- Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden is shedding new light on his decision to reveal classified documents about the U.S. government's mass surveillance program. In 2013, Snowden disclosed government programs that collected Americans' emails, phone calls and internet activity in the name of national security. The U.S. government charged Snowden under the Espionage Act for his actions. A congressional report said his disclosures "caused tremendous damage to national security." In his new memoir, "Permanent Record,” Snowden tells his story in detail for the first time and speaks about his life in exile in russia. Snowden, who now identifies himself as a privacy advocate, spoke with "CBS This Morning" in an exclusive U.S. TV interview. It’s edited only for satellite delays, but not for editorial content.

Terribly arrogant journalism. Why bring him on if you are unwilling to have a conversation?
Its CBS, a stone's throw from CNN... what did you expect? Real news?
It's simple really. Those "journalists" are pawns for the Government. Notice that Snowden did not choose any of them to release the information to, because it would NEVER see the light of day.
I absolutely agree. I am utterly disgusted on how they went about interviewing him as they did. This people is an example of why good journalism is dying. They call themselves journalists...they didn’t even give him time to talk. .....these people are a joke. Shame on them
Hmm. I respectfully disagree. He didn’t divert the questions or start rambling. He stayed on topic, answered eloquently, and gave very thorough responses. It’s rare these days for interviewees to expel this much valuable information. American journalism is so adherent to sensationalism. They asked some very loaded questions and didn’t seem interested in the content of what he said, but rather, “what would appeal to the public the most?”. The essence of journalism should be to exchange information. Leave the sensationalism for Hollywood. Perhaps this is why podcasts have sparked in popularity...but I digress.
I'm actually surprised that CBS, a liberal news outlet, didn't give him a pass. Agree, she was probably "coached" from above to conduct a real interview, maybe under pressure from the government, I don't know. I thought she did a great job actually. Part of a reporter's job is to not let the interviewee ride roughshod over the topic, unchecked. She called him out on whether he should get to set the terms of his prosecution, for example. Snowden is an arrogant, smooth talker. I'm glad she called him out a few times. Decent reporting for a change.
He can't even get a fair interview let alone a fair trial in America.

The Federal Govt broke the law and this person blew the whistle on the govt for breaking that law. The Federal Govt is guilty of violating their own oath to the Constitution and this man followed the oath he swore to that same Constitution. How hard is that to understand people? The law of the land is the United States Constitution. When you violate that, you are considered a criminal. The Federal Govt being a us corporation, is considered an individual by the SCOTUS. In that line then, it follows the Federal Govt is guilty of crimes against the COnstitution and all this man did was bring the people proof of that law breaking.
sbx they been guilty since the day in was created.
@Jack Bradford Easy answer.. same reason no one will be found guilty of any crime during the 2016 election. Once they are removed from the office in which they broke the law, it takes multiple causes of legal action in order to prosecute them. For example, Former director Comey will not be found guilty of any crime because he will not be brought up on charges because he no longer works for the govt. The reason they are pushing so hard against Trump is they are doing everything to find some law he broke so he can be brought up on charges since he is still the sitting President. All the people who committed the actual crimes are gone. That includes Obama, Clinton, Comey, The former attorney general (can't recall her name) and the rest of the actors who we found thru text messages were actively spying and colluding with foreign govts to sway an election as well as after the elction were trying to invalidate the winner. IF you haven't noticed there are two distinct tiers of law enforcement and crime punishment in this country. There is one tier for all politicians thats republicans and democrats, and another tier for the rest of us aka the peons or the serfs or the slaves whatever you prefer. Without us and our labor which they take a piece they find is reasonable from us, there is no govt there is no political class there are no politicians. However they take that fact for granted because they have armed themselves so deep they know no matter how hard we fought we would be brought down eventually and brought to their justice no matter how faulty it may be. This is the world we live in and the world we all pay for so like it or not we are the reason for how we live. No doubt the govt has lost all control of itself but there is little any of us can do to stop it.

I haven’t been effected by what he did, there was no harm done to anyone except the government who harms their citizens all the time
Jeez, was the CIA talking directly into their earpieces?
Exactly. I used to love and support Snowden...until I learned the truth. It was a bitter pill to swallow.
He is good though, isn't he?
"cut him off and ask why he is down with putin"
Definitely. You could see when he started talking about vietnam war, it took the three stooges some time to ask snowden to not talk about it.
He is just unflappable. Handles himself well and remains calm. Very impressive actually.

Because the mainstream networks are paid and bought by the people they are suppose to be investigating...

2. The Military Industrial Complex
3. Pharmaceutical companies
4. Oil and gas companies

Manolis Gledsodakis knowing the difference between THERE and THEIR doesn't necessarily convey a person's inherent intelligence. You are TAUGHT this difference and MEMORIZE it.
This is going to sound nuts but hear me out, the government has intelligence agents imbedded in news media all over the country. This was started as operation mockingbird years ago until they were caught, they admitted it then said they apologize and would stop doing it. To that I say lol
@@karaa7595 Funny you mention intelligence since we're talking about the intelligence community here. By that meaning of the word, it means having accurate and plentiful information, which using "there" when you should be using "their" would indicate a lack of.

@Kevin w To the extent that he revealed the government's violation of law, he is a protected whistleblower. But he did more than that. Some of the information he disclosed was information the government had a right to regard as "classified." You're not arguing that that was protected, are you?
@Kevin w Think again. The laws prohibiting the disclosure of classified information wre not passed by "corrupt legislators who bought their seat"; they were passed long ago by "the people."
The whole fair trail he was mentioning was spot on. No way the govt wants his case to be potentially won in a public jury hearing where that case can be later used to justify more exposure about the govt secrets.

@@QUICKNEASYHANDYMAN - Truth doesn't have "sides." There is the Truth..., and opinions about the truth. And then there's repeating a lie often enough that over time it becomes "truth" to gullible entitles who are willing to believe obvious lies and repeat them if enough money for extreme (unearned) personal wealth is involved.
That's how we got into the first two illegal and unconstitutional wars based on lies after 9/11 for the sake of oil corporations and the military-industrial-mercenary corporations - no country "attacked" us on 9/11, nor did any country declare war against us - the nineteen hijacker criminals were members of a guerrilla gang. BECAUSE no country attacked us, Congress could not officially declare war (US Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clause 11, ad passim), they passed the very unconstitutional AUMF '01. Obama increased the number of wars, but no one criticized him for bombing five additional countries without justification because he could utter grammatically correct sentences, as opposed to the idiotic buffoon Bush who was Cheney's puppet.

@Tun. - Because the US gov't and (mostly elected, some appointed) people in government would be embarrassed with their own words exposing them as criminals, war criminals (warmongers and those who approved torture), and liars. Snowden, Assange, and Manning have embarrassed these government officials (and military-industrial-mercenary corporations, in particular) with their own words which expose them for the lying cheats, cowards, and war criminals they are, and they can't stand it, so they want to silence them and anyone who knows what they did was the ethically and morally correct thing to do.

These CBS anchors/hosts don't have the intellectual capacity for this sort of exchange. Geez CBS, at least put up someone that is intelligent and unbiased to do an exchange like this. Regardless of right or wrong it's current and historical events, so why so biased? You're supposed to broadcast the news, not your opinions. This was uncomfortable to watch.
They wouldn't be CBS anchors/hosts if they had the intellectual capacity or the willingness to do an unbiased interview. Those people get fired - like Ed Schultz was fired just for for trying to cover the Bernie Sanders campaign. Dissident voices are not tolerated in the "free" US mainstream media. This also makes it very easy for "Evil Russian Propaganda" (tm): RT just has to give those US dissidents a show and let them do their thing. Similar concept like US propaganda outlets under the umbrella of "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty".
