Compare Good and Bad Pass Through on the Quest 3. (Battery Saver Glitch)

- I managed to get my hands on a friend's Quest 3 that has Terrible pass thru video. By using a Go Pro to record the left eyepiece display on both Q3s, I've managed to put together a comparison between good and bad passthrough video.
Meta's commercials for the Quest 3 give user's the impression that pass-through video displayed inside the headset is crystal clear. This isn't true. The headset display tends to be a little bit grainy, but of good enough quality to let you see, move around and perform tasks while wearing the Q3.
If you think your passthrough looks a lot worse than this, you may've enabled the Quest 3 Battery Saver mode and you're now stuck in low resolution display mode. There's no fix for this yet, but Meta should be rolling out a new update in the near future. Until that happens,

I recorded this video using two separate Quest 3s. One stuck in low res and the other with normal pass through. I used a go pro to record the left eyepiece display in the headset on both Q3s while panning around my well lit dinning room.

thanks for the video, I just needed a direct comparison between a "good" Pass Through and a "bad" Pass Through. I definitely have the bad Pass Through. Hope there is a fix coming up soon

Yeah, it can be annoying, but hopefully Meta will roll out a fix soon.

The link is for a discussion of the battery saver mode. I never turned that switch on when I got mine and the pass through is horrible. No amount of factory resets or reboots helped. If you record or take a picture all is wonderful resolution. The pass through quality issue seems to be wider than just the power saving mode.
You're correct. Users have reported being in the low resolution video mode without ever turning BS on. There's a blurb in the description about that and there's been a few comments about folks being there without turning it on. Still waiting on Meta for a fix.
Bought mine 2 days ago and saw this blurry passthrough and thought my system was broke. In a lit room I can't read my phone or keyboard. Had to keep taking off headset during setup. Thanks for info
Yep, I've gotten a batch of folks reporting similar issues. Hopefully, Meta will get this sorted soon.
Thank you for this!!! Can you do the same test but with OVR metrics? Do you see any differences on the numbers? (E.g. resolution, fps, etc). Would be great to know that to effectively know if it is stuck or not.
Sorry, my buddy swapped out his "bad" Q3 for a good one. His pass through looks like mine now. Wish I thought of that at the time, that might've given us some more information.

This whole time I thought it was just crap.
That's what a lot of us thought too.
For my quest 3 it’s very blurry for pass through and I can’t even read my phone it’s just seems like my phones is to bright to read and the camera is out of focus kinda like phone cameras when your recording if you know what I mean
Yep, sounds like you're in the low res mode.
Can this low res be fix?
@@guille2024 There have been a few people that reported they were able to correct it with a factory reset, others. weren't able to fix it. Probably going to be waiting on Meta to correct this one.
Since some people have "good" versions and some people have "bad" versions doesn't this means that it is hardware related? I'm assuming that each device has the same software running. Isn't that a valid reason to request a different device from Meta?
The exact cause still hasn't been identified by Meta. Speculation does include different camera manufacturers providing slighty different hardware.
All Q3 are still under warranty, so if yours is "bad", I'd suggest returning it.
Sorry for bumping, has there been any kind of update with regards to this? Mine still has that super grainy low-resolution passthrough. Here are my system versions.

The software is supposed to be updated. If your passthrough is still bad, I'd put it in for warranty repair.
Could you fix it with ADB Commands or Quest Game Optimizer ?
QGO will make the apps themselves look better, if you're in this mode, but it doesn't affect pass thru at all. Don't know enough about ADB commands to say whether this could be a fix, but I haven't seen anything yet about them being used to correct it.
And I asked me, why everyone hype this passtrough, I have definitely the bad passtrough, I cannot see any letters on my phone

oh no i got the bad quest 3 ... and here on Brazil there is no international warranty. 😢
and i will need still paying hard money of the bad quest for more 9 months ...
Sorry to hear that. Bright lighting helps somewhat. Also there's been a few reports that folks who did multiple factory resets, eventually got it working. This didn't work for my buddy, but might be worth a try since you don't have other options.
I only play it on outdoor, . I have more light than anyone, but the image is worst than yours :( but ok i dont like mix reality. I only like pcvr maybe my quest can be the same quality of pc vr
The pass through is the only thing affected by this defect. PCVR looks great on Q3.
