Quest 3 Passthrough - Is Mixed Reality Grainy?

  • I decided to answer the questions that a lot of people have been asking me about the Quest 3 Passthrough, and why the mixed reality seems to look better for some people more than others. I hope this helps you all out!
    ⚠️The passthrough in the RECORDING can differ than how it is actually PERCEIVED! If I say that it has a level of graininess and you do not see it, that means that it is NATIVE inside the headset and not on the RECORDING.⚠️

Like I said I bought the quest 3 for better VR hardware, I also would have preferred better cameras for the pass through but the headset itself isn’t even capable of 1080p to begin with. But it’s a huge leap from quest 2 and that’s exactly why I bought it and pass through and MR is a nice little bonus for my VR headset

    Great video. What doesn't come across is the amount of grain that there really is when viewed through the headset, most probably because, as you say the captures are much better quality than the live images and also because they are 2d and reduced in size so the pixels in the image are packed together more and reduce the grain effect.
    I was so disappointed at the live image that I contacted Meta support. They have been great so far and they have asked for my details and the serial numbers on the box and headset. Are they checking to see what batch my machine was manufactured in? I was thinking that this could be defects or different components. But I am more and more on the side that this is how it is. Even with all my lights - I have about 20 spotlights in my living room plus lamps - its still no where near your image quality but when you play a a game you don't really notice - I think that's the key, it's enough for games but I am sure 99% of the new quest users will put it on and think it looks *crap* and be disappointed.

    • @322ss
      @322ss 8 месяцев назад +3

      Well it is quite obvious prerelease footage was 100% marketing BS to fool anyone who didn't think too much. Since when have digital cameras / video cameras created perfect image in low light conditions? Or even in pretty OK lighting conditions. There is always some grain, more or less, but always some. And when you are selling a device with a price tag of 500-700 usd, now wonder if the lenses and sensors are not the best ones, even though they might be of high quality.

    • @VRCentral
      @VRCentral  8 месяцев назад +2

      I think thats another factor is the games. You get so caught up in whats in your room you dont notice how the rest is grainy. But aside from that I should have mentioned in the video that I sourced them differently. The first Quest I had was bought as a pre-order from Meta when they came out and the 2nd one was bought from my local Best Buy to ensure that they were hopefully from different batches as best I could.

    • @rayamc607

    Quest pro has one color camera and does some magic to use the black and white cameras to make this stereo color. The Quest 3 has 2 color cameras not sure what shenanigans they do but the extra camera is what I think helps this the most.

      I'd like to see what they're doing computationally with the passthrough. Obviously they aren't just sending a feed from each camera to each eye and are processing it into a 3d image. I expect this might be improved through software in the future.
      I don't know why people are expecting early consumer grade level passthrough in a device that's essentially a $649 dollar cellphone with a 4k display and a ton of other tech to be like what the future apple headset that costs 6x as much.
      And if you don't know by now that marketing videos aren't the same as actual experience I don't know what to say.
      Everything from fast food product photos to literal video game showcases end up not looking like the finished product.

    I see you are using the default strap. I am so glad I didn't get the battery elite since it now seems at least 20W output is needed and probably more for this power pig. I find the head strap that came with it to been comfortable over hours with a power bank stuck to the backstrap as a counterbalance. I can also recline on a bed and set the power bank between pillows which is not comfortable with the elite straps. You also got to try stuff like Sword Art outside in a large area during the day- just be very careful not to get direct sun in the lenses but the cameras are unaffected. A 60,000+ mAh power pack in the pocket or a backpack with a high W output in the pocket keeps you going all day and are cheap..

    • @VRCentral
      @VRCentral  8 месяцев назад +5

      Yea the elastic strap isnt as uncomfortable as it was on the Quest 2, not a night and day difference, but definitely more comfortable. Another guy in the comments was literally just telling me though that nobody will take me seriously though if I use the standard strap and I'm like "what does that have to do with anything of what I've tested" XD
      Also with the batteries on other parts of your body, Its been really comfortable using this lately to keep my Q3 alive. A "Neck Battery" XD : www.amvrshop.com/products/nec-battery-for-quest-2-quest-pro-pico-4?_pos=1&_psq=neck&_ss=e&_v=1.0&ref=VRCentral

      Thats one of the things I went through with the theories on why it looks so good on recording is because they want to sell more headsets with really good marketing and hope that people will just deal with the passthrough

  • @ImmersedRobot
    @ImmersedRobot 8 месяцев назад +2

    In the section of the video where you compare the through-the-lens passthrough, and the recorded passthrough [7:47], there is an obvious difference in that you're drastically zoomed in on the through-the-lens footage. That's the main point in all of this - the recorded passthrough doesn't look any better than the in-headset passthrough at all, it's simply the case that the video footage is stretched over a user's entire field of view while using it, and that's why it looks much lower resolution.

    • @VRCentral
      @VRCentral  8 месяцев назад

      I didnt "zoom in" at all in the recording. I had to increase the size of the frame to make it fit the screen but thats all. While using it, all footage I recorded inside the headset always looked better in quality than what I actually experienced on both headsets so there is a difference

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@VRCentral You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not suggesting you 'zoomed-in' or altered anything untoward at all. What I'm saying is, if you blow the recorded video up to a level which covers your entire field of view (in the same way you experience when actually using the headset), then it will appear just as grainy.
      The point I'm making is about the same resolution of video being viewed in headset (full FOV), on a monitor (reduced FOV), or on a tiny smartphone screen (even lower FOV) is exactly the same. It's not a matter of the recording being artificially better quality than what is being passed through to the in-headset display.

    • @decadent.
      @decadent. 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@ImmersedRobot
      Yeah that is the point I was going to make.
      It is crazy how few people seem to understand that angular resolution is what determines perceived sharpness/clarity.
      Sony deceptively marketed the psvr2 as 4k which they obviously knew most people would take to mean 4k per eye.
      These kind of things are damaging to the VR industry. We need 4k per eye headsets to even deliver the equivalent of a 1080p tv !!

    Noise is directly related to the amount of light you have, in low light you get more noise. These are tiny sensors with tiny pixels, this is why they don't work that well in dimly light indoor lighting.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere 8 месяцев назад +1

      Your theory about Quest Pro is not correct, the reason is that Quest Pro has a higher megapixel color sensor.. meaning it has smaller pixels, meaning you get more noise and need more light. Quest Pro has a 16MP color sensor, while Quest3 has 4MP color sensors.

      Around 2:07 you did a through lens on quest 3. Well mine I crappy looking even with the studio lighting. Quite shocked when an old £100 iPhone or android from years ago can get better results. Even todays phones do great low light videos compared to the video I’m seeing in reasonable light. They could have also put another wide angle camera there to record what you are seeing instead of processing both cameras again. How is it, recorded video which was recorded on the same headset with same camera sensors look night and day different? I’d accept the lower crap quality when recording to save on resource, but I don’t think that’s what’s going on. 1080p photos and videos from a phone look great, but this can’t seem to achieve the same.

    My Quest 3 is going back - noisy image of the passthrough is least of worries: Quite visible uneven panel lighting (could live with it). Warnings about liquid or debris in USB-C port (straight out of box) when I boot the headset or plug/unplug the cable. One dead pixel on another panel, near the center area, some color tint on left side panel near the outer edge. Headset battery lasts very short time, max 2 hours, no matter what. Also, controller batteries drain way faster than with Q2, from 100% to 60% after 4-5x 1.5 hour sessions.

    I would like to know what is the light level at floor, misured with a decent luxmeter, otherwise it is just blablabla. My quest 3 passthrough with the lights that I usually have at home is terrible, very grainy, with a huge noise figure. Meta states "Minimum light level for passthrough is 50 lux". Without measuring, saying things like "You need a good light" have no meaning. Human eye works well with 5 lux to 80000 lux (minimum detection at 0.1 lux). People cannot easily discriminate from 30 lux or 80 or 50.

    • @VRCentral
      @VRCentral  7 месяцев назад

      The point of the video was to test the Quest 3 passthrough with different kinds of light, natural and artifical, as well as different kinds of artifical light. I was trying to see what people should aim towards as well as display the nature of the Quest passthrough to show that its not as advertised because so many people get confused on why their's is not as good.
      While I could have, and might later on, do testing on Lux levels, it wouldn't really do any good for me to say "you need an exact lux level of 80 to have optimal passthrough", I would bet that almost every single person that would see that video wouldn't have a means to measure their own light level. Therefore I would be just throwing useless numbers at them.

    You need more light for the Quest3's passthrough to look better and, you need more EVEN light... Actually, even though the Quest Pro's passthrough is grainier then the passthrough of the Quest3, the Quest pro is actually better in key ways. First, the Quest Pro's passthrough is being viewed on better LCD screens which has more dynamic range and better colors than the Quest3 which means that the resulting image is brighter, and has way more detail in the shadows. The Quest3's blacks are all plugged up and the whites are blown out.... The Quest Pro's passthrough is grainier, yes, but the overall sense of the space is much better than the Quest3.

    • @VRCentral

  • @CarbonatedTurtle
    @CarbonatedTurtle 8 месяцев назад +4

    After 2 weeks with the Quest 3 I'm realizing passthrough isn't much more than a gimmick. You basically need a spotlight pointed directly at you if you want to have clarity that's anywhere close to videos you see online, and even then, the warping makes it impossible to just walk around my house doing tasks while wearing it like they're trying to claim you can. I will admit, it is fun to use in some games like Demeo where the room around you is only in your peripheral vision and you're so focused on the game in front of you that you don't really notice the grainy, warped mess around you.

      It does depend on what you use it for. If youd rather have a device where you can imessage, browse the web, and and perform certain desktop/mobile actions but in an AR aspect I can see the Apple Vision being much better with much more clarity (at least I hope). With the Apple Vision not having any controllers I think that it might be hard to play most AR games on it in an enjoyable experience. I would be interested to see how it handles games though because apple devices have never been known to handle gaming approppriately. I would be interested to see what studios can afford to buy one though to make their games compatible with it though because of how expensive it is. With me having a fairly small channel I doubt I'm going to be able to afford one tbh :(

Such as web browsing, iMessage, FaceTime, streaming, meetings. For movies and gaming is going to be I think awesome! Because you can use your ps5 and Xbox with it. But what I’m more excited about is watching movies in that. All the bloggers that have tested the headset they have been extremely impress on how responsive it is. Also the fact that with the Vision Pro we will have more apps to use like Disney plus others, and with meta is only prime and Netflix and RUclips. Honestly I think the Apple experience will revolutionize again the way we do things. But meta quest is mainly for a different type of audience like gamers. I think the Apple Vision Pro will be the new iPhone of VR. Nothing has been that innovating since the lunch of the first iPhone in 2007 and this will be the next big thing of Apple!

    Get a new strap if you want to be taken seriously

      Well I want to wait until the good 3rd party headstraps start releasing before I buy anything. I'm not going to waste my money on the god-awful meta elite strap. Some companies have started to send me 3rd party straps though but they're not here yet. And the standard elastic strap isnt an uncomfortable death sentence like the Quest 2 standard strap.
      Also there is a thing in media creation called relatability. Even on my short form content if I wore the standard elastic Quest 2 strap as opposed to my $120 headstrap, I would get more views because people would see a headstrap that they don't have and feel out of the loop almost instantly.

      @@VRCentral did not think you would answer me. Lol. I know not everyone wants to get ripped off by meta. I bought the elite strap already and am waiting for Bovo to make more conversion kits. I have one with battery from my meta quest 2. Good luck with your channel I might subscribe. I am the OG of VR since oculus dev kit one.

      The two pointer fingers are referred to as shy in ASL. A hand gesture like this is frequently used when someone is embarrassed or timid. The emojis are frequently paired with the emoji, which can give them an extra edge of nervousness. It might be the bananas in your kitchen that triggered him. People like him tend to have a phallic complex I read.
