  • I drain, flush and refill the coolant system on the Golf, making sure it's all bled and working properly.

In the 90's VW fitted a pressure relief bypass to the heater hoses under recall. This was because if the coolant tank cap didn't relieve pressure in the event of head gasket failure, the heater matrix would blow and spray hot water over your legs! Your bypass has been removed and replaced with copper pipes, probably in an attempt to get the heater working better. But as you know it is the flaps to blame.

Copper pipe at the start was common fix if the heater stopped blowing warm air. Used to delete/replace OEM valve/s that seize up and stop diverting hot water through the heater matrix

I have same prob with a no 3.5 golf cabrio.
Id say itd t's the flaps in the matrix heater box .
Little bits of foam blows out through the vents .
From the foam rotting over yrs of use..
Dash out and rebuild the flap doors...I'd say....
Big job but a bit of a day do it ...

Have you had any foam spit out of the heater vents yet dude? The old OEM foam on the mixer flaps can come away and there’s holes in the flaps for the foam to stick to itself when folded over it.
If the foam is gone the hot and cold air mixes through the holes so you still only get medium warm air - that could be something to look at :)

Have a look at my other video that follows on from this. You hit the nail on the head. It was exactly this problem and it's fixed now.

Endfloat aah yes, I literally just watched the video after commenting haha 🙈😅
I believe I’ll have to give mine a go soon also as I’m getting the odd bit of foam coming through; I’m still getting pretty good hot air but the mix isn’t great/ much different when moving through the zones :/
Dreading it slightly as going through the Mk2 pages on Facebook, no one really says its great fun doing it haha 😂

@@jxrd-ks I'm currently stripping a Passat gearbox and between the 2 jobs, doing the heater fix in the golf was an absolute pleasure. It's not especially difficult to be honest, and it's a relatively clean job. A nice one for a Sunday afternoon.

Endfloat oh yeah out of them two jobs I’d rather do the heater flaps haha 😂 I know RubJonny on fb / from the forum has a guide on how to get the whole thing out without taking dash out, in order to fully cover the flaps and run a bead of fresh closed cell foam around the edges of the flaps to stop them knocking inside; I want to attempt to follow but will probably be one of them jobs that ends up taking way longer than you anticipate, which is usually the way 🙈😂

@@jxrd-ks A lot of the stuff I removed I didn't need to remove, and I didn't film that, so you can feel free to learn from my mistakes. Really all you need to do is remove the 2 parcel shelves, centre air vent, radio and the centre console. That'll give you the access you need.
