- It's A Level results day and hopefully you've found out that you're going to university! So... what now? Here are all of the things I wish I'd known before my first year at uni! From freshers week, to packing, to flatmates, and shared bathrooms, here's all the wisdom* I think I've acquired over my first year at university!

I’m going to university in September and I’m terrified... I still feel so young and I just do not feel prepared or ready whatsoever

Jack, please pin this, because it was missing from your video and it is something I struggled with in my first two years: One thing I wish I’d known before uni (6 years ago already, now in my MA): Yes, do things outside your comfort zone but it is also 100% TOTALLY fine if you are not a going out/ party person and prefer staying in with friends and have a cup tea (or even without friends). You are not strange or alone and you WILL find like-minded people. It’s your uni time and really, do what you like and don’t have fear of missing out about those parties because if you’re not a party person, you’re really not missing anything!

WASH POPPIN I skipped freshers week altogether and felt guilty for two years, but now I know I wouldn’t have liked it any way. Do join societies and do what Jack says, go up to people and say hi. You’ll find your people. Don’t expect to have best friends in the first week. What jack says is true, the first semester isn’t that great. But you’ll find people if you give it time :)
Thank you for this! I'm not a party person as I find all the loud noise and drunk people everywhere very overwhelming and I don't drink either. I was worried that people would think I'm boring, especially with me being a guy, I think there's more pressure to go out and "get smashed" with lads than there is with girls. It sucks.
I Look Like a Toe That might well be true, but remember, the die-hard party goers wouldn’t be your best friends anyway. The best tip is just to join societies in things you enjoy, or if there’s nothing special you like, I remember UCC having a Hot Beverages society, i.e. just an excuse to meet people. So I’d advise to join societies and to say hi to people in your degree, they’re the ones you share at least one interest in, probably more! I feel a lot of people in my degree, I connect with quite well, even if they are partygoers. Also, people at uni are more grown up and thus more likely to just respect who you are: I have friends who do like going out, and I then go home at 11, but they don’t mind and they always promise me I am not really missing out because I wouldn’t like what happens (drinking, noise, etc) anyway :)
Thanks so much for your comment, really reassuring :) I took a gap year and have a lot of friends who already went to uni who all love clubbing/drinking etc. which is really the opposite to me. I find there's a lot of pressure to drink and go out at my age and my parents keep telling me I should do it or I'll be missing out. Nice to hear it's not just me that's like this though :)
I got my results today and they were enough to get into my top choice of uni, but then I found out that I had been rejected and got my insurance choice instead, and I was pretty gutted. I was about to give up calling my university when I got help and found out that there had been a mistake. They had missed out my fourth A Level and said that I actually had a place! I'm glad I didn't give up and am now going to my top choice 😁

utilise university councillors and resources if you start to struggle - wishing you all the very best ❤️
Just found out this morning I got my first choice (Bath for engineering) and I'm so thrilled. Your channel was definitely a big stress reliever during exams so I just wanted to say thank you
i went from a D in politics last year to 2A*s and an A, with full marks in 2 of my politics!! (at collyers!!!!!) going to uni of Bristol in September, rewatching all ur uni vlogs to get myself hyped🧡

I'm working so so hard for it at the moment I'm the first in my class to have given the first draft of my personal statement to my tutor and I'm buzzing! Hey Jack, I just came across your channel (like literally just a few hours ago) and I have no shame in admitting that i've binged through a good 60% of your videos already. You're sweet, kind and funny and you're the first university blog that I dont mind listening to without visuals and its just constant talking. Subhan Ahmed Thanks! AQA for chem, bio and German and Edexcel for Maths. If you like Bio and Chem, go for it! They are so interesting. Only advise is to try understand all of the content in lessons and do as many past paper questions as you can!

I’d like to add that as someone going into third year we’re not scary and after two years we are willing to give advice and have a chat 😂 don’t stress too much about grades because I found that way I never did as well the stress just showed in my essays , do go to your personal tutor because they’re the most helpful people when it comes to anything uni related

Great video! 100% agree with the point about referencing, and not that anyone will read this but the way I'd recommend is to do crap referencing as you go along (I normally write something like 'Wilson p60' in the footnotes) and then when you go back to do proper footnotes you won't forget where the reference was. Oh and just do your bibliography before you write the essay because a) it means you don't have to sit there with 'word count: 0' and b) after slogging through the essay you won't feel like doing it.

Budgeting can be tough. Get an account with either Monzo or Starling. You can budget within the app and it categorises your spending for you making it easier to manage.
