Breaking Benjamin's "Do It All" frontman Benjamin Burnley is a fun vocalist to dig into... Style wise. One the one hand, he's a fantastic study in contrasts: Displaying a fantastic range with lots of dynamic control. He has a forward, brighter and aggressive 'clean voice' coupled with almost 'growl-like' screams. Yet he pulls it all together impeccably well both in the studio and with his band members/background vocalists live on stage. He's a perfect example of a vocalist, who's also a fantastic producer and vocal arranger.
Join me as I break down Burnley's singing and screaming in great detail using several studio excerpts from some of the best Breaking Benjamin songs! (Oh and there's a surprise, newer example in there too that's NOT from Breaking Benjamin!)

Well Ben suffers from some weird condition which affects his vocalchord when he sings, thus affects his singing performance. Most fans let alone other people don't know that so they judge is poor performance when he is suffering from that condition.
The genre he sings/play in doesn't help either to the major public.
      Shame indeed.

Oh man seeing him live was a treat and a half, I love Benjamin and learning to sing like him is something I will DEFINITELY set time aside for- I just kind of wish that this mans here used a song like Crawl, that's a good example of their screaming variations- So's Unknown Soldier and Evil Angel imo

Bro... I've never seen any of your videos before, but I'll be watching more! I've been a musician all my life. Started on drums at age 5, vocals at age 13, and guitar a couple years later at age 15. I've been a solo performer for 25 years or so now. So believe me when I say, I've heard a lot of other people and vocal coaches talk about how the voice works and how to make it better. I have NEVER heard anybody articulate the things you talk about and show in this video so well. Dude, you definitely know your shit. Bravo! Amazing video! 🤘🏻
Ben Burnley to me is easily one of the top 5 best male vocalists I've ever heard. I love covering his tunes! His range, diversity, and control are UNPARALLELED! He is to male vocalists what Lzzy Hale is to female vocalists... The first I think of when asked who is the best. Great job uncovering their secrets of controlled power, compression, and screaming technique! Especially how to find the sweet spot where the voice cracks on its way through the transition from chest up to head... 👍🏻
Can't wait to check out more of your content! ✌🏻

Great video as always! Ben is one of my favorite rock singers. I would recommend for a next video Pete Loeffler from Chevelle, his voice is very expressive and breathy, and as you say, he explores a lot the voice break. A very interesting voice.

When you're doing gutterals like those in songs like diary of jane, I think it's actually important to lay off of vocal cracking. While you can find rough and gravely vocals, those are clean. They rely more on compression and tongue placement.

I'm not a professional singer nor even a practicing one but I've kept it as a hobby for what seems like my whole life. I've always liked the emotion and expression music gives us but I'm not a fan of being the center of attention and super shy so I never have tried to take it anywhere but trying to teach other people is a whole other level. I have a lot of respect for that.

When singing/screaming, actually pronunciate the words is as important as support or proyection. Many singers (myself included) struggle with diction problems because of the tension. Spend a little time in your pronuntiation, guys.

Hey Chris, I’d think you would enjoy how to pick apart Phil Bozeman’s screams and cleans he does during whitechapel. Absolutely insane talent behind those gutterals.

Idk as much as I love BB and Ben's vocals even since the beginning of the band he's never been able to hit the high notes live that you hear on the album's. The biggest most noticable thing he does live is when he hits high notes and I mean every time he PULLS AWAY FROM THE MIC AND FALLS SHORT. EVERY SINGLE TIME. OR HE LETS THE CROWD SING IT LOL. Simple as that. The studio has done wonders for him

If you watch live, clean performances he can hit the notes. I’m no professional, but I imagine that doing shows back to back like he does greatly affects his range even after the first show. I’ve heard interviews of singers saying they get too into it and blow out their vocal cords because of the crowds energy.
