Another brilliant video! Thank you Doug! As a NE collector out of 3 styles, my preference is 59Fifty simply because thats what the players wear. My favourite fit however is the the NE wool caps from 1980s and I believe very early 1990s
Thanks for the comment! Just curious, if you liked that 80s-90s time frame for caps, did you like the Retro Classic collection that NE released in 2017?
Hi Doug, I do not own any caps from NE retro classic collection releases so cant comment. I personally want to collect the original NE caps released 20,30, 40 etc years ago as I feel sense of history when purchasing the original caps.
Makes sense... I know NE took a number of steps to make the Retro Classic collection feel authentic to the time (100% Wool, made in USA, etc.) I picked up a Pirates cap (the one I reviewed), and have liked that one a lot. Good luck with the search for originals.

Do they stretch as you where them over a long time period? My head size has it where one size is either too snug for my liking and the next size it too loose. So i dont know how to do about picking the looser one or the tighter one
If you're talking about the two fitted styles, I'd say they only tend to shrink as you wear and sweat in them. That's why I keep a hat jack on hand to refresh the fit if they start feeling smaller. Also, my channel page has tons of videos on either stretching or shrinking when you want to edit a cap - they vary a lot so you have to be prepared to do either one, especially if you buy caps online, thanks.
That's unfortunate... neweracap.com used to allow you to click on a size that was out-of-stock and auto-generate a notification request when it was back in - but I see that doesn't work the same anymore.
I bought a 5950 Dbacks hat back in 1999 and it fits just like the modern 5950 low profile. Every 5950 I've bought since I've had to return them because they're way too tall and boxy. Guess I got lucky!
There's certainly a lot more variation in caps, esp. since they might be made in one of 5-7 international contract manufacturing plants now. It is possible to find a good fit if there are many to choose from in a store, but there are some manufacturing tags that I avoid (e.g. Bangladesh).
Purchased my first low crown 5950 this week, think I have found my new favorite hat! I’m now stocking up on Indians home and away hats while we can get the Chief Wahoo logo. Thanks for a very informative review!
Where I struggle is with a regular 5950 if I were forwards, it looks great, if I flip it around it seems to fit a little bit different. When I wear it backwards it seems to press down on my ears more than it does when I wear it forwards for whatever reason. I’m wondering if the low profile model will help with that? Does anybody know? Or have that same problem?
Great video! What about the brim shapes - roundish on 5950s vs. squared off on 3930s? This is a noticeable difference that I'm surprised you didn't mention. (I didn't wade through all of the comments so I apologize if this has already been brought up) Keep up the good work!
Great catch... and I didn't mention it because when I made this video I was not aware of it! But there is definitely a flatter front edge on the 39Thirty visor. Thanks for pointing that out, and for your support!
Thanks! I think I bought all of these at Lids (lids.com), so you should be able to find them there... but the Phillies cap was a special collection, and this one is probably gone now.
I did a video on comfort in which I talked about sweatbands and the different types I've encountered - ruclips.net/video/1vpa5NZ0G_E/видео.html - but I have to say I have not noticed a consistent difference between authentic collection and any others. The manufacturing site seems to be a bit more influential on the differences.
Would you know is there much of a difference between the 9twenty and the 47 Brand Clean up Cap? I'm from Ireland and prefer the "dad hat" style but don't know if there's a difference
The New Era 9Twenty cap is a very close match, almost identical in fact - 100% cotton, low crown, relaxed and adjustable. I'd say go ahead and try one if that is your style.
I remember when I ordered my first 59Fifty, I thought it didn’t look very good, but other people said it looked fine. The more I wore it the more the brim curved and the more the rest of the hat shaped around my head so it didn’t look as boxy. You just have to find one that fits snugly to your head and it will break in.
@@coryriggs948 players can choose the regular 5950 or the low profile one there's no set rule on which. But the regular 5950 doesn't come curved only the low profile is pre curved
No, I've found the Low Profile are still mostly true to size - even though both styles are hand made and can vary quite a bit from cap to cap. Of course you lose the extra room in the crown, so I think that a potential reaction could be to go about 1/8 size larger... but I've stuck with my standard 7-1/2. Thanks for the question!
Fanatics and the online stores run by them (Lids, FansEdge, MLB Shop, etc.) are the best source for Low Profile. New Era does not make nearly as many Low Pro versions of caps as standard, thanks.
Likely yes, although I was not aware of an XS/S size in the 39Thirty - but I see your measurement falls in that range on size chart at neweracap.com. Given variation of New Era caps, you probably have a chance that it's a little snug, but that'll be your personal preference if it's ok.
Thanks - and if you are going for the 59Fifty, you'll want to get your specific size, which sounds like about 7-1/4. If you're getting a 39Thirty, I'd go for the medium-large.
Do low profiles really run bigger or is that cap? No pun intended. I ordered the same size as I wear in the regular 59/50 so I hope it fits. Any input?
They do not run bigger, the sizing ring inside the sweatband is set to the same circumference as standard. What you lose is the volume in the crown, so I tend to go 1/8 of a size up, to get a little extra room for my forehead, thanks.
Need a low profile snapback! The 7 1/4 is usually good but some are snug. 7 3/8 can sometimes be good but some are loose. So that makes it hard to order online, have to go try them on in store
Agree - a low profile adjustable of some sort would be welcome... the crown on other adjustables like the 9Forty is still lower than I like most of the time. And the variation on sizing you mention has been a consistent problem for New Era over decades. Thanks for the comments.
If you go all the way to XL-XXL size in Flexfit (which is hard to find in stores), then I would definitely move to the standard 59Fifty in your proper fitted size, often they will be offered up to size 8, although in smaller quantities. You might find the L/XL size of the 39Thirty is a little tight, but that's just my speculation.
It was about three years ago, I think maybe it was called "C-Dub" collection of low profile caps... just happened to find Phillies current logo on a maroon cap, which was a great combo. This particular one is probably all gone now, although I also found a 'tonal' Phillies standard 59Fifty, which was all maroon.
My biggest complaint with New Era are the extreme tolerances between the caps. I have tried on certain 950s that are too big everywhere, crown is huge etc... and 950s that are somewhere between a 950 and a low profile. I have a low profile 950 that is so low profile that I feel like I'm wearing a yarmulke..and then literally everything between! I don't understand how the manufacturing tolerances
Yes, variation between caps is a big problem - it can make it very tough to buy them online, versus going to a store and trying them on. What's worse is that NE sources the caps among an array of contract manufacturers, so there is variation even before the caps are fabricated, and there are still some key steps in fabrication that are done by hand.
Good video! I have a various of hats, maily 5950 (high crown) and a few low profile which i dont mind. How ever with the low profile and the 3930 i dont buy as much because when i curve the bill it rubs with my glasses. So the reg 5950 is my choice. I actually wondered if you had any tips on restoring a 5950. Had the 2016 4th of july hat that got smushed in the back seat of my truck
Thanks for the comment! I agree, depth of the curve can mess around with glasses. For restoration, I think the most important thing is to get the cap on some sort of 'block' or form that is close to the original shape. If you've got a hat jack, try stuffing a towel or something into the crown, then place the hat jack and set it. Then you can steam it and let it dry on the fixture. I should have a 'deep clean' video up in the next couple of weeks where I show this.
I stick with my usual 7-1/2, but in my view the only reason to consider going up a size would be the shorter crown - a little less room for your forehead. All New Era models vary, so sometimes your normal size feels different with a different cap.
How does that 39thirty fit you? Is it comfortable? I ask, because I usually wear a 7 3/8 or 7 1/2 with 59fifties, and recently ordered a 39thirty that I like. According to the size chart on New Era's website, the M/L size was what I needed, but I figured I would ask you since we wear the same size fitted. Just trying to get an idea of what I can expect compared to wearing a regular fitted hat. Thanks!
I always wear L/XL in the 39Thirty... I found that the extra thickness in the sweatband from the 'terry-cloth' panels made it feel a little more snug. You'll have a little extra room in the back panels, but that's never bothered me much. Thanks for watching
i’m still on the fence about buying a low profile one. i like the way the regular one fits but i like the idea of a low profile one. do you think i should just go for it and hope it’s not a waste of $40?
All depends on the proportion and how you think the LP will look. If I didn't have the beard, I'd probably buy a few more low profiles, because the crown is more proportional when I am clean shaven. But if you've got a long face, beard or not, the LP can look a little cartoonish.
Ayo question got my fear of god hat and for some reason it doesn't look good on me when i wear it ?may i ask if its because of my head shape or the size of it? Help me out bros I'm kinda new with fitted hats
From the way you describe it, you might be having trouble with the height of the crown and/or its shape. I do prefer softer corners on my standard 59Fifty caps, so I shape them like shown here: ruclips.net/video/e9pSynl4O7M/видео.html - thanks.
they made 59fifty A frame snap back . do they still make these? i cant find em anywhere. and i feel the sizes are smaller . i have to buy a fitted or 9forty snapback for it to fitt my head im 7 3/4 fitted size
You know, I really have never seen an A-frame snapback by New Era, definitely not in the last 3-4 years when I have been more serious about collecting.
Doug, do you notice a size difference between the regular and low pro? I wear a 7 3/8 in a regular 59fifty that's been curved and stretched naturally, but web searches all say the low pros are bigger and to go down a size. I wonder if they're trying to compare a non-curved regular to a low pro
I have not found that to be true... if anything I found that caps with the lower crown (like the retro crown edition) can run a little bit smaller. But there's tons of variation in any model, so sometimes it's specific to one cap or another within the same family.
My biggest issue with the 5950 is how hard it can be to find the correct fit, I alway order 7 1/2 but sometimes they are way too snug. The nice thing about the 3930 is that you can order them online and not worry about it not fitting.
True, the stretch fit is forgiving if you like that cap style. I would also recommend that you check out my tutorial on stretching 59Fifty caps ( ruclips.net/video/8N-EL-rmgIc/видео.html ). If you find a cap is too snug, this is a great way to add up to 1/8 in extra size. Thanks for watching.
David Cleveland I agree. I live in a rural area and ordering 5950's online are an absolute nightmare, which is the only way I can get access for purchasing, unless I wanna drive an hour away to try on hats. After dozens of failed attempts, I just gave up on the 5950's and switched to the 3930's and haven't looked back. They're fantastic hats! Seems like quality control for the 39's are better too. I haven't ordered any 39's with loose logo threads or messed up stitching like I have for the 59's. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the 3930 clientele are former and disgruntled 5950 wearers. I'm no exception, lol
I know that the most likes the low crown style caps and I have some of those caps in my collection and looks very well but I prefer the 59fifthy because I have long curly hair and I feel more confortable with the 59fifthy caps style.
Totally agree... definitely more room for hair under the higher crown, the standard 59Fifty is my everyday cap, and that is one of the reasons. Thanks for watching
The ones with the lower silhouette - so the low profile fitted or the 39Thirty stretch fitted. I think the 39Thirty looks the best on smaller heads, thanks.
I usually recommend going up one size when you get a Low Profile… since the crown is lower it feels smaller, and I like getting a little extra room back, thanks
Trust me if you have a small head go for the low profile. Because the regular joints are too big if your head is like a 7. I usually stick to Mitchell n ness dad hats because they fit my small head better than any new era product…..
I have not needed to with the few LP caps I have, but sometimes I do go up 1/8 of a size to get a little extra room. I don’t think it would hurt, but I’d definitely recommend trying a few on to check (if a local store has a few). Thanks
Good video. The low profile has a rounded look from the front and imo may look better on those with a smaller sized noggin. I wear a 7 1/2 and the original looks better on me. From what I can tell, a pretty good majority of players wear the original 5950.
The closest match would be the New Era 9Twenty cap - 100% cotton, low crown, relaxed and adjustable - but that cap style is not in this video. For a similar profile and general shape, with a structured crown, I'd probably say the 39Thirty, which is the stretch-fit cap reviewed here. Thanks for watching.
I usually buy the same size in both styles, but you could go up by 1/8 of a size in the low pro and probably not have any trouble. If you want to see the difference in crown height, skip ahead past the 7-minute mark on the video and I try each of the styles on. Thanks
The sizing ring and the sweatband perimeter measurement are the same of course, so technically yes - but I find that I like the extra volume in the standard crown. The lower angle on the front panels hugs my forehead more, so I often go up 1/8 of a size in a low profile.
you look good in all three types, I just bought 39thirty and it either looks like I'm wearing a cone if I put it on loosely, or it goes down to about half of my ear when I put it on tightly, both look ridiculous
Sounds tough to find the right silhouette for your head... did you happen to try on at a store before buying? That's where you can check the different sizes and caps - New Era is well known for the variation they have from cap to cap, even in same model/size. Anyway, good luck in your search, and maybe give 47 brand a look too - I've picked up a couple of their adjustable "MVP" style lately, thanks.
Actually I have not tried a 47 yet, but I see quite a few of them at stores, mostly of the "low crown" style. Maybe a future comparison, thanks for the comment!
Yes, check out my very first video on stretching ( ruclips.net/video/8N-EL-rmgIc/видео.html ) - and if you invest in a hat jack and use it as shown, you should be able to stretch it by 1/8 of a size like you mention. Thanks.
*Glad you posted this assumed NewEras were all the same, I bought one onlinne & never looked right! It was big & funny lookin on a small head. Ill never by a 59/50 ever again.*
Cool - glad I could help. There are ways to shape the 5950 standard to soften or lower the look of the crown - you can go to my channel for a few videos - but you may never get them to the look you prefer. Thanks!
39thirty and low profile, how they compare too the 9forty crown hight? Also the new 9fifty stretch snap, anyone compare the size? I love the look of the 9fifty and 59fifty hats but my face is pretty small I guess since they don't suit me at all.
Personally I've never owned a 9Forty, but I'd say the crown height and silhouette are very comparable to the LP or 39Thirty, based on times I've seen them at stores.
You should turn your head side to side when you model the caps as people are here really to see what the difference looks like on your head and they can't really tell by just a front view, thanks.
Not really - the specification of the crown height is likely identical... but you will see variation in both models from cap to cap. So if you happen to compare one of each and notice a difference, it's probably due to manufacturing differences. That said, I don't own enough 9Fifty caps to get a good data set for true comparison.
This is exactly the info I wanted before heading into Lids to look for a hat. Thanks!

@dreinthe616 yep, totally. Just checked and mine is USA made
Purchased my first low crown 5950 this week, think I have found my new favorite hat! I’m now stocking up on Indians home and away hats while we can get the Chief Wahoo logo. Thanks for a very informative review!
You are welcome, glad it helped out!
Stocking up on the racist logo my guy
Where I struggle is with a regular 5950 if I were forwards, it looks great, if I flip it around it seems to fit a little bit different. When I wear it backwards it seems to press down on my ears more than it does when I wear it forwards for whatever reason. I’m wondering if the low profile model will help with that? Does anybody know? Or have that same problem?
For me, the regular fitted are my go to.. and as i go down the line to low profile and “dad hat” those are more of a “run errands” hat for me
Great video!
Your video is the best do you have the link of the cap that you buy please
Thanks! I think I bought all of these at Lids (lids.com), so you should be able to find them there... but the Phillies cap was a special collection, and this one is probably gone now.
In your opinion, do you think the MLB on field authentic 59fifty have a thicker (more cushioned) inner sweatband compared to any other 59fifty?
I did a video on comfort in which I talked about sweatbands and the different types I've encountered - ruclips.net/video/1vpa5NZ0G_E/видео.html - but I have to say I have not noticed a consistent difference between authentic collection and any others. The manufacturing site seems to be a bit more influential on the differences.
I have a 39thirty stretch chiefs hat. And it is a medium large. It fits perfecfly!
Thank you very much 👌
At thrnClevelans game, I saw a 39thirty hat with the MLB logo in the back; regret not buying it. Now can’t find any online.
Are the on field 5950 a slight curved bill like the low profile is?
@@coryriggs948 players can choose the regular 5950 or the low profile one there's no set rule on which. But the regular 5950 doesn't come curved only the low profile is pre curved
@@coryriggs948 you can curve the 59fifty’s flat brim, there’s videos on the best way to curve your flat bill
Thanks, great video. Found the answers to all my questions. Pax
Did you end up buying a smaller size for the Low Profile cap compared to the 59fifty cap? I've read online that the sizing doesn't match up the same.
Where can you buy low profile hats? I don't see much variety of them like the regular 5950
Fanatics and the online stores run by them (Lids, FansEdge, MLB Shop, etc.) are the best source for Low Profile. New Era does not make nearly as many Low Pro versions of caps as standard, thanks.
My head measures 54/55 cm. I bought a 39THIRTY XS-S. Do you think it's okay?
Likely yes, although I was not aware of an XS/S size in the 39Thirty - but I see your measurement falls in that range on size chart at neweracap.com. Given variation of New Era caps, you probably have a chance that it's a little snug, but that'll be your personal preference if it's ok.
Big thanks...very informative and helped me a lot in choosing what design/model fits me best .
Cool, glad it helped you out, thanks!
awesome video sir, going to buy 59fifty but my head size is 57.5 cms (medium), so should I go with smaller-medium or medium-large size?
@@dreinthe616 thank you!
Are the visor longer on a 39thirty compared to 59fifty models, seems a bit longer?
Need a low profile snapback! The 7 1/4 is usually good but some are snug. 7 3/8 can sometimes be good but some are loose. So that makes it hard to order online, have to go try them on in store
Agree - a low profile adjustable of some sort would be welcome... the crown on other adjustables like the 9Forty is still lower than I like most of the time. And the variation on sizing you mention has been a consistent problem for New Era over decades. Thanks for the comments.
Which style is suitable for big heads? I wear L - Xxl in flexfit hat
If you go all the way to XL-XXL size in Flexfit (which is hard to find in stores), then I would definitely move to the standard 59Fifty in your proper fitted size, often they will be offered up to size 8, although in smaller quantities. You might find the L/XL size of the 39Thirty is a little tight, but that's just my speculation.
where did you find the phillies cap?
Does Lids carry LowProfile in stores or only online? Thanks in advance
Yes, they do usually have some, but mostly it will be your local market teams plus NYY, BOS and other big sellers.
Hi man, did you size up for your low profile?
Actually no, I stuck with my normal 7-1/2, thanks.
Does the low profile fit the same as a regular 59fifty ? I’m a 7 1/8 in a regular 59fifty, should I get the same size for the low profile?
I stick with my usual 7-1/2, but in my view the only reason to consider going up a size would be the shorter crown - a little less room for your forehead. All New Era models vary, so sometimes your normal size feels different with a different cap.
I’m in shock. I had no idea there were that many parts to a hat 🧢
Its pretty cool tho 🧢🧣🧤🩲🧦🧥👖
Great video. IMHO I think the 3930 looked the best on you’re head.
Cool, man - thanks... I used to wear a lot of 3930s but as my beard got longer I went much more toward the standard.
Great vid, I've subbed and just ordered my first low pro. Peace from Australia.
Cool, thank you and hope you enjoy the cap.
Where did you buy it from? having troubling finding the low pro anywhere in Australia
What size are you for the 39thirty band hat?
I wear L/XL, thanks
Great vid bro, the 59Fifty looks the best on you by far!
Thanks man, appreciate it!
Should you go down a size in the Low Profile compared to the original 5950?
Usually it's better to go up one size, to get a little extra room to make up for the smaller crown on the Low Pro, thanks.
@@dreinthe616 what’s the best adjustable cap for head size 61.5Cms?
I know that the most likes the low crown style caps and I have some of those caps in my collection and looks very well but I prefer the 59fifthy because I have long curly hair and I feel more confortable with the 59fifthy caps style.
Totally agree... definitely more room for hair under the higher crown, the standard 59Fifty is my everyday cap, and that is one of the reasons. Thanks for watching
Which one is the best for small heads?
The ones with the lower silhouette - so the low profile fitted or the 39Thirty stretch fitted. I think the 39Thirty looks the best on smaller heads, thanks.
Standard 5950 as appose to the low prodile is it true to size or u have to size up or down
I usually recommend going up one size when you get a Low Profile… since the crown is lower it feels smaller, and I like getting a little extra room back, thanks
Trust me if you have a small head go for the low profile. Because the regular joints are too big if your head is like a 7. I usually stick to Mitchell n ness dad hats because they fit my small head better than any new era product…..
do you have to get a size bigger for the low profile fit?
I have not needed to with the few LP caps I have, but sometimes I do go up 1/8 of a size to get a little extra room. I don’t think it would hurt, but I’d definitely recommend trying a few on to check (if a local store has a few). Thanks
@@dreinthe616 ok thank you
Do you keep stickers on the hat?
Why or why not
Do you go same size on the low profile?
No I usually go up 1/8 of a size for a little extra headroom since the crown is shorter, thanks.
Good video. The low profile has a rounded look from the front and imo may look better on those with a smaller sized noggin. I wear a 7 1/2 and the original looks better on me. From what I can tell, a pretty good majority of players wear the original 5950.
Yes, I agree, seems that the standard is the majority in MLB. I think the higher crown balances out a larger head, chin, or beard for sure. Thanks!
What looks best with a polo
Which new era cap would be comparable to 47 brand clean up ? Also which one would be similar to it but with a more structured crown
I love the phillies' color
Yes me too. I didn't know they made a maroon with the current P, not the 70's P.
Great review I hope to see more from your channel thanks mate
What is the size gap between the 59fifty and the lowprofile ?
I usually buy the same size in both styles, but you could go up by 1/8 of a size in the low pro and probably not have any trouble. If you want to see the difference in crown height, skip ahead past the 7-minute mark on the video and I try each of the styles on. Thanks
Does Lids carry low profile ? I know locker room doesn’t it only has regular fitted
Depends on the store, but the three stores near me all carry a few low profile caps. Mostly the local team plus the big sellers (NYY, LAD, STL) Thanks
dre in the 616 cool bro I’ll check them out
İ wish you have showed us the back profile of these caps when you tried them
Good suggestion - when it comes time for a re-upload/remaster on this one, a more complete back view is a good thing to add, thanks.
Do you have to shape the 39 thirty or does it get shaped by itself?
It's shaped out of the box
Does a 7 1/2 low profile fit the same as a 7 1/2 high crown?

I have a 7 1/4 is there any way to stretch it to 7-3/8
Yes, check out my very first video on stretching ( ruclips.net/video/8N-EL-rmgIc/видео.html ) - and if you invest in a hat jack and use it as shown, you should be able to stretch it by 1/8 of a size like you mention. Thanks.
Thanks. Very good video explaining the differences.
Thanks!
What sized 59Fifty New Era hats do you wear?
I wear 7-1/2 normally, but own some 7-3/8 and 7-5/8 that work for me or I have modified for a good fit.
How hard are the 59fiftys to bend? It seems their all made to be strictly flat brim, and require special treatment to bend.
Not hard to bend at all, there is one way I do it in this recent video - ruclips.net/video/6FOY-MES6xg/видео.html

Awesome video!
You should turn your head side to side when you model the caps as people are here really to see what the difference looks like on your head and they can't really tell by just a front view, thanks.
It's a good suggestion, and I have done a bit more of that recently, but at this time was just doing still photos, thanks.
Can anyone help my head measures 24 inch but the sizes are different in the website
You need a 7 3/4 for a good fit, in a fitted if you have a 24in measurement.
You should also check out my video ruclips.net/video/i0MkkHPJ8vU/видео.html - this has some good info on getting the correct size, thanks.
39thirty is my FAVE
Is 59fifty deeper than 9fifty?
Not really - the specification of the crown height is likely identical... but you will see variation in both models from cap to cap. So if you happen to compare one of each and notice a difference, it's probably due to manufacturing differences. That said, I don't own enough 9Fifty caps to get a good data set for true comparison.
