What a beautiful piece. That red has brought out more of the grain and really makes the various knots stand out and a very slight golden colour to the whole piece makes it a truly wonderful addition mate. Great work.
Hi Angus. Thank you. Good to be back. I'm filming as much as I can at the moment which isn't as much as it used to be, but more than recently...if that makes sense!
Hi Anthony. Many thanks for your kind words. Def didn't fall off the edge of the earth, but felt like it with frustration of not being able to turn much. :-)
Great to see you back Martin. I don't care if people like it or not as I think you said you were a little happy with it. In fact I think the colour worked well, I bet it looks even better in the hand. Oh, didn't know we had turning seasons.
Hi Paul. Thanks for watching. Pleased you like it. The 'seasons' thing is more of a business observation. The summer months are quieter for sales when folk are on holiday, in their gardens and generally more away from their shops. Autumn, Winter and Spring are the busiest and most common months for turning...so coming into the Autumn for business at least, is the start of the new season!
Welcome back Martin ... and what a comeback piece to kick off your new season with. Absolutely stunning mate, you've once again proven that with skill and a good eye, subtle colour really can enhance an already beautiful piece of wood even more. Great video. Cheers Mike
Presumably the vacuum chuck limits the speed at which you turn the inside? Is it just a personal preference to not cut a foot off the bottom with the vacuum chuck? Ta.
Thanks for asking. As this piece was on a recess, there was no need to remove it. It's small enough not to be overly noticeable. If the piece had been about half an inch thicker, I would have used a tenon and removed it for a completely flat bottom.
I didn'trealise there is a Woodturning Season! You said it starts 1st September but when does it run to? Great to see you turning again. Do you get"rusty" when not turning? I am aquilters & we lose muscle memory when we do not practise everyday for at least 1 hour.
Hi Dawn. It's not really a 'season' in the traditional sense. It's more of a business thing when hobby turners tend to get back into the workshops after the summer of mowing the lawn and gardening! Trade quietens down a bit between the end of June and start of September. Myself though, I've done very little of my own turning this summer. It's mostly been demonstrations and a little teaching.
Great to see you back. What a lovely piece and such beautiful figuring in the wood. Yes I really enjoyed your demo and meeting you. Hope to see you at Makers Central next year. Thank you for the kind words about my work.
Obviously you chose the wood well, the knot is "knot" something to be missed on this piece that's for sure. As with the rest of the viewers - it is great to see you back and also on top form. It is slightly annoying when you make it look so easy - but we all aspire and you do inspire. Having spent some time learning with Les down the road (when he has not been fishing), and made use of his vacuum chuck I am particularly drawn to it, but I am battling with whether I 'want it' or whether I 'need it'. I guess with retirement coming up and more time to spend in front of the lathe the 'need' may become more apparent. Keep up the good work, and the videos. See you on Friday at Yandles - with your new bench.
Enjoyed that Martin, Thanks. Really looking forward to many more to come. You give inspiration to many turners, myself included. Don't overstretch yourself though, that's the last thing we want. As and when you feel able, without interfering with your other commitments. Could you tell me where you get the discs you put in the bottom made, it adds a great finishing touch. Rob
Hi Bonnie. I don't think it is worth shipping the oil over to the US. I'm thinking about it and will be talking to the retailers over there to see if they think it is worth it.
Hi Michael. Thanks for watching. I put the link to the coin company in another comment with a description of what they are. They are a special order though.
HI Mike. Thanks for watching. It is good to be back, and it will be good to get to Yandles this weekend, too! See you there - I'm in the Mill this time round.
I was wondering if you have any spare or old turning tools you don’t want anymore because where I am from I can’t purchase or get many tools so I was wondering if I could have them and take them from you so you don’t have to throw them away
Great to see you back on you tube Martin, I've missed your videos. I wish I had 1. The confidence and 2. The equipment to attempt a bigger project like this. It's a beautiful piece and I look forward to seeing more from you this season. Always inspiring vids. It was great to catch up with you again at UKIWS again this year and It gave me a huge nudge..... and I''ve decided to have a go at posting some of my own videos?! I would be honoured if you would check out my channel when you have time and let me know what you think. Looking forward to seeing you all at UKIWS next year, give me a shout if you need a tea/ coffe lady/ volunteer. Always happy to help and get involved. All the best. Kristi.
Hi Kristi. Thanks for the comment, and great to hear from you. Good to meet you at UKIWS, too. The one piece of advice I would give you about larger pieces is....Go for it! There are a couple of provisos though - If you can turn a medium size piece, you can do a big one - the technique is nigh on identical, and the other is turn at a slower speed....oh, and always wear a face shield and stand away from the line of fire....but most of all Go For It! If you don't try, you'll never know. You don't have to turn it one go. Do a bit, leave it for a short time and go back to it. I guess this piece, had I not been filming it would have taken about a hour, if that to complete. There's no need to rush. Take all day over it if you need to. Enjoy it.
@@msabansmith Great advice Martin. I'll let you know how i get on..... If I'm brave enough I might even post a video on it?!........ I look forward to more inspiring videos from your good self. Cheers. Kristi
Oh dear Martin, what an anti-climax. I'm afraid it's beginning to look as though your best work is behind you. Having waited all this time i thought we'd be treated to a spectacular. I know the paints and various gloop products are important to the business but frankly you've set a high bar on the instructional vid front and we're all looking for more of the same.
Oh dear Nigel. Very sorry you're disappointed in this one. I don't always do, and don't always want to do 'spectacular' pieces and commit them to video. My bar is high, and I certainly don't have to out-do myself on every demonstration video I produce, either.
What a beautiful piece. That red has brought out more of the grain and really makes the various knots stand out and a very slight golden colour to the whole piece makes it a truly wonderful addition mate. Great work.
Hi Ian. Many thanks for watching and you kind words. A little attention to detail and thinking ahead goes a long way.
I got all warm and fuzzy watching that, just like the good old days of watching you transform blanks to masterpieces.
Awwww, bless. Thanks, Greg. Great to hear from you. So many ideas still, and so little time!
Good to have you back. Have missed your demos.
I Terrence. Thanks for watching. Sorry I've been away - busy with the business! Good to be back a little more often now.
Beautiful piece
Thanks, Chris.
Good to see you back turning. Love this piece, simple colouring has enhanced the natural wood. Thanks for posting.
Cheers, Hoppers.
It s nice to see you turn :)
Thanks for watching, Noah.
Love the piece and the added color. Quite nice...
Thanks, Jerry. I find that virtually every piece can benefit from a bit of embellishment.
Love the effect of a little colour. Good to see you back
Thanks for watching, Andy.
Nice to see you back. 👍
Hi Angus. Thank you. Good to be back. I'm filming as much as I can at the moment which isn't as much as it used to be, but more than recently...if that makes sense!
Welcome back Martin...nice chunk of wood to start and lovely piece to finish. Anxiously waiting to see what you have coming for us in the near future.
Hi Randy. Thank you. It is a fair size piece of cedar. It smelled fantastic. I think the aromatic oils will stop me catching a cold for months.
Good going lad it looks deadly 👍🏻
Thanks, Steve!
So very pleased to see you again Martin. What a great bowl. The suttle hint of colour brought the whole bowl to life..
Enjoyed the video
Thanks, Russell.
Looks absolutely stunning, brilliant job
Cheers, Andy. Good to hear from you.
Always enjoy your videos. Good to have you back.
Thanks, Dan.
Good to see you back Martin I thought you fell off of the edge of the earth, Beautiful Bowl. I have your Hampshire sheen Great stuff.
Hi Anthony. Many thanks for your kind words. Def didn't fall off the edge of the earth, but felt like it with frustration of not being able to turn much. :-)

Very nice Martin!!! I would watch you turn a toothpick, nice to see you back turning
Thanks, Carl. I might do a tooth pick in a quick video one day!
Final look was, in my opinion, superb, would I add a sheen? dont know but uut looks great as it is
Quite nice 👍
Thanks, Jackie. Quite nice of you to say so. ;-)

Love the subtle color. Welcome back Sir!
Thank you! Good to be back...and thanks for watching.
really nice it reminds me of the red centre of australia well done. may I ask what lathe that is ? thanks
Thanks, Gee. This lathe is an Axminster 2030 Trade Lathe. A bit of a beast, and handles most things exceptionall well.
good come back bowl/dish see you on friday at yandles
Thanks, Harvey. It was good to see you at Yandles.
Hi Martin
Another great video
Can you tell me where you get your makers coins made please?
Michael
Proper job! Welcome back to the office, as it were! 😁
Nice to see you back behind the lathe, Martin. :-)
Welcome back mate. It’s been a while and we missed you 👍🏻
Thanks, Justin.

Is it the Holdfast vacuum system that you use? I've been eyeing it up for a while, but haven't taken the plunge. Worth the price?
welcome back absolutely stunning sir
Great work. Thanks. Would prefer tool sounds and no music, though. Sounds of work are enough, in my opinion.
Martin, great to have you back. What vacuum chuck system are you using?
Great piece..please provide dye color and maker. TIA
Hi Wood Turner. The dye is from the Intrinsic Colour Collection. I am the maker of the dye. You can find stockists at www.hampshiresheen.com/buy
Forgot to say that the colour was 'Earth'.
Great to see you back again Martin! Yet again, another lovely piece. Were you coins a reasonable price?

Like Quilting we start xmas quilts in April/May. After xmas very few quilts are made just finishing a few jobs.
Great to see you back. What a lovely piece and such beautiful figuring in the wood.

A beautiful piece Martin. Is your Danish Oil available to order in the U.S.?
Hi Bonnie. I don't think it is worth shipping the oil over to the US. I'm thinking about it and will be talking to the retailers over there to see if they think it is worth it.
Hi Martin
Good to see you back at the lathe, can I ask where you got your coins made? I can’t seem to find a supplier
Michael
Hi Michael. Thanks for watching. I put the link to the coin company in another comment with a description of what they are. They are a special order though.
Would have been nice without the music. I like the cutting sounds. Thanks and take care, Larry
Thanks, Larry. I'll see if I can keep more cutting sounds in. They don't sound very good when played at 8x the their normal speed though.
Hi Martin great to see you back ,great video love the bowl. Are you going to be at yandles this weekend ?
Mike
HI Mike. Thanks for watching. It is good to be back, and it will be good to get to Yandles this weekend, too! See you there - I'm in the Mill this time round.
i think he is there both days
I was wondering if you have any spare or old turning tools you don’t want anymore because where I am from I can’t purchase or get many tools so I was wondering if I could have them and take them from you so you don’t have to throw them away
Thanks for asking Levi. I keep a relatively small tool rack compared to others and most of the time use the tools till there's nothing left. Sorry.
