    Excellent video. I have a unique situation. I did all of the typical motor mount tests and there is no excessive play in the movement of the engine, however when idling in drive, there is a very deep low frequency vibration. 2007 Mustang v6.

      That sounds like a motor mount. I haven't experienced it with mustangs but we hardly ever get them in the shop. You can search TSB 08-3-4 to see if that might fit your situation. But my first guess would be worn mounts. Ford cars are notorious for premature mount failure. Mostly in 4 cylinders, but the 4.0 is a strong engine which I imagine could stretch rubber mounts easily, if they were cheaply made.

    Greetings, I have a BMW 525xi (e60). Body Class: Sedan/Saloon. I too experienced a random vibration when I acceleration on the brakes. it feels though something is out of place when I drive 40-70mph at a 90-180 degree on turns. I had several works done to the car like the axel, arm bearings, etc. I went to the tire shop to purchase all 4 new tires at 75,000 miles. A few highway milages (832 ml.) on the road this became a problem. The alignment was done a day ago and went onto the highway and freeway. it was scary even after driving 30+ yrs. Please advise. By the way, your video is very informative and the extra mile you go to feed your fan great information for economic reason is a PLUS! Keep up the awesome work in store for you to continue and grow.

    Another thing to consider in the product line by Jilcat Proline. IT was engineered for aerospace, tested in racing and used in the military, so it is credible, but it removes the sludge build up that typically associated with stalling, vibration, and cvt issues.

    Great comprehensive video. I found it while trying to track down a vibration that has been around for a while now but gotten worse. 2016 Ram 2500. Has aftermarket wheels and slightly larger tires. Vibration occurs at speeds 55 to 75 mph. Most noticeable between 70 and 75. Generalized vibrations felt mostly in my body. Dont feel it on steering wheel. Steering wheel tracks straight without play. Sometimes feels worse while accelerating other times it doesn't.
    I've lifted the front end off the ground and checked for play at 12/6 as well as 3/9 on each wheel. No play. Front drive shaft has no play In it and from what i can DOES NOT move while driving down the road in 2wd. Rear drive shaft doesn't have any play either. Control arm bushings appear to be in good shape. It's back at the tire shop for another road force balancing.
    Ive ordered a set of hubcentric spacers to see if MAYBE there is some play between wheel and hub. But I'm at a loss.
    The ONLY thing I found loose was the drag link to the pitman arm. There is a bit of roll and play to that....
    Please, any insight you can provide is much appreciated.

    My 1996 Cummins 2WD Ram truck had a similar issue. The front left tire would bounce 'out of control' above 30mph. The culprit was the rear right seized park brake cable. Confused? I was... Because of the drag on the rear right, the only torque was coming from the rear left which created a tendency for the front end to want to be pushed to the right. This caused the front right to dig in and the front left to want to lift off. It took a while for me to wrap my head around what was actually happening, but when I changed out both rear park brake cables, the problem was gone.

    Great video, you've covered a lot which helps me diagnose better when it comes to my older vehicles. This may be an odd one, I have a 2008 Impala SS, 325hp. It vibrates when slowing down, not necessarily when braking, just slowing down and it happens between 20 to 15 mph. After 15 mph it goes away. Have you heard of that before? TIA! Causing pins and needles in my foot using the accelerator. 😖 Vibration intensifies with the air cond or heater on. The only issue I can hear that's abnormal is a random squealing type sound only when reversing. Hopefully the cause can be found or I'll have to sell it. 😫

    One of the best videos about noises and vibrations .
    I drive an E90 that is 10 year old and 115 K , it has a rhythmic fine growling noise between 50-70 speed , worse at 60 , none below 50 and above 70 and there is only a tiny bit of vibration in the steering wheel and vibration mostly felt in the front of the vehicle. Balance checked , tyres in good condition , engine runs fine , and two garages could not put their finger on the cause . Also I have no problem with car handling but I do occasionally have a gritty feeling on my leg and in the pedals bay . There is a minor issue with wheel alignment but no apparent uneven wear on the front tyres . Any ideas ? . Will subtle bent wheel cause this ? Could this be lower arm bushing problem ?

    Thank you for the video and the great explanations. Regarding your tight/loose demo though, wouldn't a bad spot on a tire or bearing happen just as often, being ONCE per revolution? The tire spins once each time the bearing spins once, right? Thank you! I am thinking maybe it is the distance from the center that makes it feel tight or loose, but I think I get what you are saying.

    Hey James, I have a good one for you. I have a 2006 Toyota Sequoia. I get a harmonic vibration (think, a vibration that makes the same tone/sound/hum of a bad wheel bearing) that is detectable starting at 35ishMPH and gets really bad right at 55MPH. It sort of goes away or isn’t as bad over 55… it smooths out would be a better term. I also get a clunk sound going from P or N into D. So I naturally checked the ujoints (w/ transmission in neutral, transfer case in 2WD, wheels chocked) and didn’t get any play, the driveshaft is solid. Weird right? The only other thing I’ve noticed is the rear brake pads are starting to hit the squealer pins. The only reason I mention that is because I’ve once had a caliper hang up on me on a different vehicle that caused pretty bad highway, speed vibration, however, with the Sequoia I’m not noticing any vibration, when breaking, so kind of ruled that out. Any other things you can recommend checking? This one is stumping me.

    What an amazing video. Sir I have to ask and pray you take a moment. I have been under my hummer h2 for 3 weeks trying to find this vibration that turns on like a light switch around 65mph. Semi tight vibration but to aggressive imo to be a failing hub. Everything is tight underneath all the bushings are in good shape. Four brand new tires and rims everything balanced and rotated brand new shocks upfront. I simply can’t find it. It’s coming from the front can be felt in steering, on the floor, both seats and scary audible. I can drive through it around 80-85mph it stops, then coast back through it in N.

The vibration can be seen in the shifter...it shakes a bit...and it can be heard. As I slow down, without brakes, the vibration gets faster and disappears in the mid 50’s mph. The drive shaft has been balanced, the tires have been balanced and the brakes don’t seem to come in to play. Any Idea as to the cause?

  • @ronmaxwell6972

    Ok I am Lucky I have issues with two at the same time. First one has the vibration when you let off your gas peddle. And it's pretty loud and in the back of the car. I have not check the Pinion Angle yet, but will. I had the driveshaft checked and it was out a little bit and they balanced it and it did help some. But still exist. I replaced the rear disc brake pads as they were loose from their metal backing plates, and that too seamed to help a little bit. So, I am trying to decide if a rear end carrier or wheel bearing, Pinion Angle or what? This is a 33 Ford Vicky with TCI Frame Lincoln Versailles rear end w/disc and a triangle 4 link, just bought car.
    Second on is at high speed, driveshaft check spot on no haven't check pinion angle but will, that is what I suspect on this one vibration starts at 100+ and continues as speed increases.
    Car is a 71 Torino Pro Touring with 2013 Coyote Drive Train 6 speed with a 3:73 gear. I think pinion angle a real suspect here.
    Any suggestions?? Or other ways to check and or pin point issues? Thanks, Ron

    93 Chevy 1500 has loose steering and when I brake at a high rate of speed example would be pulling up to a yellow light and you see a cop on the other side so you have to hit your brakes it makes the front end wobble pretty ferociously, more towards the left side. If I ease into it and have time to break it's still wobbles but not as severely. It's the first truck I've purchased myself and plan on doing the upgrades and any type of repairs myself. Where would you suggest I start? There is what seems to be a lot of grease on the front left control arm and around the idler arm.

I checked engine coolant . all in good condition. during acceleration not speeding up and start vibrate whole body and steering too. could you tell me what would be reason for this. thank you in advance

    JamesonDIY I have an 05 cummins, I put new General "Grabbers" on it less than 3k ago. I pick up a vibration when I excelerate and when I let off, I don't believe it's a bearing and I trust the shop that put the tires on. But can't undoubtedly say it's the drive shaft or u joints. Any way you know if I could try to diagnose it without leaving it at a shop?

    hello
    I have a 2022 model golf 8 R car.
    I drove my car very hard for 1 year. (track, drift, drag)Naturally there was a problem with my car.
    When I take off at full power, there is a vibration that starts at 70-80km/h and ends at 100-120km/h.Vibration comes directly from the rear or from the middle of the car .
    tires new
    Balanced, no dents on the rims
    no vibration at constant speed, it just vibrates at full power.
    do you have any idea about this?
    The interesting part is the driveshaft has changed. But the vibration did not stop completely.. 60% less vibration than before, but it did not completely :(

    I have a Honda Ridgeline and I have a terrible vibration on the steering wheel and the center console, it feel like the whole vehicle shake when at high speed or when ever I brake and also when I hit a bump . I’ve changed the control arms, axels, rack with rods, shock absorbers in the front end . Could it be something in the rear part of the vehicle?

    Hello. My steering wheel does not shake when applying brakes. Ever. My car from the bottom front shakes and sounds different when I apply brakes at high speed. Only during high speed when I brake it feels like car is going to break down and the idle sounds different. Idk if its the engine or brake stuff. Never does it during drive in the city. Only on high speed braking.

    The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland 5.7l I have is making a grinding rattling sound on acceleration. The half shafts don't feel lose when I try moving them when it's parked but the front drive shaft felt like it moves side to side slightly. I order a new front drive shaft. It's the style with CV joints. The truck has about 140,000 miles. Do you think replacing the front drive shaft will fix the problem????

    Great video, very helpful. Wondering if you have any ideas about mine - I have a vibration in the floor pan, gas pedal and steering wheel. I feel it only during acceleration and only at a certain RPM range (it happens from 2000-2300RPM....outside of that range you dont feel it). Its not a "violent, shake the truck" type vibration....its more like if you put your foot (or hands) on a vibrating cell phone. The stereing wheel itself doesnt wobble or shake side to side, you just feel this cell phone type buzzing through it, the gas pedal and the floorboard. This is in a 2017 RAM 1500 4x4. Thanks!

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Typically a vibration during acceleration is drive line related. Axles, driveshaft, u-joints, etc. The fact that you're feeling it up front is odd. 4WD is selective I'm assuming, so there should be no engine power to any driveline components up front, unless you're in 4WD. Also, the fact that the truck is so new, seems odd there'd be a problem like that. There is a recall on some 2016-2017 Rams that may have a loose bolt in the rear differential, but I would suspect you would feel that more in the rear. Anyway, its worth calling the dealer to see if your truck applies to the recall. Maybe they could give you insight into the vibration as well. Recalls and TSBs get published when enough of the same problems come in to the dealer. Especially on newer cars like yours.
      The dealers see those problems first on new cars, and the info trickles down to the public after awhile. If this truck is still under warranty I would just take it in to the dealer. If not, I would call and ask about the recall. If you're truck applies, I'd mention the vibration and give them the description you gave me. Info like that helps techs duplicate the problem and makes it easier to figure out.
      If the recall doesn't apply to you, and you have no warranty left, that makes it tougher. But the right tech could figure it out. I would check the motor mounts. Weak motor mounts can cause vibrations... Usually at idle, but I have seen them cause random vibrations at certain RPMs and would cause the dash to shake/buzz a bit. Also I'd check that no part of the front part of the driveline (the 4WD stuff) was not stuck in 4WD when you are supposed to be in 2WD. If that stuff checked out ok, I would check the basics: tire balance, brake rotor warping, driveshaft wobble.
      And if all that stuff seems good, honestly I'd say something like, and I'm sure this is something the customer (you) does not want to hear...."Everything looks good. It's possible that there is something inherently wrong with the design of the truck, that transfers vibrations from the driveline to the dash. It's also possible that there is a problem we CAN fix, but until it gets worse there's no way to pinpoint the cause of it."
      What I've seen a lot on Chevys and Fords is very cheap engine mounts, as well as minimal dampening material behind the dash. Those two things combined will cause all sorts of vibrations, rattles and buzzes inside the car, in and around the dash area. I haven't seen it as much on Dodges, but that is a really new truck, and techs like me that work in independent shops don't see problems on cars that new. Everyone takes them to the dealer. I usually dont get cars in newer than 4-5 years old.
      So hopefully your truck is still under warranty, and they'll figure it out before the warranty is up. Good luck either way.

      Thank you for the very detailed response!
      Its actually been to 2 separate dealers for this issue. Like you said, they all came back with "its normal". Each dealer found a truck or two that exhibited the exact same issue, so to them it is normal. Just to make sure everyone was honest, I actually test drove an even newer truck (2018 with 6 miles on it) and wouldn't you know it does the exact same thing.
      Interesting you mention 4WD....the vibration is more pronounced when in 4WD. Even the dealer confirmed that. But the 4WD setup in my truck is basically doing nothing until the rear wheels slip. However, I have confirmed that the front driveshaft is spinning at all times (in 4WD without rear wheel slippage and even in 2WD). The only thing that happens when engaging 4WD is the axle actuator is engaged....the xfer case doesnt feed any power until the rear wheels slip. If just engaging the axle actuator makes the vibration more pronounced, I was hoping the dealer(s) would use that as a clue and a starting point. Alas, they did not and just reported that its normal, since they found other trucks that did it.
      Again, thanks for the response. If you happen to ever come by something like this, please let me know! I am always paranoid about automatic transmission issues, and this truck uses the ZF 8HP70 which is supposed to be pretty robust, but it sure seems complicated....hopefully my vibration is not transmission related (I think the torque converter is considered part of the driveline, where an RPM-specific vibration could occur in)

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  6 лет назад

      That's interesting the front driveshaft is always spinning when in 2 wheel drive.
      Yeah so that kind of doesn't surprise me what they said at the dealers. It really could be one of those things that takes a few years to get worse until we finally see any info about the cause of it. The torque converter is a part of the driveline. Something as simple as an improperly balanced torque converter or flywheel could definitely cause an RPM specific vibration. If that's the case there will be hundreds of thousands of trucks like yours with the exact same issue. Keep an eye out for TSBs and recalls. Maybe your issue will show up there.

    • @kathyharry223
      @kathyharry223 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks, I will do that.
      Whats interesting is that there are internet posts on and off since 2014 of various model years with a similar issue. No one seemed to get a resolution...some guys just learned to live with it, some people traded their trucks because of it and others are still fighting to get it resolved. Some people swear they dont have it happen in their trucks, some do. Its a really odd thing.
      I would think maybe a trans issue but the fact I drove a 2018 makes me think probably not (what are the chances trucks built that far apart would have the same transmission issue? It could very well be something "in the design", like the way the front diff, engine and axle all mount to the same point and potentially combine to cause a vibration through the frame (into the cab, gas pedal, steering wheel, etc)
      Its a wonderful truck otherwise...just wish I could have gotten one without this vibration (and I have still yet to find one that DOESNT do it).

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  6 лет назад

      Lets hope its not a transmission issue. I guess if you can live with it, and it's not causing any serious issues, it's one of those things that may never get a resolution. Although, I know it can be disappointing to by a new a car, you expect to be perfect, and there's a problem like that right out of the box.
      Off topic, is it a hemi? If so the only major issues Ive seen on RAMs, and anything with a hemi, that is pretty consistent, is the oil burning issue. Just keep that in mind. I've replaced several hemi engines because of this, but ultimately it doesn't matter. They burn oil. Just something to keep in mind.

    I’m hoping you can guide me in fixing a problem I have that is really annoying as I haven’t found the fix for about a year. I bought the car with the issue That I will describe. I got 4 new tires w/balance and a alignment. Guy said one of my calipers is sticking. So I replaced the caliper on that side and left other side alone but I did replace the rotors and pads on both sides along with bleeding the brakes. I also replaced both drum brakes in rear of car in full besides the pistons. Only suspension work I’ve done is replaced the sway bar links on both sides. That is the work I have done or paid someone else to do, My symptoms/problem is that once I hit about 45-50 the steering wheel starts to shake in a I guess tightish way, and increases even more at highway speeds but at some intermediate speeds for example, sometimes 55mph, 70mph it calms down a bit and varies to degree day to day. But no shaking at all below 40ish. My steering wheel also wobbles when I apply the brakes at any speeds around 40mph or higher and also will pull to one side when braking and even turn the steering wheel by itself. Also when braking it makes a creaking sound, to the tune of every rotation and sound slows the slower I get. There is also a kind of grinding sound 45-50mph or higher and most noticed at highway speeds that isn’t loud but I do notice it with music off. I suspect that to be a wheel bearing but I didn’t think a bearing could cause braking shake as well. I also suspect lower control arms or struts could be an issue as my ride comfort isn’t the best. But nothing I can think of helps me see what could cause all these symptoms. If you could help me/lead me in the right direction with your opinion or anyone else that has had a similar one please leave a comment. Also I forgot to say that my car is a 2003 Toyota Celica GT with 172,000 miles, Thank you!

      I would say it's brake related, but that could be wheel bearing/hub also. Since the rotors sit on the hub, which rotates on the bearing, a bad bearing or hub can cause the same vibration when hitting the brakes. Even rust build up in between the hub and rotor can cause this. I would take a closer look at that. If there's nothing visually obvious, it will be tough. If you can narrow down the noise, that might help. You can even measure the temperature of the front brake rotors after a good drive, see if one's a lot hotter than the other. Or you can attempt to lift the car in the air while letting both wheels spin, and see if either one has a wobbly look to it
