Concerning the Cylinder deactivation, here you have some more info.
If you select the 'A' mode, under certain conditions (low engine load and low-mid RPMs) the right bank deactivates.
Actually the process is as follows:
    1) the torque delivery is gradually shifted to the left bank by operating the 2 separate throttle bodies.
    2) Once all the torque has been fully transferred to the left bank, fuel injection and ignition are stopped on the right one.
    3) The right bank valve train is stopped as well by using specific collassable tappets. This actually increases fuel economy by reducing pumping losses.
    4) As the right turbo halts (no gases are flowing any more due to the fact that valves remain closed) lubrication to the turbine is interrupted through a specific solenoid valve (to avoid leakages).
Given the specific architecture of the 90 degrees V6, actually it behaves as if it was made of 2 separate 3 cylinders units, so when the right bank is deactivated, it is not perceivable (at all!). In my QV the only thing you notice is that the fuel consumption reduces visibly: while cruising on the motorway at around 120km/h you can still easily get 7 liters per 100 km.
This is an amazing engine (on an amazing chassis)!
    Well done Alfa

The designer of the engine, Pivetti, (who btw did also the latest Maserati engine on the MC20), said he was proud of the deactivation part of engine, rather than the engine design he borrowed from Ferrari (although Alfa has different valve angles/injection system)

I've been an Alfa fan since I was a kid because my parents used to have a 75, but, sadly, sold it way back when in 2006. I am happy that Alfa got back to it's "roots" with this car, making it RWD, even tho the FWD ones are still great. This is just astonishing car to look at. Will still look fresh even 10 years in the future.
On the side note, I finally obtained my first ever project car. A 96' Alfa 155 with 1.7 twinspark. Can't be more happy than I currently am, partly of that is thanks to this channel, making me always rememeber how great those cars are. Keep it up with the 145, and of course, all other great cars you have in your furious fleet :)

When i was a lad and passed my test at 17, i used to borrow my mothers car - an Alfa Alfetta - twin webers - wooden steering wheel - boy was that fun. This car is like getting 80-90 % of Ferrari - the engine !!!

I saw one of these at the weekend being put on the back of a breakdown truck and my heart sank for the owner. You see plenty of BMW's, Mercs & Audi's being towed away and my schadenfreude makes me secretly smug when they are stranded at the side of the road. But anyone who buys an Alfa, you have to have huge respect for their owners for getting something different. If my lottery numbers come in then I am definitely getting one of these., however I might also buy a back up Toyota just in case.

It shuts down one side. The engine effectively has two ECU, one per bank. The logics needed to make this work is quite elaborate. It must transfer power from one bank to the other to maintain total power output. It must keep reconnecting the shut off bank ever so often to avoid damaging the catalytic convertor. It must be ready to reenable the shutdown bank if the driver accelerates. Etc.

Greta video. You can select Race mode when your driving - I use Race mode mostly and whilst this mode does turn off the forward collison system, I find this incredibly annoying anyway - it would be great if this could be permanently switched off in all modes. Traction contract remains on enough and the torque vectoring diff makes corrections very easy so Race mode really can be enjoyed in most conditions. It’s not the big scary driving mode some reviews make it out to be.

  • @frothe42
    @frothe42 4 года назад

This Giulia sounds just like the Maserati Ghibli, and the Alfa design is much better than the stretched versions of the German marques.
I believe US 🇺🇸 versions did come only with the automatic, although I could be mistaken, the Giulia Ti came with a manual transmission, and AWD. And if course there is the Stelvio, with a QF version as well.
    Another smashing video!

    • @furiousdriving

You got a manual AWD in the US? That sounds like my perfect version (as a sport wagon!)

    • @frothe42
      @frothe42 4 года назад

@@furiousdriving I believed that the Giulia came with a manual transmission, but I must have been mistaken. I just went to their website and saw that the 8 speed automatic is standard across the line, down to the basic Giulia, starting about $41,000+. The Quadrifolio starts around $74,000+, $75,00 and the packages like Cold weather and navigation are standard, but the wheels and safety equipment package push the Quadrifolio around $80,000+, US, from the model you test drove. It looks like the red paint may have been a $2,000 option, and the wheels $500 (five hole cloverleaf) and the suite of safety equipment adds another $2,000.
Despite all of this, this vehicle is like a small Maserati, and that Maserati/Ferrari engine sounds exceptional !
That, and the Giulia comes in many different ranges, from Lusso, Sport, Ti, and even Carbon fiber edition! This is just the 4 cylinder version, which is quite powerful in its own right!
And what I really like about the Alfa is that it looks distinctive, not bland stretched or squashed version like all the German marques with styling that makes it difficult to identify model range.
I know you like a good manual transmission, and I do as well as long as it has a good clutch and smooth shifting, but many today, especially in the US 🇺🇸, DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A MANUAL, and I believe all the electronics make automatic shifting faster, and some automatics a bit more fuel efficient than a standard manual transmission.
I must say that having a manual here in the US is a theft deterrent since many do not know how-to properly drive one!
Although I am at an age where I prefer an automatic, but one where you can manually shift gears for downhill engine braking and for winter driving, even with such aids as ABS and TCS. And most drivers do not know that.

Look for 6 to 15 yrs old and Alfa beats them hands down by a mile. The Giulia as been quite solid and reliable. It’s not a Lexus or an Honda but it’s really solid and well built and a lot better engineered underneath than the germans.

I think the 159 it's still one of the best looking cars made in recent years. And it drives very well. The problem is, there is almost no "alfa" in the 159 :( Engines are mostly GM, the chassis was made by GM, it's FWD, It's very heavy and the interior are not made of the best materials. I would still buy it thought ;) I'd rather a beaten up 159 than a bmw 3 series (i see 320D everywhere, i'm feed up of even looking at them).

I love the look of these cars and almost bought one about three years ago, but decided to go for an older, more analog feeling BMW instead, and tune it to similar speed as this one. I am doubtful if it will be any cheaper in the end, but having a diesel which can keep a cloverleaf honest is a reward in itself I guess.

The thing is, with the manual gearbox, how many Giulia Quadrifoglios are they expecting to sell in the UK? The Giulia has been available in the UK for nearly 5 years and I still haven't seen one on the road, despite having a couple of good and very active Alfa dealers in my area. They probably wouldn't sell enough to cover the development costs for the right-hand drive with manual box, and that's no way to run a car company. Sadly the Giulia just seems to be a totally overlooked and forgotten car in the UK, which is a real shame. Seeing the odd Giulia here and there would make the street scene in towns and cities so much nicer, it really is such a pretty car...

Hi....Interesting review. However you mention you cannot put the car into Race mode unless its stopped???.... Think you will find you can ... you have to turn the nob and hold it in Race mode for a second or two and then release it.. and Hey Presto you have got the full fat Race version... Wouldn't recommend it in the rain though unless you are Kimi Raikkonen or you will probably end up in the nearest hedge!

    • @richardbdop8741

I think Clarkson amusingly said they were either too small, or in the wrong place. I'd say they seem to be slightly in the wrong place ie:- further forward than would be ideal. The first few times you get in and out it is possible to drag your backside across the B post. You soon adjust. I don't even notice it now after three and a half years and I'm 6' 1".

So I have worked with Alfa Romeo and other brands like BMW and Audi at promotional driving events all over the US and recently chatted with the head of Alfa USA in California. For the US Market, it just doesn't make sense any more from a financial point of view to have older-style clutched manuals in a production car. The majority of people just don't buy them, especially when much of their target market live near big cities with lots of traffic. If you've ever been stuck in LA traffic with a clutch, you will see how tired your left knee gets. Most younger people have NO IDEA how to drive a manual, either. Plus, with the reliable ZF transmission, you get more flexibility for cruising and higher mileage, fast shifts in Drive mode, and the ability to bang thru the shifts with the paddles in manual mode or even using the "stick" if you want that old-school feel. The auto transmission also works better in conjunction with all of the collision mitigation and cruise control functions. The car is so good in so many other aspects, that even the manual "purists" will forget about their lost clutch after driving it a while.

Better looking and better in many other ways than the competition, although when you ran through a list of that competition you left one out. For £30,000 less than the price of the Alfa there is the Kia Stinger. A few milliseconds slower than the Alfa, the Stinger is still a formidable machine and should not be dismissed.

Kia stinger is a nice car but it's not a competitor for the Giulia quadrifoglio. It's not 'milliseconds' slower. In fact it's more in line with the veloce in price and performance. 0/100 is only a big second slower than quadrifoglio but in the big boys league it's 0/200 what matters and the difference won't be a big second anymore.

I want one in green! Great looking car and, even with all the QV body kit on it, still relatively classy and understated looking compared to the silly overblown offerings from Audi or the fussy, tacky looking BMW equivalents. Only the Mercedes and Jaguar get close to this style wise, but neither are as cool as an Alfa.
My only complaint is that Alfa haven't maximised the potential of this platform - where is the coupe version, or the spyder? Can you imagine this car as a drop top!? Yum!
Also I wish they gave people the choice of a manual too. Having the choice is always a good thing. But still, a very exciting and desirable car that I would love to drive one day.
