94. Conquering OCD & Behavioral Addiction: the Power of Mindset, with Dr. Johann D’Souza

    Dr. Johann D’Souza is the founder of Values First Therapy, where he offers modern psychology with traditional values. He specializes in helping high achievers overcome anxiety or OCD by using science-based strategies.
    He earned a PhD and MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston on a Presidential Fellowship after receiving a prior MA from Boston University in Psychology and BA from University of Dallas in Theology. His research publications focus on the psychological benefits of hope and optimism.     Learning the difference with OCD and OCPD was very valuable. OCPD might be a good topic for its own episode.
    I used to have a friend who would get annoyed if I didn't pick the closest parking spot even if it was a few spaces over. He would tell me I have to move my car to pick that spot. He felt justified in eliminating small amounts of waste.

      Agreed! I thought I didn't have anything diagnosable because I don't perform rituals like hand-washing, but now I find out there's this other term that nails me completely.
      @Stephanie Winn, if you do an OCPD episode, I would be interested to hear that guest comment on whether it can be work-induced. In a software development environment, small mistakes can have big consequences, so for a long time I felt that perfectionism was adaptive and rigid self-control was the only way to reduce such errors.

    I had a similar experience in school where I could do well on tests without effort, but struggled later, because I was so unaccustomed to having to work hard to learn and achieve things. And I've heard the same story from 2 or 3 friends and relatives. Some more data points for you I guess.
