My customer thought the STARTER was bad on his HUSKEE mower. NOPE!

  • The customer had reason to think it was the starter - it wouldn't turn the flywheel!
I took off the blower housing to get to the flywheel and check out the Bendix, only to realize I couldn't turn the flywheel by hand! It was locked solid!
Then I noticed the gas in the intake, and I knew what we had to do! Join me as I remove the spark plug and end up getting soaked!

My 83 year old uncle has a John Deere Sabre , that needs a starter, he doesn't know for sure what year it is, but he did say that he he thinks it has a 16 HP Briggs and Stratton engine, he doesn't know how to use the Internet for ordering parts, and I can not physically go help him with his mower,
But if I can find out what make or model of starter he needs then I will have one sent to him, I asked him if he seen anything with numbers on the engine, or any stickers, and he could not seem to find any,
Maybe someone removed them in the past, he said he bought the mower at a farm auction about ten years ago.
He did also say that he thinks it is a 42 inch blade deck.

On a Briggs & Stratton single-cylinder, the model number will be engraved on the top of the overhead valve, near the headlight area. Many times you have to remove the grease to see it. Starters don't go bad super often, but with age they will.
The model and type (6 digits, 4 digits, 2 digits) are needed to order parts, but the code will tell you the birthdate of the engine. The first two digits are the year, followed by the two digit months, and then the two digit date. The last two digits are the manufacturing facility.
For these single cylinder Briggs, the hardest part of changing the starter is getting to the blower housing bolts on the backside. Especially on the newer ones, the housing is backed up to the fuel tank, which has to be removed to gain access.
