I just love that the full grown adults in the middle have to cover their ears, I can't describe how much I wish I could sit in the middle of that circle.
Because they're the staff and they are probably there everyday. This isn't good for your ears. Being infront of a good hornline like that is okay for a day or so but everyday getting your ears blasted is not good.
One of the ear trickery things that is interesting is at the very end when they cut off. The other corps you hear in the background is holding a Bb major, but when Crown stops, you expect to hear the echo of the Bb minor. Gets me every time.
@@lilfrugal7922 boooooo Bluecoats are awesome, and because you happen to have an opinion about a brassline, you're a shitty person and I now hate yooouuu
omg that release was sooo on point. Its like the car stopped but it was so perfected and defined that I went flying out the windshield wondering where the car went.
So wait, he mentioned at the end of the tuning sequence that the trumpets go from F to a Bb. As a trumpet player, that would make sense in concert pitch, because for us it would go from our G to our tuning note C. We don't tune on our Bb, like the staff he showed represented. Does Crown actually use concert Eb scale to tune, to end on a concert Ab? That doesn't seem right
4:54 putting your fingers in your ears only makes me play louder. I'm sure most brass players would agree. Thanks for the education. Really interesting.
I have played orchestra for 8 years and only touched saxophone for one year and I absolutely love the original video by them. I have watched it about at least 20 times in the past semester.
“Smooth” sounds are usually major chordings and voicing, notes that tie hand in hand to each other. its the stuff thats more pleasant to hear “Crunchy” doesn’t flow as smooth. Dissonance and notes that don’t sound like they should be together (but sound nice in a passive-aggressive type love) break down that “feel good” flowing like sound.
@@rylandcook5301 Dissonance is a wonderful thing in music, AS LONG AS it is resolved in the end. That is my beef with Blue Devil shows. They dont bother with resolution and it tends to leave me fatigued and glad they are done.
I know I'm way behind the ball on getting to this, but you for sure are hearing a Db in this and it's in the euphoniums/baritones. No, it's not implied; it's actually there and it sounds AWESOME
I'll give him a 10 on Visual Analysis, 10 on General Effect, and what the heck, a 9.9 on Color Guard (for his epic bodily moves!) If he did a backflip at the end, that would've sealed it!
exceptionally well done. (I didn't understand ONE WORD of it, but I just let my goosebumps lead the way) you're passionate and smart about what you do, and laid it all out beautifully, regardless if my dumb brain doesn't know a B flat from a flat tire
Thank you man im starting to think music theory has no end, even when i think i understand it all there is still stuff i dont know and probably will never know.
After the cluster chords, it's just part of Samuel Barber's music from their show, specifically Medea's Dance of Vengeance. Man do I love me some Barber...
It's not just the chord tones, though I get the theory.... its the timbre and tuning.... It's just such a clean brass sound that punches me in the feels-taint....
Ok, I'm a drummer so i always watch the drumlines warm up. But, WHAT THE HELL HAVE I BEEN MISSING?!!! Next year i will watch more horns and definitely more pit percussion.
That Db could be what is called a combination tone, which is just a tone that we hear that but is not really there or is not played at all, it is a psychoacoustic phenomenon.
Andrew Hill they might be, i never really analyzed it but nice catch, I just stating that theory just for the fun of it for us music nerds but I’ll check it again and see
Lol I agree with Andrew Hill I heard that d flat too there is something playing it if you listen closely but I can't tell if its a mellophone or a high baritone
hello, i realize this is a little while late, but when i listen to the actual show, the mellos change notes more at that same note but in this warm up and in this video, ruclips.net/video/lCzx-3DEPGI/видео.html , they dont do it. Why?
Agreed. It is just harmonics. You're hearing some slight overtones from the Db that is already in the chord from the bari voice, making it appear like an add9, but it's just another voice of the 3rd (Db)
I'm sorry, but whenever I hear something about music theory, I wonder when we're going to start talking about retro-encabulators: ruclips.net/video/aW2LvQUcwqc/видео.html
That video didn't actually go viral. It was just me rewatching it 700k times.
Jacob Davis same
And my 700k times 😂
It has been forever since I read something so deeply true to me
Aaaaand I help!
Oh, I thought that was my 100000 views
yeah i’ve seen that clip maybe 15 times and i still get chills
John Peyton good to know i'm not the only one constantly rewatching this
15 times is weak. Probably have watched it over 75 times now no exaggeration
Just 15?? Missing a few zeros there.
15 times? I watched this like since October 2020, and I still get chills.😂 Seriously, now Bb Minor is my fav chords of all time
Rookie numbers 🥱, lmao true though, chills every time
I just love that the full grown adults in the middle have to cover their ears, I can't describe how much I wish I could sit in the middle of that circle.
ConnorSM64 Yesssssss!
Because they're the staff and they are probably there everyday. This isn't good for your ears. Being infront of a good hornline like that is okay for a day or so but everyday getting your ears blasted is not good.
They do it to hear how well balanced/tuned the ensemble is.
Your hearing afterwards would not agree with that statement
One other thing: The sound reflects better on pavement, not grass.
One of the ear trickery things that is interesting is at the very end when they cut off. The other corps you hear in the background is holding a Bb major, but when Crown stops, you expect to hear the echo of the Bb minor. Gets me every time.
I think there is a clip of the Bluecoats who were doing the B-flat major at that time
And it's cool how after he cuts them off you can here a Bb major chord in the background somewhere 👍
That's the bluecoats inferior brass section warming up. Crown completely drowned them out
Lil Frugal not the year before :)
I’m so glad someone else heard it too! 😂
Fact. Crown 16's hornline was definitely one of the best in this decade

Perfect and hilarious analogy.
Very educational! Crown definitely sets the example for excellent brass lines.
But....BUT.....Blue Devils!!!! (said VERY sarcastically)
Yes, Crown , Coats and Phantom always blow me away with brass.

Marched for crown in 06. That brass program is probably the most solid and technical in the world of DCI.
4:54 putting your fingers in your ears only makes me play louder. I'm sure most brass players would agree. Thanks for the education. Really interesting.
Lmao
I think its because they're staff and it helps them hear tuning better. could be wrong
Uh hearing loss isn't fun? The staff have to be on the receiving end of that every day lol. You'd cover your ears too

Wait till you hear percussion terms
cant wait to audition for them in 2019
Ekiso Okima after the 2018 season I’m auditioning for them too I’ll see you there remember this name “Nathan Williams” or “Nate Williams”
Ekiso Okima good luck. I am hoping to adution too.
Nate Williams good luck
So how was auditions lol
How did auditions go?

Hi long loss sis
Our hs band has been doing that first part of the warmup for our brass for a while and it’s amazing
I love hearing the Bb dominant 7th chord (2nd to last chord of thumbs) from Bluecoats after Crown Brass releases off of Bb minor
I always watch the video first thing in the morning to start my day because it always gives me chills
Love the break down. One of my all time favorite clips.

Jesus Christ Crown always brings huge volume, definitely one of the best horn lines
Gives me Goosebumps every time at the end
I think one of the most deadly things about this particular lot video from Crown is the silence. At the cutoff you can hear the loud silence.
Video sends chills down my spine and makes my ears feel heavenly.
I LOVE this!! More music theory on Crown!
Thank you man im starting to think music theory has no end, even when i think i understand it all there is still stuff i dont know and probably will never know.

Thanks for the info! I just 'discovered' them today! That video sound went to my very soul ! I cried with excitement ! 😎👏
Someone finally explains it!!

me scientifically explaining what I hear in this:

I've watched this like 700k times too. So gud finally someone explains the cool effect
that crown hit reduces me to tears
We need a music theory class taught by him. Plz make this happen!
I play this for my middle school bands when they first learn to use their air correctly.
It's not just the chord tones, though I get the theory.... its the timbre and tuning.... It's just such a clean brass sound that punches me in the feels-taint....
Tune that piano. yikes
not out of tune, a lot of drums corps tune to A:442Hz
wait really? why? Im so curious now.
one of those is not 440 I suspect the piano
Probably something to do with it being hot in the summer.
The piano isn't even in tune with itsself
Lucky me I've been to and practiced in that same parking lot and preformed at that field

Great explanation of the warm up progression. I have listened to Carolina Crown play this beautiful progression n^n+1 times!

Is there a video like this one that explains Blue Devils Space Chords?

Idk, unless my ears are tricking me, it sounds like there’s a baritone playing that note. A bit loud actually, you can hear the gaps in the sound.
Andrew Hill they might be, i never really analyzed it but nice catch, I just stating that theory just for the fun of it for us music nerds but I’ll check it again and see

After they stop playing I can hear a resolution of the chord but where is it coming from
Bluecoats horn line
first time seeing this series, yay for education
Hey Chris!!!! This is so cool!
At the end of the lot video whoever was also warming up resolves their Bb Minor to a Bb Major
Can you talk about why the 2018 cross men ballad end sounds so smooth and N I C E?
Very nice!!
I definitely hear the Db
I’ve never seen anything like that in a hornline warmup!
This is awesome !
okay, this is epic
Great video.
Love it man but lets get some new footage... it's season time.
Their lot warm up changes every year, buddy.
Yeah, we know.

I thought the bugles used in the Drum and Bugle Corps were G instruments? If so, why would they center on Bb for tuning?
Althepal Music - Corps switched to Bb horns several years ago.

Yes. With another few listens to it, it sounds like a harmonic. Not in the actual show either.
Bb minor plus the C the mellos rip up to is effectively an add9, yes. (Until it’s resolved, of course)
