This 100%. Even the "cheaper" bikes are great for 99% of the riders out there. The mountain bike community seems heavily focused on overpriced things most of them don't need.
Yeah. I agree to a certain degree… a bike with good brakes and suspension are worth having. Lighter weight is also very nice for a trail bike. I understand more gravity focused riding a heavy bike is fine but for trail riding a faster, better climbing bike is very nice.
I agree! I have an aluminum bike with a marzocchi fork and deore drivetrain/brakes. After riding it for a couple years I bought an expensive bike with carbon frame, wheels, cranks and handlebar with X01 drivetrain, code rsc brakes, and Fox factory suspension and dropper. The only truly noticeable difference is that the wheels always stay true. Otherwise it seems to be just expensive bragging rights.
I appreciate a true honest review of bikes like this! It sure helps people that are thinking on spending boo coo money on a bike to get a good quality parts and bike but knowing there are just as good bikes for cheaper money that still have quality parts! Thank you

Hey Jason. Great video..and a good reminder of how we should be wise stewards of the money we've been entrusted with. I have not heard anything about this. I can’t imagine they’re selling bikes that are consistently cracking. And for the record, I’ve seen cracked Ibis’s Yeti’s Specialized and other brands carbon bikes. It’s not entirely uncommon. Also, I’ve been riding Cannondale rode bikes for more than a decade without any issues. My current road bike has over 3000 miles on it.

Good question. The DW link on the Pivot is pretty incredible and the flip chip on the shock setting is very nice as well… if they cost the same with the same kit, I’d take the Pivot✌️

I would have to ride them back to back but I would say it feels more like the sb115 then the sb100 or the spur… I for sure prefer the Scalpel SE over the spur
Hello there. Great channel. Question for you: You mentioned that you spent around "$5,000" to get your Ripley's weight down to wear you wanted it - do you have a list of all the parts/accessories that you installed on it to get the weight down?
Quality control and quality standards equal safety and decrease chances of frame snapping into cracking etc.. This is something that most of zero RUclips videos address I can tell you from experience Hosp bills are hundreds of thousands of dollars so buying that pivot with the highest standards. quality control is what I want.
"9 ounces more". 9! 🤯 Pivot is more than double the price of the Scalpel SE for a half-a-pound savings. That's completely nuts. The Scalpel SE is DEFINITELY on my radar now (although I can't stand shiny red bikes)
I just got a 2022 S-works stumpy for $6500 brand new. Crazy sales going on right now, its a great time to take advantage ! U like that scalpel better than the S-works non EVO stumpy ?
Exactly, so many good deals out there right now!! Hum.... the SE is just different than the Stumpy. The stumpy feels longer and maybe not as snappy or quick. Although the it's very snappy and quick for a 130/140 bike and it would be difficult to get down to 25.5 lbs for under $4600. The SE is the better value in my experience but I really liked the Stumpy a lot. The rear end feels better on the SE too.
Great review and it's unreal to see a manufacturer making a bike that good at a price point we can all.afford. I am now seriously considering buying this bike but not from Salt as I live in the UK. 😂
Absolutely! Excellent xc/short travel trail bike. Particularly for those riding blue trails most of the time… quick bike that climbs well, feels efficient and nimble. Hard to beat this Scalpel SE for the money!
haha nothing wrong with that! I love mine! The SE is slightly more "Ripley" than the M4.... for sure the M4 feels more XC than the SE or Ripley... enjoy!!
Pivot has always made even Yeti and SC feel like bargains. I don't know what they think they have, but I'd buy two $5500 bikes 10/10 times over a single $11k MTB.
I have been looking at Pivot bikes. I'm short and they seem to have the lowest standover. Looking at the 2 bikes side by side the 25" standover on the 429 XS is at the seat post. The Scalpel has a longer area with the lowest standover. It's standover is 33" on their small. I measure 27" from ground to my crotch. Am I limited to Pivot? The angle of the top tube makes the standover measurement a little less meaningful. I'm trying to decide between 429 and Switchblade. Would the 429 handle a blue run at a bikepark? (angelfire NM) I would probably rent a bike if I wanted to try black. sounds like 429 would handle my local trails. Drop offs less than 2'. Plan to buy by next spring. Thanks. I know this is not what you do, but you must know some short people
Interesting. How tall are you? The Pivot T429 is great for blue trails as well as many black level trails. 👍 although if you are light weight you might prefer the Ibis Ripley.
My choice would be the switchblade, it can do anything you throw at it, even the XC trails, just throw on some skimpy light tires and now you’ve got a faster trail bike.
@@mtbyumyum well that’s good news. I have a nice set of Roval wheels and I like to have one set with chunky tires and one set with XC tires ready to go.
I wish I needed a bike because I would get that Scalpel today. Still riding my Ibis Mojo 3 and am very happy. Bought that after your review years ago...thanks!
I was really surprised by your comments and now I’m second-guessing everything. Lol How do you feel the scalpel will do against the DW link on more chunky trails like Jacob‘s ladder or Zen? Also, what bike will you ride True Grit on this year? I have a Trail429 Enduro (thanks to your recommendation) and this will be my first year riding True Grit…super excited about it.
Your T429 would be better down Jacobs and Zen but there’s a difference between your T429 and this Mach4… the Scalpel SE is better in chunk and higher speeds compared to the Mach4. Not sure what I’ll ride at True Grit. Most likely the M4🤘
Nothing will replace more travel, so you just comprise with a slightly rougher and more calculated ride. No need to second guess it, one persons perfect ride is not another’s.
This just goes to show how you have to be careful whose opinion you pay attention to online. I own both of these bikes - I had the Cannondale Scalpel SE first and thought it was a really fun, capable bike. Then I got the opportunity to purchase the new Mach4 and I jumped at the chance. Let me just say that MTB Yumyum is of course entitled to his own opinion. But from my experience he is absolutely INSANE to compare the Scalpel to the Mach4. The Scalpel is a really good bike. Emphasis on “good”. It is good. But the new Mach4 is a really GREAT bike. The Mach4 does everything better than the Scalpel SE. it is far more capable on technical terrain and downhill trails. All while climbing just a little better than the Scalpel. Again, everyone has their own opinion, so be careful whose advice you follow.
Thanks for weighing in as I'm sure there are not too many people with experience on both bikes commenting here. From reading your comment I think we're saying the same thing. I said the M4 was the better bike.... just not $7000 better! Perhaps the only difference in our experiences is descending. Without a doubt I'm faster over chop on the SE. Basically anything other than a flow trail the SE provides more stability and less twitchy. One of the commenters asked an excellent question, "if the two bikes were the same kit and same cost which one would I pick" easy, the Pivot! DW link feels better and the flip chip is next level... like owning two bikes! I also prefer the geo/bike fit better on the M4... I think I mentioned all this in the video. The problem/difference is the equivalent M4 kit is the pro xt/xtr build w/carbon wheels for $8,799 ($4,100 more than the SE)
I built a Carbonda FM909 this spring. Looks the spitting image of the Scalpel, less the fancy paint job. 66 degree hta. 77 degree sta. Just over $4,000 build. Sram X0 drive train. XT brakes. Race Face carbon cranks. Fox Kashima 120mm fork. 100mm rear travel. Nextie carbon rims on DT 240 hubs. . . . Just sayin.
@@mtbyumyum “hard pass” is that a bad thing? My old Ripley is 76 degree sta. so pretty similar geometry to Ripley. FM909 is trail bike geometry on a lightweight cross country style frame. I guess technically down country. Anyhow, Carbonda is a consumer direct Taiwanese frame. I built up one of their FM1002 enduro bikes a couple of years ago that worked out pretty good for me. I understand It is probably not so good to talk about consumer direct alternatives for mtb. But us poor working stiffs have to do what we can to afford a bike.
How does Pivot even sell bikes when they're so overpriced? Group set = I prefer Shimano XT over ANY drive train. I have over 5300 miles on my Ripmo V2 with one cassette swap, one derailleur (thanks to a rock) and I'm waiting for my new oval chain ring any day now. How did I maintain the drive train you might ask?? Easy, I've rotated 6 hot waxed chains and tossed them out and replaced them when needed. Really like both of these bikes though. Honestly I'm glad bike companies are coming back to earth on their pricing after the "pandemic sales".
Wow, you've really collected the miles on that Ripmo. Interestingly enough, my xtr shifter gave up before the derailleur... in any case, you're exactly right! XT is a total work horse and bike prices are bananas. Thanks for weighing in!
@mtbyumyum my wife has the Ripley af. That's a winner, too. I actually think that would be quite an interesting video to follow from the value thread, especially at a time when cash flow could be challenging for people
haha nice try Brit... who ever won could have done it on this SE... comes down to fitness at this level and age... pro rides okay, maybe gear helps but not likely at True Grit in this cat
These days what you are getting is,... dare I say it? Gouged. I have expensive bikes and while I enjoy them I feel guilty when I see others enjoying a vintage Stump Jumper, for example. This trend extends to many other products as well, just as if these companies expect not to survive for very long. Get the money and run. When will it end? Maybe we need to put our collective foot down. Maybe some outfits will sell all the parts separately encouraging you to build your own. That should save some. Anyway just my opinion.
Yo... 4k or 11k can't see spending that much on a bike. This is unrealistic for 90% of people. I want something good enough under $800 which is still a lot.
Great video but you couldn't pay me to ride a crack'nfail. They have burned a lot of customers similar to Ellworthless. Riding Experience doesn't equal warranty experience.
@flyboysnugs thank you! I don’t think most people realize how much work this channel is… if a brand or business I trust offers me a paid video idea, I’ve got to take it! That said, I turn down dozens of offers monthly for brand or product deals I wouldn’t care to show to this yumyum community.

Great review and it's unreal to see a manufacturer making a bike that good at a price point we can all.afford.
I am now seriously considering buying this bike but not from Salt as I live in the UK. 😂
Completely agree... quality bike at an affordable price! Thanks!
What do you mean we?
Here in Mx that same Cannondale model is about 150 usd cheaper than the base Mach 4 SL… for that price difference I don’t know which one I would pick.
So the Scalpel would work as a starter xc race bike? Good video.
Absolutely! Excellent xc/short travel trail bike. Particularly for those riding blue trails most of the time… quick bike that climbs well, feels efficient and nimble. Hard to beat this Scalpel SE for the money!
Better than the Rocky Mountain Element? I’ve been looking at that one for my next bike and I know you used to own one and loved it.
It's just different than the Element... the Element felt a lot longer and more "trail bike" than this Scalpel SE
Yes!!
Dang it! Just ordered the pivot! 😅
haha nothing wrong with that! I love mine! The SE is slightly more "Ripley" than the M4.... for sure the M4 feels more XC than the SE or Ripley... enjoy!!
@mtbyumyum thanks for soothing my confirmational bias!
hahahaha you're welcome lol srly tho, if you got the money, you made the right choice!
Pivot has always made even Yeti and SC feel like bargains. I don't know what they think they have, but I'd buy two $5500 bikes 10/10 times over a single $11k MTB.
💯💪
The Switchblade can feel really harsh for lighter weight riders.... my $.02
@@mtbyumyum put on a coil shock with lighter weight spring then, should help
5'2"@@mtbyumyum
10:30 the funny rear hub dish is almost a deal breaker. Why Cannondale… just why?
Yeah, sort of annoying but these carbon wheels are very good... not harsh. So no need for me to ever swap them out.
Nice. My wife is on a Mojo 4 and loving it. She rides around on my demo bikes but still loving the Mojo!
Could you realistically get $6,000 for the $12,000 pivot used right now? That's what concerns me the most about buying any bikes over $6500.
Great question. Not sure what the depreciation is on a bike that expensive… I would think it would go for more than that tho…
Who buys bikes thinking they can get there money back, the worst and the best investment ever! Can’t put a price on fun and exercise!
I was really surprised by your comments and now I’m second-guessing everything. Lol
How do you feel the scalpel will do against the DW link on more chunky trails like Jacob‘s ladder or Zen?
Then why did you buy it?
The difference between the 4k bike and an 11k bike is the guy on the bike and the depth of his wallet. 😂
Maybe... but there isn't $7,000 of difference in my experience.
I built a Carbonda FM909 this spring. Looks the spitting image of the Scalpel, less the fancy paint job. 66 degree hta. 77 degree sta. Just over $4,000 build. Sram X0 drive train. XT brakes. Race Face carbon cranks. Fox Kashima 120mm fork. 100mm rear travel. Nextie carbon rims on DT 240 hubs. . . . Just sayin.
77 degree sta on a xc bike… hard pass
@@mtbyumyum “hard pass” is that a bad thing? My old Ripley is 76 degree sta. so pretty similar geometry to Ripley. FM909 is trail bike geometry on a lightweight cross country style frame. I guess technically down country. Anyhow, Carbonda is a consumer direct Taiwanese frame. I built up one of their FM1002 enduro bikes a couple of years ago that worked out pretty good for me. I understand It is probably not so good to talk about consumer direct alternatives for mtb. But us poor working stiffs have to do what we can to afford a bike.
Cannondale 😊
How has this guy discovered dimished returns this late in life...
I've owned 2 Pivots (Mach 6 and Mach 5.5) and while they are incredible bikes, the 429 does not justify $11K. You can get a Shuttle for less.
Kids words cut deep 😂
😆🤣
I was blown away by my Ripmo AF... I had to ask myself if the return on investment exists for carbon after riding it.
Still never ridden that bike but everyone I hear from really like it!
@mtbyumyum my wife has the Ripley af. That's a winner, too. I actually think that would be quite an interesting video to follow from the value thread, especially at a time when cash flow could be challenging for people
Isn't cannondale going bankrupt? maybe that's why they are on sale?? Bike prices are insane, hope things change soon.
So how much did the guy who finished first pay for his bike? 😂
no clue... this was in the 40-49 yr old expert category
Guaranteed he was on a s works epic evo like every other winner 😂😂😉😉
haha nice try Brit... who ever won could have done it on this SE... comes down to fitness at this level and age... pro rides okay, maybe gear helps but not likely at True Grit in this cat
@@mtbyumyum totally. The winner could’ve easily been on a 28 pound trail bike honestly! Just have to push your buttons a little 😂
I was joking. I’m sure it was a nice bike, but value is such a personal thing at the end of the day. The very top end is generally not worth it to me.
An 11K MTB should not come with a pressfit BB.
Wow beautiful ride
Thank you!!
Yo... 4k or 11k can't see spending that much on a bike. This is unrealistic for 90% of people. I want something good enough under $800 which is still a lot.
Wow, I have no clue what you could get under $1,000...
Great video but you couldn't pay me to ride a crack'nfail. They have burned a lot of customers similar to Ellworthless. Riding Experience doesn't equal warranty experience.
Bikes depreciate terribly.

@flyboysnugs thank you! I don’t think most people realize how much work this channel is… if a brand or business I trust offers me a paid video idea, I’ve got to take it! That said, I turn down dozens of offers monthly for brand or product deals I wouldn’t care to show to this yumyum community.

I know bikes are great these days but I think you kinda gush over bikes too much. Every bike is capable, fun, fast. A little more critique would be nice.
What is there to complain about on this bike? Seriously?

I really don't get your comment.....
@@mtbyumyum 160 f/r rotors are a bad spec choice for the more trail version, along with undergunned tires. Only one water bottle mount, Pivots always have rattly cables in my experience,
I love the tires on both these bikes... Yeah, maybe the Rekon would have been a better tire but still, these tires are excellent for a short travel trail bike. I personally run 180 rotors on my big bikes (sb140, Firebird, Ripmo) so 160 is plenty... I've had no issues stopping on these two bikes. Sounds like it might be time for you to start a RUclips channel of your own...
@@mtbyumyum alright, guess you Believe your reviews are infallible. No respectful critique wanted here. Have a good one 👍🏻
Dude, I seriously do the least amount possible to upload these videos... of course I don't think they're "infallible" lol come on man... this is a hobby for me bro... I'm just a normal dad, probably like you, who has a full time job, family and many other obligations and I have to log in and read your ridiculous comment complaining about my video reviews. Why bother commenting? Just don't watch them if you like more critical view point on current bikes. To be fair, your critique was the rotors and tires and 1 water bottle mount.... give me a break dude... those can be addressed for very little money should you want a change. I try to speak to the way the bike rides. And I didn't mention the Pivot cable rattle because there hasn't been any. I rode a Pivot Firebird all last season, no cable noise and the Mach 4 SL the past 4 months without cable noise issue... Go watch my Ibis Ripley video.... my favorite bike of all time and I MENTIONED THE ANNOYING CABLE RATTLES on the Ripley....
I have the Orbea Rise M10 with Fox factory suspension and XT brakes RF aluminium wheels it cost me £4000 reduced from £6999 !! Imo it’s an absolute bargain, personally I wouldn’t pay over £5000 for any bike or Ebike because a 5 K bike is all you need. That’s my opinion though 😊
You’re not wrong! $5k will get you an excellent bike🤘
@@mtbyumyum 💯 bro 😎 I’d like to see what Tyler thinks about the CANNONDALE , after all didn’t he say “ as long as it’s got a dropper post it’s all good “ haha 😂
Orbeas are amazing. Only bad thing is they are a bit on a smaller side. I'm 5"11 and I ride xl. Albeit with a shorter stem. But maybe it's just me. I also have an xl santa cruz. As L was too short imo.
