@@jsimenstad The individual end user (student, teacher, employee, etc.) doesn't pay for it - your organization does. It's free for the end user. Lol really it’s hella annoying and confusing compared to android, ICloud is a pain the ass, don’t know about making user friendly, but they beg you to subscribe indirectly to iCloud with making it difficult to stop these notifications.
There was a point where I was obsessed with keeping my storage within the 5gb allotment. Now I've just caved and paid the $1 a month because it's more or less insignificant and I get to avoid most of the headaches anyway.
Seriously, it’s very little money and well worth not losing all your photos. All the other options still cost you money or have you spending a bunch of time setting it up or maintaining it.
On Mac create multiple libraries by open the “Photos” app while holding the Option key. You can have one library sync with iCloud while the other library not. Just remember to import your photos to your new library before deleting them from the iCloud Library.
I suspect Apple haven’t tried to make this easy so they can get that $1 a month from everyone not tech-savvy enough to find Image Capture and copy the files over (which I suspect is a lot of people). They still haven’t fixed the bug where data gets randomly corrupted when trying to back up an iPhone using Windows. While I love my phone, watch and MacBook all talking to each other, I’m ready to jump ship and go back to Android if they make it any worse!
As someone who worked for many years at the IT Helpdesk of a large company that uses iPhones, so much of this hit me hard. From the users that have "used Apple my whole life" that know very little about Apple products, to the vague wording of the items in Settings. I've often said that troubleshooting Apple products can be more of an art than a science. Although I use iPhones and Macs all day at work, it is stuff like this video and keeps me using Android and PC in my personal life.
I pay the 200GB mostly to keep backups of my iPhone and my iPad, and the overall usefulness of having a large cloud drive for other stuff. I still have physical drives to backup my mac but honestly, I’d rather just keep everything on iCloud but $9.99/month is way too much at that point.
iCloud is so confusing to mere mortals. Several people I know with iPhones just pay Apple 99c a month for storage to stop the popups because they can't figure out any other way, which is really nothing short of a shakedown. This video goes a long way in demystifying it for people. Thank you.
yeah family sharing is at least a great option because 2TB is a wild amoung of storage for one person but shared among 3-4 the price is right and the storage is excellent.
Great video. I am still able to use Photo Stream on my IPad mini and iPhone 8 but no longer on my desktop since upgrading to a M1 MAC mini. I have to manually transfer photos from those devices to the MAC. I use iCloud backup where required (as you suggest) and backup photos, and my MAC mini to dual 6 TB HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration (mirroring). I then backup everything (once a week) to iDrive. A much less expensive alternative to iCloud!
I just buy the 2TB and share it with my family... It may be shit to pay so much for it, but it's so relaxed to not think about things like making a backup. However - I really hope that Apple is going to upgrade the storage in every price category soon.
$9.99 for your whole family, less than 33 cents a day for several people not worrying ever about losing their files, plus you have a ton of space to store photos and videos? I don't think you got a bad deal here. People spend $8/day on their Starbucks and delete photos and videos they took with their friends to not pay $0.99/month for 50 GB. That one is the shit deal.
@@desmond-hawkins Haha, well, I also dont drink coffee in general xD But the storage options are still too low in my opinion. We currently only use 234GB (3 persons), but because of those 23GB I had to get the bigger plan :D Whatever - since they make good money with it, they will try to keep it that way. Good thing I am investing in Apple stocks also xD
I just saw this video and I thought it was wonderful. I am at exactly the situation that Sarah is at with back ups to iCloud. You’ve given me some options to think about.
What I always tell friends/family who complain about having to pay for more iCloud storage when the 5GB gets full: "It's $1 or $3 a month (50/200GB) to make the problem go away and not have to keep worrying about it." No one likes paying subscription fees, but welcome to the modern era. You're not going to care about the $3/mo you saved when your phone breaks and years of irreplaceable family photos are gone. Pay your cup of coffee per month and be done with it.
You really should have mentioned the newish feature that lets you sort items in your messages by how much storage they are taking up. Before this I had to turn off backup of my messages because it was bigger then 5gb, but after this feature I was able to delete and/or save off a ton of videos from my iMessage which easily brought the size under 5gb.
Wow this was SOOOO HELPFUL OMG Thank You. I was dealing with this every 4-5 days and now I know what was taking up so much space in the backups thanks to what was explained at 9:57 .
When I saw how cheap it was for 50GB then you might as well consider that part of paying monthly for the phone plan. Probably still worth backing everything up every now and then to a external drive or computer to keep several copies just in case.
I really wish Apple offered to select your own cloud server for iCloud stuff. Cloud backups and automatic photo upload are super convenient but having to trust Apple to keep my data private is not something I'm comfortable with personally.
I ended up getting the apple One family plan. I share it out with my friends and family and just tell them to make sure not to share out pictures with anyone on accident. Then as far as the 2TB of storage goes, everyone benefits from that, I may also offload a chunk of data to that too, and everyone also gets the apps out of it that they want too which saves everyone a couple bucks.
I like tutorials like this one to help people save a buck (literally). With that said, I'm still purchasing a family plan for my family as my parents and sibling are not as tech-savvy. A 200GB plan saves me headache and time and I consider that as money well spent.
Little late, but I had to pay the iCloud storage for photos, because the lighting cable was failing while trying to copy the photos. So the only option is downloading them. So annoying (iPhone 8, windows 10) Extra: I loved Sarah of this video
I use a hybrid of these. I upped to 200gb that I share with my family plan. When it inevitably fills up with photos, I offload all of them onto an External HDD that has TB’s. Also: NEVER store important data on optical disks. The way they store is super finicky when it reaches over a decade’s worth of age, especially if you store them vertically.
On Mac, watch out for "documents syncing". It'll sync your documents and desktop, rapidly filling up your iCloud space. And when you opt out, all your desktop content and documents simply vanish and go "hidden". This is an extremely anti-consumer practice!
I tried this… Manually uploading and saving my iPhone photos to my PC but it’s such a pain and I keep forgetting to do it. So I ended up paying the 1$ a month storage which frankly, is plenty for my photo needs. I still upload them to my computer so I always have at least two places where my photos are stored
Tell your mom to pay the 99¢ a month for the 50 GB iCloud tier and she won't be calling again. You would not know that was a solution since they neglected to mention the Apple solution in a LMG video, as usual. No other solution is as stable or cheap as iCloud.
What do you use? Idk what to do. Rn I am in a mess btw Google Photos, local backup, ext ssd etc. I am thinking to just switch to iCloud since all I use is Apple products.
I don't understand why more people don't use the backup over wifi feature, it's so effortless and well implemented. You may need to keep your Mac up for a while the first time you set it up, but after that I think it sends only the data that has been added, moved or changed, so the normal uptime you give your PC will be plenty
@@salmiakki5638 That's not ideal. I backup mostly for saving space on my Mac and iPhone. Your method will end up filling both my iPhone and Mac very quickly.
@@hunterjay8331 I am also thinking that. However I am into photography and all my edited photos are like 25mbs each. Sooo idk if 50gb is enough or not. Or I might just go with 50gb rn and upgrade when needed.
Linus has done videos on it. Yes this is definitely an option if you want terabytes of photos and videos. But if youre average joe with less than 200 gigs, go for cloud options, google photos is very neat.
Great idea! And so much simpler than spending a whole minute buying an iCloud subscription. And for the exorbitant price of 99 cents a month, what do you get? Just a way to store all your memories forever and never to worry about losing them?
@@desmond-hawkins well with nextcloud you can access your entire storage on your phone. Sync and backup photos from your phone and so on. Just spend some money once and you can basically store everything you want.
I manually backup stuff that I want to archive periodically to external hard drives. I use free tier google drive to transfer with internet or a flash drive to manually transfer files when not in a place with wifi/internet. I don't use any cloud based service for archiving my stuff long term.
I could never honestly recommend someone to backup their photos and videos to a USB drive too many times people have come to be with important photos lost because of a failed USB drive. If you're photos are stored in a datacenter like with Google photos, OneDrive, or iCloud you never have to worry about your hard drives sudden failure.
Yet another reason that just reinforces why I got rid of iphone and went android. I removed the i-soother of their happy, happy 'it just works' playpen ... because I just ... grew out of it. I now have full control over my device and it doesnt try to upsell me, limit me or drive me to other i-centric stuff I just dont want. I still appreciate the channel tho, I still have a few dwindling family members that use it, and I have to tech help, so tutorials like this are helpful ... and Jonathan's awesome.
Great but not enough. One local backup (which is one lightning strike from being lost forever), one cloud backup (one zombie apocalypse from disappearing) and you are set. Seriously, two backups if you care about your data.
I have to say these tips were amazing, but I got tired of doing it for EVERYONE in my whole family so I paid for a subscription that would fit everyone's backups.
I don't take many pictures. Some screenshots, but I have the 50 GB option for backups. If you're like me, I think it's worth paying that extra dollar a month just so you don't have to worry about losing any data. I may move up to the more expensive options as backups can get pretty high in storage, but 50 isn't bad at all.
Great video! Would you like to do one on the space taken by "Documents and Data" by some apps and how to delete it? Why is Reddit using 1GB of storage on my phone? Or Amazon using 600MB?? There is zero need to keep any kind of history for this apps and there seems to be no clear way to delete it besides removing and re-installing each app.
It's cache data like temporary photos, videos, and other data the app downloads. To remove it some apps have a remove cache button (like Snapchat). The other way to do it without deleting the app is to go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data. Then either delete certain site data or press Remove All Website Data. Either way will require you to resign into sites and they may load slower since it has to re-download the data, instead of using the cached data (like for site icons and images). It's also important to note the Remove All Website Data will DELETE ALL OF YOUR SAFARI TABS, I learned this the hard way. So if you have tabs you'd like to keep bookmark them, to bookmark all of them hold the book icon in Safari and click Add Bookmarks for # Tabs.
@@jarboer Nice tip but worked only on some apps: Reddit and Google Maps storage usage heavily reduced but for example Amazon still using 450MB of Documents and Data. Oh well…
@@botinhas82 Yea some apps store it differently. Apps that use the in-app safari like Reddit really benefit from that method of clearing website data but not every app does. Does Amazon have a cache button in its in-app settings? Otherwise unfortunately you’ll have to delete it manually or if you aren’t to low on storage you could ignore it as well.

The event was simple: turn on photos sync and get +30 or +40 (I don't remember exactly) GB of storage. Forever. The neat part is that the cloud-synced photos do not take the cloud storage, so basically free. So now I have 42GB of cloud storage, taken up by everything I want everywhere and the photos are just synced without bothering my mind. Nothing apple in this.
Yeah, I love my iPhone, but there are some things about it that are simply inadequate. The solution is third party apps that allow better access to the files on the iPhone. It's not that hard, from a computer point of view. Apple just makes it frustratingly impossible for mere mortals.
Very useful and detailed video for managing iCloud storage, thanks for making this! I manage to fit in the basic 5GB too. I don't use iCloud backups for a long time now, since every app that I have already syncs everything with their own accounts. I also don't use iCloud Photos, mostly because of the way it works. Basically, it still takes up all the space on each of your devices until that space is needed back, instead of offloading the images to the cloud. Everything else fits in the 5GB for now.
Apple is unintuitive af nowadays. Maybe it was better than Symbian 12 years ago but now iOS is just a bloated mess designed to get you subscribed to other Apple services.
Love iCloud and think it is well worth the money. I share 2TB with my sister which works out at £3.50 (UK) each per month. A small price to pay for hassle free backups of my iPhone and MacBook.
I used to use an iPhone 12C and ran out with music of all things. (Been backing up CD's for years) and since this was something i always took with me. I ended switching to Google Drive since its free storage sync was 15GB across all devices. I ended up upgrading 200gb once i was old enough to do taxes and needed to back those up as well.
I used to have this plan. Then needed a 200GB. Then got married and got a family plan with 2TB. Still cheap and I can store all my pictures, videos, and my wife's.

@@jsimenstad The individual end user (student, teacher, employee, etc.) doesn't pay for it - your organization does. It's free for the end user.
And, in the case of EDU tenants, Microsoft gives out student licenses for free. Educational institutions only pay for non-student licenses, such as teachers and sysadmins.
@@jsimenstad it's free unlimited for schools
You forgot to mention that you can use the Lightning to USB 3 adapter and a USB hub to attach up to 4 USB drives that are FAT32 or ExFAT formatted as a potential storage option and you can use external SSDs and external HDDs as well but the HDDs require their own power supply.
I learn something new about Apple almost everyday which makes me feel glad that I didn't made the switch from Android.
Guess what happens when people glean that you know a bit about technology? I may not deal with iOS on the daily but I'm the go-to guy to fix people's iDevices.
Lol really it’s hella annoying and confusing compared to android, ICloud is a pain the ass, don’t know about making user friendly, but they beg you to subscribe indirectly to iCloud with making it difficult to stop these notifications.
I’ve been complaining about this for a year I hate clearing the notification every day. I’m glad there’s a way to make the madness stop
Thank you.
I setup family sharing. So my wife, daughter and I shared the 2tb option. I feel the price isn’t too bad for 3 of us. We use it for all our devices
yeah family sharing is at least a great option because 2TB is a wild amoung of storage for one person but shared among 3-4 the price is right and the storage is excellent.
How does family share work ? Does everyone has 666 gb then ?
@@desmond-hawkins Haha, well, I also dont drink coffee in general xD
But the storage options are still too low in my opinion. We currently only use 234GB (3 persons), but because of those 23GB I had to get the bigger plan :D
Whatever - since they make good money with it, they will try to keep it that way. Good thing I am investing in Apple stocks also xD
Sarah is getting so much better at doing videos. It also doesn't hurt that she has such a great personality and beautiful to boot.

The timing when is video popped up is just amazing.
These videos really have me simping for Sarah. That smile could save lives
urghh cringe
I just saw this video and I thought it was wonderful. I am at exactly the situation that Sarah is at with back ups to iCloud. You’ve given me some options to think about.
What I always tell friends/family who complain about having to pay for more iCloud storage when the 5GB gets full: "It's $1 or $3 a month (50/200GB) to make the problem go away and not have to keep worrying about it."
No one likes paying subscription fees, but welcome to the modern era. You're not going to care about the $3/mo you saved when your phone breaks and years of irreplaceable family photos are gone. Pay your cup of coffee per month and be done with it.
you an apple employee?
@@stylestrydes8360 nope
Dude I live for these videos now. Apple only has so many options for backups and storage so having the alternate ones are PERFECT!
Personally when I hit this limit I just threw the 99 cents at them because it really wasn't worth my time playing with the free options...
Hence APPLE ...
same bruh
also you loose so much convenience when you backup all your shit manually and its really cheap.
Yeah same, my photos/videos are like 30gb. 79p a month is worth it for the convenience.
When I saw how cheap it was for 50GB then you might as well consider that part of paying monthly for the phone plan. Probably still worth backing everything up every now and then to a external drive or computer to keep several copies just in case.
Been doing this for years with two iPhones. Each backup only takes about 1.5GB, well within the 5GB limit even after including some other stuff.
So annoying
(iPhone 8, windows 10)
Extra: I loved Sarah of this video
I love the look of genuine happiness on Sarah's face :)
3:25 he said it w a soft g, wow. Brave
I was watching this video earlier and I was trying to find it again, and I gotta say you made searching for it difficult.
On Mac, watch out for "documents syncing". It'll sync your documents and desktop, rapidly filling up your iCloud space.
And when you opt out, all your desktop content and documents simply vanish and go "hidden".
This is an extremely anti-consumer practice!
Omg I didn’t realise how much I needed this, the whole iCloud and photos deal is such a pain in the ass
8:45 I was waiting for this.
Finally an easy to follow explanation/tutorial on this so my mom can stop calling me about this all the time. Awesome job
Tell your mom to pay the 99¢ a month for the 50 GB iCloud tier and she won't be calling again. You would not know that was a solution since they neglected to mention the Apple solution in a LMG video, as usual. No other solution is as stable or cheap as iCloud.
this was one of the most useful videos I have ever come across on the internet
What do you use? Idk what to do. Rn I am in a mess btw Google Photos, local backup, ext ssd etc. I am thinking to just switch to iCloud since all I use is Apple products.
I don't understand why more people don't use the backup over wifi feature, it's so effortless and well implemented. You may need to keep your Mac up for a while the first time you set it up, but after that I think it sends only the data that has been added, moved or changed, so the normal uptime you give your PC will be plenty
iCloud photos would be the most seamless. Also the 0.99 version with 50GB would probably be enough for you as long as you delete unnecessary photos.
@@arnavodkaa Are these photos stored on your Mac or your iPhone? And do you need to access them on other devices?

Can another option be making your own cloud storage with a NAS and nextcloud?
Linus has done videos on it. Yes this is definitely an option if you want terabytes of photos and videos. But if youre average joe with less than 200 gigs, go for cloud options, google photos is very neat.
@@umersalman1 Cool im not average. Nor am I Joe. Yes!
@@desmond-hawkins 99 cents lol. Come back to this comment when u start making 8k videos and need a terabyte of space.
It’s just a backup, the photos are still on your iPhone. Everyone should always follow the 3-2-1 backup paradigm for important data they must have.
Imagine beeing able to backup everything to your own homeserver
Great but not enough. One local backup (which is one lightning strike from being lost forever), one cloud backup (one zombie apocalypse from disappearing) and you are set. Seriously, two backups if you care about your data.
I don't care about Apple, not even a bit. But this channel and its content, it is such goodness, I don't even care that I don't care.
iCloud is great for Apple users. Perfect sync, no other ssd’s drives needed for backups.
I use a Synonoly NAS - they have a backup through wifi or even from mobile if you want, and you can look at your photos from everywhere.
This might be the most valuable vid to come out if this channel. Keep up the good work!

Love how Apple is praised for intuitive design but then when you try to disable one of their services they actively make it as unintuitive as possible
