I never assumed that the truck killed the bus driver and the kids; quit the opposite, I always felt that the trucker was giving the bus a push start just to show Mr. Man that he didn’t hate the whole world … just him!
That's how I've always took it as well. David wasn't able to help the bus with his own car (which is a representation of him) but then the truck comes and does it to emotionally attack David and show him that he can do what David himself couldn't. It was never about harming the kids or bus driver, it's all about toying with David and pushing him closer to the brink. I just rewatched this movie again and I'm binging RUclips videos lol. I love this movie so much it's so good. It's also what I love about Lovecraft, they don't come out and say the specific reasoning or show the bad guy himself. They leave that all up to your own brain to bounce around ideas and that's what makes this stuff so good.
Well, actually, if you think about it this way, he’s making men think that he’s going crazy because he assumed that the truck driver will kill anyone in his path but while he’s trying to warn everyone about this truck driver he’s playing the game of “I have no idea what he’s talking about. I saw a bus full of kids. They were probably itching to get home so I gave him a little push to help him get started.” Because you see the promised serial killers is they have developed a skill where they show that they’re not a threat and when you least expect it, that’s when they strike
I always assumed those license plates he has on his truck were trophies from his previous victims. He just picked this guy out for his next victim. He wasn’t interested in anyone else.
Spielberg said that is the exact reason for the plates on the front, he wanted people to think, this guy has done this to so many other folks, and that he kept the plates of those he killed
I’ve seen this film. Was wondering what Spielberg did before JAWS. I like how the truck driver doesn’t really matter, the truck itself is almost a character in of itself. Almost “Christine” kind of thing going on here.

AND I lived near the Terminator gas station when T2 was filmed, lol... When I was kid I was so excited to see a car carrier loaded with General Lee's heading up Placerita Cyn to be launched. A-Team vans, army jeeps but never saw a KIT car.. So much cool stuff filmed there in the good old days. Devil's Rejects was filmed on Soladad by the tunnel in Duel in the Tootie FN Fruity scene. My buddy has the US/Mexico border sign from Blue Streak with Martin Lawrence. They used the CA Aqueduct in Littlerock CA on 87th street as the border crossing. The opening scene in Tango & Cash where Sly blows up the truck with a pistol was filmed a mile from my house. And many many more...
I believe when the truck driver came back with the truck I believe he was helping out the bus driver to get the vehicle started going back on the road again I believe he did not kill the bus driver and the children on board that bus he was only interested in going after the driver with the red car.
@@jacobmassey3897 Maybe he fgured wiping out a school bus would have been a step too far and there would have been a witness. It's one kind of warped logic the trucker had, but he had no hesitation about killing lone people in cars.
Well David Mann was an elitist snob who couldn’t even stand up for his wife. The trucker could see right through what he was. I do think he had respect for the kids and what the bus driver does for a living so he was essentially helping a distant colleague. He just hated what David Mann was and wanted to taunt him.
This film is deeper than people realize. David Mann is a guy who runs away from fear. Tries to avoid it at all costs. Since he believes he cannot win in defending himself from it. The truck is like a bully that keeps pushing him around. Letting him know who's the man. Here the kids make fun of Mann since they know he is not man enough to push the bus. He is as weak as his 6-cylinder Plymouth. As for the truck from Mann's eyes he's a bully but from the bus's eyes he's a hero. This scene says the truck loves supporting the innocent while preying on the weak. Plenty of people like that in politics and law enforcement, etc. Duel trucker for president!
True,Except for one thing, later the truck is on the edge of the road, everytime David attempts to pass, the truck blocks him, eventually David gets out of his car to confront the driver man to man, and he goes to drive away like a bully/ coward. Not much of a man without his truck.
Also what about the victims name David Mann. David as in David vs Goliath. And Mann, what does it mean to be a man. To be a be a man is to have the courage to face your fear.
There is one brief shot during the telephone booth scene where the truck is waiting for him down the road. When the driver realizes what he's doing, he begins to turn around and there's a very brief shot of Carey Loftin's face peering out the side window in HD.
This was an extra scene to make it into a cinema release, along with the level crossing scene (I'm British) & when he phones home at the first garage he stops at. Was originally a TV movie but got such big viewing ratings that Spielberg opted to do these so that the extended length would qualify it for cinemas, hence why the cinema version tends to say "made in 1972".
@@mxmxpr And they had to get another truck and make it look identical to the original which was destroyed when it went over the cliff at the end. If you look close you can see some minor differences between the one in this scene and the other.
There was no sport wrecking a disabled school bus with kids on... The truck driver thrived on the chase of his prey, not just simply killing people. I also think he did that to play mind games with David.

the school bus driver was played by Lou Frizzell, who also played Dusty Rhodes on "Bonanza", and he also played the druggist in the 1971 movie "Summer of 42", he died in 1979 at the age of 59 from lung cancer.
That's interesting. I wondered if he was any relation to Lefty Frizzell or his younger brother David Frizzell, two country music legends. But I couldn't find any connection. It's an unusual name though, so there's probably some family connection somewhere. And also, although I watched Bonanza some in my youth, I never heard of any Dusty Rhodes, except for the famous professional wrestler.
