"Who in their right mind could deny that the 20th century was entirely mine? ALL OF IT KEVIN. All of it." What an epic line to conclude that speech and no one else could have done it better.
One added element, that fits perfectly into this movie, as it pertains to John Milton's tirade, is when he included the words: "Popes, Swamis, Snake-Handlers, all feeding at the same trough". He's right! There have been so many false prophets in so many different "Religious Organizations", that it's actually horrifying! The main religious organization that I see of being the most guilty of this particular type of hypocrisy, is the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements! They fool the most unwitting peoples, with their fakery! I do believe that HELL will be the absolute hottest for those who deceive others... especially in the name of "Religion"!!!
Kevin clearly has never watched Scarface otherwise he would have known that gun would never have had much of an effect. Im Satan; you fuck with me you fucking with the best.
@@danielsmithiv1279 The difference is subtle, but certainly there. I was mainly speaking in reference to the judeo-christian seven deadly sins, in which both pride and vanity are considered different (vanity: excessive love of one's own appearance, pride: love of oneself that dwarfs one's love of God, even to the point of believing oneself to be God). That and all of the seven deadly sins (including vanity) are considered to be merely different expressions of the same root of all evil: pride.
@@thek2despot426 Interesting break down of pride and vanity. But, when it comes to the seven deadly sins, the seven deadly sin concept isn't in the Bible. All sins open up the doorway to darkness and are all equal in God's eyes. But in reality, different sins have different levels of consequences.
*shoots Pacino* "Yeah! Yeah! You got a whole lot of that fury! That's the final thing to go." It's hilarious how Pacino just keeps bullshitting him to no end.
Christopher A. . Don't mean to play the devils advocate, but in the legal sense of the word he only bull shited him just once so as not to infringe upon his free will . And the time that he lied to him had nothing to do with him, it was when they were on the subway and lomax asked him what he said to thoso Porto rican guys in Spanish and he gave him a throw away line. The thing is he merely dangled the fruits of his desires in front of him and it was lomax who picked them out of his own free will. What is clear no matter how you slice is if someone puts rewards in front of competitive person without a solid moral foundation what you will get is a complete riot of their senses and ticket worth buying to watch one of the most predictable yet interesting shows on earth. To competent men the greatest drug is really their ego and the overriding urge to feed it by putting more wood into the fire so it burns and shines brighter.( in the hands of the less experienced sometimes that fire gets out of hand and it devours everything in it's path including the fire starter ) And what coal burns brighter then winning even if it is tie the no loss record stands so you used half the coal and got half the shine men have endless appetites but very few have the stomach to withstand the pain their desires can inflict on them when their table , plate and cup over runneth there is bill somewhere that is also running and toll that must be paid one way or the other. ..You know thoso old sayings are not around because they are cute they lasted to this old age beacuse ppl have lived them and experienced them in their true sense of the word so they get passed on. And two of my favourite sayings that are very appropriate for this scene are : be careful what you wish for and don't bite off more then you can chew . There are endless supply of them from many different cultures and religious and they all have the same ends to learn from the mistakes of thoso who came befor you so you don't repeat them. There is alot to be said for recycling old fables to the younger generation and giving them a balanced religious upbringing beacuse it can spare a person falling in to the wrong rabbit hole and forfeiting something of value for trinkets that are prone to losing their shine when compared to what they were exchanged for. Guess you can say Lomax was having a buyers remorse in this scene. Those of us who have ever worked in retail know that a refund is out of the question once a item has being used.
One of my favourite movies of all time and even Keanu Reeves steps up and delivers a more than solid performance. That Pacino speech though, one of the greatest ever deliveries you'll ever see. Brilliant writing and a brilliant cast.
"Free will. It's like butterfly wings: once touched, they never get off the ground. No, I only set the stage. You pull your own strings." That quote describes a lot.
Well, the thing I think the quote describes. Does'nt have anything with determinism to do. It's rather, that this a metaphor about how the evil and malicious rulers of the world. Sets things up for people to follow. Like subversive ideolgical movements, or how they set up riots (BLM) or anything destructive at all. And how, we the people, pull our own strings. Being a mindless man or woman, that lives under the influence of globalistic psychopaths, that set the stages of malicious events of which political activists participate in. Its a very deep movie.
"I'd say me and Mary-Ann got it on at about.......seven!" lol the way he says that line is hilarious every time. One of the best things about this movie is Al Pacino. You can tell he's having a blast playing John Milton in every scene.
@@JUYAN16 Wrong, he said seven and he even holds seven fingers up. And btw, the number seven is no coincidence. He is referring to the Seven deadly sins...
This movie is so disturbing I don’t know if I can ever see it twice but Keanu Reeves really threw himself head over heels into this role. His emotions and body language are so realistic in this scene and the part where he tries to save Mary Ann in the hospital. He really should have been nominated for an Oscar for this performance. I know a lot of people pick on him for his supposed demerits as an actor but he really outdid himself here.
Everyone always told me to be successful in life and have wins instead of losses, then I see Al Pacino in this role as the king of New York, unlimited amounts of money, respect, successful and charming. Who knew the perfect human being would turn out to be the devil
@@adolfhipster6019 well, if you look at the bible, it would appear that humans have been given basic instincts, sexual drives, feelings and what have you only to have some of those instincts, sexual desires and feelings to be labelled as sins or impure thoughts.
I love the use of lighting in this scene. Whenever Al Pacino goes into a rant he moves closer to the camera and you get a nice view of his face. Using a red light just makes him look so much more irate.
Al (Devil) says he had many children over time who failed him. I think God, being the goof of all time, created an ironic situation where all of the Devil's his children would rebel/not listen to him, the way the Devil did to God. God did it for the lulz. :x
2:19-2:28 "LOSE?! I DON'T LOSE, I WIN! I WIN! I'M A LAWYER, THAT'S MY JOB! THAT'S WHAT I DO!" That was one of the best parts of the whole film right there.

There is always good and bad things in life, that is why God gae us freewill to decipher and distinguish the good from the bad.
Ali Asif I was just enjoying the dialogue, I'm an agnostic (I was raised Roman Catholic) by the way. I don't see how admiring and admitting your victories is a bad thing. He never said he was perfect and the character knows that. He was just saying that he never loses a case and he doesn't intend on doing so. Striving to be your best doesn't make it that you're under the influence of the supreme avatar of evil. By the way, Kevin never gave in to Satan even though he was tempted.
TRENEX 379 You see by saying never he's implying that he's perfect but that all proved to be in vain when he made a pact with the Devil himself. People in the end always suffer once they extend their trust with Satan.

I find this well acted, and contains some salient points. My personal view is that Satan is the personification of our dark sides - the sides that many of us are not willing to face up to. But the darkness must not be in opposition to the light: the two opposites must co-exist side-by-side. If one goes too far to either side, lop-sidedness and ill health will result. Satan and all other deities are not objective realities, but subjective psychological realities.
nice...you've fallen into cabalistic doctrines already; satan is the impersonification of evil in us, the 'shadow', right? Then there are no dualisms, just 'experiences', right? The light of lucifer, the light bearer, , the one who brings enlightment, right? Do you know what is satan's finest trick? To make people believe he doesn't exist !!! Humanism and liberalism were invented by talmudists, since they could not spread their ideologies around the world saying they were cabalistic/taludistic, coud they? So tody, the entire #ne age' pagan garb going around comes straight from the book of zohar an's cabala !! darwin didn't invent anything new, he just copied and followed what rabbis of the babylonian talmud have been writing for millenium, the cabala account of creation !! marx was also a talmudist; he knew God exists, but as a talmudist, he hated God; one can google his satanic poems; his son, when writing letter to Marx, used to start "my dear devil " !! Ill health will result? I'm well aware of the mental health fake propaganda going around in our world: the new fake paradigms, right? If one doesn't use right hand side brain, one is insane, right? Well, I do not think so !! mentally ill are those who ignore reason, logic, analysis or tradition !! What we see today is the revival of the ancient paganism, only with recycled terminology ! Just ofr you to know, not everyone goes with the unthinking sheep flow, some of us will never give in to proper reason and God no matter what 'the rule of law' says or not (the seven laws of noah) - QUI UT DEUS?
Michael Berridge I don't think he's the personification of our dark side. Because, moraly, there are a lot of things that are ok to be done and evey body that doesn't believe in some kind of god, is ok with (even the majority who believe ins some kind of god are ok with them). Just take sex, for example. Sex before marriage. That's not our dark side. It's just human nature. And it's one of our most basic instincts. Even Pacino talks about instincts in the movie. If there is a god, he's either an asshole or he doesn't exist.
Luis rodrigues coelho The real secret is that he is both real and an individual *and* in our "inner space" as it were. It's just that our inner space is more real than most people think. It's not an either/or.

Luis rodrigues coelho I would say the opposite that the greatest trick the devil ever did was convince us that he is real. I see way more suffering in that scenario. If people didn't believe there was no devil then the world would be a better place.
This is a great movie it truly is, this was after Taylor Hackford (the director) had given us Dolores Claiborne another masterpiece. I think its time to re-watch this one again.
The greatest joke being that we are all God. We are all Satan. We are all in a state of infancy as it pertains to self awareness and are simply enduring an internal conflict of interest.
This makes me wonder if the devil in this movie had historical figures as children, considering they apparently inherit incredible competence and persuasion skills from him like Kevin did.
I read some where Al Pacino was concerned about playing Satan. He spoke to his Priest who simply asked “Does Satan lose in the end of the movie? If so, have no fear Al.”
This miserliness and the poor choice of charity is from Satan, who fears poverty, tempts you with miserliness, and commands you to commit disobedience and disobey God Almighty, and God Almighty promises you to spend forgiveness for your sins and a vast sustenance. And God is abundant in grace, Knowing of deeds and intentions And do not follow your enemy, Satan, who commands you to seize, and frightens you with poverty and need if you spend. Obey your Lord who commands you to spend in a way that is easy for you and does not harm you His saying: He promises you a promise, and in its origin it is a common language of good and evil, and in the common usage it is a promise in good and repetition in evil. It was used here in the case of evil in view of the origin of the situation, because poverty is what a person sees as evil, and that is why Satan frightens the spenders with it.The meaning: Satan threatens you if you spend with poverty and loss of money, warns you against giving charity due to what whispers in your souls of evils and sins, and tempts you to commit sins, the most odious of which are extreme miserliness and fatal scarcity. Satan fears God, and this was stated in the Quran in the Almighty’s saying: And when you saw the two groups, he turned back and said, I am free of you, and I see what you do not see, but God And in the Almighty’s saying: (Like Satan when he said to man, “Disbelieve.” When he disbelieved, he said, “I am innocent of you. I fear God.” But this fear of him is a fear of nature and nature, and is not a legitimate fear that deters him and deters him from disobedience. And it was said: Satan only said that a lie As for verse 48 of Surat Al-Anfal, the transmission was combined that Satan had appeared to the polytheists in the form of stealing bin Malik Al-Kinani, so the polytheists did not know him for his true nature, but rather knew him as a thief, so he urged them to march to Badr and fight the Muslims, and he said to them: “You have no victor, and I am your neighbor.” . But when Iblis saw the descending of the angels at the meeting of the two ranks and knew that the polytheists had no power over them, he retreated and said to them: “I am innocent of you, I see what you do not see. I fear God.” He told them that I fear God is just a justification for his retreat from them
He is exactly right. The Devil represents man, what man needs, what man wants.God is a non-existing deity as well, but representing something that we can never become and that is something divine,he represents some goal that we can never reach, total and extreme purity and not having anything - only spirituality.
I remember seeing this in the theater I almost didn't because I had had a cold and still had a lingering cough my boyfriend was worried I was too sick to go out but I drank half a bottle of cough syrup first and was alright. I really wanted to see it I liked Keanu but had also been a co op student at a large law firm and an interest in legal studies I think the film really emphasised how evil can thrive in some environments more than others even Kevin maybe could've preserved his soul more had he stayed small content with his loving wife but put him in a big city and the greed and pride and lust and other temptations were too much for him his wife was totally overwhelmed with the lifestyle change and he just disregarded her completely. Interesting too how the reporter morphs into the devil at the end also like the Matrix anyone can potentially be an agent or evil people can't be too trusting or naive.
Holy Shit, what is with all the religious, anti-religious bullshit. I just wanna watch Al Pacino be all adorable and yell at Keanu, who's yelling his little wooden heart out. "I'd say...theven?"
It’s actually greed. Think about it, the devil had huge power when he was an angel, actually he was more than an angel. If I’m not mistaken, he was an archangel and he had control of the music. But, he wanted more, that’s why he said in his heart “I want to be like God” and be up there and usurp his throne up in the third heaven. So it’s greed
Brilliant film. Pretty much The Devil is a mascot created by man to avoid our basic human instincts. Like most books, where their's a protagonist you'll find an antagonist. Almost like we avoid our instincts through fear of self doubt and shame. Our self consciousness usually leads to self righteousness to maneuver what we humans do best: Bullshitting ourselves. Denial is one hell of a strong defense mechanism, but we do see the flaw in denial where what we preach against is sometimes secretly our biggest temptation. Vanity & Hypocrisy sleep blissfully side by side.

"Who in their right mind could deny that the 20th century was entirely mine? ALL OF IT KEVIN. All of it."
What an epic line to conclude that speech and no one else could have done it better.
He’s doing pretty well in the 21th century as well.
One added element, that fits perfectly into this movie, as it pertains to John Milton's tirade, is when he included the words:
"Popes, Swamis, Snake-Handlers, all feeding at the same trough".

Between this and Constantine, Keanu Reeves is an expert at dealing with the devil.
True!
"Vanity: Definitely my favorite sin."
+AynRandy69 Yes, the root of all other sins.
YES Vanity...it's my favorite sin :) Al is awesome!!!!
@@thek2despot426 Vanity=pride.
Vanity is simply an archaic term for pride.
The funny thing about this speech is He was telling the HARD TRUTH!!
*shoots Pacino* "Yeah! Yeah! You got a whole lot of that fury! That's the final thing to go." It's hilarious how Pacino just keeps bullshitting him to no end.
"i take your fuckin bullet!"

Yes, absolutely genius acting by Al Pacino.
@@adolfhipster6019 absolutely brilliant. Massively underrated film, Reeves even took less money to secure Pacino.
@@Shadoefax760 Reeves seems like a kind-hearted person.
It's movies like this that prove to me that Keanu Reeves acting skills are very underrated.
You pull your own strings."
That quote describes a lot.
Daniel Eriksson there’s no such thing as free will.
The production team likely got the lines from the butterfly affect movies
@@Tuxy79 that's not TRUE!

He said eleven, not seven.
@@JUYAN16 Wrong, he said seven and he even holds seven fingers up. And btw, the number seven is no coincidence. He is referring to the Seven deadly sins...

Christian Karl Karganilla It is in fact seven. If you google the script you will see. :)
Who in their right mind Kevin, could possibly deny, the 20th century was entirely mine...ALLL OF IT KEVIN!!!
I just can't forgive the accent at times.
Everyone always told me to be successful in life and have wins instead of losses, then I see Al Pacino in this role as the king of New York, unlimited amounts of money, respect, successful and charming. Who knew the perfect human being would turn out to be the devil
Phenomenal monologue, the best line of the movie 'who can deny the 20th century was all mine'. Just perfect

How so?
TRENEX 379 "I DON'T LOSE, I WIN!

Saying that you are perfect and void of mistakes is a sign that you are indeed delusional and under the Devil's influence that nothing can go wrong in life. There is always good and bad things in life, that is why God gae us freewill to decipher and distinguish the good from the bad.
Ali Asif
I was just enjoying the dialogue, I'm an agnostic (I was raised Roman Catholic) by the way.

Luis rodrigues coelho +Michael Berridge The real secret is that he is both real and an individual *and* in our "inner space" as it were. It's just that our inner space is more real than most people think. It's not an either/or.
Luis rodrigues coelho I would say the opposite that the greatest trick the devil ever did was convince us that he is real. I see way more suffering in that scenario. If people didn't believe there was no devil then the world would be a better place.

Keanu effortlessly bulldozed off the screen in this one scene

Devil isn't humanist, He wants our souls. In true he envies of humanity and God. Envy was The First Sin
I thought Pride was the First Sin, thinking you know better than God.
Actually he was a serpahim which is even higher
"I'm a little more than that, Kevin"
I always laugh at the way Pacino says that 😂
If Pacino could read an excerpt of dr Seuss it would sound so good it would earn him a Grammy for best spoken word album
One of my Favorite movies ever!!
Al Pacino is great af and we all know that, but Keanus is pretty good here too
And from that day forth... Keanu hasn't aged a day!
