I think to get that belt off on the bigger pulley you have to slacken the bolts on the right axle and it will drop the mower enough to get clearance of the belt. This was very informative. Well. Amazon lost my parts, bearings, pulley, my 7/8’s crows foot , but Amazon says will be here on the 30th. That pulley tension spring is a nightmare. Found a tool at Harbor Freight for that now. They had crows foot wrench’s up to 3/4 inch but to get to a 7/8’s , the kit was 60.00 bucks, no thanks. As far as dropping the axle, that crows foot will come in handy for getting that big pulley off just enough to clear the belt clearance. Like the lady says if you change the variable pulley, change the two bearings, SOP.

After I replaced the spring on the brake arm, the spindle keeps grinding against the new spring making a loud noise and I don’t know what’s misaligned to cause the spring to be so close to the spindle to make it grind. Good job! Unfortunately I have the 2015 HD 44 model 991090 and have attempted to put on several 1/2 x 67 belts and they are too short. I have discovered the fastest and easier way to put the belt on is to disconnect the pro hardware as you showed and remove the right side fan/pulley and tension pulleys. 1. You can feed the belt through the right side fan hole between the tension pulley pivot bolt and tension pulley to the open area behind the left side fan and easily wrapped around fan and pulley. 2. Wrap belt around PTO pulley and use a medium binder clip to keep the belt from dropping off the pulley. 3. You can then install the belt on the right side pulley (last pulley as per Gravely instructions). Mine takes a 67.47" or a 4L68 (67.75") because the true 67" belts are too short and can't even be forced on. Hope this helps someone with the same model and year.

On a Briggs & Stratton single-cylinder, the model number will be engraved on the top of the overhead valve, near the headlight area. Many times you have to remove the grease to see it. Starters don't go bad super often, but with age they will. The model and type (6 digits, 4 digits, 2 digits) are needed to order parts, but the code will tell you the birthdate of the engine. The first two digits are the year, followed by the two digit months, and then the two digit date. The last two digits are the manufacturing facility. For these single cylinder Briggs, the hardest part of changing the starter is getting to the blower housing bolts on the backside. Especially on the newer ones, the housing is backed up to the fuel tank, which has to be removed to gain access.

I've done this many times. The worm gear and steering wheel are all one part have to be bought as one. I also replaced that ridiculous Philips head screw with a hex head bolt. And I shimmed below the bushing with a huge washer to get proper compression and no play in the up/down of the steering column. That bear claw gear is the stupidest design. It wears fast and I have to keep my tires over inflated to give it enough leverage for easier turning. If I had know of this issue I would never have bought it...but seven years later...here I am lol. Mines on a Troy-Bilt TB42...best mower ever...worst steering design on the danged planet!

I'm fairly certain this pinion gear was separate from the column. That Phillips head IS the worst idea ever. The end play for the steering is supposed to be there, I don't think I would shim it, but glad it's working for you. Long live old mowers!

Pinion is definitely a single piece with the steering shaft on mine...I've replaced it at least 3 times...lol. Keep up the great work and videos.

Your post on the tires makes me wonder if I can swap out larger front tires, or solid tires to avoid the inflation issue. Larger tires may make cutting blades not be even, so the solid tires may be a better way to go. The ride may be a little rough, but worth the trade off.

I didn't have to this time, but if I didn't have my power tools I probably would have.

I have the same model Troybilt. I replaced my steering rod screw with a bolt with the same threading instead to avoid any future issue with the screw head stripping during repairs. I ended up having to get the screw out with a pair of vise grips.
