Your fan noise comment is so on point. Excited about alder lake / rembrandt hopefully being the beginning of the end for loud fans. I tend to restrict the cpu performance in my laptops so I never go over 43 dB.
Being able to work with a heavy load and yet have no fan noise was one of the biggest reasons for me to upgrade to the M1 Max 16" from a 2019 MBP. The 2019 model had a Intel i9 processor that simply couldn't be cooled efficiently, as soon as you started any workloads or a few tabs on resource heavy websites, the fans would spin up and be loud as hell non stop. Just to be able to work while feeling calm and not needing to wear headphones to overcome it is so nice.
Between that and battery life are the biggest reasons I’m interested in the new silicon. Otherwise, you can get very nice (or even just good enough) Windows-based laptops for much cheaper. If I were into 3D animation, those Windows laptops would be the way to go, but I also have a beefy desktop for that + gaming. For mobile working, the new Macbooks are super interesting. If the 13.3 inch Pro ditched the stupid touchbar for physical keys, I was very interested in it for the crazy battery life.
Yes, glad to see i`m not the only one who noticed that. You`d think a good tech youtuber would know that .. Hell, any portable drive be it USB sticks to USB drives (external HDD/SDD) should have been formatted to ExFat from the get go out of factory (at least all of the ones I've bought in the last few years) and I've been keeping them on exfat as well just to avoid this Windows/Mac OSX issue. (not that i have OSX devices myself)
@@corgikun2579 You're thinking of FAT, which does have a max file size of 4GB. exFAT has a theoretical max file size of 16EB and max volume size of 128PB.
I think Apple with its release of the M1 chips forced Intel and AMD to accelerate their chip roll outs. They were probably sitting on these more advanced chip architectures to slowly unveil them over the next few years, but Apple forced their hands.
The Ryzen chips are already decent, though. What AMD severely needs is good laptops. There are so many more things to consider than just the processor.
Just a heads up, for those working back and forth between pc and macs, formatting the externals for ExFat makes it so you can work with the drive on both machines.
@@Anthonym_323 ExFAT is supported natively by both platforms without needing to rely on some third party drive like you do with the NTFS support on Mac. Macs can only READ NTFS drives out of the box, they can't write to them. Microsoft charge a fair whack to license that functionality. The only time you really need to have an NTFS drive in Windows is if it's where the actual OS is, or it's part of the indexed network volumes (which newer versions of Windows are pretty shit at doing, incidentally. Try searching on a Windows Server network share lol).
@@zajlord2930 You're thinking of FAT32, exFAT has a much, much, much larger file size limit, the same as NTFS I believe. NTFS is just the native file system for WIndows so the benefit there is that it'll support all the things Windows expects it to support, exFAT doesn't.
I've found that MacOS stabilized my workflow as a software developer a bunch. I use to distrohop between Elementary OS, PopOS, Ubuntu etc. on a Dell Precision Workstation laptop - was never really satisfied. Now that laptop runs windows and it's fine for my memory intensive work (it's got 80GB of memory) like running VMS, Docker etc. My gaming PC obviously runs Windows and then my homelab server runs Proxmox with multiple guest OS. A little base model MacBook Air is now my daily driver for 70% of stuff. I don't hate Windows or Linux, I just use them when they are the best tool for the job.
I've generally found WSL2 to be really really good, OSX and Brew annoy me but the Macbook hardware is exceptionally good. If the graphic card prices stay as they are i'll dual wield a Mac and an Xbox.
@@spacechannelfiver I’m surprised to hear that WSL2 works that well, and conversely, that Brew has been annoying for you. Granted, I’m not even up to Power User-level on Linux, just know basic scripting and compiling from source, but I would have thought Brew was pretty straightforward for giving a UNIX environment some ease of use in getting some basic tools. Kinda like pip for python-related tasks. But I’ve also not used Brew, so I can’t really say. I’m just surprised to hear praise for WSL2, as I used MSYS a while back and while it was functional, it never felt like it was anything more than a gimmick/wrapper function like WINE. At the end of the day, I still had Windows foibles to deal with, rather than being on Linux.
Not a Mac user, but definitely looking forward to this series. It won't be just another review. It will give those who really want ro switch over a better idea. The ups and downs.
Maybe my experience can shortcut the wait a little bit. I bought a MBP in 2014, and found it to be pretty awesome. Photo editing, music remuxing, light video editing. More importantly, it became a "lifebook" for me - web browsing, emailing, schoolwork - the 8 hour battery was a real winner. Even more importantly, it kept up with my daily workflow for almost a decade - I moved some of my video editing to my Windows machine (gaming tower) when I rebuilt it with Ryzen. Last summer I bought myself an M1 MBA and an M1 Mini. I'll set everything up on my MBA, transfer the project to my Mini on an external SSD, and let the Mini render it while I do something else. The new M1 is amazing - it sips battery and is a perfect compliment to whatever I'm doing at the time. It's just.... not great for gaming, although Apple Arcade is working on that.
I would highly recommend that you find a reviewer that has a workload similar to yours. Unfortunately, almost every reviewer on RUclips is a 'creative' and their workflows are mainly related editing pictures or movies - tasks that the M1 chips are great at performing. If you have a more traditional workload where you are more concentrating at MS Office type applications, your experience will vary wildly - but most of that is due to MacOS issues vs. Windows. In particular, if you are doing work in MS Excel, the Mac version is pretty bad and then you also have a MacOS issue grouping items under the same task bar icon making it very slow to switch between workbooks - this is why most reviewers have the very large external displays - so you can place things side by side on the monitor for faster C&P. If you don't want to invest a bunch in a large external display, you are better off with Windows if your main workload is MS Office type tasks - and I am saying this as an owner of an M1. If you are used to Windows and like the speed - you will be annoyed by the animations, etc in MacOS that are more tolerable with an M1 chip but still a big cause for frustration.
@@kershekfamily That's why I tried to give an "everyman" experience - I'm a diehard Windows geek and I'm always upgrading my Windows tower/gaming laptop. My macbook is a computer I live on - web browsing, streaming video, and yes creative work. But I stilll use "office" type applications - the baked-in Pages, Keynote, and I forget their excel replacement because I don't use it, they're more intuitive and robust. They also come included with MacOS and don't require a separate service or purchase. They also export to their microsoft counterparts, and can edit/create PDF. AND I can open them on my ipad or iphone to make last minute edits if need be. It used to be that Mac was only for the creative types, and Windows was for everyone else. But Mac just does everything now, and Windows has.... pc games. Office. Antivirus. And updates when you're trying to work...
@@isturma "But I still use "office" type applications - the baked-in Pages, Keynote, and I forget their excel replacement because I don't use it, they're more intuitive and robust." - actually, no, they are not. Keynote is great for a 'green screen' add in, but it is no where near a replacement for Powerpoint. Even within MacOS - Powerpoint is materially slower and worse than the equivalent in Windows. Again, this is a MacOS and MSFT issue in that they decided deliver a sub-optimal product. Nothing against the M1 chip - that truly is amazing. But, non-Intel Macs have huge drawbacks. For example, if you are a business students, chances are you will need to do an MS Access project - well, there is no Access for MacOS at all. I use my Mac for everyday tasks as well - surfing the web, watching movies, etc. However, it is also my main laptop for work. In that, the majority applications I use are MS Office. I have yet to render a movie. However, I have to work on Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook about 6+ hours per day. I think this is fairly typical for office jobs. Second, I typically have Teams open all day, Workplace Chat, and an open communicator program like Zalo or Viber. So, for me, the battery life claims mean little unless it replicates this type of load. Now, I will say that my M1 can usually make it through the day with 10-15% remaining. Hence, I have not been able to ditch carrying a charger - but, I know I can go 5 hours in a meeting without needing the charger which is nice to have. My only real complaint is how bad the MS Office office is. I have looked at Parallels but spending an extra $80 PER YEAR seems outrageous to me. I did buy the expanded storage to 512GB with the anticipation I will need to run Windows on the same machine. I just want a better option than Parallels at that cost. Again, your mileage may vary as everyone has a different workload. Just from my perspective, any review that concentrates on movie rendering or picture editing probably does not align with a vast majority of the people actually viewing the videos.
Great feedback video. I made the jump to my first Mac with the 14 inch Pro. I may still build a gaming PC once video cards are in better supply, but for now this is fast, quiet, and runs all the apps I need to use just fine.
2022 is a great year for laptops. Apple Silicon is awesome (I have the 16” MBP as well & everything you’ve mentioned is spot on) but the Windows laptop launches at CES we’re eye popping. So many great laptops out there right now - MB Air, Dell Inspiron 16, Slim 7 Pro, MSi Z16, plus dual screen and function wheel options etc.
I have pretty much the same config for work (software development). It's insane. I had a Macbook Air M1 before, already a pretty capable machine. It destroyed my old 15" MacBook Mid 2017. The new MacBook Pro is way more powerful. I can throw almost anything at it und will do it fast, quiet and smooth.
For my coding workflow the Air m1 pretty much matched the 2019 i9 mbp i had earlier (actually it felt smoother if anything) while being completely silent. If anything the only thing i miss is having windows for some light gaming.
@@andy-sl2im I'm not committed to any language or framework or anything, but I've been messing with C# a lot recently. idk about Visual Studio for Mac.
I stopped using Apple computers from the moment they didn’t care for the Pro. Been using Windows for a while. However now with the MBP and M1 chip, I’m back with Apple and OMG, the performances are ridiculous (meaning amazing) and while being super quiet. I’m using my new MBP as a desktop with external monitor, etc.
I think it’s almost funny how they alienated most of their audience with removing ports and other features and only had worse and worse solutions as Intel cranked the heat up for performance. And now we’re heading back to the glory years when Apple used different silicon, had a beautiful laptop design with MagSafe and a bunch of ports. I still have my Aluminum Powerbook G4 (granted, I bought it well after it was unsupported, but what a cool computer!), and I’m tempted to buy a 16 inch MBP because of how well Apple Silicon will work for what I’m looking for. Great battery life, extremely responsive for web/media consumption and quick enough for code compilation to not feel like I’m missing too much from my normal gaming desktop. And then for games or anything 3D, I have an overkill desktop.
I was not a Mac user - But when I started with Mac, the ecosystem is an understatement. The fact all of Apple device communicate with each other is a huge factor. When I start work I do not need to touch my phone. All the message calls and everything comes to my laptop and the continuity is amazing ( You can continue any work from any drive). Small things makes a huge difference.
Sure. I used Mac and iphone before (not anymore), and I understand your point. It is so seamless and amazing. But just to let u know, when u start researching about apps and automations on Android and windows, u realize there are amazing features and apps like syncing clipboard with all other computers in any OS platform, syncing notifications, opening android apps, take calls or messages. Some of them are even more useful than Apple ecosystem, and I can't live without them anymore.
@@ytn6662 Agree mate - I am not saying its only Mac that can do that. But for a regular user they need to do lot of research and understand how all of that works. I use Windows at home. But for me to get my PC to do the same its not easy and takes lots of work- Even then its not seamless as a Mac. Obviously Widows is a better platform for many reason. But Windows can not hide behind that and not expect users to stay. Because Mac have been catching up in price and performance for the last few years. I can see firms like ours have started to buy Mac's. That is a huge win for Apple.
I love how the switch conveys the emotional weight that nobody talks about. I watch a lot of tech reviews, but I guess because reviewers are switching their tech almost every day, they don't get attached to their tech gear the way we do. Emotions are important, and that's what separates a good tech channel from the other soulless spec-reading dudes out there.
Great laptop but for most people it won’t be needed. Most RUclipsrs review this with their workflow in mind and the screen panel is even calibrated for video editing in mind. When I say most people I’m referring to people who will just be using the laptop for web surfing, office documents and watching RUclips.
Agreed. It’s complete overkill. I have the MacBook Air M1 and for light graphic design, managing my blog, Spotify, creating podcast, and checking email, it’s amazing.
I was a windows user for 10 years of headache, migrated to Mac ecosystem 12 years ago and it's been a breezy productive 12 years and going strong. There is always a reason why Apple macOS simply works well and people swear by it. I don't like to waste time building and upgrading my machine, I rather spend time working and being productive. Yes, Windows is great for developers, Programmers, Tech Content Creators, and PC Geeks who make a living reviewing computer products, but in real-world productivity, I think apple figured it out.
The 14" base M1 model is also the next level in performance and quality. It is simply amazing! The only complaint is all of my HDMI cables that I tried, are loose, even the one that came with my LG 4K monitor. Nice review!
I just wish the battery life was better, but that’s the trade-off I feel like. It’s great amount of performance with a smaller battery compared to the 16-inch or more performance than the Air/13.3-inch models.
I’m glad that I got the M1 pro I don’t think I’ll ever edit back in windows The smoothness and the playback is another level I don’t think windows laptops will be as good as this generation of Macs
08:58 Speakers. I've been using Apple laptops since I got a PowerBook G4 12' back in college, first running Linux (Yellowdog!) until MacOS X convinced me to switch. I've got a full eco system of Windows systems for gaming/productivity, Linux for services (File Server, local DNS, etc), but Apple has always had my laptop slot, despite issues I've had with the 'walled garden' and (no)Right to Repair problems Apple drags with it, and the big points is comes down to has always been Display, Trackpad, and Speakers. I'm so used to having quality speakers on my laptops, I've NEVER been able to keep a Windows laptop. Everything else can be great, but that tinny flat garbage that passes as 'quality' speakers in the Windows laptop market has always driven me crazy. Thanks for the review -- I've really wanted to switch to a Windows laptop due to issues I have with Apple and its practices, but the hardware has always failed me. Just had my old 2014 finally die on me and I've been having some internal conflict about my M1 Pro order.
I also use the now "old" Macbook Pro with the first M1 and even that is ridiculous good when it comes to performance, battery life is amazing. Yeah you have just the 2 USB-C Ports but on a full blown Desk Setup you use USB Hub anyway, there is no way the integrated ports are ever enough so i don't mind. I also don't mind the official support for just one display, cause similar to you i can also use my ipad pro as an addition screen, also in parallel to a HDMI display so i have a 3 screen setup with the integrated display as well. I use it for surfing, cloud gaming, home automation, programming, mailing, social media stuff... it is simply awesome. When it's time to go to bed and i want entertainment and multitasking in bed i still have a mobile dual screen setup with the ipad as a second screen. So also no issue in that department.
Just an FYI if you switch back to windows, the command+shift+5 equivelant is win+shift+s by default it is a rectangular drag to select area and its copied to your clipboard, but there is a menu at the top of the screen to change this to 'free form'(any shape) 'window snip'(i believe the active window or a window that you select) and 'full screen'. There is a similar option for screen recorting win+alt+r but for some silly reason it only works with "games" or programs you flag as games, so not the desktop. there's probably a registry key for this but i dont care to find it because i generally just use OBS to do this (not strreamlabs)
I recently switched from having a Mac mini with twin external displays to the 14in with a 15.6" 4k USB-C display. I have less ports, but I need less. The 1080p Webcam is as clear as my Logitech brio, the built-in mic array is seriously impressive and my whole setup fits in my backpack with room to spare. Also there's the whole using my iPad as a third screen and Hotspot thing. This is the computer I've been hoping someone would make for years.
I really miss pc gaming. I moved to Mac's 3 year ago, and I've been looking for any excuse to move back to windows. Unless I get a Laptop that just "screams" gaming, then there isn't anything that works for me. Someone at the office brought a SL4, and boy that was close to pulling me until I researched its performance compared to M1. If I'm moving back to Windows, it has to be a laptop that performs better by at-least 30%. If only you could game on a Mac natively without the need of Parallels, Bootcamp or CrossOver.
Iv had the 14 with m1 pro for about a month and its the most impressive piece of tech iv ever owned, battery life in amazing, charges fast with the 96w MagSafe cable, I always have like 15 tabs open and its never even came close to stuttering, screens ridiculous. love it, highly recommend
Bought a Macbook Air M1 last year because of its power, having never used MacOS before, and I haven't regretted it at all. It's blazing fast (no slowdowns yet whatsoever), super smooth and MacOS has been really nice to use although there was a bit of a learning curve. Still have a Windows PC at home but the MacBook Air is a perfect portable computer. Crazy that I can play some heavier games like Dying Light on it too at 60FPS, it's an ultrabook with no cooling and the game runs flawlessly.
Those M1 chipsets are on completely another level. If you are new to MacOS consider turning “3 finger move” option in accessibility touchpad settings. You won’t have to click on anything (windows, files, folders) you just hover over the top bar of the window or icon and you’ll be able to move it with 3fingers :)
You have produced an excellent, informative, and well-edited video here. I found it extremely useful. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. Kudos!

@Matthew Moniz simple resume it perfectly! No fan noise is a deal breaker nowadays. Windows laptops are so hard to find a model and a variant to be quiet that it is easier just pick a macbook air or pro which is everywhere. Quietness is simple amazing.
The HDMI port IS 2.1, thanks to the retroactive naming scheme they recently announced to keep things sim... stupid. To keep them stupid. Like USB 3.0 devices from 10 years ago are now rocking the brand new USB 3.2 Gen 1 x 1...
Good job I switched my workstation 3900x and such, to a MBA M1 and I could not be more happy. There are some things that a MBA falls short on, but the overall exp was great.
Although I'm not a Mac user. The way Apple rises the bar is good, that Windows laptop now has a reference to follow. Good battery life, runs cool and quiet, good webcam, speakers and great performance overall. I hope there will be Windows laptop performs as good as MacBoook Pro M1 in the near future.
The only problem is that the key to Macs battery life are two things that Windows will never have. Apple Silicon, and seamless integration between hardware and software.
While the Macbook Pro seems great for photo editing and video editing, I do 3D animation and 3D modeling as well as some gaming once in a while. I wish the Macbook Pro can catch up to gaming performances as well as programs like Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine 4, etc.
@Abdulmalik Honestly, wait for more compatibility issues to pan out, because you’ll have performance issues or bugs for non-native apps especially for 3D related work. Unfortunately, I think Windows is still the way to go for safety of making sure everything will work. If you were just doing software development, I can’t imagine that you would have too many issues, but I’m not sure if there’s any CAD software that would work as well on Mac, especially ARM-based Macs.
Blender runs amazing on the m1 pro. viewport performance is very nice especially with 120hz. plus there is very nice trackpad support for blender that windows devices don't have quite yet check out blender patch D7660 Add support for precision touchpad gestures on Windows. For blender i say this laptop is awesome especially with apple on the devfund support for metal GPU.
Excellent opinion piece. I’ve only come across one other video that I’d rate higher as it pertains to providing me with good information towards deciding on the 16 versus the 14. Thank you.
I was gonna switch to PC two years ago because everybody was going PC, my Mac Mini 2012 was my main until last december that I got the MB Pro 14. That Mac Mini lasted as my main for 10 years, and it wasn't even one of the highest equipped options. Glad I didn't went PC, also all my paid software is on macOS and most of them have no Windows alternative
Check software from Paragon… i use it on my Mac so I don’t have to reformat my Windows external drives to the Mac file system…. I’ve used it since 2009 and have had ZERO issues in all these years!!!
For photos, videos and browsing it's fine. For light script-based software development too. Like all the other macbook pros before the M1. In my company we all use Macbook pros. I've had several versions of Macbook Pros since 2018 and now I have a M1. For my work I need to run 2 databases, 1 IDE, 1 VM, 1 tomcat server, git, build tools, all browser versions, your regular office tools, email and chat, and a host of utility apps, most of which run concurrently, and performance wise... it's slow... it's slow as hell... it's excruciatingly sloooow, and macOS freezes frequently. Yet I consider myself lucky since I have a 64Gb version while some of my coworkers only have a 32Gb version. Not to mention the noise! The fan blows at full tilt all the time (our IT dept cleans them regularly though). In 2020 our projects were smaller in scope and my Macbook was able to cope with them. It wasn't fast but it was bearable. Today is a different story though. So, I recently bought a high end gaming laptop (about the _same price_ as my macbook) I was going to use it for games but I changed my mind. I installed all my tools on it except all the corporate stuff. My Macbook now serves as a file server, git client and for all the ordinary corp stuff. I mapped my Mac's git folder on my PC (to respect corp policy no IP files copied to non-corp hardware). Despite going over a LAN to read-write files, everything I need to do is orders of magnitude faster (build times reduced by half). I'm not saying it's blazing fast, I'm not saying I'm blown away, I'm saying it's fast enough that I don't need to wallow in despair like before. I can finally work at my normal pace again. I'm not even thinking about the performance issue anymore while I work, and the noise is gone, so for me it's a win (if you ignore the fact that I bought a separate laptop for this with my own money). Of course it's not an apples to apples comparison (no pun intended) in terms of specs, my PC laptop has slightly better specs than my Macbook Pro M1, but that's not the point. The point is the _price._ For a given price, will the machine you choose give you the performance needed for the type of job you're doing? For my specific use case as a full stack software developer, the Macbook Pro doesn't cut it. For the same price I bought a much better machine in terms of "getting work done". YMMV (I anticipate all the fan boys and girls of both worlds will, again, fight over this. You are free to do so. However, as a user of both macOS and Windows I appreciate the qualities of both and have no interest in participating in any of those fruitless mac vs windows "debates". I'll only respond to honest questions and I'll ignore any provocations.)
I felt it. Got a mac from by boss for a week. I convinced him to let be stay on PC (linux). And every summer i hear him say "casnt work, ... its too hot (in the room)". _They are SO expensive and you can use it as web browser ... like a "netbook". Not my world. I want to work, not think about the tool i use._
Those M1 Macs are really great for video and photo editing. The hardware acceleration for video encoding and decoding and for video streaming is really good and efficient. That's all. Also, for web browsing and light use, since the battery is really absurd, but this isn't a "pro" use.
@Garrus Vakarian I just realized (stupid YT chat view) ... m1 does not keep up. OP listed his tools. As a dev my self i could bring a similar list. So nothing for a dev. Except you do some frontend ... na .. not even this i guess. Pretty expensive browser if you ask me :/
@@CottonInDerTube We have FE devs and designers who are quite happy with their M1, but they only use some light weight code editor and only test their stuff against a remote server instance. They don't run anything locally.
Hey Eber! if you format your hard drives as ExFat, they'll be readable by macOS and windows. useful if you decide to reintegrate your PC - or any windows machines - into your life.
I switched in 2021 to mac m1 the performance was shocking to me battery life is unbelievable the only problem i have is with devices compatibility especially printers until now even with wifi printers I still face countless problems
I got the MBP 16 M1 Pro and it's fast. I used a MBP 13 2018 i5 and it just blows it out of the water. One thing I do notice is that speed wise it''s as fast as my desktop PC with 5600X and 980ti. You don't really notice how fast it is in daily use. I do however, will use it for software dev and video editing so I'll see how it performs then.
I am guessing you started using the ipad as a second screen just to see if it actually worked but if you're going to use it all the time why not just use the actual laptop as the second screen instead?
Because the iPad fits in a smaller space that doesn’t need to expand and take more desk space. If you already have one, it can be more space efficient to do what he’s doing.
Still rocking macbook air M1 since launch and couldn't be happier. For everyone looking for M1 and don't care about 6k video editing, just buy m1 air. Best value. Even for coding.
4,400$ CAD goshhhhh. Seems like an awesome machine however, I was interested at first, but when I saw the price, I feel I don't really need it that much. I like that you invest in your tool to be more efficient and you are willing to take risk changing os and all. What is weird is, I also make a living working on a PC (office job), but it's a damn old Lenovo t470s that cost less than 500$. I ask for an upgrade as I would like to be more efficient and less bug and wait time (since my time is costly) and they refused (I also can't buy my one for security reason), it's crazy !
Do you still use your macbook pro after 1 year? It would be interesting to hear your user experience past 1 year, as for shorter time you can avoid gaming, but within 1 year either you need it or find different approach) Great video as usually)
For anything but the most intense video editing tasks the fans will never turn on. It's not just quiet but 100% noiseless since there are no moving parts. You can use an app like istat menu to confirm that the fans sit at zero RPM. For the Intel MBP the fans have a floor at around 2000 RPM and never go to zero.
I’ve had the same exact Macbook Pro for about a month now (waited for it two months to arrive). I’ve never, ever, heard the fan yet, powered or on battery. It’s just unbelievable. My former MBP (2020 i7) was running like an airplane when starting or installing the stuff I use to code ..
p.s. You should dock in the other direction (screen hinge up) because you're blocking the vent right now. Of course, the fact that you can work just fine while blocking much of the vent is something else.
Haha! Fellow PCMR gamer with a Mac for work (& previously school). My Macbook pro has been my workhorse for years, perfect for Lightroom photo editing, word processing and browser based work. M1 is a game changer and makes it more compelling than ever. I'd say there are some compromises, but well worth it if you don't need to game on the go. My switch and future Steam deck will fill that void for me.
Good video Ebert. Thank you for sharing your candid experiences. I like Mac OS but I do appreciate Windows as well. They both have their functionality.

You should consider formatting all external drives to exFAT. That format can be read and written to natively in every modern OS.
I noticed that too!
Like noooooo, you are creating the exact same problem when exFAT is literally on the same page 😭😭😭
Make sure that file size isn't an issue. I remember files over 4 GB weren't allowed in FAT or exFAT

exFAT has a theoretical max file size of 16EB and max volume size of 128PB.
@@popcorny007 How would you theoretically format them drives when you have i.e. hundreds of PBs of files? They still need to go somewhere first :(
I think Apple with its release of the M1 chips forced Intel and AMD to accelerate their chip roll outs. They were probably sitting on these more advanced chip architectures to slowly unveil them over the next few years, but Apple forced their hands.
Thank god too. I hate it when companies get too comfy.
The Ryzen chips are already decent, though. What AMD severely needs is good laptops. There are so many more things to consider than just the processor.
Ikr haha
Just a heads up, for those working back and forth between pc and macs, formatting the externals for ExFat makes it so you can work with the drive on both machines.
Just use Mac NTFS done, no need to format any drive. You can read and write Mac Drives, fat32,Exfat, ntfs
@@TalesOfWar are there any disadvantages or differences to ntfs?
@@oudomsambatchorn851 i think there is file size limit 4gb but that should be all
@@zajlord2930 You're thinking of FAT32, exFAT has a much, much, much larger file size limit, the same as NTFS I believe.
The ups and downs.
agreed
@@isturma "But I still use "office" type applications - the baked-in Pages, Keynote, and I forget their excel replacement because I don't use it, they're more intuitive and robust."
- actually, no, they are not.
This guy makes some of the best videos on RUclips!
Great feedback video. I made the jump to my first Mac with the 14 inch Pro. I may still build a gaming PC once video cards are in better supply, but for now this is fast, quiet, and runs all the apps I need to use just fine.
For my Windows drives I use Paragon NTFS for Mac, it can read and write on NTFS drives. Awesome little software.
I used that for a time but found it a bit unreliable- that was some years ago though. Has the reliability improved?
@@Tigrisshark I have absolutely no issue, right now on my Mac M1, it’s reliable so far
Loved the commitment on this 60 day vid. Kudos for the moniz cameo
I appreciate the "Cmd+Shft+5" shortcut! Very helpful instead of typing in "screenshot" in the search bar lol; great video too!
What sort of software development do you do? I'm hesitant to try the M1 chips due to compatibility concerns.
For my coding workflow the Air m1 pretty much matched the 2019 i9 mbp i had earlier (actually it felt smoother if anything) while being completely silent. If anything the only thing i miss is having windows for some light gaming.
@@terribletruth8201 Yeah heard lots of issue for swes. Probably not worth the headaches.
@@andy-sl2im I'm not committed to any language or framework or anything, but I've been messing with C# a lot recently. idk about Visual Studio for Mac.
This was such a well-made video. I'm actually astonished.
Look at Matt, so inspirational
First time watching your videos. I am hooked. Top quality everything
Amazing video. For me Macs are ideal for work and PCs for gaming… this as been a thing for some time now.
@@anthonyt425 Yeah, M1 is more than enough for basic users. This is only for a professional workflow like editing, graphic design, etc.
Windows is completely different now, you just have to buy the right laptop
The 14" base M1 model is also the next level in performance and quality. It is simply amazing! The only complaint is all of my HDMI cables that I tried, are loose, even the one that came with my LG 4K monitor. Nice review!
I just wish the battery life was better, but that’s the trade-off I feel like. It’s great amount of performance with a smaller battery compared to the 16-inch or more performance than the Air/13.3-inch models.
Wow, this is the first time I’m actually seeing Matthew’s studio from a behind the scenes type angle. Noice!!!
that setup process was so cleannnnnnnn
Wonderful video. Loved watching till the end.
I’m glad that I got the M1 pro
I don’t think I’ll ever edit back in windows
The smoothness and the playback is another level
I don’t think windows laptops will be as good as this generation of Macs
Loved this from start to finish, one of your most enjoyable and helpful videos, love it,stay safe and healthy man
08:58 Speakers.
Great review. That little trip to Mat was so refreshing and fun in the see of tech videos.

Geek Lebron with another solid video.
To write files on NTFS disks using Mac os, you just need a program called "Paragon NTFS", or its analog, there are few same programs
You won’t have to click on anything (windows, files, folders) you just hover over the top bar of the window or icon and you’ll be able to move it with 3fingers :)
his voice is so soothing
Also when you have the camera facing to the guest, your audio is still fantastic

Good job
I switched my workstation 3900x and such, to a MBA M1 and I could not be more happy.
Great video as always! 💯💯
I'm curious about what monitor you're using with the mac i like to have an extra sd card in my monitor.
Excellent opinion piece. I’ve only come across one other video that I’d rate higher as it pertains to providing me with good information towards deciding on the 16 versus the 14. Thank you.
I was gonna switch to PC two years ago because everybody was going PC,
my Mac Mini 2012 was my main until last december that I got the MB Pro 14.
The point is the _price._
For a given price, will the machine you choose give you the performance needed for the type of job you're doing?
For my specific use case as a full stack software developer, the Macbook Pro doesn't cut it. For the same price I bought a much better machine in terms of "getting work done".
YMMV
(I anticipate all the fan boys and girls of both worlds will, again, fight over this.
@Garrus Vakarian Well, did it change? I doubt that.
@Garrus Vakarian I just realized (stupid YT chat view) ... m1 does not keep up.

How does it go with software dev?
So we’re still not gonna see the Macs go through your standardized battery test?
I have 2 computers. Ryzen 5000 5600x, 3070RTX in Phanteks P500A for gaming and Mac M1 Mini for producticity.
Finally, Eber! ;)
I still hate the Notch and never will get use to it even though I am far away from the Apple space!

Outdoor editing unlocked
I’ve had the same exact Macbook Pro for about a month now (waited for it two months to arrive).
I’ve never, ever, heard the fan yet, powered or on battery.
