Coach Matt: “AAAAAAARGH!!! I said ‘no secondary lead!’ This is such a pet peeve of mine!” Video Game Matt: “I steal as soon as the pitcher’s lead leg comes up. Can’t pick me off. I’m from the Antonelli school of baserunning.”
That runner was me when I tried out for JV freshman year. I was HBP and got arrogant while on first. The pickoff throw was already in 1B's glove by the time I realized I was off the bag. Lesson very much learned.
I was a left handed pitcher. I learned that balk move early on...from an umpire nonetheless. I picked people off left and right and loved hearing the opposing dugout screaming “BAALLKK” while their base runner runs back to the dugout. FYI I was taught that my motion home as a left handed is dependent on where my leg lands. As long as it was within the 45 degree angle of first base and home plate. That being said, lefties, you are able to and will pick people off left and right if you find that sweet 45 degree angle spot. Your opponents will hate it. Oh, and keep in mind, nobody on the field has a protractor in their pocket 🤣
What I did with a lefty on the mound was wait until the pitcher's foot landed on a straight path to the plate before taking my secondary (if it's anything other than a perfectly straight path, he's going to first). It's a split second earlier than waiting until the pitcher releases the ball and allowed me to get a couple shuffles in before the ball reached the catcher. Also watch the pitcher's eyes, just like a defensive back does to a quarterback. Overall, it's very important to observe a pitcher's mannerisms on the mound for purposes of baserunning as well as hitting. I wasn't the fastest guy on the field but I stole a lot of bases just by figuring out which pitchers were easy to steal off.
Dave H First, “when the pitcher starts his motion and his right foot crosses his left knee, the pitcher has to throw home. ... If you are throwing over to 1st base your right foot must land on the 1st base side of this imaginary line.” Right from the book. He’s right on imaginary line is 45 degrees, BUT and that’s a huge BUT. If left handed pitchers right foot crosses his knee then it’s go time cause he cannot throw back to first.
Dave H you are correct good sir: Rule 8.05(a) Comment: If a lefthanded or righthanded pitcher swings his free foot past the back edge of the pitchers rubber, he is required to pitch to the batter except to throw to second base on a pick-off-play. All more for what I was saying regarding go time. Little league and high school ball was always at the knee, but either way that is how I instruct my kids. You see that foot cross the knee then make that transition or take off.
That and walking back to first after your secondary lead, Aaaaarg! And while I’m venting, coaches who bunt down 5 runs in last inning after your 8 and 9 hitters just reached base with 0 outs....other coach “thanks for 1 of the 3 outs I need to win the game, coach” oooo, and giving outs away by calling for stealing in hitters counts!
One of the first times I ever got on base playing on the big field with lead offs I was given the steal sign and there was a lefty on the mound and I left 0.1 seconds too early and got picked off. I was 13 at the time and the team we played wasn’t that good but they were good at picking runners off. We won that game but we had 3 innings end with guys getting picked off.
Matt did you happen to watch the Reds second game of the season? The Reds got beat. But if you happen to watch it why didn’t they try a double steel in the 9th to tie the game? I just didn’t understand the coaching on this. 1 out down by 1 run and men on the corners. Vito it’s into double play game over. Unreal. I guess I do care. Lol
In my older Mlb the show games it's so easy to swipe home from third when there's a lefty on the mound. You just take 3x a normal lead and break for the plate as soon as he steps off and it's like a 99% success rate
Sabian Vorachev hey everybody that’s my bad. I commented before I saw that he’s been saying this troll shit to a few comments already. The Balk rule is complicated, don’t blame you for not knowing it
Sabian Vorachev but you aren’t. The act of throwing the ball to first (or any base for that matter) isn’t what does or does not determine what a balk is. It’s all about where you are stepping. You can balk while trying to throw home, or you can balk while trying to throw to first.
@Sabian Vorachev 1. Its an umpire in baseball, not a referee, so when trying to debate rules of a sport you should probably know the terminology. 2. UMPS miss calls all the time, just because an ump calls someone safe on first when he is very clearly out doesn't fundamentally change the rule.

Imagine being the kid who got picked off and seeing this.
I hope he replys to this comment
He’ll be ok
HIS LEG IS GOING HOME!
THAT'S A BALK, UMPS NEED TO START CALLING THIS! IT'S BECOMING LIKE TRAVELING IN THE NBA, NONEXISTENT!
Almost all leftys balk when throwing to first.
Thank you i struggle with lefty basé running
I like ur passionate hate towards being picked off
"Fuck it, you know what, don't lead. Just stay on the bag." -- Matt, late 2020, probably
Confirmed Matt is a saber guy: I’m paying you to get on first, not get picked off at first
Sabian Vorachev I was referring to a “Sabermetrician” or “Saber” for short in the baseball world

That’s a great camera angle for what ur trying to show Matt. Maybe the one good thing about no fans this year is all the good shots we get!
I thought the foot has to cross knee to balk? That right leg is super subjective, but the foot crossing the knee is the deciding factor.
California Phantom if they tag you they will call you out no questions asked that’s the umpire way!
Back plane of the rubber is what the front foot has to reach to commit the pitcher to second or home, not the back knee.

@@CaliforniaPhantom Back knee is not the rule. Back plane of the rubber, which means an additional six inches of twisting, is.

the whole time I was just looking at the #69 and not paying much attention to being picked off. Lesson learned for me...
once the leg comes up, small step back to back then secondary
Good ol' Tommy Milone. Met him when he was with the A's. Nice dude.
@Chris Smith For some reason, he always makes me think of Cheers and the lead character, pitcher Sam Malone.

Max Fried, he's a left hander and has an awesome pick off move.
If that isn't a balk then nothing is.
That was the best defensive play the Orioles had in that game.
I notice that he lift his leg to the side not normally straight to the catcher which allows him to throw to first
His lead leg crossing back on the leg lift is what makes it a balk. Not the degree in which it lands. Had he taken off it might have got a balk call
Nah that won’t ever get called. It has to be a lot more than what Milone does in this video
Antonelli Baseball that’s a filthy move then. So borderline
Appreciate you posting this. Apparently I needed to see this
Agreed!!
Matt ironically the same exact play happened to my team yesterday and it costed us the game.
Free foot swings behind rubber. Balk by rule

I guess I do care. Lol
I didn’t see it unfortunately
Antonelli Baseball
If you do I can’t believe they didn’t try a suicide squeeze.
You say don't get picked off by a lefty, but tell that to the guys who Andy Pettitte picked off.
Against him they should literally do exactly what is said here. Don’t even secondary against him lol
@@AntonelliBaseball Yeah I agree. But even that, they still got picked off.

Why does Davis take ball out of glove and tag barehanded?
Most umpiring is doing 2 man mechanics. It is harder to see the balk in 2 man mechanics.
Jon Lester approves this message.
I got picked off by a lefty once...It was my most embarrassing baseball experience
I guess balks are not reviewable.
That's a balk bro how can pro umps miss this
@Sabian Vorachev That's not what determines a balk. You cannot step towards home on a pick off.

Sabian Vorachev troll
I'm left handed, that is a joke. Should be a step to first or home. Not in the middle.
I wish i had the internet when I was in little league/babe ruth
Lol all these kids saying this is a balk. Lefties have 45 degrees and you cannot tell from this angle
If you see pitchers cheats he’s coming to pick you off.
Go blue jays
Nobody talking abt how many fans are at that game?
Why you just fall off from pursuing more mlb or milb offers from other teams when you last got dropped
Wasn’t the right fit for me at the time
Hi
Isn’t that a balk tho?
It’s only a balk if they call it
Can I get a shoutout I’m going into my sophomore year at Middletown high school in Delaware I’m a 3 sport athlete I’m gonna be in the majors one day
