- From former Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel, who now plays in the eighth tier of Slovakian football, to World Cup and two-time Bundesliga winner Kevin Grosskreutz, who now plays for amateur German outfit SV Wacker Obercastrop, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of high-profile footballers now playing for obscure clubs in amateur leagues.

Seen this commented elsewhere but the fact that Skrtel can grow a full head of hair but chose to rock a skinhead throughout his time at Liverpool is brilliant 😂
Shows how unhinged he was 😂
Skartin Myrtle
I assumed that he was bald because his hairline receded. That surprised me 😱 x
What about Paul Konchesky?
@@dazzaMusic Was he bald by choice?
you unfortunately forgot to mention Varane and Casemiro. from playing at arguably the greatest club in history to the depths of playing for Manchester United
Manchester is not really low level 😂 If it was you had to include Chelsea as well
Oof
@@PeterPan-ht6ylit's a joke bro!
@@RonnieWave there is some truth to it, though 😂
@@PeterPan-ht6yl 😭
A HITC Sevens intro that's less than 2 minutes long? We're in new territory indeed
To keep the average since the intro for the chants video was some 7 minutes.
In Italy, a goalkeeper named Marco Ballotta went, at around 46, to play as a striker in 9th division, scoring around 20 goals 😂
Wait, Ballotta is still playing? Awesome!
@@tomdreler6528 haha no that was until like 7 years ago
Brilliant
smurfing lmao
guess that shows how huge the skill gap is
I once played in a 5-a-side tournament against a team featuring an approximately 40 year old Lee Sharpe. The guy was unreal. Absolutely destroyed us.
I played 6-a-side a few months ago locally to me (Maidstone United stadium)… played Jordon Ibe. Fellla ran rings around all of us 😂
...Lee Sharpe walked into my bedroom at a house party in Leeds in early 2000. My room was being used as a cloakroom.
Following term, I was telling another student the story at another house party and guess who walked into the room?😆
You'd see Robbie Keane, Michael Bridges and Rio surrounded by packs of roasties in Leeds nightclubs but Lee was always hanging out with his mates and University students. Sampdoria legend!
@@w00df0rdJay from the Inbetweeners is that you?
@@cheese2742 ooo football friend
Lee Sharpe..Lee Sharpe.....
Ahhh it was Ryan Giggs
Haven't heard of Eremenko since FIFA 15,very nostalgic hearing of him
He really doesn't belong in this video though. AFAIK his Honka contract was only for 2023 (no football in the winter for understandable reasons), and they played in the top flight in 2023 until bankruptcy after the season. I don't know if he will return for next season, but it would be a bit of a surprise. He can easily join a less turbulent team in the area if he wants to keep playing or pursue a managerial career.
The 1st time i won d1 in FUT..cheap 532 team..he was in it...jeremy menez. ..cant remem any more
Absolute legend at Rubin Kazan in FIFA back in the day
Former Fulham top scorer Collins John was playing at 8th tier SV Buitenboys as recently as last summer
He had a teammate at Fulham called John Collins. Symmetry
@@nikobellic570 Random fact: I'm an NBA (basketball) Atlanta Hawks fan, and there used to be a talent called John Collins in the team (who once dunked over Joel Embiid). After a drop in athletism, he was traded to Utah Jazz in summer this year, and today I heard news that the new team also wants to trade him.
One hilarious thing I learned recently, but Kevin Grosskreutz has an amazing ability in the new Football Manager that just proves how much of a utility man he is: He is listed as being able to play EVERY position. Primarily CB and up the right, but literally everything from striker back to even goalkeeper.
Back in Dortmund, he played almost all positions (including Goalkeeper). He was mainly set on the wings though.
@@informatikabos5481 yeah in my mind he's a winger, crazy that he plays CB now haha
Well years ago when I played the older fifas I always bought him and played him as a striker even though his position was rb in the game.
I always loved finding players who can cover anywhere on the pitch in my lower league games. Sometimes I would just force a player into a position based on his best attributes until it got listed as one of his positions.
Matt Lowton, the ex-Burnley, Villa, Sheff Utd full-back who was only at Huddersfield last season under Warnock is now at 8th tier Witton Albion
One player he wqs😢
@@JackWarmer09 scored a free kick last weekend as well. Absolute belter

Probably preparing to buy the club
He started at Burnley in the prem as well so that’s crazy
Martin Harnik, 36 years old, with 68 caps for Austria, now plays for TuS Dasseldorf, in the german 5th tier Oberliga Hamburg, a league composed of teams from Hamburg and immediate suburbs.
Martin Harnik broooo😭😭😭 I remember he Threw so Many Chances at VfB😭😭😭😭🤍❤️
imo the bender brothers (lars & sven) are worth mentioning.
they both play for local team TSV Brannenburg in a low german division "Kreisklasse"
Maybe a what is going on at Forest Green video? Possibly on their way to a double relegation out of the EFL, having risen up to League One with environmental money.
And the rise of Raków Częstochowa 🇵🇱 would be good too (I doubt those two teams have ever been mentioned in the same breath before)
This would be great
What's environmental money?
Sven and Lars Bender. Both got caps with the Gerrman National Team played Bundesliga, Champions League and ar now playing somewhere in deep south of Bavaria with their home club TSV Brannenburg in the 8th! tier.
Honourable mention:
Leroy Lita, former premier league player for Bristol City, Reading, middlesborough and many others is now playing for Nuneaton Borough in the 8th tier, don’t know if he’s been mentioned before however but saw him playing for Nuneaton last Saturday vs Fylde which was a big surprise
Watched him play against Royston Town in September with no prior knowledge of him playing for the Boro.. so shocked. Legs are fully gone, but played the full 90.
@@Mlaargaar yep, fair play to him for still playing though and not being dreadful. Was playing before I was born 🤣
Played against Alexander frei a few years ago . He joined he’s youth club again together with Marco streller and ripped through Swiss amateur leagues. I never played higher than 4th Swiss league (2nd lowest tier ) but even as a then 17 yo I was slower and had less stamina than those retired pros . Not even talking about technical ability. We lost 9-0 or something . Both of them scoring 4
1. Ronaldo
2. Benzema
3. Neymar
4. Mahrez
5. Mane
6. Kante
7. Firmino
This is the only answer
You would never take a different job for more money right?
@@Marrtinike19 Suggesting that these people weren't making enough money before they moved to Saudi Arabia is absurd.
I did not suggest anything like that, but its kinda human thing to take jobs that pays better and that are probably more relaxing @@h3nder
@Marrtinike19 Weirdly, I would also take into account who I am working for, what they do, and what I am contributing to, not just my bank account. Martin, meet morals
Oumar niasse (ex Everton striker) recently signed for Macclesfield in the Northern Premier League Premier Division (7th tier). Thought this deserved to be included, if you're including Andre Wisdom, who plays in the division above.
Do you think National North is a REALLY low level?
Honestly no I don't. I'd say The national league North/South are the best quality 6th tier leagues in world football. Probably better than a lot of other European 3rd/4th tier leagues.
@@ryanknowles5623 makes sense, Niasse was never the best on the ball, erratic style of play
Martin Hinteregger is the prime example. Only one year after winning the europa league as a key player in Frankfurt, he played for his seventh tier austrian home village club. With 20 kilos more than one year prior as a centre forward just living his best life.
Wasn’t there something about him officially retiring because Frankfurt were going to sack him anyway for supporting a known Nazi?
Centre forward now??? Lmao that's crazy, I remember not being able to find his fifa card and finding out that he went there 😂
Apparently he retired from professional football at 29 because he supposedly had links with far-right politics.
@@iforgor421 he started a football camp in his village with the support of a wealthy local investor who has strong ties in the neo-fascist community. That was revealed by a magazine and Hinti claims to not have known anything about this, but it was pretty well known locally.
Now it's up for interpretation what you think really happened but I personally think he was a little dumb, knew about his partner's political background but simply didn't care in favour of his project. I wouldn't think that he himself shares extreme right ideology as he never previously indicated it but I guess we'll never know.
I also think that he didn't boost retire because of that, he seems to be perfectly happy with his now again rural down to earth lifestyle.
@@raphaelovicstrassovic9440 thanks for the insight bro:)
Kevin still forever part of the bvb family🖤💛
Finally! Full Circle Moment…I used to play for SV WACKER OBERCASTROP 🙏 and Ive been subscribed for more then a few years. Top Content ❤
Video Idea: The expansion of the World Cup to include 48 teams, and it's impact, for better or worse, on the sport.
I think he's made his feelings known. And done a video on it iirc
He's not a fan but I think it's too soon to talk about its impact.
Adding to the Hernanes section, before his permanent return to São Paulo in 2019, he came back on loan back in 2017 and saved us from relegation, forever a club legend in my books
And then you got relegated anyway
Eremenko most likely won't play in Kakkonen which now became Finnish 4th tier because of the re-arrangement of the league system. Eremenko alongside other players from Honka squad have been released by the club and most likely will seek for better club. Couple players like Naamo and Laine already found a new club from Veikkausliiga (top tier) so most likely Eremenko will play top tier football next year as well.
Raphael Varane and Casemiro are two former superstars who now play at a really low level. If you know what I mean.
Ouch, as a United fan the truth hurts 😔
Ouch, im not a Man U fan but ouch!
Johnstone Burgh currently smoking it in 10th place of 16 teams in the WoS Division 1 😂
Horrendous pronunciation of Burgh 😢
@@grahammc3189This is Alfie we’re talking about though 😂
i saw edgar davids play for barnet and paul gascoigne play for burnely (when they were in the bottom division). that was pretty cool
I love how Edgar took jersey #1 when he played at Barnet :) Imagine being keeper for Barnet and Edgar fkn Davids asks you to use the shirt number :)
Gascoigne played for Burnley when they were in the old Division One (now the Championship).
Gazza also played for Boston United and a Chinese team after Burnley
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things 😁👍
It used to be common dropping down the divisions before they earned enough to retire on (that's the age of 19 at Chelsea), but nowadays tends to be only players that have been nicked or have gambling additctions.
11:36 love that dig at Sunderland
HITC sevens video suggestion: best/most successful number 2 or 3 GKs ever. Criteria might be something like minimum number of times on the beach > 200, number 1st team appearances < 60. Or some ratio like bench:apps > 20. Or something like that. Would be fun to see who the most succesful number 2 keeper would be, like Scot Carson at City having 11 trophies as a backup keeper
Best goalkeeper who is complete shit: Steve Mandanda. Somehow went to the World Cup while also being so shit at Crystal Palace that he quit and went back home in the middle of his first season.
There's nothing wrong with it. If you can still compete at a level more suited to you, and have an impact on your teammates and fans, then that's great. How awesome must it be for fans of those teams to get to see a legend in their local team's shirt?
I remember when Edgar Davids, one of my favorite players ever, signed for my favorite team, Crystal Palace. I lost my mind! He was nowhere near the level he was in his prime, but it was so freaking cool seeing him in a Palace shirt...and then he even signed for Barnet in League Two!
Radja Nainggolan, was playing in Italian Serie A, now playing in Indonesian League
Came in to see old stars still kicking, came out with a great recommendation for a restaurant in Italy.
I used to play for TUS Bövinghausen as a youth player and had my school sports on the pitch of Wacker Obercastrop, hearing this in your video feels like a fever dream hahaha
What about the mighty Jo Tessem?
Played for Southampton and the Norway national team… now at Hythe and Dibden FC in the “who gives a toss” league in English football
Really like your vids, Alfie. Keep it up 🤜🏽🤛🏽
Hernanes is living the dream and I’m all for it. He was a spectacular player during his peak.
Glad you mentioned Eremenko, thought people had forgot about him already. Your pronunciation of Ykkönen and Kakkonen was horrible but thats whats expected. And as many people pointed out he probably will go back to Veikkausliiga (highest division in Finland).
One other Finnish "star" that could've been mentioned would be Perparim Hetemaj, most notably known for his presence in Serie A playing with Chievo. He recently hanged his boots, but also announced that he is still playing in "Vitonen" the 7th division in Finland with Gilla FC.
In 2015, i was playing 5th Division in Finland, went to Jakobstad for a match, saw the opponents had a few oldies . Thought easy game.. there was this one old guy.. he could do anything he wanted with the ball.. i was playing as a striker, got pissed watching the guy cook our defenders, i decided to track back and give him a little nudge, he cooked me.. i just couldn't believe my eyes.. a few years later i was telling sone guy about the experience.. he asked if the guy's name was aleksi i said yes . Then he laughed so hard.. that's alexei Eremenko.
Playing vets football in the south east of England I've come across Liam George, Matty Spring, John Dreyer, Dino Miraana "sorry for spelling" and Fulhams finest Andy Johnson. They all need there fix somehow so fair play to them.
Adrian Mariappa who used to play for Reading, Watford and Crystal Palace in the premier league and is now playing for Salford City in League 2 in England.
Does that really count? They're trying to buy their way up the leagues.
As a casual football watcher, out of these i have only heard of martin Škrtel
You should search for Hernanes's highlights. He was a superb player during his prime (São Paulo/Lazio days).
My favorite example of this from the past would probably be Mario Kempes: who went from winning the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at the 1978 World Cup and winning the scoring title in La Liga twice, to playing for tiny clubs in Austria, Indonesia, and Albania.
Rivaldo playing in the Uzbekistan and Angolan leagues is entertaining too
@@NineHands I think you mean Rivaldo
@@johnnythemachine6949 oh sorry! Yes I do lol.
Rafael van der vaart.. doesn't play anymore, but he ended his career in the 9th tier of danish football.
I look forward to another installment. Plenty of names to choose from:
*Miroslav Stoch (Slovakian 3rd tier)
*Miguel Angel Ponce (US 4th Tier)
*Ross McCormack, Wes Hoolahan, Charlie Mulgrew (Doncaster City - 11th Tier)
* Charlie Austin (AFC Totton - 7th Tier)
* Adam Le Fondre (FC United of Manchester - 8th Tier)
* Mark Beevers (Bradford Park Avenue - English 8th Tier)
*Marcin Budzinski (Polish 4th Tier)
German Denis at La Favorita in San Marino after a few years in the Italian lower leagues.
It's La Fiorita, though La Favorita would be an awesome name.
I believe Christian Fuchs is now playing in the upsl, the 4th tier of American Soccer/Football
I thought he wanted to be a placekicker in the NFL.
I remember claiming that Hermanes would go on to challenge for the Balon d'Or. It didn't quite work out that way, but he still had a pretty decent career x
Christian Träsch who played for Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and the german national team now plays in deepest german tier for FC Gerolfing
dude is legit Träsch
Fun fact: Dennis Wise is actually Andre Wisdoms stepdad. Andres mum is named Denise Wisdom Wise 😉🤫
And the award for the most redundant surname does to... LOL
Hey, Eremenko won't even be in the finnish third tier next season, since kakkonen will be the fourth tier next year. Following the creation of new second tier ''ykkösliiga'' or league one
Skertel's story is actually pretty wholesome and inspiring
Love seeing the WoSFL mentioned as an Auchinleck Talbot supporter. That greatly pleased me today.
Also btw. It's Johnstone Burgh as it's spelt but it's pronounced more like burrow. Burra I suppose might be how you'd write it.
me as a finnish hearing the pronunciation of Ykkönen and Kakkonen in english...yeah...i guess our language is pretty hard...respect for trying though. btw Eremenko and FC Honka actually play in Finnish top flight Veikkausliiga
Ei enää, mutta ei ole kyllä peliäkään vielä kakkosessa pelannut
Ei enää, mutta ei ole kyllä peliäkään vielä kakkosessa pelannut
Oh, they got bankrupted, didn't know about that
I literally play for one of FC Honka’s youth hobby teams, and had absolutely no clue we’d declared bankruptcy 😂😂
Here is Perth, Australia we have
Leigh Griffiths playing for Mandurah City (WA State Leage 1 - technically 3rd tier, but a looong way off the top)
Andy Keogh playing for North Beach (WA Amateur Premier Leage - technically 5th tier)
Another one you missed is Morgan Schneiderlin, who now plays at a Greek club that was founded in 2012.
Timestamps with names of the players would be good
You forgot about Riise. Riise is a Liverpool legend, and won the UCL with then in 2005 after their miraculous comeback in Istanbul, and the only one from Liverpool to miss his penalty in the penalty shootout. Now, he plays for Avaldsnes after a 5-year hiatus, which are in the Fourth Division, the fifth tier of Norwegian football. Before that, he played for SK Rollon, who are in the same division as Avaldsnes.
There's also Milan Baros, who also played for Liverpool when they won the 2005 UCL. Now, he plays in FK Vigantice, in the 6th tier of Czech football, and it's so obscure that Wikipedia thinks he retired💀
Hernanes' ending was oddly wholesome. Top tier footballer to top tier..chef? Bro literally cooked lmao.
5:56 is that their stadium? Do they keep cows in it in winter?
i think i'm gonna see pogba in this list after a few years playing in some random eastern european 4th division club
I wouldn't mind to see Alfie traveling abroad to review restaurants haha a great job
Skrtel is such a fucking warrior. Love him.
Funny thing is, that going into this video, I knew about the WOSFL, because me and my friend wwere trying to see how long it would take for a newly formed time to make it to the Scottish premiership
9 years?
8:42 Started in the youth set up at Bradford City and was one of a few players we moved on with big expectations and a sell on clause without ever making the 1st team squad. To add to an ever growing list. Don’t recall what or if we ever got anything from his subsequent transfer or if we had picked up on the fact most of those contracts included loan fees too. But it’s safe to say his career didn’t end up as many expected.
That's why bffc can't get promoted always selling all they beat youth players
Thank you Alfie & wish you a Happy Christmas. Can we please have a video about Maltese Football ⚽ Thank you
Really appreciate you no longer saying "it goes without saying!" During your outros. Very meta
The Adu joke doesn't get old does it
Big “So what?” to this. Older players, who still love the game, now play it for fun at a lower level. What’s wrong with that? It’s not any kind of fall from grace. It’s just life. And having played with some former top class players in exhibition games, I can attest that even aging pros can make the best of the rest look 100% pants!
Warrington Town! Love that my local towns team has been mentioned 😂 love it
Eremenko played in the Finnish league (Veikkausliiga) this season. The Honka you mention in the video is (was) the Academy or second team. Finland plays a summer league, so the season is just over - Honka went bust in the end of the season. Eremenko won't be playing in the 3rd tier next summer.
I actually saw that one guy on youtube that reviews michelin star restaurants, review his restaurant. Never knew it was Hernanes'.
Damn, I actually forgot that Wisdom actually played here in Salzburg
Alfie! When is 'The 7 Greatest LW since 2000'! I have been waiting in anticipation (except for 1 who we all know is)
Hey you guys forgot about Christian Fuchs who plays in the US 4th tier for FSA Pro in the UPSL Northeast!
Roman Eremenko was pretty good back in the day, a technically classy midfielder for Dynamo Kyiv. His drugs ban was a big waste of talent
Career mode baller back in the day
The only reason I know Eremenko is because of playing the 2010 world cup game
i think you got this wrong...
they are playing because they like football... and that is great.
i am 69 but still and play sports all the time and I love it ... :)
Am I the only one who thinks that calling Dorrans a former super star is kinda stretching the limits of the word to breaking point?
The fact that they are still playing is testament of their quality. Change your video Title.
Have you read about the former Italian international that Beverley Town FC signed because he moved there and happened to get into a chat with the coach on a dog walk?
Which player? I live not far from Beverley hadn't heard this?
Fun fact skrtel is one of the younger players in that team
Forgot about ben greenhalgh, from winning the champions league with inter Milan he now plays for margate
Superstars? Come on! I'm a football fan since 2000 and the only two names I know from the list are Skrtel and Grosskreutz. Rest of them are NOT the superstars and they never were actually. Superstars are players such as Lewandowski, Haaland, Mbappe, Sane, Kimmich, Harry Kare, Kroos, Modric etc. Those who are on the list are maybe kinda famous players but they are not even close to superstar level, except Skrtel and Grosskreutz
Alfie could you do a video on best/worst nicknames?
I've always wanted to see if there are any football clubs who have special customs or traditions that coincide with Christmas. I know this suggestion may be late but if such clubs exist, can we see something like that?
hooray, my team (Uerdingen) is mentioned on my favorite football channel :O
Wee correction, in Johnstone Burgh. The Burgh is pronounced Burra, same as the way you would say Edinburgh. Great video again though. 😊
Grant holt is still kicking about for Wroxham F.C
Can’t tell you how weird it is to have Alfie pronounce Wacker Obercastrop, my local club 😂
Where is Raja Naiggolan, who was a Belgian superstar for Belgium team and Serie A teams who now plays in a small country named Indonesia?
With sports science improving and prolonging playing careers, we might see more players doing this in the future.
Marco Fabián went from Bayern leverkusen to professional indoor soccer 😅
2:15 .... meanwhile me in northern ireland with 1.9 million people ... I miss when it was just 1.2 million people it's overpopulated now
€75/€90 isn't bad for a tasting menu at an upscale restaurant.
7:50 Kakkonen is Finlands third division. Top flight is Veikkausliiga. And you are right Ykkönen is not pronaunced like that.😂
In germany its kind of normal that players join their childhood club after their professional career…
Great names to sign in FM this year.
Good signing if your playing like 7th division lol
Kevin Großkreutz still plays in 2023 😮
