Michael Anthony didn't get enough credit for all he brought to Van Halen, and he remained loyal and classy long after they treated him shabbily. I'm glad to see Sammy give him a spotlight.
David Lee Roth recently praised Mike on Joe Rogan saying how important his backing vocal was for the sound of the band, saying they didn't have horns, keyboards, etc. So, they filled the gaps with vocals.
@@DexterHavenYou can tell Michael’s abscence in the future albums since there are little to no backing vocals
As a lifelong original Van Halen fan, I have ZERO problem with Michael Anthony singing lead vocals on old VH songs. In fact, I highly encourage him to do that.
Dude on guitar is playing effortlessly.
Im a a stage manager from So Cal. Michael Anthony is one of the COOLEST guys on the planet
I've met him and hung out with him a few times. Yep, one of the coolest, zero ego, badass musicians out there.
Just chiming in to back you up with my own experience. Easily one of the coolest dudes on Earth.
Okay, I have to add this since you guys are chiming in..........I drove a limo in LA for two years while getting my degree. i picked up Michael Anthony at his home to deliver him to the Forum for a Van Halen concert. I think it was 1984 but could have been 85. Anyway, not a long trip, but he rode up front with me! We talked all the way downtown. I have been a fan ever since.
Are you saying you were the stage manager for Van Halen?I guess I will have to talk to Scotty Ross a buddy of mine.
@@oig40203 that sounds like Mike.... Genuinely cool dude.
@@voodoochild1975az As I said, it wasn't a long ride, but it was like giving a buddy a lift. People always ask me if he gave me a tip but I don't remember!
This is the first time I've seen Mike sing a song. I like it.
Michael is a badass plain and simple. His backing vocals on the Van Halen albums were amazing.
Definitely don't forget Eddie sang background also , together he and Michael had great harmony, but Michael's voice is definitely a huge part
Agreed. The Van Halen brothers kinda screwed him over.
Mike could have been the lead singer if he had the charisma of Roth.
Super underrated
he was the glue
Best backing vocalist in rock for sure! Best bandmate too!
The fact that Hagar and Michael still rock together says a lot about what happened between them and Eddie.
You’re 100% correct. Watch any episode of Sammy’s Rock and Roll Road Trip and you can see how he’s revered by everyone. He’s genuinely happy and even more importantly, happy for others. He seems to be an excellent dude and Mike seems to be the same way.
Eddie’s rift with Michael Anthony started because after Sammy quit in 1997, and Van Halen went on hiatus. Anthony stayed friends with and continue to play with Sammy. they became such good friends that when Sammy came back in 2004, as punishment for being his friend. Eddie forced Mike to sign away his rights to the “Van Halen” brand and take a MASSIVE pay cut for the tour
Almost 20 years later, and you’ve never heard Michael Anthony say a word about EVH other than he’s happy, he got to play with his son on stage. Class Act
None of you were there to know what exactly the truth is, or what even really went down.
Only Sam, Ed, Alex, Mike, knows the REAL truth and story. So stop with all the things you THINK you know, because most of what you`ve heard is bullsh*t.
Eddie was a guitar god but a complete and utter ass in real life as is his brother Alex. Sammy and Michael will always go down in history as the heroes not the villains in the 1996 and 2004 breakups.
💯 spot on!!
Love how he sticks to Dave's original phrasing and delivery. A tribute of its own there I feel.
Even when Dave can't🤣
Dave can't sing anymore.
Not only a beautiful tribute to Eddie, but a wonderful chance to hear Mike singing lead for a change.
And GOOD GOD, what a lead !!! 🔥👍
Let's give applause to the brother on the guitar. He's ripping the riffs and providing excellent backing vocals.
Some respect here…that’s Vic Johnson who has been playing with Sammy for almost 25 years.
Didn’t care for the riff when he started
Mike still got it!
Best move he made by hooking up with Sammy, he was so overlooked while playing with VH.
The Dude still has his vocal talent big time.
Killer video!
Agreed
Mikey's vocals were definitely a big part of the Van Halen sound. Before videos, I always wondered who the other guy singing in Van Halen was. Mikey deserves a big share of the credit. Mikey and Sammy doing dual screams in Highway Star is one of my favorites.
I assume even Ian Gillan likes their cover of Highway Star
Judgement day off the f**k record
Michael's vocals and harmonies were an integral part of the Van Halen sound. Anyone who's heard the a cappella bars from "I'm the One" knows exactly what I'm talking about
Definitely way better than Roth
Great Singing But David Lee Roth was
An Absolute Showman
I just want to give a big shout-out for Vic Johnson he's a hell of a guitar player. You rock Vic and your an awesome guitar player love that sound you got
Please. He can barely play this stuff.
@@thefonzkiss Vic is great, no one can play like Eddie but Vic is still an amazing player
@@thefonzkiss who do you suggest? Buckethead?
@@thefonzkiss this isn’t that hard of a song to play
@@thefonzkiss please quit trolling! If you're so great I'd like to hear you play something.
Never got enough credit for what he brought to Van Halen. He bridged the gap vocally between David and Sammy eras, and always provided a killer rhythm section with Alex. True class.
1:26 - 'This one's for you, Eddie!' Anyone else get that right square in the feels?
Especially knowing Eddie had stupid beef with him
I do every single time!!
Duuude.. for real.. I teared up.. RIP Eddie.
Eddie was in a bad place when all that went down with Mike. We will never know the reality.. rip King Edward Ludwig Van Halen the UNDISPUTED HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMP!!! THE GOAT
Holy crap! Michael Anthony still has the rock energy and talent!
Michael Anthony looks healthy! I’m happy for him that he survived getting dismissed so coldly by VH after being a loyal band member for over 20 years. He deserved better treatment but that’s rock n roll.
He’s doing well now. 👏🏻😎🎸
Yes. He got a bad deal especially when you consider that Wolfgang is mediocre at best. Michael’s voice has held up where as David Lee Roth’s has not.
@@tonyvincent9753 Well, he was paid but also disrespected for some unknown reason. Why Was he considered a disposable bass player? He contributed to their sound greatly with his backing vocals.
Wolfgang is average at best.
I heard his solo songs and it’s nothing I care for. I’m not buying his album.
Michael Anthony is a great addition to any band and he seems to be a great guy as well.
So I wish him the best.
Same to Wolfgang.
Agreed. He was treated poorly at the end, but Mike was the better man in all of it. I don't think he ever spoke a negative word. Pure class.
@@TheBigwillistyle
Well, he’s a better man than I. Because I’d complain about it in public. He shows amazing restraint. He did make a good living, I assume but he still deserved better than to be dropped after playing for twenty years loyally. And he was a big part of their sound with his vocals which they missed afterwards.
Classy is right!
His voice has also aged the most gracefully out of all of them
Wow! MA did the song justice and he looks more fit than he ever was in the glory days. Good for him!
Did a great job. Michael Anthony is a very underrated singer
This guy was bedrock to Van Halen, and his vocal sound is one of the secret weapons to all those great songs. So great!
And great job, Vic...as always!
Well there we go. If Sammy has a bad sore throat one night or loses his voice we can have Michael Anthony and the Circle. Michael did an amazing job. They have 2 amazing singers now
100x better than that guy that used to sing for VH! I think that guy does some half ass vegas shows every now and then....
Sammy voice has grown tired
Mike should of song a few Dave songs when Sammy joined the band. Especially the first couple tours
@@jimbarber691 Mike would sing "Somebody Get Me A Doctor" during the VanHagar and VH3 days :-)
Michael Anthony is a classic. One of the greats
DEFINITELY THE BEST TRIBUTE I'VE SEEN MICHAEL ANTHONY DID AN ABSOLUTE AMAZING JOB WE LOVE YOU MICHAEL ANTHONY
"This is for you Eddie
I MISS YOU BROTHER"
Pure Class.
Must miss him like crazy =/
Michael Anthony still has it!! I love that guy!! 🤘🎸🎶
Michael has aged so well. The guy looks a decade younger.
I met Michael on NYE at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas 2012, I did not think it was him since he was so short, but it was him! We talked about 20 minutes, cool dude.
Sammy also . Man I hope Im running around in my 70s..
Dude the way he said this one's for Eddie, I miss you brother... I'm seriously teared up. RiP Eddie. It's amazing he was even here at all. What a man. Michael is pure class and one if the most talented people in Rock N Roll... ✌🖤🤘
Amazing voice after all these years!
i was at this show it was a great setlist sammy still kicking ass at 74!!!!!!!!!
6th row center I was there also. They rocked the house 4sure
MIGHTY MIKE!! A true badass musician with amazing talent!! YOU SOUND THE SAME AS YOU DID 20 YEARS AGO 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Love you MM!!! KEEP PLAYING AND DON'T EVER STOP!!!
68 years old and sounds better than David Lee!!! How? No Autotune here. Kudos to you Sir Michael!
They're all playing and singing so great. Vic...WOW, dude. Big shoes to fill, all round
In a way, Anthony is the “last man standing” in the VH camp…Eddie is in rock and roll heaven, Alex is a recluse, and Lee Roth became something entirely unrecognizable from his days as best frontman on the planet.
I played in a semi successful band. I wrote here and there but mostly played guitar and sang. I was always 100% professional, with a crazy work ethic. My guitar tone, live performances, and recoding's were tight. But just because I didn't write the music I was looked down on. Shame on anyone who ever doubted this mans talent. Cleary a gifted musician.
Vic is awesome!🎸
Glad to see Mike getting the love and recognition that he deserves!
great vocals and event greater performance. Seems to be really enjoying himself.👍👍👍
Michael Anthony reminds me of Maurice Gibb in a way, the guys in the background are the ones who hold it all together, yes. Barry Gibb had the lead vocals and Robin had the unique vocals BUT Maurice had the glue that held it all together, just like Michael, awesome F..ING Vocals
I LOVE when Michael sings because we all know his range and have heard him for so many years. This song is perfect for him, especially the scream at the beginning like he used to do on the VH tours. I need to find a video of the first time he sang it to hear the audience go nuts. Probably in Vegas. I went nuts in Caesars AC for him a few months ago.
Its great to see Mikey still making music, especially after getting pushed out & being gracious about it.you can see he loves music. Not the fame game or the money grab. Life has a funny way of working itself out...lol
I've met Mike and got to bullshit about music over a few beers. Short version, Mike loves music with a deep passion, and thus loves his job. No ego, no attitude, just a music junky living his best life.
He's the kind of musician that will show up to a Van Halen cover band performance... And come out playing for a few songs.... Simply because he likes playing music that much. To him, playing with The Atomic Punks is just.... Fun
Perfect example.... The Sans Halen tour.... Hagar and Roth. Mike wasn't in Sammy's band at that time.... In fact, he was still officially in Van Halen.... But the Phoenix show was his birthday, and what did he want to do on his birthday? Play. So he showed up to the Phoenix show and did some songs with Sammy. As far as I know, the only motivation was .... Fun. That was what he chose to do for fun on his birthday, show up at a concert and play a few songs.
Mikey has plenty of money and no worries...
Phenomenal performance !! Mikey's killin it !!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Long live Eddie and DLR who wrote this awesome song. Lyrics, melody and music!
Not only good voice, but great phrasing.
until I started collecting van halen bootlegs on Napster back in the day.. I never knew it was Anthony doing all those high screams.. dude is a beast.. and he's still got it..
Just watched an old interview of Van Halen, Eddie and and crew had nicknamed Michael Anthony old cannon mouth because he couldn't sing straight into the studio microphones because he drowned out the rest of the guys, they made him stand about 6 feet back while singing!!! AWESOMENESS!!!
He did those high screams in the first 2 albums but it seems like the rest of the guys told him to knock it off by 1980. Mike said he was influenced by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple
Michael Anthony and Eddie Van Halen both sung the high backing vocals in original Van Halen and with David Lee Roth's deep voice vocals it made for an awesome band that was untouchable. Sammy Hagar is Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony is Van Halen always will be, nothing else like the 4 originals and by the way, David Lee Roth doesn't sing Sammy Hagar songs, Sammy Hagar sings David Lee Roth songs 🤘
@@danbosman2246 Brother I couldn't said it better myself
Michael Anthony is my favorite VH member of all time
I came here because Michael Anthony was the harmony of Van Halen.
I’m nobody but I’m a fan from 79 so I’m everybody…
His voice was a integral part of that sound
He looks like he didn’t deserve all that mess he got.
I am glad he came away with some stacks. He is a fckng legend and I hope everyone knows what a class act the guy clearly is.
Eddies guitar playing are shoes that will never be filled but this gentleman on guitar did a fine job.
Great to see Michael healthy and having fun.
I was there, sounded great!!!
What a talent
Michael Anthony = The Peoples Champ
Guitar work was fantastic as well
EPIC MICHAEL ANTHONY
Love it! Mikey's killin it! And Vic!
100 times better than Roth today I guarantee it.
Roth aged like milk left out of the refrigerator
100? More like 1000
Wrong
Anthony has the best voice in the group it’s just soo unique how he chooses to use him self in the band as the guitarist and backup vocals and it just comes through so good and pure.
He has become a fine cheese.
this was the very first concert I have ever been to at 16 years old I never got to see van halen sadly but I think this is just as good one of the best experiences I've ever had the vibration is unreal it goes through out your whole body these guys are so talented best band in the world hands down I hope to be able to see them at least one more time and the people that where there where just awsome everyone got along no fights its like eveyone where friends super cool.
I'm so glad I was there , LOVE the show, I will go see them again . in a heartbeat. EVH , RIP, thanks Sammy , Anthony . Jason and Nic Jones was awesome
Michael Anthony is a force to be reckoned with fa real.
One word. UNREAL!
Great job...Mike's backing vocals were such a big part of the Van Halen sound
Please let me Good afternoon afternoon afternoon hope you Leaserz let me know if if you need n
it
Yea C Mmmmmm you
‘Mmm immm kk

What a great Era of VH. Still sounds great ,even as a lead singer! But those background vocal are a beauty!
Memories of a better time.✌️
That was one song I've learn back in my high school years 1979
Thank you, guys, for influencing me into playing music. I played symphonic band as a kid and got 2 scholarships to study under a great brass player that played with the Boston Pops and Tiajuana Brass. I now play Bass guitar in an all-original band. Could not have done it without you.
Love Michael Anthony
Wow! That was tremendous! Really, really great band.
MA just might be the classiest and humblest guy in rock and roll.
Love this guy, always have
Great!!! Michael Nathony has been key for the VH sound, and this another proof of that.... the only think that I missed, was that Sammy didnt do backing vocals.... Why? All VH songs require them.
Michael's voice is awesome! Nice to see him getting some credit here.
I used to sing n play this on the drums in clubs back in the 80's! This is BADASS!!!😎👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
He was awesome in VH, but I am sure glad he and Sammy are still kicking ass!
That was epic….good vibes time machine….🎸🤘🎶
He did a great job singing that!
Attended 1995 balance tour, Mike, also Alex was really a true foundation for the other front runners, Eddie, Sammy. Alex placed a 20-minute double bass solo that was extraordinary.
Mr Anthony has some serious talent.
Mike kicks ass
From day one Mikey brought to every show.
Dude on the guitar totally nailed that!!
That's VIC Man 🎸
This Rocks!! Missed Michael with VH!! At least I got to see the Original 4 7 times!! First time VH opened for Journey and Montrose.
He sound great! The band sounds awesome!!
Great high register vocalist! One of the very best in the business!Ken Tamplin says that guys like Anthony,Hagar,Delp(Boston),Cetera(Chicago),Hitchcock(Air Supply),Anderson(Yes),Mickey(Starship),Lewis(Outfield)...Never lost their"little boy",high pitched voice as they passed though puberty.VERY rare!!Lucky them!!The rest of us(mainly ME)ended up with a FROG🐸voice!!haha!jk
Go Mikey❤Now sing Where have all the good times gone!!He was Always my fav!!
Goddamn! Seeing Michael like this makes me so happy.
Man, Sam's band is tight. Mikey is incredible, Vic's been with Sammy forever and is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. You got freakin' Jason Bonham on drums and Sam is always killing the vocals, even in his 70's. Vert happy they are keeping Van Halen alive for the fans. Means more than they'll ever know.
Michael and Sammy are the bomb 🤘
Sammy and Mike rock!!
Mike singing the old school VH songs is pure gold!!
Michael Anthony is severely underrated as a bassist and a vocalist
So happy to hear Michael front and center on this one. Always an amazing talent! Thanks for posting the video.
Wow, phenomenal job!
Hundred times better than what DLR sounded like last time I heard him sing it.
He’s the best bass player/backing vocal guy you can find in the business
Great! Thank you Michael
Vick is a badass one hell of a guitar player
He’s a badass look how much fun he was having
The man can sing and play bass!!!!
This is why I will go see them.. they might not play this song.. but they kick ass! Seen them once.. need to see them again. This was so good.
Awesome, thanks so much for sharing this!! I wish Sam would play some guitar on those old tunes, but thank God for Vic! He’s awesome! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Great concert. Nice video too
