      The only line I thought he delivered badly (although in fairness, I don't think anyone could've delivered a line that bad and out of place well) was when he was fighting the storm troopers and said something like "Does your foot feel funny?".

    Jyn having a stormtrooper toy is one of my favorite parts about this movie.
    The empire isn't an evil empire to the people living in that universe, it's just an oppressive government. People's lives can go on under oppressive governments, and kids will be kids. Jyn could probably barely understand the reality of the government during the possible years she had had toy, and her leaving it behind works as a metaphor to her eventually turning to the rebel cause (who mind you, would be just insurgents as seen by normal people).
    It even works perfectly well with her answer to saw guerrera, she's perfectly fine living a life in an oppressive government as long as she can stop fighting. She's figured her life would go on anyways and she can just keep living it. It makes her full turn after seeing her father's message much more poignant, as well as providing much better grounding for Diego Luna's character's qualms about her later in the film.
    So yeah, I'm honestly very disappointed in gray's take on this movie, which seems almost immature.

    You're not supposed to like the rebels, the film is trying to make you see the rebels in a worse light. Also, the rebels have always been crippled by cowardice and inactivity. They started off as the rebels, but then formed the galactic alliance against the empire. The rebels have always had a senate like structure.

    • @MrJethroha
      @MrJethroha 7 лет назад +10

      I don't think thats a good narrative choice for the star wars franchise, especially without a cast of likable heroes to make up for it. Also the political conflict kind of distracts from the military and character conflicts, which are what make Star Wars good.

    • @tmbreen37
      @tmbreen37 7 лет назад +1

      While it may not be a perfect narrative choice, this is exactly what the alliance was like in Return of the Jedi. Its what the old Rebellion was written like. Now that I think about it, this may be a glimpse into Lucas' mind and the start of the trade federation nonsense in the prequels

      《SPOILERS》The rebels are still a true democracy. It takes the actions of a bunch of brave rogues (...) to force them into action, and I love the little smile on Mon Mothma's face when the news come through!

    A major thing to consider with the Darth Vader fights is that he is fighting non-force users in Rogue One, and fighting force users in A New Hope. That is fundamentally different and the non-force users should be destroyed like tinker toys.

    I fear Grey picked up on a couple of beats in the film regarding the frustration with the Rebel bureaucracy and that the Rebels operated in a morally questionable area but missed the point of them. These weren't out of place for Star Wars or a token effort to drive the narrative of this movie but a deliberate nod to the lore built into episodes 1-3. Palpatine manipulated the hugely over bureaucratic, democratic senate in order to gain control of the Empire and it is the remnants of that flawed senate we see now trying and failing to operate decisively with democratic consensus as the Rebel alliance. In this sense the film works marvellously as a bridge between 3 and 4 and how we ended up with the gung-ho fly by the seat of their pants rebels of 4-6. It's also about time we saw that being a rebel of the state sometimes means taking out innocent loose thread informers, jeporadising or taking innocent civilians and ofttimes going on suicide missions. They maybe the good guys to us but lets not forget they are state terrorists, we're on their side because the state is fascist, not because the rebels are flawless happy go lucky heroes.
    In spite of this I agree with Grey more than Brady, the film's narrative is all over the place early on and while the action was done really well (Edwards really knows how to shoot hand to hand combat) the last 30 minutes on the planet was super predictable once the ship with Riz Ahmed blew up and the final 5 minutes of Vader was really cloying fan service.
    Also why has no one mentioned all of KS02's lines could have been straight from 'Data' in a ST TNG spec script? Not to take away from him being welcome comic relief.
    Final thought, Diego Luna's character should have died from the fall in the records room, his story should have been a regular guy in terrible circumstances doing terrible things for a good cause with an inglorious, somewhat pointless death. Instead they closed the circle on his redemption arc (yawn) by reducing Felicity Jones' agency in saving the day when all hope was lost, was just schlocky imo and had no place in what had seemed till that point to be a branching away from the series' typical campy & fun fare.
    Where's my damn standalone Ewan McGregor Obi Wan movie? I assume they can use that Tarkin CGI to merge his and Alec Guinness' faces.

  • @ocadioan
    @ocadioan 7 лет назад +8

    The opposing views are quite clear at 1:35:20. On one side, Darth Vader should be fearsome and command respect, but if he actually does anything that is worthy of respect, then he is suddenly too powerful when compared with the wimpy Darth Vader from OT(yes, Vader was a wimp in OT because they were limited in what they could do).
    In general, this review suffers a lot by both paying too much attention to very minute details and not paying attention to the canon story enough. The transmission was directly referenced in IV, and a very logical reason for the Rebels' sparse fleet power later on is exactly because they just got their entire fleet smashed. Similarly, the Rebels' terrorist behaviour is exactly the kind of behaviour that I would expect from rebels in their position, so I didn't mind it at all.

    I know this is hardly an apt comment since this was a couple of months ago but I have to defend K2, he is a great homage to HK47, the sarcastic violent assassin droid from the video game Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. He was considered a triumph by all fans of the franchise who played the game and I think the film makers wanted to channel that character into the new films and did so perfectly.

    that there was no force payoff was the whole point of that character. The director even said in an interview that the lack of characters with force powers was the biggest thing about this movie. It's showing a group of regular people, real people who don't always do what's right, they do what they have to do, taking on a force a millon times greater than themselves.

    I was definitely happy with Rogue One. I remember coming out of the cinema after TFA and being a little disappointed, It just felt like big budget fan-fiction, which is fine, but it didn't necessarily feel that much like star wars (even though it's identical to A New Hope in every single way). The exact opposite happened with RO though. The entire film screamed star wars the whole way through, which made it feel less like fanfic, and made it a lot more enjoyable. I have to say that Rogue One is definitely one of the better star wars films, I'd put it just behind Empire and A New Hope. But then, I've only seen it once so far, I'll have to re-watch before i fully decide what I think.

    I would have ended the movie at the point where they show Leia's back. Just show the rebel dude bringing her the plans. We all know it's her. No need to give us the cheesy line and photoshopped face.

    Original screenwriter Gary Whitta says “the fact that he has chosen to build his mausoleum here is a nod to the conflict in him - that he would go back to this place to reflect on what happened to the man he once was. At the same time, it’s also terrifying, and when he emerges with all of his armor, he’s Darth Vader.”

    the reason why the girl has the storm trooper doll in the beginning is because the father, the research scientist, used to work for the empire. later on in the movie, she has flashbacks of when she was a child and her father was working and babysitting her at the same time.

  • @rmeddy
    @rmeddy 7 лет назад +13

    I don't think Grey was being very charitable to the movie, it takes so many steps because actual spy work and intelligence gathering is that convoluted and takes that many steps with a lot of potential snags.
    This movie had the same problem Man of Steel did, with the whole grounded gritty deconstruction of a fantastical universe and the whole point is about unsung heroes and the fact that the good guys don't always have to be "good guys".
    It's a celebration of the chaotic neutral and chaotic good
    My problem was that the group didn't get together long enough for me to care and the Storm Troopers were still to bumbling and incompetent for my liking

    • @nutyyyy
      @nutyyyy 4 года назад

      That's basically the issue with the film is the characters are not developed well. The action is great, the film looks gorgeous but was let down by the mediocre script.
      However I understand why people enjoyed the movie and why I didn't. If you like the world and background of star wars then this is the movie for you. The action was great and very cinematic but there was no heart to the film and it doesn't stand alone.

    Donnie Yen's character used the force several times. Scanned the energy of the of the guy who was going to kill Jyn Urso's father, and shot planes out of the sky while blind in that same battle. Plus, of course, walking through the firestorm blind and slowly. He is no Jedi so he was not able to do any Jedi level tricks. I also think his Crack shot buddy is also force sensitive, he never misses. Lastly, Donnie Yen has an amazing body of work as an actor, one of my favorites.

    I loved it because it focused on what would normally be just supporting characters, the non-space wizards. The real soldiers of the war. Especially the part where they described those who volunteered disobey orders and go steal the plans. Those who did the dirty work for the rebellion. Assassins, saboteurs. The people that history forget.

  • @musikSkool

    I always thought that when they said many people died to get the plans for the Death Star I assumed that they had undercover rebels who infiltrated the base over the course of months, or even years, slowly working their way to finding useful secrets that could bring down the empire. It was a HUGE letdown when it was a specific mission that knew from the start exactly what they wanted, and they went in guns blazing. It was cooler when I thought it was cloak and dagger and occasionally a rebel spy was discovered and executed, and eventually someone found a way to get an advantage over the empire. An open-ended question and a journey of discovery is a lot more satisfying a mystery than having a plan from the start.
    As for the planet names, I didn't like them. I think that showing a planet without telling us anything about it is more mysterious. We don't have to know where we are or what is happening, the next scene will introduce thematic elements and maybe someone will drop the name of the planet they are on, or maybe they just want to get off the planet and drop the name of where they want to go.
    The difference between a rebel, a terrorist, and a vigilante is a rebel sees an injustice done by the government so they fight the government and try to win. Rebels usually avoid killing innocents, their target is government officials and they try to take out large targets until there is nothing left of the oppressive government left. Terrorists respond haphazardly, killing innocents and guilty alike. They don't care who dies. They just want to make the enemy afraid to go about their daily lives. They have no plans on taking specific targets and almost never actually win. Vigilantes fight injustice by targeting the direct people causing the problem, and they are very careful to not kill innocent people in the process. The reason why Batman isn't a terrorist is that he doesn't use a car bomb to kill the Joker, randomly killing people that may be near the bomb. The reason why George Washington was a rebel and not a terrorist is because he didn't blow up random rich people's houses in England, he fought the redcoats that were on American soil. The reason why terrorists are criminals is they aren't targeting the people oppressing them, they are targeting random citizens. If you want a country to stop destroying the economy in your country, don't blow up a bus, lobby for government and change your international trade laws. Or find out what your citizens are buying from other countries and start local production of it so they at least have the option of buying it locally.
    Thinking of all this, the actual religion that the terrorists are claiming to follow says "an eye for an eye", if one person kills another, you kill that one person. If someone from another country blows up a bus, that religion doesn't say to blow up one of their busses. Under their religions law code you would only kill the person that blew up the bus. If you went and blew up one of their random busses you would not be bringing the original perpetrator to justice. Random is not justice. It seems more like what is happening is that people of that religion can't understand their own religious laws and are attacking busses in countries like Russia. It is common knowledge that Russia's ruling style is to make your enemies afraid to oppose you. Then I suspect that secret Russian agents are blowing up busses in the Terrorists' countries and the news reports it as terrorist attacks too. Now if the actual terrorists looked at their religious law code they would see that if a person commits a murder, you kill just them, but on the other hand, if another country kills a lot of your citizens, you declare actual war on that country and wipe them out. Their religion does not actually endorse randomly killing innocent people. Of course, if people don't follow their own religious code, and their god doesn't punish them for it, then clearly their god isn't real. A real God would punish people that are killing innocent people in his name, he even said to protect innocent people. For the sake of his reputation, at the very least. Now if they know that, and that is the reason why they aren't starting a war, because they know their God would let their enemies kill them, because they have been killing innocent people. Well if that is the case, then we should be able to logically ban any religions that claim their god doesn't want us to kill innocent people, but they do it anyway, and their god doesn't punish them for breaking his rules. Really, any religion whose god doesn't punish them for breaking his rules clearly doesn't have a real god. Is there a religion whose god actually punishes people for breaking rules?

    The sniper guy changed his mind about assassinating Erso after he saw him being reprimanded by the director guy. From the looks of the dispute on the platform, it looked like he wasn't on the same page as the Empire and it lent credibility to Jyn's story. So he felt that he probably shouldn't murder the guy.
    Jyn had a change of heart because she saw how important the rebel cause was to her dad--so much so that he gave up his life. She felt it was important for her to be a part of that purpose too.

What more to you want for the price of admission? What I take away from all the negative critic is "I want to have the same childlike experience that I had in 1977, 1980 and 1983. I want to be true to the original but new and fresh. I want it to be true to canon but not in your face fan service" News Flash, you are in your 30's or 40's jaded by episode 1, 2 & 3 and now that you are stuck in middle aged suburbia, or fat with a beard in mums basement you don't like change! When you talk about how the rebels suddenly seemed competent, you have to remember that Scarif was one of the first major battles for the rebel alliance. This was them after years of collecting what they can and planning, and the Empire hadn't depleted their forces yet because they never had the chance to. The good pilots probably slowly died off as their armies ran out of materiel.

    Cheers guys, and merry Christmas! you will probably here this a lot, but the movie went through very heavy reshoots, recuts, and editing a half year before its release. many of its problems I think stem from the fact that it was a movie filmed in the genre of war and spy movies, but was later cut by different people trying to make a more like a straight Star Wars movie like Empire Strikes Back.

    41:40 we saw the predecessors of Star Destroyers on the surface of planets in Episode 2 when clone troopers were loading up. Also, some Star Destroyers entered high atmosphere on Hoth but they couldn't attack the base because of the shields, that's why the walkers were sent

    One thing that really stuck with me.
    In the Rebel fleet VS Imperial fleet battle, You never see any of the Star Destroyers fire their lasers. Maybe I remember wrong, but after a few minutes I was watching for it, and never saw it. It was as if the big ships on both sides were just set dressing for over the top xwing/tie action...

    In A New Hope, there are several lines of dialogue that specifically claim that the death star plans were beamed to the ship via transmissions by rebel spies, so the canon requires that some transmissions had to be a part of the process. When you think about the fact that it took a hugely powerful transmitter to send the death star plans out, I think its reasonable to think that many ships could receive the plans, but didn't have the power themselves to re-transmit them. I think you also have to assume that the rest of the rebel ships were destroyed or taken control of by the empire, and that only the Tantive IV escaped, so I don't see a problem with the way the death star plans were moved around.

    If they'd kept the writing and editing the same but dropped the place names I think it actually might have been better. The problem with the words is that they give importance to places that have very little importance. Its sufficient to know that these are distinct places and then just let us forget about it. Similarly, we probably don't even need to know all the character's names, we just need to see them a little less. Max Rebo is on screen for less than a minute and people somehow found out his name... same for Boba Fett. We just need to know 'ninja guy', 'samurai guy' and if the rest of the movie is strong enough then i'll look up their names, just use them less.

    So a note on the whole 'Mount Doom Castle' thing: Vader DOES have a castle. The expanded universe shows him having several personal bases, the primary one being a castle (though it was on a planet of perpetual acid rain rather than Mustafar). The original trilogy and Episode 7 even had early drafts and concept art to show it off.

    criticisms like this are why star wars movies can't evolve and be good again. the first trilogy worked because it was a simple story as old as time. but as much as Disney would like to you can't just remake it endlessly.
    the fact that people are so averse to any moral or storytelling grey areas is really holding star wars back. Finn was just the empires garbage man (with extremely intimate knowledge of something way outside his jurisdiction) who deserts on his first no. he's never done anything bad he will have to come to terms with. "The rebel leaders can't agree, that's unbelievably stupid bureaucracy!" or maybe it's leaders having valid disagreements on the proper allocation of crucial war resources?
    "the rebels are dicks in rogue one!" is this really a surprise to People? good people have done bad things for a cause for millenia.

      At no point in the original trilogy does Darth Vader hack people to death with his lightsabre, he has no need to. When he enters the ship in a New Hope the dirty work has been done and he is charge. You don't need to show him killing people to understand he in control.

    A friend saw the movie in both 3D and 2D and noticed that Tarkin looks way better in 2D. He thought the 3D version was too crisp and in-focus and the camerawork didn't look real, but in the 2D version this wasn't as apparent.
