This week I show you the start to finish process of redesigning and building the new basement bar. I walk through all the steps in the process showing you the before and after. I am really proud of the end result and hope you enjoy watching the video. I go through demolition, design, building cabinets, painting cabinets, installing a tile floor, installing cabinets, and adding in custom led lighting. It is quite the build!
Thank you for watching and hopefully you found the video helpful!

You weren’t kidding when you said DIY 😮 building your own cabinets and running custom LED lighting is next level - bravo 👏
Thank you so much! Really proud of how it turned out and happy to say I did every part myself 😁
Really is awesome. Watching your video to get inspiration for a new bar build in my barn/man cave. Can’t wait to get it started. Love the look of yours, Great job!
Absolutely stunning work sir, this video is criminally underrated!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it!
I don't have many wants or dreams but to have a beautiful bar in my basement is on that list; right next to buying a home. I'm not much of a drinker but I love community and there is nothing like having friendly neighbors over to watch the game and drink.
You hit the nail on the head 😁
Wow, Incredible job! I wish I had a quarter of your talent!
Love the lighting, especially the ones in the upper cabinet!!
Thank you! I really thinks it brings the build up a notch 😁
I love watching you work. Definitely wishing I had a garage and some carpentry tools.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! Start off small with just a drill and work your way up to larger tools as you need them
Absolutely incredible. Even at warp speed I learned a lot. I thought I was Mr. DIY, but your skills blow mine outta the water. The cabinet finish is excellent. Well done. Tom.
Really cool looking bar. The design and quality is great.
Looks amazing good work!
Amazing job!!
Awesome job! I am envious of your DIY skills!!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it 😁
Super professional, great job man!
Thank you, really appreciate it!
Fantastic job.
Wow that looks stunning. Great video
Thanks so much, really appreciate it!
Wow. The skiiilllzzzzz, dude. Incredible and admirable.
Thank you so much!!
I am so happy I subscribed! Thanks for posting. Awesome! Love the track too!
Welcome aboard and thanks for watching!
I like how your blending into the color scheme of the bedroom you remodeled which ever one you did first great job.... The bar looks more modern the other was outdated one thing lacking was a beer tap just an idea....
Great eye! I try to keep the design consistent throughout the home while still making each room unique. I built the bar first and then the bedroom. And great idea with the beer tap!
That’s amazing!!!!!!
Thank you!!
Excellent job...some mad skills on exhibit there!
Thank you, really appreciate it!
Looks great!!!
Thank you!!
Admired! Very well done 👏
Thank you!
Some great inspirational ideas here… thanks.
I am not of fan of paneling … was surprised to see you leave them after the very contemporary design build.
To each their own.
Thank you! It’s a lake house so it fits the vibe and we want to keep some of the character of the original home
This has been a great inspiration!! A one of one. Will always trump someday store bought!! 💪🏾💯❤️🔥🔥
Thank you so much! I totally agree 😁
I can't belive he used an iron to mount on the edges..next level DIY
Haha! It’s called iron-on edge banding. It’s common practice to use an iron to melt the glue and adhere the edge banding
Love it! Great job :-D
Thank you! 😄
Looks really good enjoyed watching
Thank you so much!
some neon lights in the wall football jerseys and a guitar will turn it mad crazy if i may object
Great idea!
awesome job!!
Thanks!
Amazing video! I’m a home DIYer and hobbyist woodworker and I love all of the craftsmanship but what I most appreciate is the video editing! That stuff is way beyond me. Great job!
Thank you very much! I’ve slowly learned video editing over the years. I started back in middle school editing small class projects for fun and now I run a RUclips channel 😅 It does slow down the project a bit having to film everything and then the edits can take awhile as well. But the finished product of both the project and video as documentation continues to fuel the passion! Thanks for watching 😁
@@GoldenKeyDesign Don't show the finished product until the end.
@@jasonrogers1576 That's what keeps viewers watching to the end of the video! Attention spans are much shorter than they used to be - got to keep them entertained!
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
AWESOME!!!!! I just will not building my own cabinets. I don't have them skills.. lol Will buy them instead..
Thanks for watching!
great job
Thank you!
Amazing 👏🏼
Thank you 🙌
Amazing work
Thank you!
A
mazing!!
Mad skills!!!! :O
Thank you!
Inspired now, shit I could do that, but the problem for me was that I didn’t know any of it ahead time. Seriously nice work and it came out really cool looking too. Cricket n Beer time, crank up the tunes!
Looks awesome. Are there other things you had considered with this space? How did cabinetry stack up to your expectations going in to it?
Thank you so much! There was a bar here before with water lines already run in the cement subfloor so we didn’t consider too many other options besides a new and improved bar. We already have a TV/movie area but that would have probably been the only other possibility. The cabinetry was actually a lot of fun to build and they came out even better than I was expecting. Our kitchen was done by a custom cabinet shop and I’ve been told that my cabinets are of higher quality. The painting was time consuming and stressful but I’m glad I built them myself!
Really cool build, great job. Personally, I would have taken a little more time to float out the skim coat behind the TV.
Thank you! I see your point, but I actually really like the unevenness of it. The LEDs make it look 3 dimensional too
Great job🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!
I love it 😍😍😍
Thank you! I love it too 😍
Omg tell me you kept that amazing barracuda!
We did!
Hey brother, well made video. Can you please do a wall remodel?
Awesome
Thank you!
Wow! This is crazy amazing! Wish you can do something for me haha
Thank you so much!
I started bing watching your videos, they are so full of great content just had to subscribe (rare for me). Question, did you prime the basement ceiling prior to finish painting?
Thank you! And glad you found the other video on the ceiling 😁
Great build! I want to do the same thing. Did you have to secure the cabinets to the floor or are they just held in place by their weight?
Thank you! I have a whole series on this build with more detail. I would check out those videos but to answer your question - I glued a block of wood to the tile and fastened the cabinets to that
Niiiiiiiccccceeeeeee!!!!
Thanks!!
Very cool! Good job, just 1 thing I didn't like much, it's the background of the TV. It's like you didn't finish it. But overall very nice man!!!
Thank you! I like the textured look of the concrete. It probably looks a bit better in person, but I appreciate the feedback
@Golden Key Design based on everything that you did, I think that particular part will be indeed better looking in person instead of the camera. Thanks for your kind reply, btw!
Those counter top brackets look great. Could they work for a wooden counter?
Yes they could! Only thing is that they are not super strong. So if you plan to have a large overhang I would use ones that are more of a triangle shape as those are much stronger and can hold more weight.
U are amazing
Thanks!!
am the only one thinking that the old bar looks nicer? just needed some new paint! :)
Looks awesome. Are you leaving the wood paneling long term?
Thank you! Yes, I am leaving the wood paneling as it goes around the whole basement. It would be a ton of work to take out and replace, and it’s a lake house so it fits the aesthetic. We try our best to keep some of the charm from the original design with each renovation. Thanks for watching!
Great work. I am curious tho, why the extra large cut out on that second tile. 4:03
It looked like it clear the plumbing with a relatively small one
Thank you and good eye! The concrete was built up a bit around the plumbing so I had to cut the tile extra to make sure it would still lay flat. It all got covered up by the cabinets so it didn’t matter all that much.
I find incredible your skills.
I would love to try to do something like this, but I don't have any skill like you.
Btw how long did it take to you, from start to finish (beside 3d design)
music on point
I try to find the best royalty free music I can! Thanks for noticing 😁
Awesome work! What material did you use for the countertops?
Thank you! I used quartzite and we love them!
Awesome. What type board did you use for the cabinets?
Thanks! I used 3/4” baltic birch plywood with 13 plys. I recommend buying it from a lumber supplier rather than a big box store as their quality of wood is subpar. Also, I have an entire video on how I built the cabinets if you’re interested 😁
I was looking for some ideas on my DIY basement, 😂🤣 as soon as Bro started building his own cabinets I knew I was out of my league and watching for entertainment purposes only!!
What material are you using for the cabinet wood?
3/4” Baltic birch. Check out my dedicated video on building the cabinets
how can I find the whole series of this build with more details
I have about 10 episodes documenting the entire renovation step by step. Check out our channel 😁
What tips would you give to someone that wants to start doing DIY projects. Also where did you learn all this? Seems like you have a very broad knowledge of electrical work and construction. Is it your profession?
I learned everything I know off of RUclips! Been following diy and building channels since I was in middle school. Slowly picked up tips and tricks. If there is something I didn’t know, I watch a RUclips video haha! So now I try to pass on that knowledge via my own RUclips videos 😁 I’m actually a CPA and worked in strategy consulting before quitting to run GKD full time. My advice would be to watch a ton of videos (mine are great 😂) even if it isn’t something you need to know. You’ll pick up little tricks along the way that you can utilize on different projects when the time comes. Invest in some decent tools. I’m a Dewalt guy, but I hear Milwaukee is great too. Get a drill/impact driver and maybe a circular saw. You can get by with just that for awhile. Only buy more tools when the project requires it. That’s how I started and slowly amassed quite the collection haha! Hope that helps!
Amazing job! What's the size (length & depth) of the bar?
Thank you! The bar is 10’ by 7’
You forgot the kegerator! 🍻
😂 How could I forget?!
Literally amazing work right here people spend so much money on prefab stuff and labor, how much do you estimate you saved ?
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! Material cost for this project was roughly $7k but almost half that was for the countertops. If I bought custom cabinets and had them professionally installed, it would have probably cost north of $30k including all the led work too. So quite a big savings 😁
@@GoldenKeyDesign that’s fantastic, gathering ideas for my own house thank you !!
What's the name of the designing software that you used to create the design for this bar?
It is called SketchUp and is free to use 😁
Great work!! Very profesional👌 ¿Do you know where i can find a job in the career as a carpenter? I'm 21 years old and i was looking to get a job in there but can't find nothing
Thank you! I would search job boards online for apprenticeships
What size cabinets are against the wall and how much space do you have in between the cabinets?
Thanks
The cabinets are all 18” deep and the gap between the cabinets is 36”. Hope that helps! I have a full video on building the cabinets and the install if you’re interested in more info
@@GoldenKeyDesign
Thank you for responding. My wife found your page because we are making some upgrades to our existing basement bar
@@mrcosna1 Very cool! Good luck with the project!
The 90's side panel makes is look so much worse but nicely done.
It’s a lake house so it fits the vibe
Ok, building your own cabinets.... respect!
Thank you!
question for you, how long did this take you. and did u do this on weekends only or just when u had time.
This took about 2 months from demolition to completion. I work on RUclips full-time now so I work throughout the week and some weekends. But I also have to film everything and at the time was editing/publishing a weekly RUclips video so that adds a fair amount of time to the project.
Am i the only one who also liked the before one!
You might be 😂 The tiles were cracked and the sink was small. Not to mention how awkward it was to access the cabinets from behind the bar. To each their own though 🤷♂️
nicely done, although I don't think it's been 'Google" Sketchup for like a decade or so lol
Thanks! Didn't realize they changed the name. I started using it so long ago haha
What would be a good estimate on the material cost without adding the countertops to the price
All the plywood was about $2,000. The rest of the materials I would estimate at $1,000. So $3,000 total. In my mind that’s very affordable given the end result, but it’s a lot of labor 😅 Hope that helps!
@@GoldenKeyDesign bruh the labor itself probably $10k worth
What is total the size of bar area?
It is 10’ by 8’
Why type of wood is that?
Plywood or mdf?
All the cabinets are made out of 3/4” baltic birch plywood 😁
@@GoldenKeyDesign thanks i appreciate
How much for somenthing like that
Material cost was about $7k. Half of that was for countertops though
Fucking amazing!!!!
Thank you!
Do you have the sketchup file
I don’t, but all the videos in this series detail the steps pretty clearly if you want to recreate the bar 😁
How much was the total $ build
It was about $7k in materials but about half that was countertops
How's the sonf at 1:40 called?
How’s It Supposed to Feel by Neffex
If you swapped the before and after photos, it would be much better
I respectfully disagree 😅
My issue is I have none of these tools 😂
The walls ruin it 😬
I was really thrown off when you caulked your new drain as a means of water tight connection to the existing drain. Good luck in the future if you have to replace all of those base cabs because of a plumbing shortcut going against code. Caulk is not a permanent water tight connection and has to be maintained after a period of time.
The home was built 40 years ago and the I could not find a fitting to connect to the ones they used in the concrete. The silicone will last a very long time and this sink is not used that often. There is also an access hole in the base cabinet that I can easily access the drain and make any modifications if necessary.
Your channel would be a thousand times better without the bad music and hyper time lapse montages.
I seem to be doing alright, but appreciate the feedback. This is a dedicated timelapse video as stated in the title so not sure exactly what you were expecting 😅 If you want more detailed info, I made multiple videos dedicated to each step in the process of building the bar
@@GoldenKeyDesign I realized that after I made the comment, that there were other videos with the detailed segments. Just giving u feedback.
It went from a VERY Nice bar to a Ugly modern not a bar.
The old bar was falling apart with cracked tiles, a small sink, and it was very difficult to access given it being on an angle. I’d take the new bar in a heartbeat over the old version. But to each his own I guess 🤷♂️
