Costing only $13 to build, Pauper Zombies offers a fun tribal strategy that approaches the metagame from a slightly different angle of other black and aggro decks. Zombies is resilient. While not the fastest deck (it is firmly in the midrange camp) it can recover from removal rather easily.
Zombies thrives in metagames rife with creature decks. It can take them out rather effectively while also establishing a board state where your Shepherds and Polluters will win the game in short order. If you’re looking for something different and something that is sure to get new cards every few years, you can look into Zombies. Let’s take a look!

The other thing about Shepherd of Rot is that it can steal a draw from the jaws of defeat by putting both players at 0 or less life simultaneously.
Joshua Williams wouldn't the person with the lowest life total then still lose. At least that seems logical to me.
Jason Prins nope, death is state based only on the condition of life below zero after triggers end. There is no difference between 0 and negative infinity, it's a draw.
After watching enough of your pauper videos I think I am gonna try and build a pauper deck and go to some events! Thank you for your awesome content. Has really helped me along being so new to the game. You’re awesome!
I can say with proud that this is my brew prof. When i made a 5-0 in a mtgo league just a few weeks ago the deck went from 3 tix to 14ish. I´m very glad this called your atention.... there´s still a lot of ground to innovate in pauper. Greetings prof!

Phew! In before the hike! I just bought the cards to finish a budget Gisa and Geralf commander deck and a few cards here were on the list. Glad I snatched 'em up now because prices tend to climb after one of these excellent deck techs.
Speaking of, I really like this build. A zombie midrange deck with a fireball finish is a really cool deck concept.

I'm taking this deck to my first Pauper event today in Maine! I tweaked the sideboard a bit, (+1 Nameless Inversion, +1 Mind Wrench, +3 Nihil Spellbomb, +3 Rancid Earth, -3 Duress, -2 Oblivion Strike, -3 Choking Sands) but the maindeck is the same. Wish me luck!

This deck list will be a surprise to my play group and it looks fun to play.
I just want to say that the deck tech's (This counts the old Commander brainstorms) are easily my favorite videos by you Professor! Especially the Pauper ones.
Could you do a "How-To" on getting started brewing in such a wide format? The pool is so large I usually find myself trying to build something tribal just to help me focus because just building a "GW good stuff" deck gets pretty hard with thousands of cards in the pool and no key mechanic to help focus on.
I finally decided to get on the pauper craze. I never could find a deck that I liked to play. But recently I decided to set out to try to make a home brew deck and I ended up with a Green Red Zoo deck. I get to play rancor and lightning bolt, 2 of my favorite commons ever so I am super excited.

Prof! This is perfect!!! I've been wanting to build a set of 5 mono-colour tribal decks for Pauper, mostly for home play. With this, and your Elves deck tech, I'm that much closer! All I need now is Goblins, Merfolk and....whatever white's best known for. :D Maybe angels or soldiers? ^_^

This deck is mostly intact in Historic pauper and is bomb. I actually recalled this video when i made my first pauper deck on arena last week. Easily the strongest tribe.
4 years later I am liking this deck. Especially since it's very much keeping it honest on the type of cards you play and how. It is also beginner friendly once you understand the target and the means to get there which are simple, mostly dying = benefit. I like to combine it with rats to either discard opponents cards off their hands or for other means. True it is outdated and many decks in the meta now eat this strat alive, especially the decks not having creatures in the first place, however there are sideboard options like rats exactly that attack what your opponent has in hand rather than on the field

Great deck! I have a pauper zombies deck, but this one has some different stuff going on. Mine had Carnophage and Sangrophage in it for some bigger creatures, but they also cost life to keep them in play. I might have to do some editing. :)
I built a Shepherd of rot deck 15 years ago out of a box of commons for $11, I won't pay a dime over that!

Horned Kavu next. Abuse that wonderful burning tree emissary, mog warmarshal, kelden marauders, and even blastoderm. Toss in bolt and rift bolt for removal and sweet delecious gruul kavu goodness
I love the pauper format. It's very much like the MTG play style that I first learned back in '95. I don't like spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on decks. Yeah, I have a degenerate modern burn deck because I'm a degenerate modern burn player, and I've certainly put together expensive standard decks before, but it's hard to beat pauper for sheer fun.
Shambling Ghast is a new addition that has the model option of ramping you when it dies.

Hi I'm new to mtg and enjoy watching your videos especially on commander. I'm currently building a merfolk edh (100% homebrew) and was looking at combos I could use in the deck. Now the reason I'm writing this post is because I've got a combo but not sure if it will work. The combo is inexorable tide and panharmonicon, but inexorable says play a spell proliferate, so I play a creature would this trigger panharmonicon?

Hello professor. I admit it. You hooked me. Now I’m very interested in pauper. I had an idea that I need some help with. In order to pick up quick games and maybe even introduce new players, I wanted to make 5 mono-colored pauper decks. Ideally I’d like the decks to be balanced and make for fun interesting games. Are the deck you have on your channel balanced for each other? And also could you please make a build for mono-blue? Hope you read this and I’m anxious to see more. Thank you so much

I'm wondering why this doesn't run doom blade. I'm sure there's a good reason, just not entirely sure. Is it because tragic slip is faster? Nameless inversion as a zombie makes sense. And the edicts also make sense against decks like bogles.

Prof, unless I am mistaken but on the full deck list you have Chainer's Edict well it is a nice card I cannot see when it was printed at common. I found this when I was going buy the deck.
It's a common in Vintage Masters so you can use your paper ones from Torment or FTV in pauper.
Is chainers edict legal in paper pauper?

Gray Merchant of Asphodel seems to be a staple card in any black pauper deck. I see it almost as much as I see Capsize in blue and Quicksand in control decks =/

The one that rotates is the Standard Format. This format is on Pauper

Hi there! M:tG newcomer here. When you mention that this deck will "Never Rotate Out", do you mean that it'll never rotate out of Standard, or out of Pauper only? I'm not so clear on the whole Set Rotation and Pauper Format thing. I really like this deck and video! Very clear, concise, and enjoyable.
michael todd standard rotates, pauper doesn't. He's poking fun at those playing standard.
