Well, the problem is that 2D artists don't need that amount of power, and as for 3D, currently most of the software is not optimised. Like, if I'm not mistaken Blender, for example, still can't use natively GPU cores. And while not everyone uses blender, probably it's really common problem there
Edit: ok, it supports it now.

Well at least for deep learning its not as good as something with an RTX 3070 or RTX 3080. Just does not support features like special data formats as NVidia is using.
For 3D: Honestly the software is the limitation. Autodesk Inventor does not have a MacOS version. Neither does CATIA or SolidWorks. So the big 3 are not running under MAC. What do you want to test there? There is no professional software available for MacOS. The closest things is Fusion 360 but honestly that just does not compare to Inventor or SolidWorks.
For artists the only professional option I know is Maya. That you might be able to test.

The audio latency part is highly dependent on what audio interface you're using.
With RME audio interfaces you can achieve 64 samples (5ms round trip) without pops or stutters on a mid to high tier PC or Mac. Even with low end Focusrite interfaces you can achieve sub 10ms round trip with good performance using their AISO driver.

It can be but he had a ton of vst's and vsti's loaded, he was maxing DSP which in a purely CPU environment means CPU resources, this wasn't a matter of the interface not keeping up. Many will work, but with class-compliant drivers (that could mean less routings/less i-o/less samplerates & bit depths available).
It may not be a problem for many, but for who has relatively old hardware (audio interfaces don’t get obsolete as quickly as many other devices) could mean also a gear update.

So glad you guys came out with this video. I work on broadway musicals and a lot within the industry have been umming and ahing about the new MacBook pros. We heavily rely on particular software, like Reason, that's specifically built for theatre operations, hence, is far more niche and therefore can't get the instant software fixes for the M1 architecture. Was very interesting seeing how massive of a problem that software barrier can be with complex and niche apps, I mean 4000 samples is ridiculous, and frankly unusable in many cases.

I switched from a Ryzen 7 2700x to an M1 air. It wasn't a planned upgrade, LTT got me curious because they were shockingly positive about something Apple made.
Once I got around the software issues (you really need to be ready to change the software you work with) I started loving the thing and noticed I was actually more productive.
Productive enough to buy an M1 mini as well. They are the 'good old' M1 with 16gb so not exactly the powerhouses we get in 2022, but it's insane how easily they outperform my Ryzen 2700x with 32gb of ram and a 1660 for audio, video and photo editing. And in my case it's all still going through Rosetta because I just cannot final cut :D.

As an all-round creative, I’ve switched from a Mac Pro 2019 to a MacBook Pro M1 Max. Honestly, it’s been a great change so far. Premiere / After Effects projects that struggled with the Mac Pro are buttery smooth now, and overall I don’t miss the Intel + ATI combination at all. I can do more, faster and now fully portable.

I use MOTU audio interfaces for music recording, and they're usually one macOS version behind with their drivers (as are many DAW manufacturers). Sure, the existing drivers *usually* work with the latest macOS, but isn't worth attempting an OS upgrade right away just in case it has to be downgraded again.
That's not even addressing the Apple Silicon architecture change. It took until late 2021 before most of MOTU's line-up was supported on M1. And it's looking like legacy hardware will never be supported on it.
For digital audio, low latency operation is paramount and developing new drivers always has the manufacturers playing catch-up whenever there's a major OS or architecture change.

Worth noting with the DAW example is that, if you're mostly happy with the sounds you have, you can render that track in place (in most DAWs) and then you can turn off the plugins you were using, thus saving CPU resources. Cubase, Reaper, Pro Tools, Ableton, and Apple's own Logic all have a feature like this, and for DAWs that don't (Like older versions of Harrison Mixbus), you can mute everything except the track you're happy with and render that in a lossless format, then reimport it on a new track and disable plugins on the original.
ALSO Worth noting is that some interfaces have their own DSP chips built in that can handle effects rendering, acting as a coprocessor (UAD Apollo comes to mind)
The way Andrew's been working in this video is so inefficient that it feels intentional

If you’re getting 70% of the performance of a huge, power hungry desktop in a package you can throw in a backpack and take with you, and operate at full speed on BATTERY power for 5-8 hours with no need to be near an outlet.. that could be game changing for people who work from home or travel.

I’ve been working on music specially for more than 7 years, and I’ve used several versions of the macbook pro. With the M1 Max, I’m able to use even 32/64 samples for recording with no hiccups, pushing it to 512/1024 in big projects (2048 as a desperate measure for really, really demanding ones). Inside that margin, it works. With the M1 (base), some projects were barely playable, and on the 2016 macbook pro it just wasn’t feasible. All this using Ableton, Pro Tools or Logic through Rosetta. Reason just turns out to be a really bad choice for a video like this (there are many other professional tools to check before that one). Or moving files to an SD so I can configure a pi VPN server deployment? What about 2 Windows VMs each with multiple cores and four displays so I can monitor all of the servers in a cluster? Just cause you and RUclipsrs can't think of anything but Da Vinci resolve and blender, doesn't mean it doesn't have a use case in a professional environment

By watching just a few videos of MA I can't even tell that is a part of LMG; the clean white background, the narration, the B roll, the cuts everything just gives it a completely different aesthetic.

Lucky enough to be just getting into upper-level college courses and not having any major software incompatibility issues, but going from my 2015 base model MacBook air to this MacBook pro 14" has been incredible, at least for what I'm used to working on.

It’s ironic because Samsung is just as big a tyrant (if not bigger) in South Korea as Apple is in the US. Really any company is the same wherever capitalism reigns. I think you’re just hating a company for the sake of hating them. Pointing out “fan-boys” as a reason is kind of… infantile?

I’ve made the switch from Windows to Apple a couple of months ago when I bought my first MacBook Pro M1. I am a kind of productivity user that works 90% of the time on Microsoft office suite and the MacBook Pro has been just delivering what I expected: Speed and power with an incredible battery that for my usage last also two full days.
My keys Microsoft teams is the Achilles heel of my set up because the app doesn’t support the M1 chip periods but the trick is to use the web based app which runs through Microsoft edge natively on M1.
You have to trade off some of the functions of Microsoft teams but now the overall experience was much better Judy 100% compatibility and optimisation between performance and battery periods

What a cool video. As a music producer, I hate it when my 2016 Mac slows down and I either can't work on my project anymore or I have to jump through hoops to get by. I finally just pulled the trigger on the MBP 14". Now I just have to wait 2 months to get it.

I bought a Mac mini M1 as a private working from home machine without any real expectations. So far it does all I want with a huge ultrawide 49" screen connected to it.
To work from home I basically do what my users do, use the Citrix Workspace app to connect to our environment.
Everything just works fine but what surprises/annoys me is that even a big company like Citrix doesn't put in the effort to develop a native M1 client. Would it be better? It could be, it's hard to say without being able to test it. My autistic brain really has a hard time understanding why a company that wants to enable people to work anywhere from any device always is so slow to adapt new technology.

If you wanted to do a follow up video, I’m based in Canada, and I do live visuals for big EDM festival shows. Most of my industry has completely abandoned MacOS due to thermal limitations of running multiple layers of 4K video in real time live in a show. Reliability just hasn’t been there for MacBooks in last several years. In a live show environment where you’re running visuals on massive 100’ LED walls you need to have total reliability, no stuttering, multiple screen outputs at once. It really pushes your GPU. I dropped $5k on a maxed out 16” 2019 MacBook Pro, but have been considering trading it in for a M1 Max MacBook Pro, or even Mac Studio.

Man, you guys are the best and I super appreciate this channel.
I do have to say though, the vast majority of audio producers don't use Reason. They use Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, or Fl Studio - all of which have been optimized for M1. My 2022 Macbook Pro with the M1 Pro absolutely shreds in Logic Pro.
Not to delegitimize this guy's experience. But it's not really representative of most audio professionals.

I am a Systems Administrator, and my specific trade is managing Macs with JAMF and iOS devices with Intune. I purchased a MBP14 personally, and wound up taking it back. I am not lacking knowledge in Apple Silicons limitations, but so much of what I do personally requires OS virtualization which is a hard stopping point on Apple silicon. Beyond the hardware limitations of virtualization, there are still massive software gaps and many developers are just walking. I could not justify paying nearly 3 grand on a device that was so limited for my use case.

I'm a journalist and author and I also do a ton of graphic design, podcast production, and some light video editing, My 14" MacBook Pro with M1 Pro (16 GB RAM) flies through all these tasks without any issues whatsoever.
I used to do it all on a big PC with a 10th Gen i7, 16 GB RAM, and GeForce 1060 Ti GPU, but it would often hang up on video edits and particularly with Photoshop for some reason. I blame that sub-par GPU (the PC is getting old). Still, my Mac is quickly becoming my go-to computer, and I can take it with me everywhere. I'm even beginning to appreciate Mac OS, although I'll always have a soft spot for Windows.
Just two cents from some random dude on the internet!
