- European beech is, in many ways, an easy hardwood to finish in a woodworking project because any clear protective finish will come out beautifully with little effort. Beech is a dense and closed-grain wood, and that makes it nice for getting a wonderful glass-smooth sheen. However, it's a little difficult to stain or dye and get the color to come out evenly. That is unless you know a few tricks. So in this video we'll show you all kinds of tips and techniques for both clear finishes as well as for staining the wood to get your best result for your woodworking projects.
Thanks for the video! I never knew beechwood could be such a game-changer. My local hardwood store gave me a free board to try, and now I’m hooked like a fish on a beechwood line:)
I don't know how I ended up on this video, but it is one of the most useful videos I have ever seen on staining beech wood. Great info :)
Your videos are great 👍🏼 professional... I find your videos are the best
Very Good explanation sir, this comes with your extensive experience
Hi I want to keep my beech stock natural in colour in a satin finish what method is best please I'm a total beginner. Many thanks
You’ve come a long way my friend!
Perfect video for me. as always. Between this and the carpentry book I got last week (woodbook.life) I feel more equipped and confident than ever to undertake projects, even with my small workshop and lack of expensive tools. I was worried about being a beginner in all of this, but I have realized that all of this has been very easy!
Thank you for sharing this friend.
Beechwood stays European favourite
thank to your video,i just saved myself from messing up on a gun stock lol..thank u again
Hi, what sealer did you use? I'm refinishing some beech and it looks blotchy like the last piece you finished. Love the color of that one and would like to replicate it myself. Thank you
Thanks for the helpful video. There isn't as much out there on beech! What would you recommend for getting a walnut color on beech? I have two Folke Ohlsson midcentury chairs (model USA-143) that I am refinishing and definitely don't want to end up with an unattractive color!
That gel stain makes it look so easy!!
Unfortunately here in Italy I haven’t found a black gel stain only those liquid ones. A stain wash I guess. Thinking of trying the seal coat/wash coat then going over it with the black wash. I also have a test bag of dark walnut…. Probably do the same procedure and see how they come out.
That black slab is absolutely impeccable!!
Any advice work, will the procedure be the same as the gel wash? Wipe on, wipe off?
thank you
Very informative video. I have a question. Can we paint beech wood? Like whites/greyish shades. Do we need to sand, prime and paint?
I was trying to stain an opinel knife handle to no avail. Thank you! I was using the wrong kind of stain.
¿Para la madera negra con que tinte has empezado primero? tienes algún vídeo demostrativo donde lo pueda ver, es que quiero hacer unas estanterías para un mueble que tengo de este color y tono ¡UN SALUDO DESDE ESPAÑA!
Thanks, this is what I was looking for, very well made and informative video! Unfortunately here in Eastern Europe we do not have gel stains. Did you use white or steamed beech?
It's steamed, actually. Good question.
Nice
after gel stain. it necesary to finish with oil?
I have a beech knife handle that I finished with 3 coats of pure tung oil and 2 coats of teak oil (BLO - varnish blend), and after a couple weeks of just sitting on my desk, it has turned grey. Any thoughts on why this may be?
Hi can anyone tell me if it would be possible to use a tool like a carbide scraper over a beech dining table and then put a gel stain directly on top?
What kind of dye did you use to achieve that black ?
From Eastern PA and cannot find beech . Unhappy .
Can I add polyurethane over boiled linseed oil on beech
What brand is the jet black stain?
What do you do if you need to dye both sides of a piece? Let one side dry for an hour then do the other?
If it's small enough do the entire piece at the same time. I don't remember of it is discussed in this video, but one trick to using these dyes is to apply it in a succession of diluted coats instead of one full strength coat. Give it a good wipe down with denatured alcohol between coats and even light sanding to even out any lap marks you may have made. when dyeing both sides of a piece, good chance you'll get some lap marks on the edges, so that's one way to fix them.
The topics covered in this wood working book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) varies from wood types to tool types and also uses. It also tells you about the various kinds of wood and just how easy or hard they`re to work with. This book has been very helpful and is a great one for someone just getting into wood working.
the "tung oil' you show in your video is a varnish containing 3% tung oil and probably tougher than laquer. at least do some research.
Of all wood working book I`ve read, this “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) is the greatest. My wood working teacher even suggests his learners to read the book. I am impressed how authors managed to write very detailed topics. The tutorials are clear and simple to follow, the material is fascinating.
