      The perfect answer for when they ask what you're up to or what's going on...... that and the answer I don't know, I always tried to keep in mind when an officer approaches me is because he thinks I am a criminal and it solidifies my suspicions about his thoughts of my character when he wants to know my name and or see some ID. And then I let them know that I'm not a criminal and I have no wants or warrants and if they run my numbers they are calling me not only a liar but also a criminal and that is not respectful so they can expect no respect from me.

    Some people probably wonder “why not just answer questions?”
    First reason is because you don’t have to. But also as this guy knew and showed, cops never just ask one question and go on their way. They are always motivated to keep a person talking until they can find any reason to detain and arrest them. So there’s no reason to bother answering any questions. When a cop asks you questions, never assume they are on your side

Of course all of the lights are on with the store locked up as I had headphones in listening to music while working. Because of my headphones, I didn’t hear them apparently knocking on the door. You’d think half of the department showed up trying to break in because it was “weird” that I would do that and was in regular clothes since it was 3am. Yes, I broke in just to stock their shelves for them.

      @@darlaherbst5929; You’re telling me not to speculate? Seems to me, you’re the one speculating by implying what the citizen “should’ve done.” I’m merely pointing out that if the business owner didn’t have any obligation to open the door and address the officer, what legal authority do they have to press the issue? That’s why I asked, at what point do the officers maintain the right by law to investigate further if the man DIDN’T open the door to address the officer’s inquiry? A business is the same as a home. It’s private property. I’m not saying the officer is wrong for wanting to find out if everything was okay. I’m saying, it’s quite clear that there wasn’t anything particularly suspicious about people remaining in a closed business after hours. I agree with you on the grounds that simply complying with the officer most likely would’ve avoided the altercation, but the business owner chose to exercise his rights, which at the end of the day, is justified because of our constitution.

    • @seanmichael8202
      @seanmichael8202 3 года назад +3

      @Kevin The Dog; As I’ve stated, it’s almost always likely that compliance with police during consensual interactions lead to peaceful resolutions. But “almost always” doesn’t cut it for some people. Myself? I support law enforcement and for the most part, give police officers the benefit of the doubt when interacting with them, which means I’ve never had a problem with identifying myself. However, that doesn’t mean I trust each officer I come into contact with. The citizen in this situation probably has a different view, if I’m going to assume his position considering the events that played out in the video. With that said, I’m merely pointing out that the business owner was within his rights to do what he did, and furthermore, wasn’t obligated to even address the officer when he showed up. So, while it may be frustrating for some people to watch the guy challenge the officer when he DID address him, he was doing nothing particularly wrong. He was asserting his rights to limit the information he felt necessary to limit. And again, since the interaction played out as we saw in the video, any scenario we assume would take place based off of our opinions, are merely that: assumptions. There a few avenues that this interaction could’ve gone down, but the fact that all it took was a random local patron, who knew the business and apparently the owner, to tell the officers that it was in fact the guy’s business, to me, shows the attitude of the officer who initially confronted the business owner, to be unwarranted. It was pretty obvious the business owner was the business owner.

    • @alexs.818
      @alexs.818 3 года назад +2

      @@seanmichael8202 also there’s a growing mistrust of police these days. People may not choose to identify themselves because they fear the police may use their identity to harass them in the future. That is pure speculation, but with very powerful police unions protecting officers’ every movement even if unlawful, pretty much gives officers the green light to do whatever they want. Corruption, false accusations, and unconstitutional detainment are rampant, which explains why more and more people are choosing to no longer ID themselves because they don’t know how that info will be used.

      Being a cop is almost like the military. There are the obviously required schools. THEN there is a probationary time learning to incorporate those skills with a seasoned officer. Therefore, "school" is slightly better than 1 year of dedicated effort. In the military, there is a reason why specialty schools are segmented. This is to allow an education to take place, then allow it to sink in, all in stages. In the dancing world, you attend a class on a style and get taught a technique. After the class is normally open dancing to the public allowing the students to figure out where the techniques apply, tempo, adjustments, etc.

    The amount of bad cops who say, “I just want to make sure everything/you’re okay” is astonishing. Because it never ends well, they always ensure it’s not okay once they get involved.
    “Are you okay?”
    “Yes”
    “Not on my watch!”

      I think it's a genuine statement. They wanted to make sure the store wasn't being robbed. And unfortunately, once they started investigating, they were liable if it *was* being robbed and let the robbers get away with it without doing due diligence to verify their identities. I wouldn't be surprised if they could be sued by the store owner if they let robbers go simply because the robbers said, "Yes, I am the store owner, but I am not legally required to share my identity, so go sit in your car and try to figure out if I am who I say I am while we finish up in here."

      @@dismalthoughts Yes, cause robbers tend to turn on the lights and just kind of mill about and then go and have a extended conversation with the cops as soon as they approach. That is what criminals do. /s
      What the cops should have done is observe for like 10-15 minutes, and if they really wanted to approach, knock, and once Mr Khalif identified he was the owner of the store that's it, is it kinda weird for people to be in a store at 1am just kinda milling about? sure, but it ain't illegal, and if its their property then there ain't nothing the cops can do about it

    • @dismalthoughts

      @@DaHuntsman1 Yes. Believe it or not, it is far from uncommon for criminals to pretend to be employees of the place they are robbing, even turning on the lights at night, "milling about", and talking to the cops. There are entire communities dedicated to the idea of "act like you belong" and the things you can get away with using that mentality. And believe it or not, criminals employ a wide variety of tactics, including that one.
      And yeah, I think you're totally right, the officers would have been better off just observing for 10-15 minutes. Heck, even if they didn't, and they still approached Khalif, once he refused to ID, they STILL should have done exactly that -- walked away and just watched. Not as good a solution as just observing from the get-go, which probably would've made it obvious they weren't thieves since they were presumably putting merchandise on the shelves or at the very least not packing any of it to go lol, but I'm just saying -- simple observation is such a good solution it still would've worked even after the cops screwed up the approach lol. If they saw any of the folks inside remove any merchandise from the shelves and take it out of sight, they would have actually had a good reason, ethically and legally, to detain / identify Khalif. And if that never happened, then they would know the store obviously wasn't being robbed without bothering anyone :P

      Taking the word of the person across the street, who didn’t ID himself???? Sounds like you’re missing the point Sir. They had alternatives and they chose to treat the business owner as if he were guilty, much like you did in your reply.

    Officers resigning doesn’t not fix the issue or correct the behavior. When a officer resign it’s in the union contract that they get paid by the department for any unused sick, vacation days, retirement fund etc etc. when they resign from that department they always get employed by other departments in need of officers therefore the root of the problem is not fixed or change going forward.

    • @Ratlins9
      @Ratlins9 3 года назад +12

      False, some police departments will hire cops who were previously employed by another department while others will not. To state” they always get employed by other departments “ is hyperbole.
