- I love the first Splinter Cell, it's one of my all time favorite games. I've beaten it on PC and Xbox, and I've never touched it on PS2 or Gamecube. Well since later Splinter Cell titles were so different, I decided to see just how different the first Splinter Cell was between consoles.. Check it out as I compare and discuss the differences between the different versions.

RookerVision - Gaming Videos have you done a Tomb Raider comparison? That would be cool.
@RookerVision - Gaming Videos Will you do a follow up video that shows a comparison of this game on Xbox One X vs original Xbox and PC?
What's the name of the song you used for your intro?
How are the gamepad controls on PC?
I remember my grandfather buying it for the PS2 and playing it until he couldn't get past a guard and handed me the controller. That was how the game was introduced to me. Awesome comparison video.
That is an elite level memory.
This is some serious research. Nice work
Thank you very much
+RookerVision - Gaming Videos hey u need a code for the door for or every door and if u just leave bodies on ps2 they trigger the alarm
when I was 5 my dad let me play this game on xbox but I only got past the tutorial mission lol.
Are we the same person???
Thatbossdrifter 18
Me too!
Xbox looks like a 360 game damn.
Look at Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on the XBOX, when I first got it I thought it was incredible, then i played the version my friend had on his PS2 and maybe laughed at it and he maybe got a bit jealous :P
Sean Kretschmann Xbox was wey more advanced console than ps2 i dont know why ps2 got more famus honesty but we must renamber that at time ps2 was first console and the first with a dvd player as well i know some people who only bought one just to play dvd they didnt eaven give a damn about games. But xbox was a true gaming console it had the power and potential.
Yes the same thing happen with PS3, people start to buying that console because sony includes a Blu ray incorporate len. I can't understand today how the people bought a PS4 over Xbox one X that console is more powerfull, a "compact" pc like his ancesters.
Isai Perez ps4 has just the better exclusive games for this reason, it sells much better i have a ps4 pro am absolutely satisfied with it but i think the xbox one x really great what it is hardware technically.
Sucks that Microsoft has lost their way..
The days where ubisoft loves PC Gaming...
LOL, these ports are decent, not amazing.
@Basement Dweller They have improved a lot. The "Ubi Soft ports are shit" has become an overused meme.
@@ghost085They haven't. Consoles are really close to pc in terms of architectures and power (at least mid-rante PCs) so it's easier to upgrade graphics for the PC version. In the Xbox/PS2 era games weren't made for consoles, they developed the big (PC) version and then downscaled to console level. That's the reason PC games were so many leagues beyond console versions. Downscaling allows to have a perfect version in every machine but requires to remove features that many times are too vital in the game code and it becomes a nightmare to port to lower machines. Programing for console and then upscaling makes it much easier but upscaling is impossible to reach PC's top quality as the game core has its limits.
@@ghost085 Ubisoft and EA do get a lot of shit on the PC but over the last few years, probably with the start of this gen of consoles, their ports of games on the PC are a lot better than they used to be but they still take a lot of shit because both of them are still greedy, especially on dlc contents.
I'm sure I also heard that both companies make more money on the PC then consoles thanks to them having their own store fronts.
This was back when Ubisoft and EA used to make multiple ports for each platform, to fit the specific platform's tech. gotta love it, when developers used to care about their product.
I had an original Xbox. Still remember playing this game for the first time, and being absolutely blown away by the lighting and use of shadows in the actual gameplay. That paired with Halo CE absolutely blew my tits off at the time. Still loved my PS2 also, but it showed Xbox was a contender.
I have played this game on all platforms besides the Xbox version. Seeing these differences makes me want to do a full comparison detail of this game between ports.
I’m doing the same thing for manhunt 2 right now!
6:32 that chicken design is inspired by a Quebec bbq chicken restaurant chain called St-Hubert.
One thing I especially liked about the Xbox version is the bonus video features where they interviewed developers as well as some of the in-game characters inside the Montreal Ubisoft offices. It really ads a fun, human touch that makes you understand and appreciate the game more. In one of the videos, you see a random employee walking in the background, unaware they're filming, notice the camera, mouth the word "Tabarnak" (fuck) and walk away.
Ha, this was the 1st Xbox game I played. Man, didn't know there was that many differences between the versions. And do The Warriors next.
+mitu123Copper Yeah there's even more on those levels I didn't show. Lots of little stuff.
+RookerVision - Gaming Videos will you do warriors
Technically the DLC missions for the xbox version can also be obtained from the "Rainbow Six 3 Companion Disc", a promo disc that had a demo of Rainbow Six 3 and the DLC for Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell. Obviously it's little more than a curiosity today, but I'm a pedant so I felt it was worth pointing out.
+Glowsquid That is good to know.. Wish my websites I looked at stated that. lol.
Does that demo disc work on 360 or would I need to buy an original Xbox for downloading the DLC Splinter Cell missions from that disc?
I don't know for sure (don't even own a x360) so don't take my words as gospel, but I own a similar disc for MechAssault 2 and it's just a loader that launches an installer for the DLC. If the "demo" sections for og Xbox games that are compatible on the X360 works, I don't see why the RS3 disc wouldn't.
+Marco Hidalgo No, it doesnt
Captain Night Dammit time for me to look for a used original Xbox at a good price. That would have to be the best way for me to experience these DLC missions.
Great review, love this game!
GOOD LORD, FISHER!
Still amazes me how powerful the XBOX was VS the PS2.
great video!! its so weird because I played this on the ps2 but I remember it mostly like it was on PC... maybe because I looked at so many splintercell videos on pc
Phenomenal video. Thank you for putting together. However, the title said it was a graphics comparison. I skipped over it multiple times because I didn't know it was actually a comparison of the differences between all the versions of the games. That's much better than a simple graphics comparison.
Cool video, but did you notice that currently on Pc it's impossible to get the same shadow quality as the Xbox version?
The reason is "Stencil Shadows" The two first Splinter Cell used an exclusive feature on PC and Xbox at the time called "Hardware accelerated Stencil Shadows". It was a feature baked at the hardware level on geforce 4, 5 and maybe one more generation after that. It was then replace by more efficient solutions on a software level. The consequence is that support for Stencil Shadows was dropped and with somewhat recent hardware you cannot have all the Stencil shadows properly working on PC. it's also absent from the following remasters of the game.
So the only way to get all the eye candy regarding lighting and shadows is to play the game on the original Xbox. I thought it was a fun little anecdote ^^
You can get the shadows working with this, and pandora tomorrow using a program called dgvoodoo2. The instructions are on the pcgamingwiki.
Actually SC on Xbox and PC use Nvidias proprietary Shadow Buffer technique which is not the same as stencil buffer shadows. But you re correct that this feature was baked i to to the Xbox and the GeForce 3 PC graphics cards of the time. The Gamecube also supporter shadow mapping in hardware but few developers used it.
Dude, you're doing exactly what I would be doing with a channel like this! Stellar work, keep it up!
Thank you my man. It's exactly why I did it, I always wanted to see comparisons of older games.
Will you do one for Pandora tomorrow and chaos theory as well? This was the most all encompassing and comprehensive splinter cell comparison video I’ve seen. Great job!
you went into depth with this and it was explained fantastically i had the ps2 version and it had nothing compared to the original xbox and pc this deserves a like
Great videos, bro!, Splinter Cell series always better on Xbox than PS2... (Next video, the Warriors!
+Luis Galviz c Yeah I agree, always better on Xbox.. Thanks for watching
Very informative video just like all videos here, I don't know any other comparison channels like this
Well done
Where's our Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory comparison?? I want it!
I just subscribed. Can't wait for more retro content.
Odd. I remember playing Splinter Cell at a friends house on PS2. I then bought it years later for myself on Xbox. Now that you mention the differences, I can recall the subtle changes. Funny how I never noticed them till now
"Subtle"!? The Xbox was FAR better
I owned ps2 version and while it was well made, xbox version is like night and day difference. Very drastic especially how light and shadows are displayed
So far I loved your content bro and I hope over the upcoming months you continue to grow bigger and create a community to help your channel becomes successful
+kickass6936 thank you. I hope to grow and get bigger too.
this work is really good, you´re a good youtuber... already suscribed men, congrats!, keep it up
I think I've asked for a Warriors Side by Side once or twice so that's definitely my pick. Keep up the great work dude!
+Heisenberg I felt it was time to offer it, since you weren't the only one who asked me.. lol.
cool video, I remember when the PS2 port was launched everyone was impressed that the game was possible on the PS2, but, some screenshots made clear that it was a significant downgrade... also, the Gamecube version looks like a victim of the PS2 version, and the level design changes are due to memory limitation and nothing else for the most part....
And the Mini-Disc had limitation
PS2 version a hybrid of Xbox and Gamecube. The game got a bit butchered to make it run. Gamecube version was a custom build of the game specific for the console, and it was much better than PS2. Slightly altered story and levels, but it works, looks, and runs much better than PS2. Neither are as good as the Xbox, but if you want a copy of it and don't have PC or Xbox, Gamecube is definitely the better choice.
+geeknproud321 plus the 60fps on GameCube unlike the Xbox port
Captain Night
Xbox wasn't a port. It was the original version. But yes, you are right, Gamecube was 60FPS while Xbox was 30FPS. Overall though, Xbox blows it away. PS2 however, is by far the worst. It has a few features from the Xbox but uses Gamecube level layouts. The levels changed weren't as well thought out as the Gamecube version. Bad loading spots, different quick save areas, controls, etc. It also had muddy graphics and it had bad framerate issues. Gamecube was a much better port, and fixed some of the PS2's issues and ran and looked a lot better. The fact that Gamecube was an enhanced port of the PS2 version was advertised at the time. The devs themselves said it was the better version.
Idk why didn't they just port the Xbox version for the GameCube cuz the GC was almost as powerful as the Xbox
I really appreciate your work , you really do research .
Thank you for this analysis Rookervision. I thought it was the same on all platforms.
4:24 Total speculation here but I would assume the change from a ledge jump to having to use the pipe to get across would have something to do with ram management. Maybe using the pipe gives the game a prompt to get rid of previous level data and load in new data as the PS2 and GC only had 32mb of ram vs XBOX's 64mb (if I'm remembering correctly)
That's correct...partly. PS2 & GC's 32MiB RAM were the common RAM we use today (32MiB for CPU, other memory for GPU, another memory for sound...those consoles had much more than those 32 MiB). Xbox had 64MiB but it was all unified RAM so all components shared that memory. Programmers could decide how much of that RAM would be used by each component. Sometimes CPU might use 50MiB leaving just 14 for video and audio, other games could use just 20 for CPU and those spare 44MiB could be used by video and audio.
The PS2 and GC versions already have segmented levels, i think they made it this way because the jump on the OG version was a bit tricky and misplaced
didn't know there were so much differences in each versions. I have the game cube version, but I think i'll try the xbox version. Very good comparison review.
Very indepth and well made. Do Warriors next.
This explains a lot.
Nice job!
Amazing Videos i really enjoy this type of videos Please do resident Evil 4 :)
The best part about this game is that's available for free on PC on Uplay this month, and it also comes fully updated so you get the bonus missions without having to find downloads online!
@Hussy, no.
Awesome video man really interesting
What cables did you use for the gamecube? The original cables in box or more expensive ones like component or new GC hdmi adapter?
Just a heads up.
Nobody mentionned that the bonus missions are included in the Xbox One backwards compatible digital release. It's also One/Series X enhanced which is a serious contender vs PC
Do The Warriors next please! I hope you can do a comparison for a WWE game in the future since the conventional comparison channels ignore those games.
I actually played PS2, when I played PC it was quite different, especially when I saw Chaos Theory, which the graphics were INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT :O
Well Chaos Theory offers no real exclusive content on PS2 and GC. Environment layout is quite different but PC and Xbox just have the best version. I DON`T say that about the first 2 and the fourth Splinter Cell games.
Wow, this side by side was very detailed and as aways very well done!
+Captain Price Thank you Captain, it was a fun one to do..
Great video . Love the Xbox!!!
7:24 That's clever, I was wondering what was the use of that freezer. I would assume they already had the ps2/GC limitations in mind
Nice video!
Good comparison!
Amazing comparison, do that takes time. I vote for The Warriors!
+LLKZR thank you for your vote.
This video is great but the biggest differences on PS2 imo is the obvious inclusion of Nuclear Power Plant (but that's an exclusive level so doesn't make sense for this comparison of course) but the Presidential Palace also has an entirely different first section on PS2/GC and one room's layout was mirrored for whatever reason even though the few rooms before it were more or less the same basic layout.
Anyway, I would love seeing a video that did a deep dive into all the little & big differences -- the exclusive level on PS2, the exclusive levels on Xbox/PC, the completely overhauled cutscenes, the death of a certain character being a bit different, the added dialogue in certain spots, etc.. You could probably get away with just playing PC & PS2 rather than playing all 4 versions again. Even weirder is that the PAL version of PS2 has a difference in Nuclear Power Plant in that the final section has another bit of unique music added to it where it's otherwise silent on the NTSC version though that's the only NTSC vs PAL difference I'm aware of.
Would be really cool to see that! But maybe that's just me lol
Damn.. you don't see games like this any more.
2:11 Wrong, there's a Tom Clancy bonus disk out there with the missions. I own a copy and I bought it a couple years ago.
Are there changes in the ps3 version? looks like the pc version, but anything else?
awesome video bro!
+Gamer4Derp Thank you my man.. Was a fun one to make.
Man i remember the music of this game, its so intense.🙂
3:58 can someone help me find the name of the music, that's probably one of my favorite SC themes
Nice to find out buying this game for PC was a good investment, might try to find Pandora and Chaos for PC too.
There’s actually a special complete edition on the Xbox that comes with the extra 3 bonus missions.
I've never come across it. Was it released in the U.S.?
@@Uniballa23 it’s the Xbox classics version
@@JamieRobert_ It looks like Xbox Classics is a PAL thing. Where are you located?
@@Uniballa23 uk
@@Uniballa23 but if you have it on Xbox backwards compatibility the extra missions are all there even if you had the standard OG copy
Those Splinter Cell DLC missions are available on old Official Xbox Magazine demo discs, so you can still install them on an unmodded Xbox.
They can't be installed on Xbox 360 though unfortunately, the only Xbox DLC disc Ive ever found that works on 360 is the bonus disc with the monk character for Jade Empire.
2:03 I know this is an old video but I thought some might like to know this for trivia's sake. Xbox Live WAS NOT the only place to get some of those extra levels. Back then there was a gaming magazine that had the Vselka Infiltratio mission on one of it's pack in demo discs (I forget if it was the official xbox mag or some thing else). I didn't have xbox live back then so that was the only way I got to play and dlc.
It was games like splinter cell, Halo, Project Gotham Racing etc that make the first Xbox really distinct from the other two consoles. Infact, all 3 consoles were very distinct from each other. It was a great generation for gaming because each system catered to a different style of gamer, and had exclusives that suited the console. Whereas today, the idea of exclusive games have gone out the window and its now a "play every game on any device" mentality, which is very boring and done soley for profit. Back then, if you could only afford 1 games console, you had to REALLY think about which one was best for you in the long term because they each offered a different experience. RE splinter cell, first time I played it was from a PC Magazine demo disc in 2002. My PC was running a Geforce FX 5700LE and a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 and I remember struggling to max the settings at 1280x1024 on my CRT monitor. The game looked REALLY good back then, and to be honest, sharpened up in HD it still looks great today.
What the hell mate, you NEED to do the TRILOGY on PS3.
PLEASE I NEED TO KNOW!
very good comparison, not like so many others which just turn down graphics on emulator and sell it as real console
And what about redesigned levels and missions bonuses in splinter cell trilogy?
Which HD version of the PS3 is based on the original version?
When I used to smoke. I'd "enter space flight" and play SC1 and 3. Was so fun!
5:12 ah yes, the maximum quality storytelling style
God damn everytime a video comes out like this I end up jumping on my xbox original to play the game that is shown in the video.
+IND4GR0V3 HAHA, nothing wrong with that, sometimes to play a great old game, you just need a motivator.. Glad my Side by Side can do it :)
+RookerVision - Gaming Videos Hey RookerVision remember me! Anyways are you in the middle of editing the next side by side or just doing the gameplay footage and I'm not trying to rush you, just saying.
Not me.
Yes, im here 6 years later, just to say the DLC of Xbox version came included (for free) in the Xbox One version of the game when your purchased it digitally or retail cd version.
btw the game only checks if the neutralised guard was properly hidden, another guards are only relevant when you're still in the area.
have you set on on pc version shadow resolution on high?
shadows quality eqaul to xbox version you can get only with geforce 3, 4 and fx series but projector one still looks quite good.
greetings from Poland :-)
dgVoodoo2
Small detail you missed (I think) but on the PS2 on the first level or any level fire, there is a heat wave effect moving off of the fire to give it that hot temperature feeling. That wasn't added on PC or XBOX. Doesn't make the game any better just an interesting bit of info.
This was one of my first game I ever played in my life
It may be childhood nostalgia speaking, considering I had the game on PS2, but I personally prefer the Gamecube/PS2 release. It's a little less detailed, yes, but it's cleaner, smoother and a little more gritty.
Loved this game and thinking about playing it on pc now
what video card did you used for PC new video cards does not support hardware shadows for this game and it had to be forced in software mode and software shadows are not as good as hardware shadows.
+SomeSome Gaming I used the gtx titan x card
+RookerVision - Gaming Videos that's why shadows and light look better on XBOX you have software mode forced since the technology does not exist any more on newer video cards. I have special oldschool PC for this kind of games with GeForce FX 5800 and with that card this game looks really nice on PC with same level of detail in shadows and lights as XBOX.
SomeSome Gaming dgvoodoo wrapper render splinter cell 1 shadows correctly on new hardware. I have just replayed splinter cell 1 on PC and it looks great. Just dont run MSAA in dgvoodoo settings
I dont remember if it was in this game also or another sequel, but in the CIA HQ level, i can recall it quite good which version was, shows a cut scene in the beginning of how Fisher infiltrates disguised in the HQ, unlike the other one version, where you need to infiltrate by yourself in the building.
In PC you need to infiltrate yourself, on PS2 you get the cutscene where he walks in with a false badge. Honestly the badge one seemed to make more sense.
the ps3 trilogy hd version are ps2 version or what?
Would I be the only one if I said the XBOX and PC lighting looks really darn odd compared to the Gamecube and PS2 lighting? I get that the XBOX and PC version has more effects but the lighting looks off to me (and yes I am used to the gamecube version since it's the one I played, later followed up by playing the other games on PS2).
I really need that 50 cent bulletproof ps2 vs original xbox graphics comparision here anytime please rooker vision gaming videos you really gotta make that.
WOW! I love your content, Like and suscribe =)
Thanks you. New video in works
2:12 Nice.I wish I had a modded Xbox.
(1) PC 1.0 Version changes with later versions in number of models and scenarios (1.0 have more objects).
(2) Gforce FX and GForce 6x versions natively run still shadows, modern drivers versions are emulated.
(3) At the time of launch maximum resolution of 1024x768, however the Gforce FX 5200 was playable at 640x480.
(4) the Xbox classic version the bricks have similar dot / bump maping (predecessor of the bump maping) in the texture of the bricks which the GF FX never supported and was never implemented in later revisions.
Excelente sigue asi!
Gamecube is missing sone shadow effects compared to the PS2 version. Also the nvg and thermal vision modes look better on PS2.
You should have done this as well for Rainbow Six 3 (Raven Shield).
I got splinter cell hd on ps3, im assuming its based off the original xbox,pc version?
I read it's PC ports for the HD collection
oh okay thank you for telling me! that's good because that means I have the definitive versions because I bought the trilogy :)
chrisbandicoot ps3 version are not good. Textures are altered and sometimes looks much worse, for example on xbox and PC some metalic textures are shiny, while ps3 version looks just like wood.in comparison. Also ps3 lighting system is downgraded compared to xbox and PC version. Not to mention framerate on ps3 is 20fps sometimes. It's one of the worst ports I have ever seen on ps3
Back then graphical differences were quite clear to see, they actually put more time to make each version look the best on each platform.
No. They were lazy porting to Gamecube. It could probably handle the game at max detail if properly optimized.
@@DominikSobolewski on PS2 too, it looks nearly the same (GC-Version). Xbox and PC looks best.
5:33 - When you are using lock-pick, you can spot blured background only on XBOX.
That desperate to make Xbox look less powerful than PS2?
Can you do GRAW?
5:26 this fact is completely false I just played the PS2 version and you can go back after loading screen.
What about the remastered version on PS3? Is it the same level design as ps2 and GameCube?
This is an old video. Made this before I showed off every version
RookerVision - Gaming Videos
Sorry I didn't check when this video was made.
Did you change the thumbnail? I swear it was different
Yeah. Doing an experiment. Seeing if I show that it is a comparison video that I could get more views. With just the box art, people might just scroll past it.
Does anyone know the very short BGM at the very beginning plz...
All I remember from it is that it is from RUclips music for creators and it was in the middle of a song. I lost the file. So no clue anymore.
@@RookerVision Anyway, appreciate it.
Actually you can still get the Xbox Live levels and download them to your hard drive without modding with the bonus disc
I play it on xbox and i love it :) thanks for the video
I played this on ps2 what do u prefer the most?
+Nikhil Theekshana Xbox, i play the four splinter cells In both ps2 and Xbox and i love the xbox. I also enjoy more the xbox edition of doble agent than the 360 edition
the bonus maps are avaiable if u have it on xbox one backwards comp
Wait why does this video have better performance but when I watch actual play through of the game it doesn’t I guess the only way to find out is to buy the GCN and Xbox versions and compare them side by side
2:07, wrong! I got the "Classics" version of Splinter Cell on Xbox and it includes those 3 maps on disc.
The original launch disc didn't have those maps. I have it. The "Xbox classics" version is a reedition and yes, there those maps are included.
I never understood how consoles worked out all of these discrepancies. Splinter Cell always looked better on Xbox, but MGS3 and RE4 looked as good as any of their contemporaries on Xbox, and GoW2 was pushing the limits of the PS2 in 2007. There's also Gran Turismo 4, which certainly was no slacker in the looks department.
Idk if it's just the certain details like AA and lighting that are just done better on Xbox compared to Playstation 2, or if the devs for those aforementioned PS2 games were truly working their asses off to push the console to their absolute limit.
Ps2 was struggling to run madden without slowing down it lacked ram it couldn’t mipmap like the Sega Dreamcast could do the only thing it had was the emotion engine and the best developers in the industry and the ability to play the Psone games we already owned other then that technically ps2 sucked
What happened to your splinter cell chaos theory comparison video?
I took my really old ones down, as they were made with poor equipment and poorly edited. I will re make them eventually. I'll have more free time in 3 weeks to do vids.
RookerVision - Gaming Videos ok then.
I remember the feeling that the technological leaps gave in those dates between DX versions and a number of shadow effects by polygons, it is a pity that the new generations cannot experience that kind of leap between technology generation currently, the changes between one new technology and another are increasingly imperceptible 😢
great game! nice video!
+TimoNFS thank you very much
Loved this on PS2, but man was it hard at times. The Xbox and PC versions look even better though.
+Gentleman Bentley I wish I played it on ps2 first, that way when I played the xbox version for the first time, it would of blown me out of my socks.
The Xbox/PC version is even harder than the PS2/GC version from what I saw. For example in the Abbatoir mission you can't shoot out the spotlights on the former but you can on the latter.
+Marco Hidalgo On PC/Xbox? I played both... the only version I didnt play was the GameCube.
I finished all Three Version....
+Marco Hidalgo On PC/Xbox? I played both... the only version I didnt play was the GameCube.
I finished all Three Version....
Captain Night Yeah on PC/Xbox you can't shoot out the spotlights in the Abattoir mission. On PS2/GC you can though. Also the GC version is very similar to the PS2 version but has some distinct differences. The PS2 version has the exclusive nuclear powerplant mission while the GC version has GBA connectivity and an exclusive non-lethal sticky bomb.
Grab Splinter Cell for free on Uplay this month!
And you probably need to grab GeForce3, 4, FX GPU to run it the way it's meant to be played, otherwise like me on GTX 660 2GB on PC and Nvidia 720M on laptop, no shadows and i can't f*cking play it because it looks like tomb raider 1.
+Nikolakoca1 my splinter cell 1 on pc looks great. I did a comparison of it.
All it needs is a video card that is GeForce 7000, Radeon X1000 or older. You can ebay these cards for cheap and they'll run it fine. It was also patched by a fan for newer hardware.
Shadows are fixed, but unfortunately there's still issues with the lightning effects.
I already install everything, shadows are fixed but lightning effects are not. Look this picture goo.gl/3XW7Ss . That's not how it's supposed to look.
