Solved: new HDD/SDD not available in Windows, Device Manager & Disk Management, but listed in BIOS

- Your new SSD or HDD is recognized and shown in bios, but it doesn't show up in Windows, neither in the explorer nor in the device manager and it's not found in the disk management also? I had this problem too, but eventually I was able to solve it - but it took a strange approach to do so.
I hope this video helps you to make windows detect your new hard drive! I used this on a Windows 10 system, please let me know in the comments if it works for other Windows versions too. Наука
Worked, Google did nothing to help. SSD 870 evo On win11 didnt show up But this worked!
i have the same ssd 870 evo and i did the memory check but didnt work
@@sergio8325 I did it with the EVO 870 4tb ssd and it somehow worked for me. I still dont get why running a memmory test would have sorted this? but it did.
This worked. The only thing missing in this video is a notepad and some techno music.
HHH Yup...
The most annoying part of tech solution videos.
HAHAHAHAAHHAAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA. Best comment i ever seen on any tutorial video in my life LOL
Worked for me too. Give me a break MS; this is amatuer glitching on the GREAT AND POWERFUL WINDOWS 10!
Lmaoooo
Brilliant! After 2 days of troubleshooting with multiple HDs, cables, ports, BIOS settings I came on to this tutorial. 15 minutes later my problem is fixed. Thank you.
Five years later and you're still a hero. Worked like a charm. Thank you
Wow! This totally worked for me, thank you so much!
Worked like a charm!! Thank you so very much!!! I've spent the better part of 12 hours swapping cables, trying new power, etc. all to be frustrated and disappointed. Thanks to your straight forward solution, I have all 3 disks showing up and all 3.5 TB is available. No data lost. Liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work. I'm impressed that 3+ years later this still works perfectly. Thanks again!!!
Thank you so much! 3 years later and this has just made my day. Thank you.
SAME! I just went through this.
Enormous tip!
All those commercial applications, are not able to detect whatever. Your Microsoft solution does, your clear speech brings the light to our lost souls in the middle of nowhere.
THANKS!!
Thank you very much for this information! I have filtered through tons of videos and articles, but this one was the one I needed to finally get Windows to see my new SSD.
Awesome. Don't know why I didn't realize this... it's been 20 years since I was a computer technician. You get a subscribe. Thanks!
Wow, this worked and I've been sitting here wondering why my second hard drive wasn't being detected when all I did was unplug it for a few hours. Thank you so much! Very useful suggestion and I never would have figured this out on my own.
wait... I should try unplug it for a few hours and plug back in? Last hack didnt work for me
You're a lifesaver! Thank you so much. I bought a new 2TB hdd to put in my optical drive via a caddy and it wouldn't show up. Thought I had done something wrong. Your video was the only one I found that worked for me. Hooray!
This did the trick. Ran it, which seemed to accomplish nothing, and upon returning to disk management was immediately prompted to initialize. Everything else that kept showing up in my google searches were just the standard "initialize and assign" that didn't address the problem of there is nothing to select.
I thank you.
I came back to give this vid props. This solved my issue. Thank you!
You are my hero! I spent hours trying to figure this out with no luck. Your solution worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much for sharing this, without it I would have be screwed big time.
3 years later and it still works! Thank You sooooo much :)
Hello... just wanted to say THANK YOU! Also, let you know that well over a year after posting the video it is still helping people.
I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and my internal hard drives would not show (but did show in BIOS). I tried many suggestions but nothing worked until I found your video and tried the Memory Diagnostic Tool.
Much thanks! :)
I can't believe that this worked. I've spent 5 hours trying to figure it out. THANK YOU!
This didn't make sense, but I was desperate. For some absurd reason, IT WORKED.
You, sir, are a wizard.
I cannot thank you enough, I was going to return the drive thinking it was a faulty SSD. THANK YOU!
Oh bless you uploader, if it weren't for your little tip I would have assumed that my drive must have been damaged during shipment. Thank you! It works!!!!
Trust me I was trying to solve this problem for past 6 hrs, searching the corners of internet. And finally this is where my search ended up. I'm literally super happy now, I can't express it. Thanks a lot, and thanks to the guy who came up with this bizzare yet super cool idea. Now I can have a nice sleep.
Seriously man... You are a LIFE SAVER! This was driving me crazy. I could see the drives on the BIOS start-up and I felt like a fool swapping cables over and over, but I didn't know what else to do. I would have NEVER figured this out without you. Thank you!
I was doing the same thing swapping cables thinking wtf is this shit. I’m doing the mem test and I’m going to see what happens!

Really appreciate your help! This method did the trick! I just bought a Samsung 860 Evo SSD 500GB, and I could see it in the BIOS, but not the disk management. After completing a memory diagnostics test, the disk showed up after the PC restarted. Thanks again for your help!
I can't see mine Wd 500 gb even in the bios pls help

Thanks! I can confirm this still works today :). I was replaceing one of my smaller SSD's with a new larger one, and first removed the wrong SSD. After swapping the correct old SSD with the new, the new SSD showed up like it should, but the first old SSD that I had put back in seemed to have disappeared, and wasnt shown in diskmanagement - this trick helped
This is also confirmed as one of the solutions you can use in windows 7. I was worried as a lot of this pertains to 10, but it worked like a charm for me in 7.
Hey man just used your tip today in 2021! Dude I had returned my SSD thinking it was broken! I looked online and nothing helped. I got a new SSD and I installed windows but now my old HDD wasn’t being recognized. This saved me big time man! I appreciate you!
7 years later and this still helps people, thank god u posted this video
Thanks so much for that - brilliant!
I spent most of the evening trying everything to install a 860-EVO 1TB on my Win10 Home PC.
After extensive tests from searches including 3rd party disk tools (useless), swapping cables (no effect), playing in my UEFI BIOS (no change), formatting to NTFS in an external mount then remounting (no effect - but it proved the SSD was working) etc.
Your solution worked perfectly. Why it works is a mystery - safe mode effect? Whatever, it works and I'm grateful.
I am in the same boat. lol. I am trying this now. Hold on to your butts. (movie ref lol)

Worked for me! Thanks!
Maybe helpful to add:
I used the basic test with a single pass. That only takes a couple of seconds.
I don't comment often on RUclips, but I would like to say thank you.
This solution has helped me solve my problem for detecting my new SSD in Windows 10. I needed it to be detected so I could clone my old HDD boot drive into it. You have saved my day.
The diagnostic took some time to complete, but it was worth the wait. Still can't figure out how RAM is related to Disk Storage, but well, it worked in the end.
Just came back to say this has worked for me - no idea how you managed to figure this out, I was pulling my hair out! Thank you very much :)
This just worked... Win10 wasn't seeing my new Samsung 860 EVO SSD, and after running the memory check and rebooting, there it was in Disk Management.
Unbelievable! Thank you for solving my problem!
Jason Giovannettone I hope this works for me I have the same issue right now also have the same ssd
Thank you so much! I was about to throw away my HDD after every answer I found online told me it was defective... I have no idea how the hell this works
Thank you!! Worked for me. My situation was swapping out a crashed hard drive for a similar new one. At first the new one wouldn't show up and this trick worked brilliantly.
Wow, thanks! I would never have expected a fooking memory test to sort this problem out. Thanks for making the video!
your an angel sent by god to save me ... almost cried when WD external HDD not recongnised and again almost cried of happiness after applying your trick and it showed "healthy, active" in disk manager ... thankx
YOU'RE A GENIUS
smarter than microsoft apparently
OMG FINALLY THANK YOU!!! I’ve been searching for HOURS trying to find a fix as i had many things i didn’t want to lose by returning the hard drive
Thank you, this worked for me. I got a laptop for school and just didn't use my desktop for a few months. Powered it on today and my hard drive didn't show up so I had no access to most of the things on my computer. Did what you said, it powered up again and now I'm back in action. Thanks again
Hello, if this solution didn't work and you've tried most other things, try swapping around the Sata cables or just check they're positioned correctly. One of my SSDs disappeared from Windows but was recognised in the Bios. I tried everything and just thought it check the sata cables. Moved them around, booted up Windows and voila, it was there!
Just thought I'd come back and comment just in case someone was in the same position as me
thx for sharing
i am and its still not working, it shows in the bios also tho, any ideas?
@@3dirty5xi I had the same problem and replugging the cables in other sata worked for me

I have been scratching my head for weeks trying to find the problem and it works now thanks for this video.
It’s so stupid that something this obscure actually works. I keep going back to this video when this issue pops up. Thanks a lot for making this!
Thank you so much! Easy fix, and straight to the point!
Thank you very much, this method 100% worked for me and I really appreciate it.
Man, thank you very much!!! I was working on it about 3 days without success. I was trying to put a Caddy (second HDD on optical drive). Once again, thank you! Merci beaucoup!
I rarely comment on youtube channel. But you really are a big help. I spend hours trying to figure out what the problem with my hdd. I nearly go out to buy a new cable thinking maybe my cable is the problem.... really... THANK YOU
Thank You...Thank You... Thank You I have been struggling for hours. downloading trial software, searching the web... even the Samsung software that came with the drive was useless. Much appreciated

you still got a heart man
Thanks a lot, man! And there I was, thinking that my old HDD is already dead. But after applying what I learned in this tutorial, MAN IT WORKED! Now I got 2 drives in my PC, and almost 1 TB total memory! And this very same thing works for Windows 8.1 too, since this my current operating system.
I would never had tried to solve this problem by running the memory test but I did and it solved the problem immediately. Thank you.
Legend! - this worked for me. I was very confused that I was doing something wrong. Now I just hate windows a bit more...
After going crazy, somehow all my drives appeared again, but I have no idea why. I had not tried your idea yet, but I found your video a little later and wished I found it earlier. I still don't know why mine reappeared, but I had tried different sata ports, cables, etc etc. I thought that I had somehow fried my ports, but no. I was even on the verge of buying a new motherboard. Computers, what a pain in the butt sometimes. I like your voice.
You are graced by some dude in Belgium. May you live long and prosperous.
You're a legend man I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for hours and finally this actually solved it, I've got no idea what caused it but this solved it
Thank you very much! You just save me time and money!! Thanks from Brazil
Lmao wtf, this worked. I was not expecting it to work at all and was getting ready to take the computer into the shop. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. I'd spent hours swapping cables and ports. Running the memory check had the new disk showing in Explorer straight after the reboot.
Man this video helped me so much. In my case I had faulty cable which I wasn't aware of and the same and the issue from your video.
Thanks man!! Your a god... worked this in December 2019! Thanks a Lot
I have migrated win10 from "c" drive to SSD,but when i put hard drive in caddy and put SSD in the place of hard drive ... Windows works fast but Hard drive is not visible in my computer ..SSD is visible
I'd like to add my thanks, Valheru! After running the memory diagnostic as you described, 3 internal sata drives, that did not and would not show up in device manager or disk management, appeared after the reboot. The memory diagnostic revealed no memory problems, but at the cost of 20 minutes or so the problem was solved.
Worked for me with windows 7. Once I was able to see it I did a Low level format then was able to go into disk management and everything worked normal from there. Thank you, I couldn't have done it without your help.
That didnt work for me. But after some research I found that most of the times it happens because how the SATA ports are set in BIOS.
I restarted the pc, pressed F10 for boot menu, went to Advanced and found how the SATA ports were configured. They were set as RAID in my case, I changed them to IDE. Restarted the pc and my new SSHD was there.
Geez, I was scratching my head for hours. Wasn't showing up in my BIOS and this guy video didn't work. This did!
Thanks 😃
Thank you! I have been looking for this answer for hours.
Im not sure what u do when u say I went to advance
I tried that and it fucked my compute and itr keeps forcing me to repair the computer which never goes through.
Mars Frontier sadly it did not work for me every time I did that and restart it wouldn’t let me load windows.
This is awesome, it works fine for me after hours of unnecessary unplugging and plugging . Thank you mate. And by the way, nice German accent. I have the French version of it.

although I've been using an SSD and a hhd in the same computer for a while, one day the hhd stopped appearing. I followed your instructions and is working again. Thanks a lot.

This is didn't work sadly my drive is still missing :(
Someone recommended your video and it worked for me really well, thank you!!
Awesome! Got away from all the 'yes I've tried all the obvious things -duh!' and found this. Thanks!
I have the same problem, when I reinstall my win10 on SSD, and my hard drive is gone, not show up in Windows, Device Manager & Disk Management, but show up in BIOS.
I tried run the memory diagnose, but it still does not works.
Of course other problems can prevent your HDD from showing up in windows. Simple causes could be a missing activation in disk management or a not properly connected SATA port. But of course there is a real possibility the HDD is actually broken. Maybe you can check that by attaching the HDD to another PC.
oh, still not showing to me. thank you any way
Did you ever get it fixed?
@@markkumarkku its showing to me as an external hard drive
Wow. This is what made my drives show up. Couldn't believe it, but you were right! Windows 10 64 bit, adding 2 new 4TB drives - BIOS shows them, but not anywhere in windows. After the Memory test you showed here, they showed in Disk Mgmt and was able to format GPT style NTFS and get on with it. THANK YOU!
THANKS!! I checked a bunch of different things and watched a bunch of RUclips videos trying to get my new hard drive to show up with no luck. But this fixed my problem!!

Dude thx alot you save 200 GB of my games 😂
6-1/2 years later and it still works! Installed 2 new drives but Windows couldn't see them. This fixed the issue! Thank you!!
This is working in 2020 as well, to my surprise, much like you, trying out everything else and this was the fix for me, thanks a lot.
I have windows 10. It cant detect my external hard drive in any of my usb ports. but my ports all work because it will detect everything else just not my hard drive external. it does not show in any manager not detected in any of them. my pc has good health. I have updated all new drivers, I have uninstalled/reinstalled drivers in device manager still nothing. my cords are good. power source is good, does not show in disk manger. what else will work?
Maybe your external drive needs an additional power source or just other usb ports, because the higher the usb version the higher the power the port provides to connected devices. Is it an ssd or a hdd? Because hdds need more power to work properly... Just some guesses...
how do I find that info? @@ValheruGaming
@@ValheruGaming I have this if it helps any? products.wdc.com/library/AAG/ENG/4178-705005.pdf
It is a USB 2.0 device and it seems not to have an external addional power plug, so if you don't have an anchient pc it should work at at least at some ports of your computer. If you use a USB 3.0 cable that could cause a problem, so use another usb cable (2.0) and if this doesn't help and repeating the RAM test in this configuration doesn't change anything, I'm unfortuantely not able to help you.
Thank you. @@ValheruGaming
