    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    Ah, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I loved him in Third Rock from the Sun, then didn't see him in anything until Inception. I sat through the entirety of that film thinking "where the hell do I know that guy from?", and only realised afterwards that I didn't recognise him because I had last seen him as a child. Good actor and seems like a smart, polite guy as well.

    The two of them are pretty awesome. Great catch by SC on the socks. Question of Snowden's 'Crime' is well handled by JGL, very impressive person. What they maybe didn't touch on was that Snowden tried to go through proper channels in fixing the crime when he found it and tried to be an official whistle blower, etc., but the various organisations did not want to know. What other choice did he have? Do we not have a moral obligation to stand up when we see these kinds of wrongs?

      I agree. Here's a good analogy for how Snowden broke the law.. Snowden is standing at his window, he looks out his window and through his neighbours window he sees a person he does not recognize, but that he recognizes as being possibly nefarious as they are standing over his neighbour watching them sleep. Poor Ed though, he can't call the cops because his phone is broken, so Ed breaks into his neighbours home also to call the cops. Who gets victimized by Ed's actions? Would the cops then charge HIM with breaking and entering?

      Actually, here's an edit to that analogy, because apparently he tried to blow the whistle through the proper channel, but no one wanted to hear about it, so.. Imagine the cops tell him he's hallucinating, go back to sleep, they say, when he calls them from his home. So Ed breaks into his neighbours home to confront the stranger, which wakes the neighbour who screams what are you both doing in my house?

      He explained one sentence later that he was playing devil's advocate. If you don't know what that means, it's basically when you take a position and argue a perspective you don't actually have, in order to facilitate debate. It's done for a few reasons, mostly to give the other person a chance to address potential arguments and to better explain themselves.

    The whole point of having a conscience is that it is meant to be used when 'laws' are either not moral (as they are legal frameworks that have been racist and more in the past), or when moral laws, like the constitution, are being broken. Snowden is a hero. The reason they want him punished is that they don't like the precedent of a citizen rightfully noting and going against the double standard in the Goverment. People who just say "He broke a law" clearly don't have any idea about cognitive moral reasoning. Look up Kohlberg and morality: You'll find that Snowden's critics are psychologically deemed less sophisticated in their reasoning than Snowden is, who reasoned and acted on deeper principles. Those who want him punished simply lack the moral insight to see how good he truly is.

      In both segments of this interview with JGL, Colbert was perched like an Eagle- stoic and just waiting for a moment to pounce. He was waiting to do it, and when he got his moment he went for it. JGL is so likable you would expect Colbert to be smiling and goofing with him, but it felt like Colbert wouldn't allow himself to do that- because he's got a stick up his ass about Snowden.
      But now the real question is: DOES he really? The "real" Colbert inside the new very expensive CBS Late Night host? Seems hard for me to believe that given his entire history of comedic roles. This felt like he got The Word from on high to get into criticality of Snowden to assure America that what he did was not just legally wrong but morally wrong. That's the kind of lecturing response he would give Gordon-Leavitt- when JGL is totally present, being himself, comfortable talking about every side of the person he plays.
      This has happened before- where the normally fun-natured Colbert- dials back any possible "liberal" stance on anything, to conform to the network's dictate to stay "mainstream", which would include "anti-leftist"- stay to the center, where all the ad-revenue comes from. That's why when Colbert interviewed Bill Maher a few months ago he was equally playing a really awkwardly uncomfortable "real life" version of his O'Reilly parody-character on "The Report".
      Colbert's a really versatile and seasoned comedian, and he's still fun of his bag of comedy tricks throughout his show, but it's sad to me he's meekly playing for the Center, to keep the corp guys happy.

    • @AholeAtheist
      @AholeAtheist 8 лет назад

      The American Energy News "actually, the government was breaking the law", that's what I'm saying.
      "analogy doesn't work." Yes it does.
      "if it was someone in the neighbours house stealing shit, or beating up the neighbour that would be appropriate." How does that change anything? The person is still inside the house when they shouldn't be, that is trespassing, it is illegal. Adding them stealing or beating up the neighbour would ruin the analogy, because the government wasn't stealing or enacting violence, it was violating people's privacy.

    • @AholeAtheist
      @AholeAtheist 8 лет назад

      What I'm saying is the cops would normally forgive a minor offence to the person who is offending against someone in a way they intend to help them on a greater scale. If you punch someone's brother in the face to stop them from punching their brother in the face, the cops aren't going to charge you with assault, are they? The brother isn't likely to press charges are they? Unless they're American Republicans, of course.

    I 100% wear mismatch socks. I have been since I was in high school. They were brightly colored as well. I called it peacocking when I was a little kid. It was my chance to be bright when I was a very shy kid. My family all know this and laugh at me 15+ years later.

    Great clip. I feel pretty similar to what Joseph said and I think he described it pretty well here.
    To be honest, I wasn't surprised to hear about the extent of surveillance Snowden made public, and perhaps I was somehow naive to think that most of the public already knew that the US government was doing that.
    Having my phone and internet conversations monitored by the government doesn't really bother me much personally, but I fully respect that as US citizens, we have the right to privacy. I suppose in the grand scheme of things, I'm willing to give up that level of privacy if it will truly make us more safe from potential terrorist plots. Yet again, I don't want to give up any rights and would hate to see that spiral out of control to the point where we lose any other freedoms or somehow become subject to what is currently classified as illegal search and seizure.
    Although I'm somewhat torn on the issue, I'd vote to give Snowden a pardon. When future generations read about this in history books, I'm pretty confident that it will look like he was doing something good for the country (and the world) by whistle blowing on a group who was being dishonest.

    People being happy about weed being discussed, give me a break, these people are rich and successful, they've got great jobs that pay well, most of young people nowadays that smoke weed they only do it to fill an emptiness inside, to get rid of over thinking about a wasted list, meaningless jobs, low salaries, family problems..etc, it's a huge difference to smoke it for fun and to smoke it to log out from your daily life for awhile.

    The real question is: Is it wrong to break a bad law, or is it wrong to NOT break a bad law?
    As an American, the answer should be obvious (Its to break the bad law. Bad laws are don't change unless people are willing to break them.)
    Two wrongs don't make a right, but what Snowden did wasn't wrong. QED.
