I had low expectations for this movie, but saw it in the theater. Amazingly good. Perfectly written, cast, and acted. This is one of my favorite movies. Just behind Major League, or tied, as best modern comedy movie.
Major league is fantastic. Though I do have to point out that it came out in 89 so idk if a 34 year old movie can be considered modern. Galaxy quest for that matter is 24 years old. Both are great, I'm just not sure what qualifies as modern in this case.
Galaxy Quest is an underrated masterpiece from the 90's, and one of the best Sci-Fi action adventure movies ever. It's Tim Allen's best as an action hero, Allan Rickman's (RIP) best as a supporting good guy, and among Sigourney Weaver's best.
Okay, settle down. It was a fun movie, but let's not get carried away. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch, nor is it anywhere close to being the best work by Weaver or Rickman. As for it being "Tim Allen's best as an action hero," what other action hero roles has he played?

@@johnbaxter3092 As a long time Sci-Fi fan, I cannot begin to describe how much I love this movie! I don’t think you understand all the subtle references this movie makes (perhaps you do, but don't care) - humor is a very important element for me. If you prefer more serious/horror movies that is fine - it is subjective. I respect that you don’t think it is great, but I can only say I beg to differ! Each genre has its charm, and as a comedy Sci-fi this really is brilliant in my option.
bigevileworldwide1 - That may be the dumbest most off the mark comment I have ever read on the internet. It is not mocking the genre or the fanbase but rather respectfully acknowledging it albeit with humor.
@bigevilworldwide1 it's not a deconstruction or satire of the genre, its a parody.. parodies use material they love and make a joke out of it while still paying proper homage to the source material. Great parodies encapsulate and cherish what makes it great as well as what makes it weird.
This is a great movie. Blends comedy, drama, sci fi, action, and homage brilliantly. Cast is fantastic in it. Everybody involved really made the most of the concept and script. Perfect for the whole family really, something for everyone to enjoy. Fun time and heartfelt.
So true, and you just wonder will Hollywood ever learn. Have a good and enthusiastic cast, an inspired capable directer. And no interference of the suits who know best and you end up with a good product.
Best line for me was about their response to the incredulity of “Gilligan’s Island” being a “historical document” saying with straight faces “Oh those poor people”...the film was a classic - thanks for the background to it...
@@mattbutts8794 agreed and after he said I don't even have a last name zoom in on the red shirt and then pan out and everybody in the group is looking at the red shirt but they don't say anything maybe they look at each other
I remember my family looking for a movie to see in theatre. We saw the movie poster for Galaxy Quest at the theatre and decided to give it a chance. It became one of our favorite movies ever.
Everyone always joked about the Star Trek 'redshirts'. If you are beaming down with the capt and the chief engineer, and you are wearing a red shirt... you know you are dying. Guy knew his fate. Poor guy did not even have a real first name ha ha
I can see what Harold Ramis meant by “don’t cast anyone from sci-fi”. If Spiner, Frakes, Stewart or anyone from Trek was even in the background, it would pull me out of the film immediately. But Alien is SUCH a different film than either the fictional Galaxy Quest show or this movie that I never once thought “Oh. It’s Ripley.”
Well, except for the aliens. And starships. The satirical fan-base. Time travel. Severed human parts. Pyrotechnics. And the premise seemed also quite different…the only thing I can really think of is they were both very funny.
Ummm a group of actors are thrown into a real life situation that mirrors what they play. They don't realize at first that things are real. Then they reach the point where they realize that everything is real and they have to stop being cowardly actors and really do what they've been pretending to do all these years? You really don't see those similarities?
Good video. As comprehensive as it was, you left an important detail out. The weekend it was released, I believe the studio or the distributor and the largest movie chain at the time had a dispute, which caused Galaxy Quest to not be in a lot of theaters across the country. Despite there being a theater where I lived, we had to drive forty minutes to see it. I'm not sure how much this cut into it box office, but I remember it was credited at the time as severely hurting the numbers.
This movie literally saved my life. Just before watching it for the first time, my wife had commented, "If you say that "Darmok and Jilad at Tenagra" crap one more time, I shall kill you." I owe Alan Rickman a huge debt of gratitude.
@Dom LS1 I think it's only within the last couple of years that I've seen it. I don't know why it wasn't on my radar until now. Perhaps because I thought it was a spoof film but it isn't. While there are obvious references, it is more akin to the Three Amigos, people who are just actors put into a real life situation.
Sigourney Weaver never looked so good as she did in this show. and Tim Allen? He was perfect for this role he is after all the one and only Buzz Lightyear. Alan Rickman with his deadpan comments was perfect.
Every actor in this movie did their part in making it great. And, not to downplay or disrespect any of them; but a re-make of this movie without Alan Rickman as Alexander Dain WOULD be disrespectful and nothing short of a crime.
I remember the first time I saw Galaxy Quest. I'd never heard of it, before, and the blurb for it on Nextflix sounded interesting. I am so glad I took the time to watch this gem of a movie, and it will always remain a favorite of mine. (I have since lost track of how many times I've seen it, but I fully intend to buy the DVD so that I can watch it, again, whenever the mood strikes.)
"We gotta get out of here before one of those things kills guy!" "Is there air? You don't know". Ah, the unending joy I receive from this movie. I love it.
The first quote from "Gwen" Sigourney Weaver is one of the funniest lines of any movie ever that goes unnoticed by most. Second would be off of "The Water Boy" when Paul says that Bobby is the heart and soul of the team and then John adds "And the only one who could've passed that test"!
I had been sick for several days and was feeling cruddy. My sister was bored and wanted to do something. Our folks were stressed due to their jobs but felt sorry for me being stuck in bed for almost a week, so we decided we'd go to a movie. Mom wanted to see something else, but I really just wanted something fun & silly so we decided "Galaxy Quest" would be an okay enough experience to be worth the cheap matinee ticket prices. We periodically *still* talk about how much we all enjoyed this amazing movie. :-)
I’m old enough to have watched the original Star Trek series while I was in high school - Galaxy Quest was a great, wonderful movie - it was fun, entertaining and had great characters. It was a rare gem found among a long list of mediocre and sometimes awful product that comes from Hollywood.👍👍🚀🚀👍👍
Linn Haramis : I so agree! This movie is fantastic. I also enjoyed the original Star Trek series as a teen in high school and my dad really liked it too........when it was cancelled, he was very ticked-off.
I am a bit younger, but my mom was the Star Trek fan in the family and I remember her sitting us down with her so she would have an excuse to watch the show. LOL
To be honest, we love this parody, only because it respects the source and its fans. Back then it was extremely easy to make some terrible "comedy" which laughs out of everything you love about Star trek, and uses dumb one-dimensional stereotypes of fans. GalaxyQuest was a great because it avoided quick and easy mockery. Remove all jokes, and you still get a good Sci-fi movie on its own.
I love 💘 this show. Alan Rickman's deep voice still gives me chills. He is definitely missed! RIP Alan! Tim Allen is so under rated, his dry sense of humor is priceless.
i agree they both did so well in the film....when Alan Rickmans character finally accepted his role during the death of an alien and fan of him and he said the motto.....i couldnt believe i was feeling emotional during a comedy like this.....Alan was so amazing in anything he did he could switch on a dime and make you really feel the moment....and the chemistry or anti-chemistry i should say between Tim and Alan on the show was so funny.
@@mdub2000 It seems obvious, but having good actors who can convey that heart is really key. to a film's endurance. Marvel is smart not to rely exclusively on CGI and smart ass dialogue in its MCU, and bring in great actors even for relatively small roles - e.g. Mark Ruffalo, Sam Jackson - or literally small roles - i.e. Paul Rudd.
@@aquamarine99911 I agree....i loved all those actors even before they got into the MCU....especially Mark Ruffalo i was such a big fan and the whole thing he went through regarding the brain issue he overcame. Good actors can make a great script legendary by how they convey the spirit of that character.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I don't know how they assembled such an incredible cast with such a limited budget. It still holds up quite well.
I kind of wish they had made that TV series that was in development in 2015, but after the death of Alan Rickman in 2016, the series was scrapped, and even Sam Rockwell said it was a good concept, but it would never be the same without him.
That aside, it would be kinda cool if they did a thing in memory of Rickman. Maybe have the characters be mourning the loss of the actor, give reference to the actors other roles that were overlooked due to his popularity on the show (in a non comedic way) and get licensing for what they can to edit in imagery of actual Alan Rickman footage. If done right, could be a great way to honor him, while acknowledging he won't be joining us for the next part of this journey
"Am I to late for Alexander's panic attack?" "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy" "But the animal is inside out" "And it exploded" "This episode was badly written!" Really is one of my favorites and very underrated. Great story and direction, plus the cast put it on the line and delivered a hilarious comedy that turned into a pretty damn good movie by the end.
I LOVED this movie. One of the most UNDERRATED flicks out there. A completely original parody idea. In an age where EVERYTHING is copied these days, this movie was super refreshing.

@@PapiSorrels One example is how Futurama did it famously with DOOP, with star captain Zap Branigan and Kiff, as did a lot of other cartoons and comic books.
I'm glad they never made a sequel - it would've been impossible to top perfection. Galaxy Quest was simply brilliant - I must have watched it a dozen times now.
I could see them do a sequel, and even have it revolve around Nesmith having to deal with Alexander Dane's (Dr. Lazarus) unexpected death, how it soured his passion for the revived (and now cancelled) Galaxy Quest show, and how the new adventure has to get him over this loss.

Fun Fact/Story: After I watched this with my friends back then we decided to watch it a second time with the alien language on. Yes, the DVD had language track for the entire movie where everyone is speaking in this hilarious alien voice! So, we were watching it and after a while the novelty wears off. Since we already know what will happen and what they say, we watched it as if this was our mother tongue. Then someone entered the room that didn't know the movie ... he watched us for some seconds, then shook his head, walked backwards and closed the door without saying anything! He probably thought "Oh these nerds, what kind of silly crap are they doing again, who will ever understand them?" :)

Okay, johnny boy, you calm the eff down, now. 227 likes to your 3. You may be right in a lot of ways, but so may the other guy. I love this movie a lot, just like Down Periscope. Very entertaining. Fun to watch. And I acknowledge whole-heartedly that just because a majority doesn't mean it's right, and that a lot of people may not open the replies section to most comments, 227-3 is quite a significant rift. Nice breakdown, however, on your part.
Bloody brilliant movie. It was on free to air telly last night. We also have the dvd in the cabinet.
I love the fact that Galaxy Quest ranked higher in the list of Star Trek movies than some of the actual Star Trek movies.
It's the second best Start Trek Movie. Just ahead of the one with the whales and just behind Wrath of Khan.
imo
@bigevilworldwide1 Literally could not be more wrong. Have you even watched the movie?
bigevileworldwide1 - That may be the dumbest most off the mark comment I have ever read on the internet. It is not mocking the genre or the fanbase but rather respectfully acknowledging it albeit with humor.
@@delta7890 I appreciated star trek more after watching this film.
@bigevilworldwide1 it's not a deconstruction or satire of the genre, its a parody.. parodies use material they love and make a joke out of it while still paying proper homage to the source material. Great parodies encapsulate and cherish what makes it great as well as what makes it weird.
Alan Rickman was a genius, I love his performance!
He was great in everything he was in, more often than not carrying the whole story, if not at least elevating it significantly.
Outstanding movie, outstanding cast. Their enthusiasm came shining through. Alan Rickman, God bless you. You are sorely missed.
This is a great movie.
Blends comedy, drama, sci fi, action, and homage brilliantly.
Cast is fantastic in it.
Everybody involved really made the most of the concept and script.
Perfect for the whole family really, something for everyone to enjoy.
Fun time and heartfelt.
Exactly how I think of this movie. I totally agree with everything you said.
So true, and you just wonder will Hollywood ever learn. Have a good and enthusiastic cast, an inspired capable directer. And no interference of the suits who know best and you end up with a good product.
The Orville is the true homage.
Most of all it's predicated on love and respect for the fans, instead of a desire to mock, belittle, and lecture them

I own the film, and when Rickman says his catchphrase to the dying alien who idolized him, I tear up. Every time. Every. Single. Time.
That's my favourite moment of the movie.

On the other side of the coin, the aliens running kills me every time. Stay well.🙂
It so cliche and yet. Like you i'm like omg the dust in this room. I'm not crying your crying!!!!
Lyon Reese I do too. I wait for that spot just so I can hear Alan Rickman speaking those heartwarming words.
Miss Weaver has a habit of being unconventionally sexy in just about every role she's had. She is one attractive woman.
And looks AMAZING as a blonde!!!!!!
Like I said, a sexy blonde in a catsuit version....what's not to like.
Here...here!
You should see her in the movie "Ice Storm"...….HOT!!
Somewhat uncomfortably in Snow Cake. Oddly enough, also starring Alan Rickman.
Hands down one of the greatest movies ever produced. Thank you Galaxy Quest cast, for providing us with this awesome homage to everything Trek.
Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite movies. It's pure gold!
Best line for me was about their response to the incredulity of “Gilligan’s Island” being a “historical document” saying with straight faces “Oh those poor people”...the film was a classic - thanks for the background to it...
Best line for me was Weaver totally buying into Sam Rockwell's "redshirt" mentality: "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"
My favorite line was when Guy says, "Can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe". Hysterical! Definitely one of my favorite movies!

Adding the character “Guy” to this movie was genius, they thought of every last detail to get this movie right .
Sam Rockwell just makes everything better. He was perfectly cast.

Galaxy Quest and Tropic Thunder are great comedies with a similar premise and different settings.

Tell it to Coach Tomato
Ummm a group of actors are thrown into a real life situation that mirrors what they play. They don't realize at first that things are real. Then they reach the point where they realize that everything is real and they have to stop being cowardly actors and really do what they've been pretending to do all these years?
You really don't see those similarities?
Galaxy Quest....Still better than 99.9% of modern "serious" Sci-fi movies.
Better than new trek and star wars by a long mile.
@Jeffery Amherst, I totally agree.
Sadly, true.

My aunt lived on Borg Drive in Sandy Utah, back when I wrote TNG.
Jay Bird You couldn’t- because it was a an affectionate TRIBUTE, not a parody! 🙂

Do it now. "Dew it!"
I bought it here on RUclips and have watched it well over 30 times. It never gets old. I still laugh at the jokes and cry at the end when the commander salutes Branden and his friends. By far my favorite movie.
@@Jane-yg3vz Try "Fanboys". It is basically this for Star Wars.
Jane And it is also a movie that, even from a technical standpoint, has held extremely well.
You are in for a treat ! I loved it, I am a proud Sci-Fi nerd, and laughed laughed my ass off hysterically the 1st time i saw this.
The greasy bag of snacks!! Little details like that really made this movie shine.
Loved this movie. Actors playing roles they normally dont is just brilliant. One of the absolut best mix of
comedy and seriousness ever made.
By grabthar's hammer, this was an amazing movie.
By the sons of Warvan, I do agree !
Wait... I thought that was "By the suns of Warvan..." =?
@@tomf3150 Okay - I thought it was Morvan, but it's been a while since I watched it. But I LOVE this movie...
@@MasterSandman You've lost me!
@@ladygroan I thought Warvan was a legendary planet from a multi-sun system!
I seem to remember that the English subtitles put it like this.
Though I could be horribly mistaken...
I've been looking around, and the interwebz is quite divided.
But both "The Hollywood Reporter and IMDB are quoting the line as "...by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!" 🤔
