This was a bit of a nostalgia bomb for me. My friends and I used to do a $5 challange in college. We'd each take $5 and hit up the common's and uncommons box at the local games shop (this was in 98-99, so commons were 10 cents or 15 for a dollar, and bulk uncommons were 25 cents each) and build the best deck we could using our own basic lands. I distinctly remember making a Tortured Existence deck in black and green with cards at the time, though it wasn't exactly pauper since we all had some uncommons.
I really want to see if either of the local shops is interested in doing some pauper events now, I feel like reliving some old card adventures.
The kind of challenging but unpretentious game Magic should be.
"Tortured Existence: How is this card a common?" is exactly what I said when I opened my first pack of Stronghold and read it for the first time. I couldn't afford to build ProsBloom, but I did have a lot of fun in the graveyard.
I've decided to buy this deck and build a pauper playgroup locally. Thanks for this video, and all the other work you've put into the pauper format. I never thought I'd play magic again before learning about commander and pauper.

It plays like legacy and almost every deck archetype from other formats are viable to some degree in pauper.
Because there's a healthy and thriving metagame to Magic once you peel off the veneer of broken rares over MTG's history. Sans Delver of Secrets, a handful of around 60 or 70 rares are so strong in Modern and Vintage that nothing else is playable unless it ties into those cards. Pauper lets all sorts of shenanigans ensue.
Love the pauper deck techs. Your Pauper videos got me into the format years ago and I have since been playing off and on casually in paper (not on MTGO). Hopefully they make the Online banned list the official list for both Online and Paper. I hope to attend a Rags to Riches event one day.

I've been playing this deck and i've had so much success with it. I've modified it a bit. I found that it of the horrid swarm is a beast in the long game and can be recurred over and over.

Professor. Your breakdowns of these Pauper decks are clear, concise, and entertainingly informative. I have wanted to play with a commons only format since Mercadian Masques, but had no idea there was an actual format with a community till very recently. These are fantastic. Keep them coming sir. I hope to someday tap some carboard with you one day.

I absolutely love pauper, it's one of my favourite formats simply because anyone can get access to it. I wish WOTC just put more pauper reprints into masters sets or other specialty sets. Older cards like Oubliette and tortured existence could do with a reprtin, and even some newer cards could too. Ash barrens was released 2 years ago but is roughly $8 each. I hope the success of Pauper at the recent GP will help persuade WOTC to do more reprints :(

Thanks Professor. You gave purpose to some unused commons of my collection. I accidently bought too many Grave Scrabbler while building my mono black modern Zombie-Discard Deck using Zombie Apocalypse and I always loved Golgari Brownscale but I never knew how to use the Brownscale in a playable Deck.

Here's a BUG Pauper list I found called Pig Trinket from a while back that has many cool ways to get card advantage. Not sure how it would fare in an aggro-heavy environment though. There's videos around of a guy playing it I think.

Ha, at the end he kept telling the viewer to ring the bell and I finally clicked it just before he said "thank you". It made it feel like he could tell if we clicked it or not lol.
That new black vampire common that's like a life drain variant of Elvish Visionary might be another tool to play with here. Super encouraged to see more strength in paper pauper, curious to see what CFB does with its events.

In my local gamestore pauper has just started to spread, and this sounds like right what I was looking for
I already had the Izzet blitz deck you showed, and have built a slivers decks, 'cause it reminded me of my Merfolks and this sounds about great to add some more variety to my deck pool (Though I'll probably tinker a little with red, at the very least)

The timing, Jesus. I was about to buy a mono white pauper deck so I could participate on a pauper tournament tomorrow. But, honestly I really wanted to make a tormented existence deck, but it seemed to complex to learn in a day. But, you know what screw that excuse.
I have no idea where to start with Pauper, so I thought I'd build around Delver, Nivix Cyclops, and Kiln Fiend. Thanks for the insight into what this format can do!
Izzet blitz is a deck in the format built around those very cards. Lots of can trips, cheap pump, and killing people very fast.

Thanks! I watched the Professor's video on Izzet Blitz and though he doesn't use Delver, I can't resist using it with Ponder and Preordain. Seems like those 12 creatures will be just right for this deck.

Great deck tech, I run a super pure version of this deck and I have seen so many different splashes that work out well. Tortured Existence has to be the most malleable engine in pauper apart from TRON imo. I'm looking forward to playing a match against you tomorrow!

Nice deck Professor . But is has done something more for me . Since i´m brewing to spice up a nice Pestilence pauper deck and just went Orzhov (my own not the one you find online) , I will now try an Abzan version of the deck helping me find circles also and maybe even spice up my managain to end the game quicker thanks to the entchantment finder cards that were not on my radar for this deck .

Jepp Benefaction is essentially a slower version of Commune with the Gods in this deck. Probably unnecessary, given that this list is already running Commune.

I'm worried that all of the new pauper play in tournaments will begin to drive the cost of pauper staples up especially in paper which could ruin the budget aspect of the format. One way to help this could be to have pauper cards in the next printing or eternal masters as it is an eternal set

I'm not very familiar with the Pauper format, but I've noticed recently that a lot of the decklists I see run mostly 1-ofs and 2-ofs, with playsets being pretty rare. Why is that? I realize that this is meant to be a toolbox deck but I've seen other decks doing the same thing.
