Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn, an HONEST Review

- Red Heart All in One Granny Square Yarn automatically changes colors on every round for granny squares. But does it really work?
In this honest review video, I'll give you a full rundown of what it's like to work with the new Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn. The premise of this yarn is you can create granny squares automatically with nice color changes without having to change the colors yourself.
The advantage of automatic color changes is you won't have extra yarn ends to weave in at the end. The yarn is self-striping and contains specific lengths of 5 different colors, which means, at least in theory, all you need to do is follow their granny square pattern and the colors should line up correctly on each round.
But does it really work? And how easy is it to work with? Well, check out the video for the complete answers to those questions!

I would much rather weave in hundreds of ends than deal with that mess. Thank you for reviewing the yarn for us 🙏🏼😊
Happy to help!
I would agree. At least with regular pooling you only need to pull out a few stitches. To pull out a whole round and try again would be very frustrating.
I pretty much figured this yarn wasn’t worth the effort. Thanks for being our guinea pig so we didn’t have to tear our hair out! 🥰
Happy to help! 🤣
I made a Granny Square blanket 5 years ago. All Red Heart Super Saver variegated yarn. I used the JAYG method to attach the squares, and it took me only two weeks to make a twin sized blanket. It came out beautiful. I used black to outline each square. The yarn did all the work and very few ends to weave in.
Yes! I love the join as you go method. I end up crocheting over the ends too, so I agree with having limited ends to weave in anyway.
I am new to crochet. What is the JAYG method?
@@lisaarmstrong3428 JAYG stands for "Join As You Go". Connecting the granny squares to each other as you go instead of making each one and then connecting them.
@@brendaconway4949 wow thanks for taking the time.👍🙏❤️🇨🇦
@LisaArmstrong. JAYG stands for Join As You Go. It is a fantastic technique, and I learned it from Fiber Spider and another Content Creator who's name I cannot recall right now. Or you can try searching for the method in the RUclips search box.
I agree with your review 100% I had to try like 15 times to get all these colors in the right place. I crochet all the time and I could have made several granny squares by the time I tried this one 15 times. I want to be able to pick up my yarn, watch TV, and crochet with my favorite needles. I ended up giving this yarn to a local library for a children’s yarn club.
Thank you so much for being honest. 🧶
Happy to help! I felt the same thing about the time factor!
Couldn't you have just used like any other variegated yarn?
I honestly think this yarn would be pretty great for newbies especially, because it will show them how to monitor their tension immediately and visually. It would be great practice to establish muscle memory particularly if you made several skeins worth of squares for a sweater or afghan. Speed, especially when you are learning, should never be a priority. Learning to be consistent with your tension should top speed.
I honestly disagree that this would be good for beginners. I’m hearing the same issues across the board from crocheters at all different levels. It is nearly impossible to get the tension correct and it’s extremely frustrating to work with.
I see your vision, but I really think rather than teaching new crocheters how to monitor tension, it would just completely frustrate them and convince them to put the hook down. Maybe forever. If it’s frustrating and difficult for an expert or at least someone with many years of experience, I generally don’t find it to be a good beginner project.
I think it would be terribly frustrating for beginners (it would be frustrating for ME, and I love crochet and have been doing it for decades). I think it would be more apt to turn them off from crochet than to help them.
@@snospmoht3252 as someone who is new to crochet this is exactly why I like it. It’s helping me learn
I saw this yarn, and was curious, and I appreciate you “road testing” it. I think I’ll just stick to any other self striping yarn, as my tension varies from day to day due to disability. This yarn would drive me nuts! The colors are pretty, I must say! ❤ 🧶
Yep, exactly, tension is the key with this yarn!
Good point. I don't have a disability but my tension varies with my moods too.
I made a throw with this yarn and i found that if you use a 5 mm hook and make the granny square, not by the pattern on the sleeve, but make it like a normal granny squire then the yarn works for you.
This is why I won't buy this yarn. I can do without the frustration on what is supposed to bring me joy. 😊
Yeah, my husband was getting a chuckle out of me actually throwing down yarn. Never seen me do that before!
You could use it as a self striping yarn on other projects. Which is what I might do. The colors are gorgeous which is why I might use it.
@@naztazia I'm thinking it could be really interesting for mitered squares or knitting. Knitting in the round, squares or just flat for a sweater. I'd bet something really nice could be worked out.
@@ruthyk7083 I was thinking, a crochet planned pooling scarf or blanket might work really well with this yarn instead of struggling with granny squares. Knitting would bring out the colors in a different way too.
Same! Looks like a pain to work with. Great concept, and it does seem to work for some people, but if you don’t have the exact right tension (and start at the exact right place, and leave the exact length of tail at the end) it seems like more “work” than fun to use.
This is the kind of person I am: I looked at all the different color combinations of this yarn, chose the ones I liked then went through my stash and chose those colors and make my own granny squares 😂 a lot cheaper and less of a headache
Yes, so many lovely color combinations too that way!
Yes!
I already knew I wasn’t buying any, thank you for being honest and showing us
Too much trouble who has time for this?! Not me! I do not want all that anxiety and i have no patience at all i dont want to be stressed out trying to make a granny square with the yarn so im sure glad i never bought it was going to but wanted to see the reviews and boy am i glad i did see them. Thanks! ❤
Happy the video could help out a bit!
I completely get your frustration with this yarn. There’s a lot of frogging and re-doing! For me though, I hate weaving in ends so much and find it so stressful that I’d much rather undo and redo a few times. I’m always so concerned about the ends coming undone that it makes the process much more stressful for me, so for me personally adjusting my tension a few times is much more peaceful! I totally get why for a lot of people they’d rather just weave in some ends
Those are excellent points. Thank you!
Oh no, I would NOT have the patience for all that! Might buy the yarn and just use it as a variegated thing maybe. Thank you much for the honest review Donna! 🥰
The yarn has lovely colors and would be perfect for striped scarves and blankets.
@@naztazia I agree 100%!
I knit and they make beautiful baby afgans.
I appreciate this review! Ive been seeing this yarn everywhere and figured it probably wasn't worth the hassle and looks like I was right lol
It was fun to give it a try. On the positive side I think the colors they chose are gorgeous!
Hello, thank you for your review. I too purchased this yarn and became quite frustrated with myself. I thought it was my crocheting tension. Thanks again for an honest review
Happy to help! It's definitely not us!
Just came from a video with a crochet beginner who had to size up their hook just to get the pattern to work. I even came across a review from someone who has been crocheting for decades get frustrated with the yarn. Really like the review.
Happy to help!
Thank you for this honest review! I was going to try it and if YOU struggled and even though I've been crocheting for almost 50 years, I think I will skip it, unless someone buys it for a project they want me to make for them. Happy Holidays!
Glad it was helpful! Happy Holidays to you too!
I can see buying 1 skein to try, and see if you happen to luck out and have the perfect tension it seems to require. If not, it could just be used as a color-changing yarn in another non-granny-square project (maybe held together with a strand of one-color yarn. Or used with moss stitch.)
Great video!! I agree with you 💯!! It's such a frustrating yarn!
Right?!
Thanks for the honest review Donna. I didn't think it would flow smoothly because everyone has different tension ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this review. While I’ve been crocheting for about 5 years I’ve yet to muster the courage to do a granny square. I thought this might do the trick but after watching the video I don’t think it’s for me. Thank you and love your videos! ❤
Always happy to help!
❤Naztazia love all your videos, and thank you 😊 for taking the time in sampling the Red Heart all in one colors. I was going to buy this weekend but due to harsh cold weather here in NYC. I don't like to go out. I want to do the Granny Squares you lovely do . Since I've told you previously I was rusty on my skills , I had stopped crocheting a little after 10 years years ago. The crocheting fascinates me. Luckily I only got to finish a baby blanket inwhich I made to a twin size bed. It brought joy to me making it and my oldest daughter has enjoyed it ever since. Again, thank you for your expertise and also letting know to see whether if the hook size was at fault. Take care 🙂 ❤, and God bless you 💖,. ❤😂.
Thank you for your honesty. I was wondering about it. Me I like to make giant granny square. And it probably wouldn't work with the hexagon, but the colors look fantastic. Thanks Donna
Yep, I completely agree with the beauty of the colors!
Thank you for the review! I didn't know this yarn existed and while I've been yarning for 7 years this is my first time getting into granny squares. I see the frustration from pooling these skeins and accept that for what it is. If I pass my real estate exam then I'll pick this yarn up as a congrats to myself.
OMG, I passed! Looks like I'm making granny squares!! 😁
@zimoria. This yarn just recently came out which is why you may not have known about it. After watching Naztasia'a review, I believe that I'd never be able to work with it. I'd get so frustrated with having to "police" my tension & change hooks for every round!!! Lovely colors, but the idea needs some more thought.
Thank you! As soon as I saw this yarn the word “gimmick” popped into my mind. All we really want is nice, slow gradient yarn with smooth transitions, but nooo, let’s do abrupt colour changes so if you mess up it looks awful. It would be nice if yarn companies actually listened to what customers want!
You're right, I love slow gradient yarn!
It is unbelievable that this yarn can do granny squares such as this!!! Wow!!! 😮
Thanks for the review Donna!
I bought 2 colorways of this yarn to try, knowing that there's a learning curve to working with it. The colorways aren't anything like what I'd choose myself, but i thjnk it will be fun to experiment with. Each skein only makes 14-15 squares, so a full-sized throw would be extremely expensive compared to regular RH super-saver.
Great points, thank you!
Thank you for this review. I will pass this yarn up I rather just weave in ends because I have a loose tension, and I don't want to keep frogging what I did..😊
Thank you for giving this example. I was very curious about this yarn. I have a lot of patience, but I’m afraid my patience would wear out if I used this yarn. It’s sweet that the manufacturer was trying to create a yarn that would make our crocheting easier. However, because we all crochet different tensions, this was bound to not work for many of us.
You're right! It would offer solution to weaving in ends, but alas, I think it needs to go back to the drawing board!
Thank you for the review on this yarn. I got me a ball of this and I accomplished crocheting my granny square without all the chains. I used an I crochet hook. When I followed the directions on the yarn, I kept having to redo a row. But crocheting without all of the chains worked for me! I hope this helps.😁
Wonderful! Thank you for letting us know!
So, no chains between clusters on the sides? How many chains in the corners? 2? (When I do GS with no chains between edge clusters, I ch2 in the corners).
Thank you for being honest about this yarn. It's just another gimmick that will find its way to the clearance rack. I'm pretty sure that it's less time consuming to cut and weave ends for color changes than to try to match gauge with this yarn.
Happy to help!
I love the blue, white, seafoam black color. All the shops seem to sell out of the colors I like. Love your neon color choices in the majority of your posts.
A terrific video! This is one product that works ”in theory”, but seems like more of a hassle than a help.
I agree! 💯
Thank you for an HONEST review about this. It helps when reviews are free of conflicts of interest ❤. Thanks Donna
Exactly! There are advantages of being a self-sufficient independent designer!
Thank you! I've seen this online and looked for it locally. Haven't found it yet. But I will. Thank you for showing how you worked through your color changes. Happy New Year
Happy to help! At least here in Pennsylvania, my local Joanns had a large display of it.
That was a roller-coaster of a clip .. very entertaining. Hee Hee .. happy it worked for you in the end .. all be it a tad frustrating. Looks lovely ..✌🏻🌷🌿
Glad you enjoyed it Thank you!
I appreciate your review. When I’m working on a project, especially a granny square, I want to relax. The idea of having to constantly change hook size isn’t worth my energy nor my money.
So true!
Even tho its a frustrating process, the yarn colours are so pretty😍
Seems interesting, I'd give it a try if it was available in my country. Markers along the yarn would help a lot, so that after each side of the square you know if it's going as it should or too tight or too loose. Fold each colour of the yarn in half and then half again and add markers.
That certainly would be a way to make it work!
I don't think my nerves could handle this yarn. I don't mind sewing in my yarn tails. This way, my frustration level will calm. Thank you for sharing.
Happy to help! I know exactly what you mean too!
Thank you. All tensions are not the same.
Blessings throughout the new year
Thank you! I fully agree! Happy New Year to you too!
I tried this yarn out this past weekend and LOVED it, I guess I have the tension the company was shooting for? (Pretty tight tension that I change about to get the end result I want) but I knew some people would have difficulties with it. It’s not made for everyone and the company is trying to make it for everyone. Greatly appreciate you being honest and showing genuine downsides!!
That's awesome you got it to work quickly! Yeah, I felt important to set expectations over the wide variety of crochet tensions out there.
Hi! Thanks for another awesome video! I recently saw this yarn & was interested and glad to see a review
happy to help out!
Thank you for the unfiltered honesty, Donna. To be quite frank, it seems it would take longer to frog and re-do each round vs. weaving in tails. It's a good idea in theory, maybe not so much in practice.
Exactly!
Thanks for this great review. I can see this not being around very long.
Love your nails. 👍
Thank you! 💅
I have been so excited to try this yarn but I have also tried like eight times to get the right tension/length/hook to make this work out. I have been feeling like I’m insane and incapable because I just can’t get it to match up right 😢 I’m glad I’m not the only person who has struggled with it
Yep, the colors are really pretty, but, the instructions for the granny square have to be adjusted to your tension for it to actually work.
Thank you for the unbiased review. I appreciate the video. Very helpful information. 😊😊😊
Always happy to help!
It seems like a lot of work. I think I will stick to weaving in ends. Thank you for reviewing this yarn 🧶
I’m so glad you did this review, it would’ve annoyed the heck outta me😂
I think this would be interesting to someone. I really enjoy using my straps making granny squares. Thanks for sharing.
I'm going to leave that yarn at the store. I'm not a big granny fan and I don't have the patience. Good idea but you have to figure out the tension and hope it's the first try lol😮 thanks for sharing.
I completely understand!
It's a wonderful idea for a yarn, but everyone has a unique way of crocheting, and it's hard to make it user-friendly for everyone. I was so excited when I saw this because the colors are so pretty. But I think I'll just stick to my own way of doing granny squares.
That would be like playing "yarn chicken" for every single round! No thank you, the stress would put me over the edge!
It's exactly what it is right at the very end of each round. I had to explain what yarn chicken was to my husband when I kept saying that!
Thanks for the review. I would much rather weave in the ends than deal with this yarn.
Love love love this yarn. Here's the secret: ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!
Hi,Naztazia, thank you for this honest response on this yarn. 😊😊, at least when I go to purchase it.(and I will,) I will have a good idea 💡 what to expect and some easy ways to handle it. Thanks again.😊 see you on the tube.
Exactly! Happy to help with setting expectations. It's definitely a fun yarn to at least try once!
Answered the question of whether I'm going to buy this yarn. Thanks for the review. If it works, terrific. It is doesn't work, boo.
Happy the review could help!
That is why I prefer to do my own color change & it’s always easy to crochet in the ends as you go or weave in after each square is my way or it becomes a headache at the end of the project.
Went to my local Joanne’s today looking for the new yarn. Couldn’t find any so asked the lady in the dept and she said it was in the back and hadn’t been put out just. I went online and ordered from Joanne’s and get 2 of the new colorways. Looking forward to the yarn arriving and starting on the squares.
I can see there will be a learning curve involved. I’m still anxious!
It's definitely fun to try! Please let us know how it worked out for you.
I've done some planned pooling blankets so I'm familiar with changing tension to get the results needed. It is a little challenging but I'm now on my fourth skein, so I guess it's going pretty well lol. I got it at JoAnn when it was on sale and I had a 25% off coupon on top of that. I was NOT going to pay that original price!
I wish they would try or at least try some sunflowers colors! Even different flowers squares. If they could get it right! You did a wonderful review on the yard. I probably would have a hard time with it to so idk yet if I’m gonna try but I’m sure I will! Hope you had a Merry Christmas Happy New Year 🎊
That would be awesome if they did the sunflowers and roses in the middle!
I bought 4 skeins of cyber leaf before reading reviews and have only gotten through 1 square. I had to keep taking breaks so I didn't get frustrated. I love the idea but I think it's not for me. I think I'm going to just use it for a hexi cardigan.
Thanks for your feedback!
Hi Donna! It seems as though everyone who reviews this yarn has had the same comments about adjusting hook size amd tension. It has made me not want to trt it at all. Maybe just to use it as a striping yarn, but for the price, I doubt it!😂
You make great points! Thank you!
Hi Donna that would drive me crazy having to rip to get right tension .I think I will stick with changing and choosing colours myself thanks for the demo.💖💖
Happy to help!
Nice for newer crocheters that doesn't have a lot of stash. A good learning tool as well.
I actually think it would be very frustrating to use for a newer crocheter.
I bought some of the yarn, but I have not had a chance to work with it yet - - I will definitely have to tighten up my tension
Thank you for your honest review. I have not seen anyone get it right the first time. This will be a no go for me.
Always happy to help!
Thank you for showing us how this works up. Definitely not buying this yarn. Who needs more frustration/aggravation in their life?🤯 Not me. Paint the yarn, I love it🤣Thank you again 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Can’t wait to try mine out. Got the yarn at JoAnns! Thanks for all the tips and tricks!
Hope you like it!

I appreciate your review Donna. I'd rather stick with regular yarns vs paying a crazy price for these fad yarns. It was a fairly cool idea until I saw the reality of your struggles. I'd love to know how many testers they actually had LOL. For the price, and struggles many will likely have, I'd be surprised if this is a yarn that'll still be around for years to come.
happy to help!
and....I was just going to buy a few skeins of that yarn - changed my mind, thank you
Happy to help!
omg paint the spot of miscolor!! I thought of that too! well i went with another technique tighten my tension, drop a dc stitch a few times , drop the one chain inbetween and two chains in the corner 🤣💗
Thank You for sharing. It's great to see that adaptation skills are still needed and valued. 🎉😂😅
Happy to help! Yes, adaptation skills - I like that term to describe it!
Donna you make me laugh 😂. Thanks for the honest review. Love those colors.
Always happy to help! 🤩
Thanks for your review
I rather just join in new colors because my tension always changes
Love your nails !!
Thank you! 💅
I'm in Australia and have purchased this yarn in mills ends bags no knowing what this yarns purpose was. I used it to make a cardi. I bought it a couple of months ago
Awesome and clear information. Thank you very much, and a happy crocheting, good year to you 🙏🌺
Happy new year!
I just bought some of this yarn, I'm hoping I'll have some hair left from frustration lol. Thank you for the review, because I was wondering how I was going to make it work
Good luck! Just kidding, you'll do fine with it. Actually, please post your experience after using it!
I would love to try it out it would make beautiful granny squares bags thanks for sharing
If you can get this to work the colors are absolutely gorgeous and would make an incredibly beautiful granny square bag!
@@naztazia yes it would most definitely 👍🏼 iam gonna try btw love all your tutorials ❤️
I took the plunge and bought 6 of three colors. I hate the chain one in between clusters so I used a 6mm and skipped the chain 1. Did the chain 2 in the corners and yes, it’s a bit fiddly but I have had success with my squares. Sometimes I need to adjust but overall I’m into it. I think I paid 7.12$ a piece at Joann Fabrics because they were on a pretty good sale like two days ago if price is a deterrent for anyone.
Awesome! And yes, Joanns is where I got mine, between their sales and coupons!
Thanks Donna!
Happy new year Donna to you and your family, hoping 2024 will be a great year for you.❤🌹🌹🎉🎉
Thank you! Happy new year to you too!!
love how you kept it consise. i was thinking of buying this yarn, but now i definitely know not to. thank you!
Great review! It sure helped me make up my mind about this yarn. It is a great idea in theory, but I'm sure it wouldn't work for me as I am simply a beginner. Blessings from Texas!❤
Glad it was helpful!
I agree you will definitely have to play around with tension to get it to work the way its supposed to, and it could get frustrating.
Absolutely! 💯
Mahalo for this review. I was very excited to get my hands on this but unfortunately they are sold out in my area. My tension varies when I crochet anything so I may put this on the back burner and just do granny squares the old fashioned way.
Happy to help!
That's exactly what I was afraid of. It's not worth the almost $10 a skein. Thank you for sharing this!!
I had no problem with this yarn got it right after two tries and now I have used several colors and have had no problem. A lot of people are giving this a bad rap. I have also seen a lot of people not leaving the suggested four inch tail when starting, and doing granny squares the way they want- instead of how it is directed , so in that case it will not work out.
Thank you for sharing. Looked at red heart website last week, and the price was $11.99 a skein. Way too much for my money! The price may come down, but you still only get the 255 yards. Time will tell.
Thanks for sharing that info!
This is pretty much exactly what I assumed would happen when I heard about this yarn. It seems like if they were going to try something like this, they should have done a long gentle fade between the colors to give people more leeway in exactly where the round ended. If *you* can't keep the tension absolutely perfect to be able to get every round to work, there's no way an average crocheter is going to even come close.
Yes! That makes more sense. I wouldn't mind the yarn blending as I'm going between rounds. What was frustrating for me was when the bright blue yarn started running out and you had this bright white yarn already starting. That was way too noticeable for me.
I’m struggling with this yarn. I have tried 4-5 different hooks and on the 4th round it is off again. This is so much frustrating that I’m not happy with this yarn. And I bought 5 skeins!!!
I can completely relate to what you are going through!
Yikes no thanks! I do like the yarn colors though so i think I'll just make a varigated blanket lol. Thanks for your honest review Donna!
I completely agree that all of their colorways are gorgeous with this line of yarn!
Hi. I like the colors. I don't crochet. I knit and they make very pretty baby Afghans
That's good to know!
So far, nobody has mentioned the quality of the yarn itself. I was not pleased, when I did my first row, I couldn’t slide the clusters close together easily at all. I think I’ve been making mine with a higher quality of yarn and it’s more silky and has a sort of sheen, and isn’t so thick. So I wouldn’t want to try the granny Square project with this yarn. My granny squares with a nicer yarn are very pretty, and I am more accepting of weaving in the ends now that I’ve tried the red heart one.
It definitely has the typical "Super Saver" texture, which generally is a bit rougher than other yarns. This can be challenging next to sensitive skin, or as you mentioned just trying to maneuver the stitches around. Of course I made blankets in the early 80s that are still going strong despite all of the washings and dryings because of the tougher texture of the yarn.
I would rather weave in my ends than all the tension manipulation but i have found that it is very cheaper then buying various colors so i will buy this but probably for just one project
Definitely going to try it was curious
The colors are very pretty on it!
That is exactly what I was worried about with this yarn. I don’t need anything making my tension tighter for one. I struggle to loosen up. And for two I am never going to have the patience to do this over and over again to get it absolutely perfect. The colors are cute, and I could see it making some cute objects…just not granny squares 😹
Absolutely! I completely agree!
Thank you for this video! I would have gotten very frustrated with this yarn if I hadn't watched this video first.
Glad it was helpful!
