The repetition throughout the three movies was intentional. It was meant to show how history tends to repeat itself.
+Paco Ramirez It was O.K. for the first two. It repeated largely because they were literally in the same time period of 1955. But by the third one, to me it felt too contrived.

You can see this in a few places in the second one, like how they immediately ditch Jennifer. Or that there is a Old Marty/Old Jennifer and 1985 Marty/Jennifer when it shouldn't be possible. Or how urgent doc wanted to change the future kids when it makes like no sense at all.
They did possibly the best thing they could have done from what they had, though.

In honor of Marty's arrival in 2015 our town changed its name for a week and had a marathon of the movies in the theater. They had a huge banner in the town center that read "Welcome to Hill Valley" and they had a replica of the car in front of the theater at arrival time.
This is balls on a filmmaker, this is perfectly cheesy, perfectly acted, perfectly edited. Everything about this scene is flawless, every film student needs to study why this scene works.

I tried to explain the Terminator timeline once, but I went cross-eyed for a week...
NEVER EVER AGAIN
I watched genisys... They didn't *erase* the timeline; they simply made it happen in an alternate timeline to before :P I just can't remember if any of the main characters actually remember the so-called "original" timeline :P
also explaining the terminator timeline is actually pretty simple as long as you don't try and make it super detailed...
US military builds an AI to help them in the event that a nuclear war is ignited, AI goes rogue and deems humanity to be self-destructive and decides to save humanity from itself by enslaving it. Humanity rebels, and a war breaks out, and after a drawn out and bloody war in which humanity is losing, one of the machines used by the AI to fight humanity is captured and reprogrammed to protect the leader of the human resistance, and is sent back in time to fulfill that mission. Then the right-hand man of the leader is sent back to make doubly certain that said leader would survive to lead humanity, by protecting the leader's mother before the leader's conception, and results in the right-hand man also becoming the leader's father. Reprogrammed machine lands in the past and immediately seeks out a set of clothing, before embarking on its (his?) mission, ending in the machine aiding the young leader and his girlfriend in reaching a nuclear bunker which has an old-fashioned radio, and once the bombs stop dropping, the tattered remains of the human military across the world call out for help, leading into the birth of the resistance against the machines. This leads to the war against the machines, and the capture and reprogramming of the machine that had helped the leader and his girlfriend to get to the bunker, in its younger form, sparking the beginning of an infinite loop of capturing the machine and sending it back, and the machine aiding the future leader and his girlfriend in attempting to prevent the rise of the AI and the machines, which always ultimately fails in the primary timeline.
In the secondary timeline (aka genisys), things are a lot different: The leader sends the machine back in time to protect his mother, and his right hand man back in time to attempt to destroy the AI, but the AI was learning every time and sending back a version of itself built from the previous version, resulting in an ever better machine, and then in time results in technological advances which culminate in robots that can seemingly bleed, removing the only thing that had marked the machines apart from the humans, but the reprogrammed machine destroys the latest incarnation of the AI to travel back through time, and the former future leader and his girlfriend destroy the servers the newest build of the AI was evolving on, before the reprogrammed machine gets an upgrade after almost sacrificing himself, resulting in him getting the upgrade the AI had meant for itself, and the cycle is ended, with 2 major differences: The war never happens, and the reprogrammed robot creeps everyone out when it smiles.

Terminator primary timeline: Humanity is in an endless spiraling timeloop of capturing and reprogramming a machine in a war against an AI that's convinced humanity will destroy itself if allowed to, and trying to protect the leader of its rebellion up until the point where the rebellion kicks off, with the AI getting better and better with every reset.
Genisys timeline: Humanity tries once to take down the AI and prevent the coming war, and fails, but succeeds the second time around, creating a timeline where the war never actually happens any more, and where the AI, formerly poised to enslave humanity, is now just a memory.
I should go into the film industry! Oh wait... I already am, LOL! I've started up a production studio, but right now there's no visual content created; our first project is all on paper. But once I'm able to get all the background stuff and the talent pool set up, I can start working on bringing our first project to life :D

I saw the first BttF probably 25 years ago, and I legitimately didn't know there were sequels until 5-10 years after that. I only actually got around to watching them over the holidays. I actually liked 3 more than 2, but the thing I found really cool about the progression is that basically everything from 1-3 takes place in a continuous time-frame. The end of 1 is exactly where 2 starts, and the end of 2 is exactly where 3 starts. Not mind blowing, but definitely cool.

I think the inspiration for Johnny be Good and the black guy becoming mayor was always going to happen, but it just introduced the concept earlier in the time line.

+notbobby125 No, they stuffed up. They threw in several different methods of time travel, yet the movie makes it's own version up. The Johnny be Good and Mayor is a closed timeloop (interstellar, time crimes, 12 monkeys etc), but the main method of time travel is the magic version, where things can change and the timeline gets magically 'updated'. They put too many methods of time travels into these movies and didn't know what they were doing and couldn't stick to one method. It's a plothole plain and simple.
It's called The Unchangable Timeline effect.
Any kind of variation to a timeline will not affect the final outcome of certain events.

No, the timeline works. The Chuck Barry in the new timeline was inspired Marty who was inspired by Chuck Barry from the old timeline who was inspired by elvis or something. The version Marty plays is completely awful so when that awful music becomes the start of rock and roll instead of the good music in the original timeline, rock and roll isn't popular. Meanwhile, due to marty, skateboarding is way more popular. So when Steve Jobs rolls around, he puts his genious into skateboarding instead of into music players. Which is why they got hoverboards, but we got iPhones.

interesting to note that the first movie has a perfectly closed time travel loop, Marty didn't mean or want to go back in time it was an accident. caused by the doc so he always goes back even with his life being better and in a world where his dad wasn't pathetic since his birth probably still hooked them up recreating the story of them getting together. Truly brilliant story.
Of all the things Back to the Future II got wrong about the future (now present), the one I am most thankful for is the fact that we're not being served by stuttering tv sets when we go into cafes :D

this may be because i've been watching this movie since i was a little kid and thus never understood a lot of the jokes, but i never thought they were insinuating that marty wrote johnny b. goode. i just thought the joke was that chuck berry's cousin was like "hey check out this music" when it was his own music? And, like, he still would have written would it not have been for marty. like, that's the only explanation that fits with the canon...
It implied he was the inspiration, not the writer of the song. Chuck wrote the song in either scenario, the Marty scenario just means he heard the "sound he was looking for" prior to finding it on his own. LOL

The timeline continuity could still hold up if you consider the theory that when you alter the past, you create a whole new different alternate timeline separate from the original one that follows the changes you made in that past, and therefore you “return” back to that new alternate timeline when youre done.
Remember, kids, if you go back in time and kill your own Grandfather, it's a Paradox, but if you go back in time and BECOME your own Grandfather, it's a Stable Time Loop!

You can gloss over Chuck Berry quite easily. Basically, he was always going to eventually come up with the song anyway but, in Marty's altered timeline, he helps the idea come along a bit quicker

BTTF has one of the most original stories and that is just one of the many things this film has to offer. I once taught a film class and one of the students picked up on my passion for the filmmaking and said well I like it but it’s not as good as Citizen Kane and I was like of course I TOTALLY agree ☺️
