I’m so glad they had the biological vs “real” parentage discussion as the vocabulary of it has always bothered me. My mother is the only person I know I share DNA with as she was adopted, and I never knew or met the man that impregnated her but I was raised from the time of my birth by her second boyfriend, my dad. People always ask things like if I knew my “real” dad, and I was always like yea well obviously, he’s that guy that loves my mom and me and works hard to protect and care for us; and his brothers are my uncles and their children are my cousins and etc, but people are (I think) weirdly obsessive ‘oh no I meant your REAL dad’ presumably real meaning some rando living in Winnipeg that used to date my mom in high School? My dad had another child with my mom, my (half I guess? he seems like a whole person to me) brother, it bothered me a lot when he was born that people would ask my dad how it felt to ‘finally be a father’ as of course, I’m not his “real” daughter either, but thankfully he’s of the same mind of it as me and would remind them of my existence. I was always slightly worried that my view was just skewed on this due to my particular family circumstance so, it’s comforting hearing someone else agree somewhat.

      Ninjozata cool name.
Totally makes sense. If I found out today that I was adopted or that I was mistakenly swapped at the nursery or something like that it wouldn't change a thing for me.
Family has very little to do with genes and a lot to do with love, support and caring for each other

    • @lonyaidaniel

I totally agree with what you wrote about being a real dad and daughter!
May I ask you how old were you when they told you that your dad was not your genetical dad and how it affected you? I am curious because I agree with the podcast that those kind of moments are shown in TV to be far more dramatic than they likely are. If this question isn't adequate, please ignore it!
      Thank you for your answer!

If everyone cared most about their own genes everyone would be like European royals and inbreed as well as be cowardly and never brave their own life for another's in battle for example. Also, on another note, They have Dulles Day every year and I went there once and it was neat. You got to see a number of planes on display and such, but also they took you on one of the “Mobile Longes” on a tour around the airport about there expansions and such, such as their then expansion to handle A380s, and it was generally interesting. Tho Dulles has no shortage of dungeons.

Seriously though, those "sound triangles" and "hallelujah rays" are motion lines, to indicate the thrusting of your hands _into_ the air, in celebration, like in sports when your team does the thing.
I wouldn't necessarily say the double clap interpretation is wrong though, as it is a common result of multiple people doing this together, when used in response to itself it may be implicitly interpreted as a double clap

    • @captainufo4587

They're in the wrong place. Source: I've been a professional comics artist for 15 years.
Motion lines follow the movement, they don't anticipate it. That is, if you want motion lines that signify thrusting the hands up, you put them UNDER the hands, not above. And not at an angle, but straight in the direction of the movement. These are above the hands, and also disposed radially from a point that is between the hands. This kind of things usually indicate either sound, or a physical or metaphorical hit/impact.
I can accept that it was meant to be motion lines, but it only means that the designer who created them has no idea of the language s/he's trying to use.

I live in the non-voting District of Columbia. Most of us loathe the idea of going to Dulles in part because it's so far away with no public transit and in part because of the subterranean security line. And I have TSA PreCheck.
One thing you may not have noticed is that you can walk - underground of course - to Terminal A/B without using the newish "train." The tunnel is not as interesting as the "neon tube" at O'Hare but it's certainly quieter than the train and has moving sidewalks if you don't want to stroll the whole distance.

On the point of adoption and intentional conception...I think I feel the opposite way that gray does. While I myself am not adopted I have close family that is, and based on their experience in my family I would say, I wouldn’t care at all if I was adopted, as long as the people who raised me WANTED me. But if I found out that I was not wanted, but they kept me anyway because they felt the had to or something, that would be far more hurtful to me.

I remember one of their tutorials is about increasing youtube view count by trying to replicate tv shows??? Telling you to make cliff hangers, write episodic videos, characters, etc. Not only is that the exact opposite of why people use this app in the first place, making such videos on a yt monetization (or lack of thanks to demonetization and unfair YT pays) would completely murder you, they even showed their channel analytics as an example, and it doesn't even perform half as well as a single reddit text-to-speech video made by someone with 5 subs.

    Regarding the parents conversation:
    1) If you live in a culture where it is presumed that your parents are your biological parents unless otherwise stated, then yes, it is 100% a deception if the people who raise you don't tell you that they're not your biological parents.
    2) Your discussion about "why someone would care" if they're adopted or intended, is kind of moot, because you're both extreme outliers with regards to how your childhoods shaped you, so it's to be expected that you view this topic differently from the norm. You're both coming at it from the extremely narrow perspective of people who are not only successful, but _unusually_ successful, and happy, and were raised by people who love you, and who you love, and who you have a good relationship with to this day, and who presumably did a good job raising you, and who had a decent amount of money, etc. etc. etc. That's a sadly rare combination of traits. "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." From all that you've said about your childhoods and families, it seems you had happy families; so you would have a hard time conceiving of the million and one ways that an unhappy or even just slightly-less-happy family life could lead one to care about one's parentage. If you watch a show like Long Lost Family (or something similar), you might gain a greater understanding of why this matters to some people, or at least what leads to that type of thinking.

Uh, Im a bit surprised at that "who the parents are" discussion given you both read and commented on Guns, Germs and Steal so much. Ive actually read that and other Jared Diamond books because of that... so, a few things :
_obviously people care what happens to people they are blood related to, it's in their genes to do so, because it is in any individuals evolutionary interests to protect one's offspring and/or those that share the largest bits of your genes. So children over brothers and sisters over cousins over tribe over strangers.
As "civilized" humans, we use our modern sensibilities to override these instincts to some extend, some do so more than others.
_both in past and present royal families, bloodlines matter ALOT, for realz. They are the legitimacy-givers. With doubt on who made the kid, the entire kingdom is at risk of losing faith in its ruling family. Scandal/medium deal in today's Brexit-dominated UK, potentially devastating in kingdoms with stronger and more politically relevant monarchies.
_GoT is, as Grey said, medieval fantasy. It follows (or used to follow, when it was still book-based) the rules of medieval Europe's courts and monarchies. For the above mentioned reasons, bloodlines matter ALOT. For any noble house as much as on their own scale. Factor in that there's multiple reasons to care that your offspring / your parents are actually who they are supposed to be because : 1- the biological reason all individuals of a species have ; 2- the legitimacy reason discussed above ; 3- the "gang reason" of gaining and keeping respect Grey mentions. All of these combine in a world like GoT (or history's medieval England or France etc...)

So between genetics and lineage, sports and missed moments, and RUclips and "internet beefs" (Brady)...
What's with the plant cell background... I mean it's a podcast so I don't imagine many are really looking, but I am curious?

I'm sorry Brady but the missing of momentous sporting comebacks on the Liverpool end shouldn't really be viewed as unlucky, if you were a big enough fan you would've watched the game!

    By infidelity
It sounds like you're trying to see who of your parents cheated on them
    But like
Only the mum could lie about that if the pops doesnt know
    But that's skewed
Since it wont tell you how often the male cheated
    But I think
    By infidelity
They mean lying to their kid?

Grey sometimes exhibits a complete lack of imagination!? If you could ask tim cook one question... 'oh i wouldn't ask a question cause he wont answer'. Its a hypothetical! And hypothetically just imagine tim cook was given a truth serum and you have the opportunity to learn some secret. bah

    Are they live streaming?!

    • @v4lgrind
      @v4lgrind 5 лет назад +2

No, premieres are pre-recorded but published as a stream. Brady sometimes shows up in the chat while it streams.

But it's a little red box in the corner that looks just like the live stream box! If only some forward-thinking podcast had addressed this issue!

I have to agree that the "you were an accadent" talk is completely irrelevant. Both my sister and I were unplanned and neither of us give a shit.. But our mom seems to thinks it should matter for some reason.
