    Lichess Stockfish level 8 is not a real Stockfish, not even close. It makes poor moves from time to time, even blunders. One time it even blundered me a whole piece, then of course started playing well again but all was lost. So attempting to win in any way Stockfish cloud based, be that 15 or even 12 - not possible for a human.

    It's amazing how you can trick stockfish. It's only like 10 moves and at a depth of 18+ the engine should see this right? But I guess because brute force is too much to calculate stockfish doesn't look at lines like this because it's up 7 points of material and thinks: this must be good for me, I won't calculate more in this line.
    At least I have no other explanation why it would get mated when being up a piece in the opening.

    • @msclrhd
      @msclrhd 2 года назад +87

      The number of possible positions gets exponentially larger the more depth you add. As such, computers use some ways of scoring different moves from a given position so they can then explore what it thinks are the better moves. They will assume the opponent is playing optimally, so will typically choose the best moves that the opponent can make on the opponents turns. One of the common ways of scoring a move is by the number of points gained/lost in that move, which is typically by taking a piece. Therefore, these moves that sacrifice a lot of piece count for later gains and traps mean that the chess engine is unlikely to have explored those moves as it does not expect the opponent to be playing them, and is thus less likely to see the trap until it is too late.
      The neural network (NN) based engines (Alpha Go, Leela, etc.) don't have a built-in scoring mechanism. Instead, they work by playing a lot of games against themselves, then re-enforcing winning moves and the opposite for losing moves. Here the idea is for the neural network to determine how to evaluate the games on its own and find the patterns that work the best. This will automatically factor in material count, because if you lose a lot of pieces you are more likely to lose, but the networks learn other strategies and assessments for which moves are good/bad.
      I don't know if this is the version of stockfish that includes NN as part of its evaluation or not. It would be intersting to play this against the different engines to see how they compare.

    • @RD-uk6wt
      @RD-uk6wt 2 года назад +44

      stockfish play instantly, maybe a maximum of 2 seconds of thinking. As if the engine has unlimited time to calculate, the developers choose this way. I think if you give stockfish way more time, no player in this world has any chance to beat it.

      The machine learning methods through which Stockfish becomes the best at chess rely on it learning from millions of games in the database but if these games aren't there, Stockfish won't know what to do; I imagine a brute force chess engine will not fall for these tricks but can't say for sure.

    • @gregorymorse8423
      @gregorymorse8423 2 года назад +17

      Bad heuristics they still use concepts about material worth etc in pruning the search tree. NN is even worse as it's purely statistical accuracy, it won't ever be 100%. And if the stockfish developers see these specific cases, they can adjust the heuristics or NN training slightly to make sure it doesn't miss this again. The heuristics are quite good now, nothing like queen is 9, rook is 5, etc. They have concepts of bishop pair, knight outposts, passed pawns, zigzwang, etc in the quick heuristics to calculate a score in a given position. It's so good that even lines like this are very hard to find and becoming almost impossible to find soon at least without machine assistance.

  • @user-jv8pm1id2s
    @user-jv8pm1id2s 2 года назад +21

    Engines behave in such strange ways.
    Stockfish evaluates the game somewhere between better for white and a draw for most of the line. But it believes the position as late as move 18 is completely winning for white. After 18. a4!, black has no good move. The idea of 19. Ra3 is unstoppable, and allows Rg3 defending the mating attack in the game.
    Crazy that stockfish plays the losing blunder 18. h3, which doesn't appear to address any of the threats on the board. When analyzing this with the low depth lichess engine, it believed for like half a second that h3 is a draw, then immediately realizes it's forced mate.

In a slowly more saturated content market, if you were to slow down just a bit and spend an extra 30 seconds there explaining, I'm subscribed and watching frequently, hands down. Great video, and more constructive feedback than criticism! I still look forward to seeing more content from you!

    • @the_great_magicman1877
      @the_great_magicman1877 2 года назад +2

      If you look at the board, white can literally not move any piece except for pawns
      any knight move loses the knight, any rook move loses the rock, the bishops cannot move (one has no squares, the other is pinned to the king) and the queen is defending the pinned bishop, 1 move away from mate
      black has to keep the rook in front of the king to pin the bishop, and the queen has to threathen mate if white moves their queen
      the still living bishop is on that square to trick stockfish into attacking it, we dont care, as long as it gives our knight a square to land on later on
      with all that in mind, we have the option of going for a draw, which he mentions, or using our knight to try and get to the back rank and mate, since all whites pieces are on useless squares on the right side of the board
      anything else just gives stockfish tempo and loses the game since we are down on material with no attack or tricks
      these videos are not supposed to be educational or puzzles, its just a showcase of a very niche line youll never play, so you only have to follow the moves and enjoy the show, id recommend watching a few opening videos if you want to improve your rating and develop more understanding of the early to mid game, where most of the gambits happen, then again, im a 2200 puzzle player, so maybe i just find it easier to see moves if i know theyre there

    Joe played Qh1. I played c3 developing & adding another defender.
    Joe plays Kb8. Joe symbol is 🖤 representing black. And I'm 🐠 representing Stock 🐠 in white. And the rest of the moves are as follows.

However I'm thinking seeing as you're low on material & you Q👑 appears to already be in a fairly strong position. I'm 90% positive you're not going for the Q👑 trade off at this juncture correct?

    Ok so I'm thinking now that have my Rook on f3 between your Q👑 & Bishop. The best move that I can come up with for U is Bxe2. moving your Q👑 to e6 wouldn't make a lot of sense at this point because I would just capture your Bishop on f3 with my Rook..Ect- ect no matter how U play that one out it leads to a sh*tty position for you.
    Obviously if you attempt to capture my Rook with your Q👑 I just take your Rook with one of my Pawns. And any move u make with one of your knights or Rook would just simply lead to the lose of your Q👑.
    So I think the best move you have is as I already stated: Bxe2. In which I take back Qxe2. Ok sofar your drunken Bishop ideas seem tobe sobering up a bit here. & from calculations- although you can check on Stock 🐠 for salvation if you wish- you're going to need a new game in Order to defeat me. Perhaps "Adamisko šach" would like you to say his name a bit better. "šach" is the word for "chess" in Czech and Slovak, and is pronounced "shakh".

    5:47 why not give a check from Nf3 instead?? You'd still win the rook, but then you'd have a diagonal path to the back rank with ++!

    Entertaining video, but I don't like the misleading title. Clearly tries to make the viewer think he "beat stockfish" when in reality it was a lower level version of it making stupid blunders.
