- Kobo is gearing up to release the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour e-readers using Kaleido 3 colour e-paper technology. Fnac, the largest retailer in France, released the product page earlier today, and Chapters Indigo also had a product listing before they were both taken down a couple of hours later.

I upgraded from the Clara HD to the Kobo Sage yesterday before this announcement came out... The Libra just felt a little too small for my taste (and bad eyes lol) and the Elipsa was too blurry for me (already spoiled with 300 ppi). I won't be returning my Sage for the Libra Color but I'm curious to see the display once it comes out. I'm a little concerned about it looking dull and the latency of the pen. I mostly read books and black & white manga. I do read some comics and art books from time to time but I would rather get a physical copy or read them on my iPad to see the full color scheme. I find the 7,8/8 inch color e-readers a little too expensive for what they have to offer me right now. Once Kobo will release a color Sage, I feel like the price tag will be above what I'm willing to pay for an e-reader right now. But it's nice to see bigger companies checking out 'new markets'. I'm interested in how this tech will improve in the future.
It's nice to see that Kobo has been working hard on developing new e-readers, unlike Amazon.
Agreed!
love your profile pic
It's a shame Rakuten products aren't available in every country like Amazon is. Except synchronization Kobo is superior to kindle in each feature
Personally, I will be sticking with my black-and-white Kobo, because I don't really have a use for a color e-reader. I love the contrast of the black-and-white screen, and I would hate to lose that amazing contrast just to get muted colors.
One of the downsides of K3 is they mix colours to get B&W content, which is why, with colour screens, the background is not a true grey, like you would find in pure B&W e-readers
Not a bad take mate! For someone like me this is very appealing because I love highlighting, and I need at least two different colors for a positive and negative highlight.
Also there's a beauty to illustrations on a high contrast B&W eink screen. You'd think publishing houses would do stuff specifically designed to take advantage of that, but they don't even get text formatting for ereaders right. What we really need imo: snappier operating systems and replaceable batteries (and page turner buttons, after getting used to them there's no going back)
I have a year old Libra 2 so I probably won't upgrade. Also, I don't read comics and graphic novels. However, it would be good for book covers and in book illustrations. I'll wait to see what the display looks like. Who knows? I may change my mind very quickly.
Yes, I am very excited. Every time I see the black and white book cover there’s a second of hesitation where I don’t feel like using my kindle. Color is 1000% influential for me
Thanks for posting! Excited for the Libra Color. Libra 2 is the best all-around e-reader on the market right now in my opinion.
You are so welcome
I’m more interested in the new Libra for its replaceable components than the colour function. The battery of my 4 year old Clara 2E is starting to get a bit wonky and I wish I had the ability to easily replace it
Gallery 4 will hopefully be a game changer if it is more accurate and faster. Kaleido is a dead end and will be obsolete, soon. For now stick to greyscale until color eink matures more.
This is excellent news. I've had a Kobo Glo since 2015, and I'm thinking of replacing it with a newer one (the battery already discharges fast). I will wait for the release of these new devices. Kobo is great, it has never let me down in my travels and nightly readings.
I just ordered a libra 2 for £150. Should I cancel and get the color instead for £200? Mostly black and white books but have some colour pdfs which will be nice to see in this. Not sure if the pdfs are good in the 7in screen though!
I would cancel and get a color! It’s nice to see book covers in their original color and also highlight/annotate with different colors.
I'm curious. I have been using kobo ereaders since 2014, i think. My first kobo was the kobo Aura, Which is actually still working. Now im using a kobo libta first versiob and i love it, even if my favourite model is the kobo sage (awesome but too expensive). Let's see gow these new nodels will be, even if i don't think i will change my Libra just now.
I also have the kobo aura one and it still works great! Battery doesn’t last weeks anymore but I can still read my books without any problems👌🏻✨
Does kobo have a trade-in program like amazon? Because I have a 2 yr old libra 2
I was hoping that the new Kobo Libra would just be an improved version of the Libra 2, perhaps lighter, faster, and with more storage. I will wait and see some of the reviews. The ability to use a Kobo stylus looks appealing though.
I have a Kobo Aura one, think it’s like seven years old😅. As someone who just reads and doesn’t need the note taking function, is it worth the upgrade or do you think more black and white readers are coming?
Im so exited for the libra color, looks gorgeous. And the fact that have pencil support is amazing, because kobo allows to annotate at the margins. The filtered photos are promising. Good video!
Look, I have no real use for colour. But you bet I’m getting one of these haha. My current Kobo is almost 10 years old and I’ve been considering getting the Libra 2 for ages but since my 10 year old Kobo still works fine I couldn’t justify it. The colour upgrade has sealed the deal for me. Birthday present this year? YES!
Besides the color any other difference between libra 2 and libra color? Looking for my first eReader and funny care much about color.
I head the Libra 2 Color and Clara Color will have Carta 1300 panels.
Ordered it - the attraction for me is the note taking and annotation in color rather than the actual color on pages since I don't do graphic novels.
I have a 6-7 years old kobo ereader. I will upgrade once these come out
RIP Kindle lol - from a Kindle fan for over a decade owning both the latest Paperwhite Signature and Scribe. I've just converted to Boox Note Air 3C as my everyday device, and probably Kobo color for e-reader. Amazon is way to restricted and lazy at innovations!
Yes.
I would love my book cover in color when my KOBO is off as a screensaver.
But while I read, I would stay black and white :)
Interested in a colour e-reader, but don't want extras like note taking, just the abiliry to read. If they're going to support audiobooks, a current wifi/bluetooth chip is important, and if they're going to seal it and make it water resistant, larger internal storage is almost a must. 16 gigs? If I load up on ebooks and audiobooks, that goes fast.
All else being equal I think anyone would prefer color over monochrome. But of course there's always a price premium for color in the current e-reader market. Currently I think the price premium is not worth it, but I'm hoping that eventually all ebook displays have good enough color at a cheap enough price that the whole question becomes irrelevant, as it is on other electronic gadgets such as laptops and phones.
I think this is really interesting. I love the wink screen to read but the highlighting potential as well as colour for cover did hooks etc is really interesting. I think what stands out is the planner functionality as a more affordable price than say the Elipsa. I’ve wanted to trt some but don’t have an iPad and my phone is too small. I’ll be curious to see if passion planner is compatible.
It will be great if you compare these new color e-readers in the future on this channel, including Pocketbook Era Color
I'm upgrading from my H20. In my case for color, I read the odd textbook with diagrams and sometimes it being in black and white makes it pain in the bum because some images can be hard to make out in black and white or the text makes references to specific colors.
Sure I could read them on a tablet but sometimes a tablet is too big to place somewhere and look at for reference.
Plus the other bonuses like the extra storage, bluetooth, and pen usage I can keep it in my pocket more for note taking (my family loves stealing notepads for shopping lists) and audiobooks would be nice to try out.
I'm hoping the CPU upgrade will make PDF reading better overall because its kinda laggy even on a modded Kobo H20 (Not wanting to get too ahead of myself there. Lol)
Kobo clara color? We use color for PDF, comics/mangas, the clara is too small for that use. I would be more interested in kobo sage color
Exactly!
I was not planning to upgrade to color because I was hearing that it was only 150 ppi, but on further research it's the color part that's 150 ppi the black & white is still 300 ppi. I pre-ordered one today because I like the idea of the color book covers and illustrations. I'll gift my current Clara 2e to my daughter.
Also why can’t we get the back covers of paperbacks in our e-books as well as the front?
Especially with mangas, some of them have cute little pictures on the back that you’d be unable to see unless you had a hardcopy🥲
Never had a Kobo, as I’ve always had a Kindle. I’m very interested though and need to look at reviews on Kobo. Thanks
I have both an (old) kindle paperwhite and a kobo sage. The 8" screen is just divine
Thanks for the Video!
5k colours screen is not like watching a tablet. But hey, I'm happy as long as manufacturers keep trying to improve eInk screens and the public likes them.
The very VERY nice thing about the new Libra Colour is being able to scribe it, that's a huge improvement (although we will see the lag and the pros and cons) for $200. Boox tablets (yes, they are android and you can install whatever you wish) but at the end of the day, it's an eInk tablet and, at least myself, only use it for note taking, not even reading (I have kobo libra 1) because it is too heavy to hold it for long periods of time, and the price tag is around $500.
So yes, it is a huge step forward and the race to offer better eInk products is getting so interesting!
Am surprised you guys dont have the unboxing or review of these devices yet. Keen!
Yeah, they never sent them yet
@@goodereader any idea when? And aside from the standard kobo experience can you please share abit more about the web experience? Keen to use to read news online such as rss feed (Inoreader), tech meme, NYTimes. Pocketbook can’t really load articles behind paywall :(
What I really want this year is a few more options with Carta 1300
The Clara Colour and Libra Colour will have Carta 1300 panels. The new Clara B&W will have an older 1200 though.
I have been waiting for this. I read everything from Libby so the colour Libra will be awesome to read the coloured graphic novels
I’m still hoping someone will put out an affordable 12” colour ereader that I could use for reading technical manuals and reference books that have numerous colour illustrations. I also have a huge backlog of graphic novels I want to read.
I could definitely wait for further development on this technology. I use a Libra 2, which replaced the Kobo Aura H2O I smashed in 2022. Haha. I read mostly fiction and nonfiction with minimum color content.
I'm intrigued, curious to see how Amazon responds, I have too many books in the kindle ecosystem to switch at this point in time but I keen to check one out for sure.
Have over 500 books. Switched to Kobo.
@decidocisum but not all purchased in the Amazon Kindle store though. The send-to-Kindle service is very convenient.
Amazon is convenient and so is buying from the main device vendor. I just think Amazon doesn’t care much about ereaders anymore and I don’t want to give them so much money. 😅 I buy from several sources and use Calibre to manage my device. There are definitely features you give up such as cross-device syncing.
@decidocisum personally I don't think Amazon will bother with colour e-ink no need to, but they're just about to get rid of the Oasis so they have room for a new premium ereader, but I will end up with a Kobo at some point in time, just need to settle on which one Clara or a Libra most likely unless the colour Kobo stands out in reviews.
Cool!
they should have gone with Galery 3 or waited for Kaleido to get better. Sure Gallery is slower but so much better from what i saw, imo. Don't know if or how much more expensive it would make the thing, but since Kobo is not really to navigate, so speed and refresh rate is not an issue.
We’ll see what Sharp can do with Gallery 3…
@@Football10.youtube i will probably either go with Kobo sage/libra2 or Sharp, depending how the interface look like. I tried a Boox, and the interfaces was really not to my liking. Plus the value display was pretty bad on Kaleido 3 imo.
But I wonder if it is a Kaleido thing or a Boox thing
What about other features like auto adjust light or dark menu options in dark mode ... Nice video only one with this topic as of now ... Cant wait for a full review ... I bought a case for Libra 2 and am holding back until a review of the Libra 2 color to make my mind ... Kobo Libra 2 will go down in price for sure if Color will retail for 189 usd ...
The Libra 2 colour apparently has auto adjust blue light reducing light plus dark mode option
@@kahri8488 thanks bro ... I'll wait for it for sure ... Price point is really good ... Appreciate it
more participants in the colour e ink side will make colour eink readers more affordable
I have been exited and waiting the new kobo. The moment I hear it’s color version, I am like so disappointed. They should upgrade to Carta 1300 version of Libra 2 and Sage. The color technology isnt great
I'm waiting for a color E reader that is affordable and that ships to Mexico
Literally got my libra 2 in like 4 days ago...so thats cool.
Me too. I might exercise self-control and ignore it
@@unclethathurts NO CONTROL, be OUT of control!
There goes the good reading contrast out the window...
I hope they make a color Sage with a lot better battery next. The larger size would be so nice in color, but only if they five ut a decent battery this time. I did go ahead and pre-order the Libra color though, I love my libra 2 and my Sage, just not the sage's battery life. I've been wanting a color eink device since I first found out it was being developed years ago.
i think i will continue to stay with my kobo libra H2O😊
SO EXCITED for the future of eink readers 😮
I wish Kindle would be faster to release their color ereaders 😢
Just put a hold on buying a Libra, but the price can't be right. I'm in Britain and a quick conversion check would have it £20 pounds less than the discounted price now. £169 to the colour £149. Something is wrong there. But I will check in for the update. I am just a book reader so colour highlighting means nothing to me, but having colour photos from biographies or anything else in a book, even if it's muted, would be better than sticking to black and white. and just opening your library will just look better. I read in an article or saw on another video " Who would go back to black and white photos in a newspaper after we got colour ones?" In Britain I would like to thank the Today newspaper for that innovation.
I have the H2O, Libra2, Elipsa 2E(all fully working devices)…i just ordered Libra color too😂😊!Im sure that im going to love it.
Same. I have Libra 2 and Clara 2E. Both working great. About a year old. But I jumped on the color e-ink versions and preordered them.
I want the colour e-reader but I dont like the 150PPI for colour content. I read comics on my ipad and I would like to be able to read comics on my e reader with some colour. I understand it wont be as vibrant as an ipad but its better than black and white. I grew up with very poor print quality of real comic books - it might be nostalgic to read comics with e-ink. if they can improve the colour e-ink to be higher PPI and better vibrancy I would pay a premium for this.
So excited! 🎉
🎉
I dont find it useful if its not easy to upgrade the storage.
I got a Libra 2 just the other day… woops. Probably should have waited.
40 days with half an hour a day? Total 20h use? Meh, my libra h20 does 50-60hours... C'mon...
The e reader world is slow to upgrade, but kobo is going backwards since the libra 2
No prizes In guessing what new features the next kindles will have 🤭🙄
prefer they released sage2 with fixed power management instead
Give me a kobo sage with color and a better battery and then we'll be talking
$189 US and $249 CA? Huh. Looks like we're getting a deal - the exchange rate puts us at $255. :P (man, our Dollar is crap these days; I miss the days when we were almost at par...)
edit: And 40 days at **half an hour a day**? Who reads so little that would spend this kind of money on an ereader? Yeesh.
What I wan is new kindle oasis or whatever new kindle products 😢😢
Amazon is working on a colour paperwhite and Scribe, due out in 2025.
@@goodereader And is it true that it would be Acep technology?
That is that the report said, but I think they will use Kaleido 3, ACEP is based on Gallery 3, which does display more colours, but has a ton of latency issues,
@@goodereader thanks
FNAC is pronounced how it’s written. Not “FUNAC” 😅
Alright cool thanks
@@goodereader You’re welcome 😊
Honestly I wouldn't buy it...color screen looks too much dark...better black and white.
I'm not a Kobo user but color eink is completely uninteresting to me. I only use my ereader for manga but just the look of color eink, no matter which one, all just looks bad to me. Plus, they add at least $100 to the price (along with writing support), it's just too much to spend.
I know Kobo, Amazon, and B&N tend to have their ereaders on the cheaper side because they can do that so it will be cheaper than most but I'll just stick to b&w.
You have been subscribed to our RUclips channel for 4 years! Thanks so much for your support!
Kobo is usually overpriced
First /j
I am so glad more colour einks are getting released but I wish they would skip e ink kaleido 3 & jump to vastly better Gallery 3 but I guess it's about price!
