Montego Bay’s Hip Strip Jimmy Cliff Boulevard - KINGSTON, Jamaica, April 2, 2019 (CMC) - Jamaica’s Culture Minister, Olivia Grange, says the renaming of Gloucester Avenue, in the tourist resort town of Montego Bay in western Jamaica, will inspire generations of singers, musicians and cultural practitioners.
Grange was speaking at the official renaming ceremony of the popular stretch, commonly called the “Hip Strip”, late last month. “Reggae music was able to propel Jimmy Cliff from Somerton District to fame, and name recognition, from Brazil to other parts of South America, to Europe, Asia and the home continent of Africa. I know that the significance of this renaming exercise will have great impact on many of our aspiring talents, and they too, in time, will be propelled to greater heights.
“As we, in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, continue to strengthen our musical heritage, through the re-telling of stories, the celebration of our pioneers and the establishments of circuits, where our people and visitors to our shores may experience the power of the heritage, it is my pleasure to rename Gloucester Avenue, in honour of this cultural icon,” Minister Grange said.
Cliff, who has received Jamaica’s highest honour, the Order of Merit, is best known among mainstream audiences for songs, such as “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”, “Many Rivers to Cross”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “The Harder They Come”, “Reggae Night”, and “Hakuna Matata“, and his covers of Cat Stevens’s “Wild World” and Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now”, from the film, Cool Runnings.
He starred in the film The Harder They Come, which helped popularize reggae across the world, and Club Paradise. Cliff was one of five performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

The last time I was there (2006) I stayed one night in MoBay. Outside my hotel, walking to downtown MB, I encountered hustler "Tony" who didn't like the fact that I didn't want to talk to him and told me that "I shouldn't be like that, man." I saw the Montego Bay library and went inside. How many tourists do that? On my way back a guy spotted me and struck up a conversation. He noticed me checking out the library and remarked that that's something tourists don't normally do. We chatted about this and that and I told him I appreciated the fact that were just having a genuine, natural conversation and money wasn't involved. Then he said he was going to ask me for a tip!

Dats a monumental effort to do these videos my brother I av walk that avenue lots and lots of times for fun I av work at a few hotels on that avenue years gone by including margaritaville building doing renovation painting av swim at doctors cave beach a couple time u av to pay to enter to swim but I was just supporting my local economy I love de avenue was nice

Brought back memories, i stayed at the Casablanca beach club hotel back in 94,loved it had some good days with Winston the security guard, and godfrey the life guard at the hotel, i would get them drinks as it was all inclusive,and have a smoke with godfrey. 🇬🇧👍

There is a very old Jewish graveyard at (I believe) around the 2:20 mark, it would be an interesting short Walk By and could be a good historic attraction near the Hip Strip. Thank for the tour, lovely memories of that place, the food, and most importantly the beautiful Jamaican people.

I loved the video but I’m saddened by all of changes from when I was there. It seems so commercialized now. I loved the little mom and pops stores hotels and bars. The white man has made it like America. However it made me miss yall so much. Being there in mobay was the best time in my life. I will be back. been there 3 times in 2019. the tourist belt is the best areas. overall, jamaica has amazing landscape, jaw dropping water falls and very social people. all the women got azzzzzz!!

That's a great walk to see since I have only ever gone from the airport to Negril in the past, and now I can see some of what I have been missing. That beach towards the end looks fun to swim in, is there no charge for that one? Bless UP!

Hey Arthur. I really can't say. I live over 100 miles from there and its not a town I frequent alot. You could try to visit the websites/social media pages for the Hotspots to see whats happening

oh man...there is a few great onces but honestly for us we never stayed at any of them here on the hip strip....so i couldn't give you a personal recommendation
