It's really great seeing some spotlight on standstill throws, I think it's something way to easily overlooked! When I started I got a lot of tips from an old-school player: learning standstill drives, throwing putters more, learn to have finesse so you can throw nearly any disc. I never imagined standstill drives being so useful as a beginner, but now anytime i have poor footing or a bad lie I feel so much more confident because I know I have that standstill throw I can trust.
Started disk golf a year ago. I have done 2 step walk ups, but my timing was off on this as well as trying to learn full approach X step. I started all over practicing stand still for 2 months. I stumbled on your video on stand still, and the disk review. Best information yet. From Standstill my river is a reliable 250 foot midrange. My mystere is getting out there average 250 to 320 on flat course areas. Thank you two for your great tutorials and hard work.
Okay....that is a weird throw, no insult intended. Majority of RHBH how-tos teach the reach back going straight back along the body. Lindsey, you are the only person I've seen "rounding" on the reach back. I've been trying to find a backhand throw of any kind that would go straight. When I do manage a straight throw I get around 100 feet. Today I tried your style of throw with my putter and.....wow....just wow. 180 to 200 (one throw really perfect). So for anyone else who thinks it's a weird throw...don't put it down until you try it. Thank you Lindsey! You have given me a working backhand.
Wow thanks so much Bill - I'm so glad my video helped you!! I tried a few different ways of throwing in the first couple years of playing regularly, and then finally I just decided to take it back to the basics and find a way I could just focus on my power and release - and this is what worked for me! I find the "rounding" on the reach back gives me the momentum I need to get more power, since just reaching back and straight through doesn't necessarily allow your body to fully turn. Hope it continues to work well for you! :)
Just started disc golf and I am quite keen on using proper technique to avoid strain and injury. This is a great video, from woman to woman, thank you. I am playing the video at half speed which really helps to see the details. Will bring this into my practice. And I like how you hold your disc super flat at anytime, a great habit to develop.
I'm a 58yr old beginner, started about 6 weeks ago, watched all the RUclips clips, standstill swing straight back straight forward, x step and run up with x step, not getting any consistency, then I came across your video, after a few days it just feels so smooth now able to throw 70-75m, a really good throw is about 80m, and the disc goes right where I want it to, 98% of the time. Thanks
No problem at all! It’s definitely a different take on standstill drives but it’s my wife’s go-to throw that she can bomb with! So happy it’s working for you 😁
Really great tutorial. I wish I had something like this when I first started about 2 years ago. I was too uncoordinated to do a run-up or walk-up so I toyed around with standstill until I could get a style right. It's still not perfect, but it allowed me to keep up with my friends, who all do some form of run-up or walk-up. One thing I might point out is, the forehand walk-up is much easier to master, and I was able to get it down in less than an hour. So if your wife wants to try forehand, she may really enjoy a simple walk-up prior to throwing. I find it does help me throw a little farther, with no extra effort, and it's doesn't seem to hurt my accuracy. Best of luck to you both!
Yeah she’s still working on the forehand! I think by next year she’ll have it down. And I definitely agree about the walk up being easier for forehands. For me, it just came naturally and I didn’t even have to think it
Thanks so much Nick! :) I felt exactly the same - trying to figure out how to walk up, pull back, release the disc all at the same time was quite a challenge for me. I went to the standstill just to try to improve the accuracy of my release, and found it also helped me increase my power/distance by almost double! I am slowly working on my forehand, mostly with approach shots at the moment, but hope to get better at driving it forehand this year! :)
Thank you for this video. I'm new to disc golf, only been doing it for 6 weeks with friends who are much more experienced. At 59 and 5'4 I have bad knees and bad rotator cuffs. I can't do an x step to save my life and forehands eventually hurt my shoulder. I'm going to try your style. I like it.
Wow, I’ve been searching for a good standstill method, and all the videos for beginners don’t seem very beginner-ish to me. And this evening the RUclips algorithm feeds me your video without me even searching for it. Great video, hope I can make it work!
Finally, the Algorithm is starting to work in our favour! Lol only kidding. Really appreciate the feedback and we are glad you are finding it helpful! Let us know how it goes :) 👍
I first got into the sport couple years but was in and out. Now I’m getting back into it. I like this video since I’m still getting into disc golf and I’ve been struggling with my drives as a whole and with this video I think it can help me out a lot a tremendous amount.😁❤
Great video!! I’m 52 and just started playing . I have a herniated disc that causes severe back pain and numbness in my left leg. I have a hard time with the x step but with your video I’m learning to throw better and enjoy playing with out getting frustrated . Can you please do more videos with helping people like myself with back issues make throwing easier and more comfortable. Thank you
That’s great to her John 👍 Well my dad is 64 and I’m sure I can ask him to tell me some of his tricks! Lol. We’ll definitely try to include it in future content, thanks for bringing it to our attention 🙂
I am quite New to discgolf (second season) and i am way to uneven. And today was a catastrophe.. i will for sure test this tomorrow on the course! Really good explanation!
I just picked up some disc's yesterday at a local shop yesterday. Then tried to throw them right after. Clueless! I knew I needed help. The disc shop guy got me an instructor and I today had my first lesson. I'm totally confused and overwhelmed with so many techniques (about 7 or 8!). I can't get my feet and body to coordinate. I'm going to try your method. I'm so sore after this lesson I think it is going to takes days to recover. I'm on ice now! I really need a female instructor who is older. I'm in my mid 60's and not very strong or big. BTW, where are all the senior women in this sport? I got to the DGC and it was busy with lots of guys playing. Thanks for such a great video. It looks promising for me!
We love hearing about people finding this video useful to them! Thanks for letting us know Shelley 🙌 As for older women, we most definitely see them on the disc golf courses, but yes, there are fewer of them when compared to guys. Of course if you can’t find an older female instructor to help you, we do offer lessons if you are interested! We understand that the “form standards” may not apply to you at your age, but we can most definitely still help you if you are interested! 👍😁
Love this. I have a somewhat similar throw, perhaps a little less clean looking, but I max out around 350' or so generally outdriving a good chunk of the x-step guys I play with. People are always shocked when they see me throw that far from a stand still.
Love it Scott! As Arnold Palmer once said...Swing your swing! As long as you get the job done, what does it matter?! And also...Who says the X-Step will be the most common in 20 years? Changes in technology and form might evolve 👍
Great video. I can only do standstill because of my bad right knee. I usually just place the disc back to start, but I might try your swinging the disc back motion now.
Great Lesson. After a couple of ACL repairs, I had to throw standstill drives for about two years! Amazing how those standstill throws flew about 80% of an X-Step run up.
I know it's amazing right!? I'm going to work on my x-step this year to increase my distance even further hopefully, although most days I can drive it just as far, if not farther, than some of the guys I play with using standstill! :P It just hurts my back sometimes since that's where most of the momentum comes from.. so x-step will hopefully alleviate that!
@@DrDarylC Yes that's true! I don't have sore knees ever when doing standstill, so with your ACL repairs it might be easier for you to do than the x-step. Justin also has an ACL repair on his right knee though and the x-step doesn't seem to bother him! :)
I'm a bulky fella and don't run up. I do a walking X step when I throw. Feels ok for me, but I have been working on a run up that feels good for me. It's all about comfort.
I tore a meniscus in my right knee last year and I have been using your technique for a while now and love it thank you for sharing. It does really well but I sometimes struggle with my release point. Sometimes I release too late any tips on locking that down?
Thank you for the feedback, we glad you are enjoying the alternate style of throw! As for help with the release point, our only tip would to be concentrate on rhythm and slowing things down. Aside from that, releasing the disc properly is what disc golf is all about, and what keeps making us come back for more 😝
So I want to give you a little criticism and hope it finds you well. Your reach back and pull through looks amazing. I want you to try and follow through. Your body is fighting the urge to distribute the torch your creating therefore causing you to lose power. After you throw, your left leg should be in front of you. This is very simple to practice with a stand still. #respecthergame
Hey Terrance, great advice! If my wife followed through with her body, she would not only get more power, but she would hurt her back less frequently. I’ll be sure to tell her! ❤️
Thanks so much for the advice! That's actually something I really want to work on because I've been finding my back hurts after playing multiple rounds since I'm using it so much to get power. I will hopefully be uploading another video this year to go over my improvements! :)
might just be me, but also seems like doing this makes you alot more prone to rounding, I like to try and kep the disc only moving in a single line, both on the reach back and through the throw. What you can notice in these clips is that sometimes she will over-rotate on her reach back essentially putting her own body between the disc and the line she wants to release on, then she has to whip the disc around her body giving far more variability left and right depending on her release point as the disc is moving in an arc around her body instead of a straight line. edit: just to be clear, talking about her teqhnique as shown, not your tip on improving.
I spent the first half of a game using the x-step which I had been practicing for several months. Not being able to get past 250 feet I finally gave up and threw standing still. The first throw was 320 feet. Go figure.
Man we love hearing stories like this. So many people run up or try to throw too hard. Slowing it down and having proper form makes all the difference to your distance 👍
I’m also a standstill throwing. I noticed you were playing at Paris disc golf course and LaFortune. 👍🏼👍🏼 I have a little bit of a different style than yours. I always say if it works for you to with it.
My game changer was making sure my hand was on the outside of the disc, vs the front or front right. It puts it on a rail of accuracy. So I'm always looking for that.
pretty sure they mean imagine putting the disc in front of your chest and if it was a clock putting your grip hand where 10,11,12 o'clock would be until your elbow is at 90 degrees. This is to get maximum spin when disc rips out of your hand@@victoriamc443
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. All my throws are standstill, and one big difference I notice with your form is that you seem to be standing quite upright and then rotating hips, spine and shoulders, while I shift my weight significantly from back leg to front leg to generate power, which changes my body's angle in relation to the ground. Could you please explain what's happening with your weight shift and lower body? Is the power really coming mostly from your arms/back?? Thank you!
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! Most of her power comes from her back and legs (not so much the arm). She often mentions she gets back pain if she throws too much, so that’s a bit of a sign lol.
Hi Fiona - thanks so much for your question, sorry for the late reply :) I do shift my weight from my back leg to my front quite a bit, and use the momentum of the turn around my body to gain speed and power. I have been noticing that my lower back on the right side begins to bother me when I play a lot, so I'm likely using too much of my back to gain power as well. I'm going to be working on doing more follow through this year. So far most of my weight ends up on the right leg, but hopefully by incorporating more of a follow through as well will alleviate the strain on my back :)
36yo beginner. I'm a 6'8" guy. My big problem, and why I was never really good at most sports, is coordinating feet and upper body. It's been way less frustrating to learn stand still because my shots are way more unpredictable with footwork. I also have the problem where I cover a ton of distance in even three steps. But now I'm trying to revisit the walk up because 200' is the absolute farthest I can throw, despite hours of driving practice. I'm fairly confident I'm not throwing nose up. I assumed my long arms would compensate for no run up, but that's not the case. So far, my 9 speed Innova discs are not liking me.
@@JustDisc I have. Twice. 🤣 But now I've decided to incorporate extremely advanced and technical learning practices, that every instructor ever, from violin to golf, tells you to do. Record myself with the camera that goes everywhere with me. But thanks! I'm going to try to work on it out in the field.
Just remember, that the struggle to keep the nose-angle down in disc golf is what EVERYBODY struggles with. There is no way that you will throw nose-down every single time. Even the professionals struggle with this, and sometimes throw too high or too low. It’s basically like golf…you can hit the ball every time, but the distance and accuracy are near impossible to perfect. Therefore, if you are getting some nose down angles on some throws, you are on your way! 😊 Also, we are always willing to look at a video or two if you’d like some feedback/advice. Hope this helps, merci!
My brother throws all his drives from a stand still and I dont. I only out drive him by 20-30 feet on average and he is more accurate than I am with my run up. If it works for you, do it.
Thanks so much! It's really given me a lot more confidence as a disc golfer, because I can often throw just as far or even father than everyone else using my method! Although I would like to try to try the x-step since the standstill can hurt my lower back sometimes. Glad it works so well for your brother!
hey there - really nice video - love the premise behind the whole thing - keeping it simple can get you great results! was wondering if you might be able to comment on the part after pulling through close to the chest ("power pocket"?) that gives you that power...from different videos and descriptions out there, i have heard people talk about your arm being like a whip, but also like a spring. when i think of whip, that sounds like not really using arm muscles and letting your body generate the power and then the power traveling down your loose arm to the point where the disc leaves your hand. when i think of a spring, that sounds like somehow building up tension in the forearm (when you spin through the power pocket?) and then using muscles in the arm to push back against that force and propel the disc forward to the point of release. these seem to be 2 different ways to generate power? if this is making any sense (sorry about taking so long to get to the point!), would you be able to comment on what you're doing? whatever it is, you make it look so easy - kudos!
I know exactly what you are saying and it would really help to have a consistent visualization. Are we winding up a spring or using a whip? The two don't really go together.
The power really comes from the ground up, and your throwing arm is suppose to act like a whip (no tension or pulling through. Best piece of advice that works for us is concentrating on the opposing arm instead of the throwing arm. Instead of thinking of pulling back your right arm, think instead about pulling back your left shoulder as if you are showing your back to the audience (creating a coil), and then unwind starting with your legs 👍
Thanks so much! Yeah I can max out around 300, especially using my Mystere or lately I've been working on the Leopard3. They're great for the perfect S shot. It is a very helpful way to throw when you're not able to step up!
Thank you! I do the standstill throw as well and I don't swing my leg much. My coordination isn't good bc of a TBI. How far do you throw it with that approach? I threw it twice at half speed and I noticed an improvement already
Thanks so much! :) Yep we're both high school teachers, so teaching to a video seems to work well for us! Although I do love teaching in front of a group of students :)
I got proof of my performance on my YT list. I need a coach in SE CO to see what I'm doing and adjust my standstill or equipment to where I can Tee off some serious distance. I want to break 300' (100m) consistently. I can barely get past 200' on any tee.
Work your standstill focusing on elbowing the door down then snapping rest of arm out I bet you get same or more distance just perfecting that. Simon and eagle have a great video on it
Thanks for the help/insight Tom! You are correct, however, for myself, it really depends on the throw and what disc I am using. Most of the time, I swing my back foot forward, especially with distance drivers. We discuss it in this video - ruclips.net/video/n6Lt_uDiQ5Y/видео.html
Care to elaborate? You are right, full power requires the x-step, but some people can’t or don’t like to do it. So for people who can’t, that’s who this video is for!
Hi Jaan, I know it's not the conventional way to throw, but I found the x-step challenging when I was a beginner. So, I tried just going back to the basics and focusing on my throw and not my leg movements - that's what helped me get better at throwing and increase my power. I am planning on working to incorporate the x-step into my repertoire this year though!
It's really great seeing some spotlight on standstill throws, I think it's something way to easily overlooked!

This is cool. Looks like she’s doing Tai Chi 🤙🏼😊🥏
My game changer was making sure my hand was on the outside of the disc, vs the front or front right. It puts it on a rail of accuracy. So I'm always looking for that.
Good tip!
Can you explain further what you mean?
@@victoriamc443 did you every get a answer?
pretty sure they mean imagine putting the disc in front of your chest and if it was a clock putting your grip hand where 10,11,12 o'clock would be until your elbow is at 90 degrees.
Have you seen our How to Get More Distance in Disc Golf video? Very helpful for teaching how to keep the nose angled downwards. Hope it helps! 👍
@@JustDisc Thanks so much for all the feedback! I appreciate it.
My brother throws all his drives from a stand still and I dont. I only out drive him by 20-30 feet on average and he is more accurate than I am with my run up. If it works for you, do it.
Exactly, whatever works best for you. Believe me, my wife can outdrive the men quite often! And besides, I’d take accuracy over distance any day 👍
Thanks so much! It's really given me a lot more confidence as a disc golfer, because I can often throw just as far or even father than everyone else using my method! Although I would like to try to try the x-step since the standstill can hurt my lower back sometimes. Glad it works so well for your brother!
Okay... but I'd really like to know how far YOU can throw with this method and how much of an improvement it has made.
hey there - really nice video - love the premise behind the whole thing - keeping it simple can get you great results! was wondering if you might be able to comment on the part after pulling through close to the chest ("power pocket"?) that gives you that power...from different videos and descriptions out there, i have heard people talk about your arm being like a whip, but also like a spring. when i think of whip, that sounds like not really using arm muscles and letting your body generate the power and then the power traveling down your loose arm to the point where the disc leaves your hand. when i think of a spring, that sounds like somehow building up tension in the forearm (when you spin through the power pocket?) and then using muscles in the arm to push back against that force and propel the disc forward to the point of release. these seem to be 2 different ways to generate power? if this is making any sense (sorry about taking so long to get to the point!), would you be able to comment on what you're doing? whatever it is, you make it look so easy - kudos!
@@JustDisc sweet - thanks!
Hi Lindsey, whats your max distance with this technique? I cant see because its too low res :)
She can throw anywhere between 275-300 FT. Hope it helps! 👍
thx
Not that its really important but how far is she throwing that way? Im curious because I see this being helpful for straight shots in the woods.
Of course it’s important, good question! She can max out her Mystere at around 300. It’s crazy the amount of power she can get!
@@JustDisc dang for real!
Thank you! She gets around 275-300 ft in a good throw 👍
@@JustDisc you are the best! I'm just starting it and I somehow got a birdie on a par 4 today. Usually I get a bogey or a double bogey
@@evanhiggins7298 Well done! Keep it up, and if you have any other questions, just ask!
wow, very articulate. is she a teacher, too?
Thank you! Yes she is, we are both teachers :)
Thanks so much! :) Yep we're both high school teachers, so teaching to a video seems to work well for us! Although I do love teaching in front of a group of students :)
Important to talk about the hip rotation. That's where most of the power comes from. Not the arm.
Very true! Power start with the legs and works it’s way up. Hip rotation is HUGE!
Whatever works. I don't move my feet much either. Accuracy is the most important thing anyhow.
Simon and eagle have a great video on it
LA fortune park ?
That’s right! 👍
@@JustDisc Really? That looks like Green lane sports complex in Paris, ON.
@@williampeters534 There are clips from both Paris and Caledonia! :)
i see ur rear foot stays planted, believe u r losing power potential, follow thru will take stress off planted knee and arm also😀
Thanks for the help/insight Tom! You are correct, however, for myself, it really depends on the throw and what disc I am using. Most of the time, I swing my back foot forward, especially with distance drivers. We discuss it in this video - ruclips.net/video/n6Lt_uDiQ5Y/видео.html
That's wrong... That don't give u the full power
You're right, steroids does, it you're not taking any you're not reaching that full potential, personal preferences, what are those!?
