I have a Kobo Libra 2 and a Kindle Basic. The Kindle mostly gathers dust while my Kobo gets used every day.In fact, the only reason I got the Kindle was to get some books that were not available on the Kobo store (there are not that many). For me, the Kobo is more user friendly and technically superior to the Kindle in almost every way. Booktube seems to give the impression that Kindle is the only ereader available so it is nice to see the Kobo highlighted.
Yeah, the technical aspects to the Kobo are really great. And I love how customizable everything about the Kobo is.
Bought a Kobo 7 years ago. Still super happy with it. Battery is still everlasting. I can never imagine willingly reading a physical book ever again.

See, this is all cool but few things I prioritise first. Size - I like my paperwhite to fit in my pocket and to be small and easy to fit anywhere and also light. Secondly, I really love the battery life on paperwhite, I read a lot and only charge it once every three weeks. Third, I don't usually take notes when I read, so that is not a big feature. And fourth is the price. And also the conversion you'd have to do. So when I add all this up it is just not worth it. I will reconsider when we are into coloured ink technology and there are more options for coloured ones since I'd love to read manga and graphic novel on my reader in colour

Nearly all of my books are PDFs and in A4 size, so anything less than a 13.3 inch screen is just too small to use. The Fujitsu Quaderno 2 and Onyx BOOX Tab X are particularly excellent, though are starting to age. I am hopeful there will be more 13.3 inch choices this year. (Maybe even with color, though it is not mandatory.) A faster CPUs would be appreciated because turning pages in large PDFs are often quite slow.
I think it’s funny that this kobo when it changes pages flashes black, and then to the new page. Yet, a 2013, Sony PRS. T3 was able to switch Pages without flashing black. The only thing that actually changed was the lettering. How is it that these devices 11 years later cannot do the same thing? It was so much more elegant compared to almost every e-reader I’ve seen today.
I wish there was a way to have an ink-screen also play me the audiobook of the what im reading.. a seamless transition between reading and audiobooks. All of it away from a digital screen. Maybe thats asking for too much, but I hope for a day it comes true!

I have an older version of Kibo Libra and I love it! I still prefer reading physical books but there are advantages of an e-reader.
That's really cool. A year ago my Kindle Oasis died within warranty. I got the cash back and bought Paperwhite. Had I known that Kindle books can be downloaded I would've considered other options. 🤦♂I've already been using Calibre for at least a decade to side load stuff from elsewhere so it wouldn't change much.
This one's pricy and maybe a bit too large but if my Kindle dies I'm probably going for it.
Btw I experimented with fonts after watching a video about font for dyslexic people and noticed that despite not being dyslexic I read faster if I have that font set. Regularly I read around 270 wpm in English (not my native language, btw) and with it it's like 340. It's much easier on my eyes and brain because the lines in letters in that font aren't identical, they're fatter at the bottom which makes brain interpret the text faster.
It sounds very cool, but it’s a lot of initial cost for a product that will probably die in a few years. When it goes to a brick, what happens to all your notes? Do you have them in a back up somewhere?
I still prefer physical books. I use the Kindle for reading in the dark and for travel. I am now on my fourth Kindle. The other three all died out of warranty, one about every three to four years. It’s a great device, but that track record already annoys me with the relatively cheap Kindle. As much as I would appreciate the larger screen, I’d be very pissed when my $400 device dies.
Im writing a thesis for my MA degree and I just ordered this because I need something to read PDFs on and annotate them on the go. I already have a Libra 2 and love the Kobo software. Seems like it'll be just what I wanted!

The boox go 10 allows you to write on the pages directly as well. It’s a new device

Can you write on just straight up epub and pdf? I would use it for reading novels (epub) but also for academic papers (pdf). How is the searchable function?
I used a Paperwhite for several years, but have been using a Kindle Oasis for the last 3. I do like the stylus note taking capability of the Kobo, but I’m just not sure I care for the size of it or the extra steps for adding my massive kindle library to it. I do highlight my books on the Oasis, and all of my highlights are saved automatically into Readwise. The Oasis is so portable, easy to use while I’m in bed, and fits in all my smaller sling bags and backpacks. I used to use an iPad for many things but typically just use my phone and kindle oasis for most things now because they are just easier to move around with me. I always have my laptop if I need something bigger. If I get another iPad, it will be a Mini. For the record, I do have eye issues, and I find that the smaller screen of the Kindle Oasis helps. Sometimes too much light and landscape of a bigger screen make things worse for my vision. Also for the record, I like the Oasis way better than the Paperwhite, but both are good.
I bought a Kobo Clara for Overdrive. It's amazing to be able to check out a book from your local library instantly.
In Canada only Kobo has Libby. Can’t use kindle here in library
As i write on the kobo for pdfs, my hand will rest on the screen and many times, the page will go blank before it goes to another page. It's awkward to write without resting your hand on it. I couldn't change the thickness size of the pen line while writing on pdf either. I tried to change the settings at Notebook page but the changes only apply on the notebook page and not on pdfs. Is anyone facing the same problem? 😞
My biggest hesitation to this vs my Paperwhite is just the weight and size. I can hold the Paperwhite in so many different positions for a long period of time without it ever feeling heavy. Worried this will feel a bit too burdensome, but maybe I'm wrong.
I sideload all my ebooks using Calibre to organize them, so for my switching from kindle to kobo was fine. That and amazon has made it difficult to purchase ebooks from their site with using another card. If i want to auto purchase something on my kindle it has to be my default care which would be my bills debit card and not my spending.
Sooo its annoying as fuck lately to buy ebooks. I might just make the change i got a 7th gen kindle paperwhite and there is barely any difference compared to the newer ones other than my firmware is no longer supported and last update i notified my battery life has tanked, which knowing amazon was probably deliberate.
I’m definitely going to put this on my radar the next time I’m shopping for an e reader. Thanks for the video

I have an Oasis that I purchased years ago and a Kobo Forma I bought a year later or so. Since the Kobo, I haven’t looked back. The Oasis sits in a drawer.
Also, just to add: When you purchase a Kindle book you don’t own the book unless you use calibre. With Kobo, they are epubs and you just transfer over to your files.
If it had memory card slot expansion memory I would consider it
I just got the kobo libra 2. As a die hard physical fan I can’t put my e reader down and I have done waaaaaay more reading since I bought it.
thank you for your review.exactly what i was afraid of seeing, i saw in your review.. you see, i owned a kobo ereader around 2015... that flickering on the e ink and on the interaction/ page change denotes the kobo software problems. that flickering when you change from page view to collection or page change has driven me crazy for a couple of years until the battery died.. and i think it died because of the stress caused by the ongoing flickering. at one time ater it wont charge anymore unless i stress myself charging it LOL. so i said bye bye kobo... bye bye kobo, now i agree with writing directly on tyhe page, that is amazing, but sadly the software problems beat the amazing feat of writing on the page,so i prefer making notes and opening the notes later in scribe than writing directly on page on a bad software that flickers non stop killing the battery and overheating the entire product in the process ......, by the way....... even i did not buy either i think i will be happy with a crisp turning page scribe instead
Hey Matt, it's obviously not a huge deal, but at 3:22 you stated that no other E-reader lets you write directly on Epubs or PDFs, but the ReMarkable (at least the first Gen one I have) absolutely does allow you to do that. Great video otherwise though! (That gen one is starting to have issues, so I'm doing research on the elipsa as a replacement, thanks for the awesome review!)
Yes and no. On the remarkable whats happening internally is the file is being converted to a PDF, which ruins a lot of the functionality of actual epub files. You can't reformat the text, images are hit and miss, you can't format margins or text size, or font.
Everyone I know with a remarkable ends up not using it as an e-reader.
While I appreciate this, I never take notes(maybe because I’m a new reader), so for the price increase, it just wouldn’t be worth it for me. I’m starting Red Rising today, so maybe notes will become necessary at some point.

I have scanned pdf files of articles. Would the Kobo be able to handle it gracefully?
Great review Matt! This is definitely a strong contender for my next e-reader. Just one question: do the converted books display page numbers? I could not tell from the video. I gotta have page numbers lol.
They display page numbers for how many actual pages are left within your reader. The Kindle shows the pages as if you were reading the real book, so it may take 2 or 3 pages turns to say the next page is done.
I much prefer the way the Kobo does it, so you know how many page turns are left to finish the chapter.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Ah! That actually sounds really dope. I could see myself liking that better as well because I’m always looking ahead to see how many pages I have left in a chapter. I find the “time left” option in Kindle to be pretty inaccurate at times.
@@KindlesandKicks Jumping on here to say - I love this about Kobo devices. It gives you, literally, the amount of page turns until the next chapter or until the end of the book. No weird time guesses (three mins left = really?) - just simple info that’s appreciated.

I still wouldn't swap my Kindle Scribe for this. The ability to annotate on the page, which seems like the main difference isn't enough to warrant giving up the Amazon/Kindle ecosystem for. Downloading books from Amazon is seamless and instantaneous. This device, not so much. I think if Amazon ever manages to provide an on-screen annotation update, it will be perfect.
Matt can you 'download all' your kindle books at once or do you have to do them individually? And same question with the epub conversion?
From kindle you have to do it one by one. But you can get through all the clicks is just a few seconds. There's also a way to put them all onto calibre at once and then mass convert them all at once.
For the epub conversation you can do them all at once.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews and how easy is it for the notes to show up. Can I click on a name write, notes about that person, and then when the same name shows up 30 pages later is there an easy way to check those notes?

@@eggbert6900 it doesn't know what you wrote, so it will just stay on the page and put a bookmark there so you can find it. No ebook can do that. I just keep a separate notepad open and write all the characters down in it.
And yes, on notepads it can convert to text.

How does kindle unlimited work with a Kobo? Does it work at all? Some of the series I’m reading are on kindle unlimited so would I be able to use it on a Kobo?

Interesting review, but I have a question: aren't most of the latest amazon ebooks blocked from being converted? I have a Kobo Libra and when I tried converting the few Amazon ebooks I have the conversion was not possible and I'm forced to read them on my phone through the kindle app, since I don't own a Kindle ereader.
Your mistake was to give money to that filthy company instead of getting the free PDF from Library Genesis and importing it to your splendid Kobo xD

I 100% believe you if you say this is a better product but I have to admit it is slightly funny that the thing making it better again over a Kindle is the ability to do what a regular book already allows you to do. Obviously I know there are other things about E-readers that make them better than regular books but it was just funny to me
lol yeah, but even outside of the benefits of ereaders the ability to erase, and transport notes is huge and you can't do that on a regular book.
Something like a BOOX Tab Ultra C still demolishes something like the elipsa.
I mean not really fair to compare the kindle to a device 3 times its price. It's a mass market product, not niched down like the kobo.

As long as it's in kepub you can write on it.

Quick question, but first, Excellent timing on this video Matt. Thank you! I was just about to order a Kindle Scribe, and I saw you mention your Kobo in one of your livestreams. Ever since then I was really curious why you chose that over a kindle.
However I’m still not convinced and may still end up getting the kindle. So it seemed like the main thing you liked about this is the ability to write and draw directly on the ebook, which you can’t do on the kindle. The thing is, that is not very important to me, and also the whispersync feature on kindle is basically a must have for me at this point, where it syncs with audiobooks on a phone tablet or computer. I don’t think Kobo has anything similar does it?
And also having less books, and the Kobo store being more of a pain would probably make it not worth it for me. Considering all that, I think I’m still leaning kindle, would you say that’s a good choice for me, or is there some other hidden Kobo feature that you think I’d love based on what I’ve said? Because again it sounded like it was mostly the ability to write on books for you, which is super cool, but I probably wouldn’t use it. That much.
Given that, I think an Amazon product is best. However, it sounds to me like the best bet for you will be the paperwhite, not the scribe. The scribe functions on the scribe are very weak, so it doesn't seem worth the price to me.

Honestly no idea, I don't use those functions.
it looks so good but, kindle store and library is just too good to make me change to a better e-reeder.
If you already have a kindle, it's SUPER easy to transfer all your books from kindle to kobo.

Too big. Too heavy. Cant integrate kindle store. My ipad can do all of this.
Size and weight is kind of personal preference, but it definitely can get all your kindle books - just requires 1 extra step.
Your ipad isn't eink and is a huge strain on your eyes compared to ereaders.
I cant justify spending money on one of these things. My phone functions perfectly for reading books.
You might want to think about getting a used older kindle - they are SUPER cheap on ebay and do wonders for your eyes. The difference between phone lighting and eink is miles different and you will be saving yourself eye trouble down the road.
The biggest difference to me is light shining at you from a smartphone or ipad (backlighting) versus light shining the opposite way instead, *towards* the surface of the e-ink display (frontlighting). The latter is so much easier on the eyes over long periods of time.

It does take a little figuring out at the beginning, but once you do it's super easy and is a much better reading experience than a normal book.
