite glitches in the game!! It was one of the first glitches I ever successfully performed and I was so delighted to see I'd done it.

Love the videos! Here’s a trick I learned from one of AverageTreys videos- the pianta who has a blue coin to give you after you save them from being on fire- you can actually get his blue coin early. He’s walking near the polluted piranha plant that’s covering bianco hills. If you slide the goop to him, and have him get sucked into it, and save him, he’ll give you the blue coin!

for the infinite life trick, if you speak to the guy on the roof from a different angle he'll throw you outside of the house with the shine, so you wont't have to get out! Even easier :D

One tiny glitch that I use is clipping into the turbo nozzle shine room by clipping into it by putting a fruit next to the wall and then sliding down the wall towards the fruit.
Clipping with fruit is great! I didn't get this one, so I'll have to give it a try!

I love all of your videos! They have such high quality and I hope to see your channel grow in popularity in the coming months. Also, love the social media idea! I feel like Twitter is the best form of social media for RUclipsrs, at least in my experience.
Something to note about clipping into the cannon before unlocking Pinna Park. You can actually just ground pound the pianta and clip through him. No fruit or fancy glitches needed.

I cannot believe the stuff in this video. I thought I knew everything there is to know about Sunshine, but k stand corrected. Especially that emblem above the goopy piranha plant. I think you're the very first person to ever see discover that. Good job PM, keep on making these same kinds of videos.

I have a small trick that maybe could be used for the next episode. You actually don't need to launch into the bottom right slot of the Pachinco machine. Instead you can use the hover nozzle to hover over the slope that would normally stop you from doing that. Then try running or hovering up the slope behind it. You will eventually be able to line up with the red coin slot. From there just use the hover nozzle one more time and you'll be able to get the red coin without risking Mario's life.
Oh man, that "or maybe some way to unlock waluigi" at 3:58 caught me off guard and actually made me laugh out loud lmao.

I actually spent a little bit doing the death river under water glitch and you can jump and collect the red coins as long as you dont fully exit the water. Then with a very precise rocket nozel blast you can collect the 7th red coin and land on the edge of the river where you can do a another rocket blast and land at the end get the last red coin and collect the shine. So yeah you could say that's harder than doing it normally but I wouldn't agree. (Also love the content!)

I'm not actually sure if someone had already said this but there is a very consistent setup clipping through the room under the bell using the coconut. Now this along with some studying the location os the shines and the initial location of mario at the start of the game and during peach kidnap scenes, There can be a way (definitely not the fastest in any way), to access Pinna park early and making every stage in the game single segment

Fantastic Cool video, Particular Mushroom. Might not be able to do much, but can you do anything weird with the rocket/turbo nozzles in the Sandbird section? I always loved the red coins secret in the sky plain thing (with the 38 year search for the bird). That place is relaxing and nice and felt like a nice hidden place to just hang out in. That ledge in the turbo slide secret is insane. I've never seen that before, and I've played through SMS several times! Super cool!
Yeah if I had to pick a secret base I'd put it there, easily. I'll definitely experiment a lot more with the Sand Bird when I get around to Gelato Beach, but so far nothing too notable, other than the 100-coin shine. I was quite upset that you can't get to the towers in the distance due to an invisible wall.

I Think "Pianta Village", "Pinna Park", & "Sirena Beach" Are All Accessed By Falling Down Into Something.
Actually the pianta at 5:35 is ALSO heard by one pianta in episode 6 of Gelato Beach. Coincidentally, he is also talking about a bird.

And interesting fact about the flooded isle delfino is when you are walking underwater, you can spray a part of the sand to reveal a star sprite silhouette to pop up a coin.
And another trick is to get to pianta village before stepping into the cutscene when you fight the second painted piranha plant, with a well time triple jump.
And one final trick is for speedrunning, there's a way to clip into the tower with the weird looking yellow cheese goop near the entrance to pinna park. If you have enough shines, you'll see the cutscene where peach is on the bowser like boat. You can skip the cutscene by doing a series of jumps and sidesteps to get out of bounds and die before the cutscene starts, while it starts, and that confuses the game to skip the cutscene.
Just some helpful tips and tricks and secrets in delfino plaza part 2 if you ever make it.

Pinna Park, but Ricco Harbor is fine and relates a bit to Delfino Plaza... And Discord is a good/easy social platform
A bit similar to your fruit trick, but when I was younger, I constantly did a glitch where I ground-pounded inside of the Cannon while the pianta was still there. I would always spray the pianta while inside.
After a few months, even more glitches have been discovered. Well, only one, but it’s game-breaking. It basically allows you to get to the top of the world map without even needing to use the Rocket Nozzle. You just need a banana and the room the chuckster throws you into. If you banana flip clip into it correctly, you’ll grab that ceiling you mentioned earlier, but the banana will fall onto you and, since your hand’s hitbox is slightly above the ceiling, it will push you out of the building while you’re grabbing the ceiling. Then you’ll be sent to the top of the world map.
Fun Fact about the Clip Inside The Cannon glitch, you can do that even easily with just a simple ground pound. You have to have the pianta in the cannon to do this, but that just means you can do this whenever you want by selecting Missions 1-8 (Except for Mission 2) of Pinna Park.

My vote for next place is Noki Bay. One thing I found is you can swim around the structures by using the hover nozzle(also possible in other places with water such as Pina Park). There's a current to push you back but u can jump out of water, hover a bit, then land back in water and quickly jump out so you don't get pushed back
12:58 You can do this by just swimming down anywhere on that gate thing. I've found it best is you hold forward and swim down into it, then as soon as it's over do it again. You should clip either into the sewers, into that pool of water, or into the ocean. To get into the ocean hold forward the whole time. And for rocket storage you can just full click R and hold it until it's around the top of the water tank sprite, now let R go to just above a full click and it will work the same from there meaning just siede step off of a ledge.

I checked every glitch about super Mario Sunshine and nobody found a glitch that I found and it's a great glitch

I know I'm late, but there's a way to clip into Sirenna beach using a fruit and specific positioning at any point in the game. With this in mind, what this means is that, technically speaking, and aside from a handful of shine sprites in Delfino Plaza, you can technically beat the entire game backwards (as in the order you go through areas on Isle Delfino is reversed).

I just found out that roof sprinting trick works on all slopes if done correctly. I performed it on the secret of ricco tower level and got some extra speed on the turning blocks.

I performed the death river shortcut by spin jumping yoshi into an open window at an angle which clipped me through the building and into the underworld, at which point jumping high enough got me to the bit where you can walk around underwater, which allowed me to ride yoshi underwater.
Pachinko early was already possible with a precise spin jump + hover, its my usual method of doing it. And ground pounding the Pianta also goes right through him, and you can clip into the death river during the flood with the log next to it that appears during the flood. Ground pounding if you fail Rocket Storage is also a bad idea, as it hinders your next storage unless you do a regular jump afterwards.
Though unlike the Pianta Village vid, there actually was a small amount of shit I never knew, so props to that.
I've had an inkling you could get to Pachinko early with a spin jump but it has not worked for me. And I did not know about the death river clip at all, neat! So much broken stuff in this game!
Its super precise, but possible, a ground pound at the end might be nesicary to gain a small amount of extra height to just hit the loading zone. This game being so broken is literally the only reason I keep playing, its a fun game to push to its limits.
My two cents on social media for you: Twitter. I think it's the most straight-forward platform to stay up to date with content creators, as well as to share comments. (Also it's the only one I use so I wouldn't be able to follow you anywhere else lol)
Little note about the Canon Glitch.
You could actually go through the pinata and into the cannon with a ground pound, which is MUCH easier than finding a fruit and walking all the way over there.
The same goes for the one at Pinna Park, too.
