    I think they should probe the tomb with high resolution cameras to see it what history says about the First Emperors tomb are correct. Maybe they can find where the actual entrance is located and then open it and send in robotics to find out where the traps are and measure what the atmosphere is like; all that Mercury probably made the interior pretty toxic for people unless they were in Hazmat suits. I think the opportunity to see the inside of this tomb is a captivating adventure for scientists and laymen alike. Go for it China you have the world on the edge of it seat on this one.

      If there are cross bow traps etc inside, the hazmat suits are a bad idea , they have to be arrow resistance which means specially made, just have a robot trip all the traps.

      Of course aslong as there isn't any Vandalism, theft or destruction in places where humans are interred! It's not like they'd be letting a bunch of kids in there.

      @@davidb2331 I suspect,viewed from the perspective of the deceased and their families "vandalism, theft and destruction" would be a fair description of most archaeology. I suspect the length of time between internment and non consensual exhumation makes any fundamental difference to the moral issues. The uncovering of pretty baubles equally is a poor justification. After all, despite the hubris of the media, the public does NOT have a right to know.

    The archeologists are afraid of seeing the same damage that was caused when they first unearthed some of the terracotta warriors when right before their astonished eyes, brilliant colours painted on the statues uniforms and clothing vanished, turning into a greyish, non-descript colour on being exposed to sunlight and oxygen. Only tiny flecks of colours remained that gave them any clues what their original colours were like. There may also have been wall paintings and other art works, that have similarly vanished forever.
    They do not want to see the same thing happen. Archeologists have learned over time that invasive unearthing techniques have destroyed traces of a past that we want to keep in order to learn what was. The discoveries are not just to create a show for the curious. It is for serious learned studies of the past.
    I remember going to the petrified forest in Arizona and seeing the damage that was done in the early 1900s when it was first discovered. Curious explorers had used even dynamite to blast open the tree trunks trying to find if there are any valuable gemstones to be extracted from within. Then again, I have also read of the huge amount of physical damage that was done to several Egyptian Pharoah tombs by the early archeologists in ways that we would attribute to the works of vandals by modern standards.
    Archeologists of today do not want to repeat the same mistakes of the past. It is not in fear of any booby traps set by Emperor Qin Shih-huang as any wooden weapons would have long deteriorated over 2,000 years nor fear of mercury poisoning as hazmats with oxygen masks can be worn. Rather, it is the fear that the introduction of air from the outside and light would damage whatever artifacts there are inside the tomb. Even the introduction of robots and spy cameras would cause outside air to enter and they want to avoid doing that.
    The size of the artificial mountain that encase the whole of the emperor's tomb is formidable and trying to seal it completely off while yet allowing for archeologists to enter and start excavating work is beyond the Chinese archeologists capability at this time. The technology is not yet available or created to handle a site as immense as this and so, they and the world, has to wait - frustratingly so though it is.

    @kiatlow2412 7 месяцев назад +8

    He did not know that mercury was poisonous so the mercury could not be a deterrent devised by him. Besides the mercury being heavier than soil would have seeped away through the porous soil. Fear of other traps is more likely but unlikely as there are so many ways to inspect the tomb and it's contents without actually digging open the mound. Fibre optics and miniature drones are the go these days inspect dangerous locations.
