Thank you my spouse passed away and not haveing the money to pay anyone to fix stuff I have to fix it myself everyone said the lawnmower was no good it's pretty much brand new the person that gave it to me rolled it down the levee and not to mention he's over 300 pounds takes some power to get him up a levee not only rolling down it with him lol he's alive not a scratch but the mower took the battle wounds only has one head light and hardly pulls any way no one knew what was wrong othe than the transmission was going out so this popped up on my line I'm going to try it just had to change the blade engaging cable so if it more than that I'll stop diving on it 200 isn't bad for a mower given to me ya know
Poor mower! 😆 And yes, with new mowers right now in the 3k range, anything less than 1k on repairs seems feasible! Plus, the older the better for mowers is my motto!
@MechaniChics thanks for making this video it was very helpful but in my situation after looking at other parts on the mower I figured out the problem and litterly beat them back in place since it had been flipped the mower was all out of line so the pulleys and every thing else was nit lining up after tightening all the nuts and beating out and lining everything up it runs great and fast still some more work needs to be done and I rigged up the engaging cable since there no money to buy another one I figured out my own way and it has successfully cut 3 acres of knee high grass you really never know what you can do until you have no choice but to figure out a way I will be watching for new videos you put out and thanks again very informative and easy to follow

I think to get that belt off on the bigger pulley you have to slacken the bolts on the right axle and it will drop the mower enough to get clearance of the belt. This was very informative. I just bought one of these in very good conditions so I'm just watching as much videos as I can to be able to service it when i run into problems
Well. Amazon lost my parts, bearings, pulley, my 7/8’s crows foot , but Amazon says will be here on the 30th. That pulley tension spring is a nightmare. Found a tool at Harbor Freight for that now. They had crows foot wrench’s up to 3/4 inch but to get to a 7/8’s , the kit was 60.00 bucks, no thanks. As far as dropping the axle, that crows foot will come in handy for getting that big pulley off just enough to clear the belt clearance. Like the lady says if you change the variable pulley, change the two bearings, SOP.
@@dwwmoon I just dropped a screwdriver down one of the holes on top of the pulleys so it would lock it in place on top of the transmission and used the regular 7/8 combination wrench and popped it with my hand and it came right off.
@@MechaniChics Yep, when I put everything back together the first time, so I could at least finish the yard, I had no choice , dropped the screw driver in and muscle it loose, wish I had a picture of my arms after this deal, looked like I was in a fight with a bear. But, still didn’t get the yard done , before the bolt backed out again. Just pushed it back into the shed until parts arrive.
stand those bearings in a container of baby oil one half way. So the oil can seep in and the air seep out. Some bearings you can pluck out the seal with a metal tooth pic and pack with grease, then press with your fingers the seal back in. I did aircraft flight control bearings this way.
Good idea in a pinch, not a great idea if they've been running long enough to wear the balls or lock up. Bearings are cheap (for now), so I hand the old ones to the kids for fidget spinners.
Hey appreciate the detail and info. I'm working on a 2016 Bronco and they seem to have moved the variable speed pulley straight back from where it was on that 2013. Thus, the bolt that goes on the bottom is directly above the transmission with JUST enough room to get that bolt in (after it backs out). Now I'll need to see if I can get the cup and bearings out somehow too. I tried reinstalling with blue thread locker too, but it backed out again in about an hour or so per the customer. Have you had to replace these same parts on a 2016 or unit where the variable speed pulley is above the transmission? If so, any tips?
Yes, the first one I worked on was that design. I tried reinserting the center bolt but it only lasted a few rounds on the lawn. Ultimately I replaced the entire assembly with Troy-Bilt parts and the customer has not called back. The cup and bearings are easier to get out than the center bolt. I ended up loosening the transmission bolts that held it to the frame on the left side to give myself a little bit more wiggle room. Ratchet wrench that center bolt until time to torque it. It came from TB with red loctite. Even the slightest wobble from wear on that pulley will back out that bolt quickly. Also, I had the rear end up on cinder blocks for better access, and an extra set of hands for reassembly. Good luck, hope that helps!

I'll gather up a list of the parts and costs plus a labor estimate for the customer and see what they want to do. Easy enough to get these off to do variable speed pulley bearings?? And that pulley pulley your talking about to get off using brute force.. i just replaced one.. arse of a job.. undo the two nuts closest to the body that bolts onto transmission.. jack up on the FRAME so it gives just enough clearance to remove the splined spindle(large one) Its the only way as a chick you will get it out.. i just replaced that yesterday on an MTD which is basically the same just different colour that you are working on here!
If you're talking about the transmission pulley, I just took my impact wrench and took the nut off the top. It took about 15 seconds, no frame jacking needed.
@@captivatedbymandie on the MTD.. the transmission pulley you cant take off unless you do this.. well maybe you could force it and bend something.. but this is the least stressfull way of doing it with the least chance of breaking or bending anything.. trust me.. after fighting for over an 1hr.. it was easier too loosen the frame and do this.. job done in like 15 mins after doing that
Hey, that’s what I’m doing today, the drive belt got caught up on a stick & the belts got tangled up. What I found to add to the problem the variable pulley’s nut/bolt must have come loose & then the whole assembly just popped out of the hole. The bolt hole is kinda messed up on the threads , original is just gone . Question? What is the size & thread count for the variable pulley so I can get a new bolt & washer ?
I don't remember, honestly. I know it was metric. If you look up your model number and pull up the schematic, the part number will usually tell you the dimensions.
Ok , let me tell you how I get the 7/8 nut off the top drive pulley I use a grinding bit and just grove out the cross bar , it’s so thick it will not hurt it😊
I have a 2024 Troy Built Pony. The second time I cut grass with it, I made a sharp right turn and it slowed down. It appears to have lost the upper speeds. What would cause this? Please pm me directly about this
It sounds like the variable speed pulley is stuck or maybe the belt is twisted. Take a peek from the left side under the seat and you should be able to see it clearly.
@@MechaniChics the belt looked to be on correctly. I had washed the dust and grass off before putting it up. I used it after checking the belt and it worked like it should. Probably got stuck like you suggested due to a dusty area I had to keep passing over.
The drive belt goes from the bottom of the VSP to the engine crankshaft. The transmission belt goes around the transmission, VSP, and idler pulley. Usually if the transmission belt needs replacing, so does the idler pulley.
Hello I'm a subscriber I have a question for ya. I have A HUSKEE LT4200 I changed upper lower belts new variable speed pulley new springs. My question is the mower just creeps along everything works it mows ok just no ground speed. This mower is like new cond. It was given to me because they thought the transmission was bad but it was the vari speed pulley broke the weld gave way. I replaced that. But when you put it in F and release the clutch it'll give you whip lash. But it would take all day to mow my yard. Can you help me figure this out. I hate to junk it it's got less than 100 hrs. Thank you. JC
So jack up the end of the mower and put it in drive. If the wheels spin at normal speed when it has no pressure, but drag when on the ground with weight, it probably is the transmission. Check the drive belt pulleys and the spring tension to rule out mechanical failure first.
I just used a long closed-ended wrench and a pry bar on the last one like that. It can be done, but it takes a few cuss words and holding your mouth right.
Sorry that it locked up, but you're right, it's so hard to find a solid mower these days! I tell everyone to keep their old one and baby it as long as they can!

That's one way to do it, but I usually use a wrench. The torque isn't high on that nut.

When grass is foot tall it is hell on the drive belts and VSP

I had the same problem I messed with that thing for hours. Finally I sold it and got something with hyro trans 0 maintenance and they last a while
Well the dang rod was in way to put a socket on nut, berr grinder and easy to put a short socket on now

Remove new brging covers and pack with grease and install covers
They will last twice as long or more
I don't know about you, but once I remove those covers, they don't go back on for me.

6203-RS is the bearing number, but the MTD number is a 941-0600. Takes two.
