- I recently had a chance to shoot a local precision rifle match so I decided to bring you along for the journey. In this video we'll explore my process for getting ready to shoot a match, take an in depth look at my performance on each stage and then wrap up at the end with my thoughts on how I performed and provide you a handful of tips to keep in mind if you want to go out and be competitive in a precision rifle match.

Its worth mentioning that new shooters are treated VERY well at most of these events. Don't be afraid to get out there and try one.

That’s a fact. I’m look like probably one of the last people you’d see out at the range. I expected an unwelcoming experience but those guys turned out to be some of the nicest people I’ve ever shot with!
Right on! The people who actually shoot matches are much different than your know it all keyboard warriors. I've met a lot of really good people and made a lot of new friends from getting involved in competitive shooting. Also, you don't have to have a Gucci gun to have fun and be competitive. I run a 20in .223 gas gun in 600yd F-T/R for the past 2yrs and have a blast, which is my biggest goal, I was told it can't be done but have 3 medals to prove it can be. Condition reading is my biggest weakness.

True that! The first one I went to was a rather large shoot but it was a fun experience! It’s all support by other shooters!
Not in a mean spirited way... but in an encouraging way... It was nice to see you handle struggling. You could see it in your posture in the stage before the roof. The advice to set personal goals and reflect on those is priceless. Thanks
Oh man the struggle is part of it…. It was for sure annoying me and it started to show. Just had to take a step back and decide to try something as what I was doing clearly wasn’t working. Casually shooting targets on a range is fun and has value but getting out and shooting a match is a way to really improve your skills…. Something about that timer and shooting with others makes even the most basic tasks become challenging. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Previously, have you noticed a bench zero differing that much from a positional zero? Did you verify your zero back at your home range? Was there enough wind at the match to cause the need for a zero change? Serious questions, not picking at you. I'm here to learn.

Hey Maxi-Mullet! As an older and far more mature shooter, 😂😂😂😂😂, I just want to say that I absolutely love your channel. I too, built an 6 ARC on a Gibbz arms lower set, an 18” Proof Research barrel, and blah blah blah. I’m shooting some 110 gr Hornady A-tips and my S.D. is running very consistently at 9. Velocity is right at 2523, and it’s easy peasy on the brass. Waiting on my can to show up so I can complete the package and with the current load I’m shooting bugholes at 100 yds and pretty much the same at 200. Was able to run the gun out in the desert the other day and the winds were NOT kind, yet, that little 6 mm pill did a fantastic job. Shot her out to 1265 yds, and due to my advanced years and crabby disposition, put 13 out of 20 on steel. I almost smiled but didn’t want to hurt my face! I’m really liking this and am currently rebarrelling my 591R from 6.5X47 Lapua to 6 mm Creedmore. With two new knees and a new shoulder, that 6 mm has a new fan!

Adjusting barometric pressure gives you better data than simply inputting altitude because programs use a standard altitude/air density chart at a standard temp/humidity so weather effects real world air density quite a lot.
Even without an anemometer its easy to look up your closest station pressure (usually airports) and get the barometric pressure from that and combined with a good estimate on altitude the data your ballistics app spits out will be much more accurate than using just one or the other. It may not make a huge difference for something like a PRS match but if you really want to get good data from your ballistic apps you need to accurately input the best data possible.

These are the kinds of videos I believe help me get better at PRS 22/ NRL 22. I'm working up to PRS and plan to after I get a new barrel.
Nice shooting! Some of those targets, like the rulers, look really narrow. Also that match had a lot of positions that would be tough on older shooters; I don’t bend quite as well as I used to. Enjoyed watching.
Great video. I've been following you for a while now, and I've been jealous seeing those open, hilly fields you've been shooting your older videos. Imagine my shock when you're actually in Georgia shooing my friend's match! I've been meaning to get out there but haven't the chance yet. But thanks to this video, I now know what his matches look like.

Absolutely incredible content. Thank you. I’ve always thought that augmenting the stability of the shooter as opposed to the rifle would be really cool. Seated on a chair with one leg shorter, standing in mud or on a tire. Seated on a beach ball or a playground swing…I know, dangerous AF but if I were king, (and that’s probably why I’m not).

I feel like my advice to a new competitor would be the opposite. Take your time, don’t rush, if you time out that’s okay. Just focus on building good positions and finding your targets.
I want to get into competitive shooting myself. I'm in the investigative state right now to see exactly what I'd like to shoot. I've always loved long-range precision and will probably go that way in bolt action, if i can afford it. Lol
I've been saving my pennies for a while and i don't want to go buying things that are a waste. I plan on spending a good chunk on glass and then go from there.
Here is the catch though, I'm in a wheelchair from a motorcycle accident that left me a paraplegic, so my options are going to be limited I'm sure. I know that the NRA has some things, just not sure if they have lrps. We have a new year coming and I plan on taking a vaca to a shooting match to get some info. Any shared here would be VERY appreciated!!! Love the info you share on your videos. Keep it going and real. Thanks
Thanks for this vid. I'd really like to get out there and try shooting a match. Just finished an 18" 6arc build (because of your vids) and was able to get about a 5/8" group at 100yd, couldn't be happier with it.

Great review of the match and your performance. Some of those targets were tough! Probably cleaner sight picture to the shooter, but still tough contrast on a few from my POV.
Do you think the stage time constraints were tight enough to consider how fast you move into position, and how fast your position is stabilized? In USPSA pistol/PCC, speed and efficiency of movement become more critical as you try to rank higher in matches. Marksmanship becomes a "given" and your efficiency between positions, and at positions, becomes paramount. Did that match feel like it rushed you on positions?

Try dialing elevation with right hand, so you can keep support bag and reticle on target between targets by maintaining bag support. Great video, impressed with the 6ARC.
Just to clarify to everyone that doesn't know: it doesn't matter whether you time out or not. Only hits matter. It's better to take 6 good shots than 12 bad ones. You won't learn anything from bad shots. Like your content and hopefully you go to another match soon and we can see the progress :) Train more with the barricade bag and try keep your heel on the ground. Best thing people can do to improve is to shoot off of some sort of barricade: a ladder, bench(with just a bag) etc..
taken to the extreme, I go so slow trying the make that perfect shot that I never get my shots off and fatigue in a position. the right way lays somewhere in the middle.
Hardest step is getting out there and doing a match. So much fun. Get out there!
Would be fun to be able to analyze my self with video. Don’t take this wrong but you had a large wobble zone. Add Stability by pinching the bag on the prop. Also target acquisition was a bit slow at times. I personally never touch my magnification running it at 15x. Really focusing on looking down/over the rifle at a landmark for the target so I’m not searching. I would love to have video to analyze though. Would be fun to review. Our matches appear to be harder courses of fire. Would be tough to video with all the target movement
I shoot about 20 matches yearly from Steel Challenge , Sig Super Steel , 2Gun , USPSA and PRS Gas Gun .
I got into PRS Gas Gun last year . First match I shoot 556N and did ok but definitely wish I shot my 6ARC . Second PRS Gas Gun Match I shot my 6ARC and did way better . Holding less Mils in your scope makes a huge difference IMO . Some stages I did dial others I used the reticle . I use ATHLON 1-10× Ares UHD ETR Mil FFP ATMR3 Optic on 1.7 Mount . Even when shooting out to 600Y I find myself being at 6x the most .
One thing I need to work on is locating the target faster in my optic . I wasted so much time just looking for the dang target . Once I found it I was GTG . I had to crank down to 2x or 3x then crank back up because I couldn't find it .
Luckily for PRS GAS GUN we aren't shooting super super small targets . Usually they are 1.5 - 2MOA targets at distance . We did have bonus target at 589Y that was 3" plate . You only got 1 shot at it . I didnt hit it but there was 2 dudes in our squad that did .
I did not use any bags or any other aids that actually help . I just used BIPOD . I also used VFG so I could jam into barricades for more leverage / support . Using heavier Rig IMO helps way more than you think . I run Quad Rails on all my PRS Gas Gub Setups . That extra 1 to 2 pounds makes a huge difference IMO .

Also, in you talking head shots it looks like your camera is back focusing some (ie - background clear and face a little blurry). I’ve noticed it in a few vids.
I just recently shot a USPSA match with a rifle for the first time! I placed 18 out 29 so it wasn’t good but I also wasn’t mad considering it was my first match

Very interesting and informative. I didn't even know there was a division for ARs. All I see online are high dollar bolt guns.
Well I wouldn’t say there is a division for ARs…. I was running this rig along side all the bolt guns and in my opinion holding my own. The only divisions they had were open and tactical which is defined by caliber

Fun getting to see what you see through your scope in the match. Kind of did this back in the middle 1995 but we only had 200 yards to work with so we made the targets smaller to give the appearance of longer shots. I’m to old and can’t move fast enough and get into some of those positions being an old fat guy lol 😂. Again get video and did I understand you correctly that you are living back in Georgia again and not Washington state?

But I would disagree with you on one thing. I Wallis always tell new shooters to concentrate on building a good position and getting a good shot off with follow threw to hopefully spot your impacts or miss. Working on these to make a clean shot will teach you more than rushing threw trying not to time out and potentially missing and not knowing where your shot is going.

Awesome shooting but I feel like you're maybe using that bag as a comfort blanket? Try shooting without and looking at where the "centre of gravity" shifts to and see if you can pivot around that instead of the bag.

As for your hitting right, I was expecting that from your 100 yard zero. Looks like you got yourself together quickly after being on break a few years. I’m in Upstate SC and really need to try this next year.

Many places in the country have limited distances available to shoot so you’ve got to make do with what you have available. If you can only access shorter distances then typically you’ll see smaller targets and more positional type shooting stages to increase the difficulty. My opinion shooting the positional stuff is a great way to improve your proficiency as a marksman so I love doing it!
I definitely think something was up with your zero. Watching your position over the target as you pulled the shots, you were consistent and seemed to be holding where the previous impacts where.
Zero offsets in ballistics app! Double kneel when possible. Back off shoulder pressure till wobble settles. Dont shoot the same miss twice

love your videos man, I noticed right away that your bipod position continues to get in the way of your gamechanger. Its hindering the amount of surface area you're able to cover on the forend. I would move the bipod forward a bit more or just get a smaller gamechanger. Hope it helps man. Its such an addicting sport.

Not really necessary for shooting at these closer distances so I didn’t run one
I respectfully disagree. Even at those distances it can cost you several inches
Sniper magazine, published in 2011, has an excellent article about cant which states 2.5 degrees of cant will shift the point of impact by 3 inches at 400 meters and by 7 inches at 600 meters.

How do you ensure the gun is level without a bubble or a electronic leveler internal to the scope? When you zeroed at 100, the first group was windage zero on the center BE. The second group was a smidge right. That suggests you weren't exactly gun-scope level on the 2nd group. A Level gun Becomes very important pushing past 400 yards.
You going to make it to some Quantified Performance matches? I’ll be flying out east for the March 2/3 Arena match and a few others. Definitely the most competitive gas gun series around.

That would be a perfect match to run speed drop. Probably have to dial under zero 1.6-1.7ish mils. Then just hold the distance in mils

I think the weight of your camera recorder also has slight impact on bullet trajectory

I shoot gas guns as much as I can. Bolt guns are fun and easy to shoot accurately but I just have more fun running ARs.
Did it seem whether or not, one particular caliber out-shined the rest? Or any that seemed to under perform?

What scope magnification are you using at 400 to 500 yrds?
I can’t recall specifically now but I typically shoot in the 12-15x range. Some of these stages I went all the way up to 18x though due to the small targets and how shot up they were.

Checking the comments as I do enjoy MMM’s content as well. I personally did shoot the 6max this weekend at the Tactical Sniper Series Finale. It is all it is cracked up to be. Video will be released along with the results tomorrow. 👍🏼
I’m aware of the 6max for sure but haven’t had a chance to get my hands on a barrel yet. Would for sure be interested in doing something with it in 2024 though as I’m getting a lot of comments about it. Stay tuned! Sounds like X-Ring will have a solid video on the caliber coming soon to hold us over!

This is riverbend gun club in Dawsonville…. They host a monthly precision rifle match on the first Sunday of each month.
Yes I’ve got a couple matches on the calendar right now. Steel city and brocks gap at the end of the month and then a prs match or 2 in wa in March/ April.
