  • What is the effect of high altitude (elevation) on cycling performance. How much watts can you push out staying in the same heart rate zone? I took the test on Tenerife, riding up Mount Teide at a constant 300 watts as long as I could... Starting at sea level all the way to 2400 meters of elevation. I will show and discuss the results in this video.

    Here in SoCal there are a few classic climbs.
    Glendora Mountain Ridge (gate to shack) is a about 13 k with an average gradient over 5%.
    Continuing on to Mt. Baldy is Glendora Ridge Road, 34k and average gradient over 3%
    Do them both and it's 50 K starting at 300 M and ending at 1,300 M.

    I found the altitude mega tough. It killed me after I got to the caldera, both a headwind and the drag up to the highest point. I did the descent the other way, which gives you almost the whole thing with just one minor corner. Must admit, I never want to see it again ..... only after the cafe does it get nice. Although the next two times I used different routes which were quieter from the coast road up to the last cafe.

    1) Are you okay with the standard iPhone earphones? I cannot ride with them, cause they take up much wind noice and I don't want to turn up the volume quiet high. Same experience? Or does it depend also on the helmet?
    2) Intermittend Fasting:
    Do you do most rides in if-state? Even high-intense workouts? I know your 2pm eating time, as you mentioned in your Girona video. I'm curious about energy levels. Your glycogen-depot should be depleted after 3-4 hours at intermediate intensity. Just interested, thanks for replying ;-)

    How are aero bikes at climbing I can't decide between the canyon aero or ultimate. Both look good spec wise and are light but the aero just looks so much sexier but i don't race.

    • @travisashimself2356
      @travisashimself2356 5 лет назад

      Aero doesn't really do anything climbing. Climbing is all weight and comfort in regard to the bike.

    • @pl4free
      @pl4free 5 лет назад +1

      When you're riding, it doesn't matter how good your bike looks, it matters how good you feel on it. So buy a bike you're comfortable on while riding, that's going to make it easy to ride often and hard. Aero bikes tend to be better than anything else, as long as you can hold the aggressive position, but if you're not racing aero or no aero is all the same. Not to mention your body and body position is the biggest drag-producing-factor on the bike, not the bike itself. So if you want aero, get really low on the bike and tuck your head

    • @Yosser70
      @Yosser70 5 лет назад

      Go aero! It'll have more benefit on climbs up to around 5/6% than a light bike and it will also deliver you either quicker or fresher to the climbs because if the aero gains on the flat. Saying that though, I like aero bikes because like you, I think they look better! lol

    • @pl4free
      @pl4free 5 лет назад

      @@Yosser70 air resistance at 5/6% incline is only a 14% respectively 10% fraction of the resistance force the cyclist has to overcome, the rest up to 100% being almost exclusively gravity. And since the bike only produces a small fraction of the drag while riding, the cyclist being the more important drag-producing element, I really can't see how an amateur who doesn't race and probably won't be going fast on said climbs would ever benefit from an "aero" bike. This is just mumbo-jumbo marketing

    • @Yosser70
      @Yosser70 5 лет назад

      @@pl4free Why would him not racing mean he isn't going to be quick? You totally missed the point about the advantage of aero on the flat before the climb. Over the course of a ride, unless there's a lot of very steep climbs an aero bike will be faster at the same power output.
