Keep in mind, the first Splinter Cell was absolutely revolutionary and technologically ahead of its time. The pace was slow even back then, so I see how it is barely playable for people used to modern games. Here's a hint: the pistol is almost never meant for you to kill people.
yeah. I just finished the game for the first time on hard difficulty and most of the times I used the pistol to either shoot lights or to lure enemies into places where I could grab them.
Yeah. Conviction has been compared to the Jason Bourne movies, and the Daniel Craig 007 reboot in that vein. Still, someone coming in after the fact once all of that is in the pop culture can be forgiven for not getting the timeline 100%.

You can play a huge part of conviction without killing anyone and sneaking past waves of enemies silently. It actually makes for a really interesting challenge and is a lot of fun.
Something that’s important to mention I feel is that if you leave the enemies undisturbed in Blacklist that will give you way more ghost points than knocking them out. It’s actually possible to beat the entire game only knocking enemies out whenever that’s stated to be your objective. All of the areas with standard sneaking (which is probably at least 90% of the game) can be snuck through with zero knockouts or kills.
@@saucyopath3613 Blacklist is more lenient on open combat, but that's not really what I want from a stealth game. Even then, I think Blacklist could have handled it better in a nunber of ways. I hated how floaty, slippery, and imprecise movement felt in Blacklist. TLOU 2, for example, does a much better job at balancing weightedness, precision in movement, and fluidity than Blacklist and as a result, stealth and combat in TLOU 2 is a lot more tense and impactful than Blacklist. Also, for a series like Splinter Cell, the idea has always been to minimize detection and casualties due to the politically sensitive geipolitical backdrop of the narrative. Blacklist really doesn't have this, outside of Grim's side missions. I could probably tolerate Blacklist's increased aggression more if the game gave detections and aggression more consequences so that aggression feels more like a calculated risk rather than "another sick playstyle, bro." The Dishonored and Deus Ex series do a better job of this than Blacklist. The biggest problem with Blacklist is its lack of weight in movement and, by extension, lack of tension during stealth due to the lack of control while sneaking and lack of tension in combat because it's way too easy to just run around popping headshots or crouch-running and stabbing enemies. This is exacerbated by a checkpoint system which gives you a clean slate regardless of your previous detection status, thus absolving you of any consequences for aggression or detections. Really kills the tension, since you can essentially get away with doing whatever you want. Lastly, I'd argue that Blacklist gives the player fewer options on how to complete missions than CT and really only makes combat easier (combat us technically already viable in every SC game, just more so in Blacklist). There's no hacking, lock picking, turning defenses and turrets against enemies, no optional npc interrogations, no interacting with machinery to manipulate sound/sound masking, no creating puddles for enemies to step in for a group sticky shocker, etc. CT had a lot more environmental interactivity than Blacklist, and it really makes Blacklist feel unsophisticated, cheap, and generic in comparison. Blacklist sorely lacks in attention to detail.
I used to play these games as a kid so for me the OG first three games are the best, with Chaos Theory being perfect. You missed the best time to play old Splinter Cell trilogy - these games made such amazing impression back in the time with lightning and gameplay. You can't really feel it anymore as newer games are much more "fluid". To fully appreciate it you had to play it back in the day.
Honestly I only discovered the series recently and I find chaos theory holds up extremely well no modern game I’ve played has better mechanics. It just gives you so much variety and options while you sneak around and snap necks. All the game needs is some modern touches, better graphics and improved AI is all it really needs to be perfect as well as some slight touch ups on the grab and alert mechanics for the enemies but those are simple fixes.
@@Brother8237 in my opinion there are two reasons why playing CT feels like that. First reason being obvious - it's a damn good game. Second reason is the downfall of stealth genre. We didn't have many good stealth games since CT was released, yeah there is MGS series but it does stealth in its own way. Most modern games have dumbed down stealth elements that are being used as a support mechanic rather than main gameplay theme. It's quite sad, imagine a proper stealth game making proper use of modern tech like ray tracing. RT is a visual gimmick but I've always dreamed of Splinter Cell game adapting this tech as gameplay mechanic on the hardest difficulty level with enemies being able to see your reflex or spot ray traced shadows. It won't happen tho untill every single console and PC is able to run RT.
Splinter cell conviction is what brought me to the splinter cell series and I beat that game countless times and still go back every now and again for a ops mission
I’m surprised he didn’t mention the thing that mattered most to me. In Chaos Theory you could finally kill someone up close with one hit even if they saw you. In the previous ones it took two painfully long hits.
Personally, I'll place blacklist at the top. Hear me out. It's because I've completed every single thing there is in chaos theory. I can 100% bathhouse, I can ghost through all levels. Heck I don't even use quicksave a lot of times now. But in blacklist, I can pull out a loud pistol and just enjoy enemies die, cuz that's something different and better executed. I can be really badass, which is really fun. I'll admit, chaos theory has a better stealth, better mechanics related to a spy, but blacklist is just so damn cool
Splinter Cell Conviction would have been better as a 24 game, playing as Jack Bauer. I can't remember if it was Chaos Theory or Pandora Tomorrow, but if you used the Xbox microphone, the NPCs could hear you and your buddy talking when playing Co-op. Normally we would just use one person to lure the NPC, while the other used a sneak attack on them. Fun times.

The 1st and 3rd one are the best of the trilogy! (Could live with the bodies going through the walls on 1&2) The second one doesn't allow you freedom of environment(pre-determined environment), you cant jump/ambush your enemy, and you can't climb boxes in many cases to avoid detection, and in a number of cases sets alarms off even with you completely being in the dark! @@Novodip V2 double agent is basically more of chaos theory with the new mechanics of double agent. Highly recommend playing it, ps2 emulators can run it fine
Splinter Cell 1 was great. Your complaints about the 3 alarm system and the pistol, are kinda childish. The game meant to be played stealthily and as Lambert said during a briefing, "the pistol is the last resort". You don't need to hide all the bodies at all just leave them in a dark area (check the light meter if you already knocked out someone in a darker area then you don't have to carry their corps into a darker place, just don't drop them on another enemy's patrol route) and the alarm won't go off and on later levels you can always use SCK2k's snipe mode by holding breath to kill the lights or any guard from a distance. Even if the rifle is suppressed, the guards close to you, can hear the rifle shots so it is advised that don't use it near any guard. The pistol is more suppressed though so in close range the pistol is always a viable choice. Just take your time with it. Keep the knocking and killings to minimal and you'll get the fun out of that game. In hard difficulty Splinter Cell 1 needs a lot of patience in some areas and I enjoy that tension.
Exactly my thoughts! But I think this was strongly influenced by starting with Blacklist. Back in the days you had 3 pretty great stealth games and then suddenly one that was bonkers.
