A Tale of Quadrifoglio: Alfa's Attack on the C63 and M3!

  • Welcome back to RBR, and today it’s all about the new kid on the sports saloon block, it’s Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio!
Often mispronounced, the Giulia is a the first of a whole new era for Alfa, where they have vowed intense focus on new and class leading power to weight ratios, AWD and RWD systems and innovative engines for more driver focused cars. And this is the first of of the bunch, in flagship Quadrifoglio guise.
But what is Quadrifoglio? We see the badge on many a high end Alfa, but I was no exception to being ignorant about the legend that exists behind the badge. So in this review we will start by seeing the QV’s connection to Enzo Ferrari, and how the whole legend began.
Now the Quad badge is reserved for the most potent machinations to leave Alfa Romeo, of which none is more potent than their Giulia. You see until recently, whenever you thought of an Alfa Romeo, you’d think of front wheel drive cars since the Fiat take over, or perhaps the 4C. But ask an Alfa purist and they’ll tell you the last true driver’s saloon car from Alfa Romeo was the Alfa 75. A rear wheel drive saloon, hiding it’s true nature a sports car! And now the Giulia follows in it’s footsteps as the first RWD saloon from Alfa since that time. And what a special looking car it is.
This car is a direct competitor to the AMG C63S and BMW M3, and thus is one of the most fiercest fought areas of the Market. But the Giulia has the power and specs on paper to match. It’s a 2.9 V6 engine turbo engine, with 503 BHP, and 600NM of torque. It apparently shares much in common with a Ferrari V8 too!
But as good as it sounds on paper, this is the toughest market to fight in, with brilliant cars like the C63S and M3 that we have all driven and loved!
In this review we explore all this and more:
    - History of Quadrifoglio Badge
    - Exterior Design
    - Other variants
    - Interior Design
    - Exhaust sound, start up and revs
    - Performance Driving
    - The Sound factor
    - Comfort Daily Driving
    - Conclusion
Up next on on RBR is the New Mercedes Benz GLE walkaround! And see my Instagram for a big announcement for this channel too. :)

As a racing historian I have heard several times the story of Enzo Ferrari saying that "I have killed my mother" when a Ferrari beat Alfa Romeo for thefirst time on a race track. I am happy to say that he was wrong. Alfa Romeo is very much alive and kicking gorgeously through this beautiful Giulia. I have been a huge fan of Mercedes and BMW thanks to their engineering skills and racing heritage, but I want to give credit to Alfa for having revived passion, love, tradition and DNA in the automotive world. Personally I am not interested in having a huge display on the dash or having the interior look like a living-room designed by an architect. This Giulia offers a reminder what a real car is all about. We might be approaching the swansong of the petrol-engined performance cars, however this car will most likely be a classic in the future. I would love to own it, drive it on the limit and at the end of the day perhaps even have it in my living room. If I cannot own it, I still wish someone else would and we could enjoy watching them and listening to them. The automotive world need brands and cars like Alfa.

The Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio brings to the market something missing in the German segment. Alfa is art, sexy, refined but more raw, emotional, Italian. The German cars are exceptional, yet can feel a bit over calculated and sterile. To think Alfa, with Ferrari engineers, in their first attempt gives the world the Giulia and Stelvio... Bravo. It's been a long wait to have Alfa back in the states, and it was worth the wait.

Don't understand where the worry about tyre shredding is coming from and I don't hang around.
I agree with you about the brakes, that's because they are brake by wire, takes some getting used to (weight saving apparently).
Agree about the valves, there is a mod which I have which opens the valves in any mode, acts like a button on a remote key. Now I dont even stick it in Race mode. Now I get full on cold start valves open which is amazing. I agree AR should incorporate this same as the German's have.
But for chilling it's amazing in N, stick it in D and it becomes an animal.

I've had 3 Alfa's and well it was true love. 1st one a nice 1963 red Spider I bought 72, with their famous twin OHC, 4 cly. and of course the venerable 5 speed Alfas had used since the late 40's or early 50's. Not a race car yet driving the very responsive 2 seat convertible always made me smile. Next a primo 1983 GTV-6 2.5 liter V-6 OHC hemi with 152 HP, with 12K on the clock I stole for $7K in 1990. After 150,000 miles of near petal to the metal speeds, that wonderful V-6 still howled. finally sold it for $5K, a super sweet driving coupe. 8 yrs later a 91 Spider with 9K miles. Another jewel. I've waited since about 1998 for Alfa to regain its rightful place in the market for those special, unique (GTV-6) cars they made I spoke of. Until the new 4C came along, then this master piece,Alfa's finally back, and not 2nd or 3rd 6place is clear. Now I can smile again, a smile that only a modern Alfa can induce, such as their new master piece the Quadrifoglio.

I drive a Vulcano black Giulia. Yellow calipers, steel brakes. Sports seats (non-sparcos). I'm astonished with the level of agility and that front end is ridiculously quick. I almost crashed it the first day I owned it (on my way to get some coffee). Also, you're a fantastic reviewer!

Love this car visually and that growl.
Also sticks just by being an Alfa and rarer than the Beemers and Merc's.
I used to love seeing the 164 on the first in the 90s.
And on a personal note, I have an Italian friend named Guilia, so made me smile when this car came out. Met her in grad school (yup an American who went to school in Europe).

the fun with an Alfa Romeo, is that it's driven on the engine, so breaks are used less 'cause of gearing down in the corners and keeping the torque up..

I have watched about 15+ reviews of this car and have to say this is easily my favorite. The way you review and speak about the car isn't overly fluffed. Just facts, specs, and straight from one item to the next. I also haven't sat in the car yet, but was already thinking its classes lower then the C63. You make a good point to not make that judgment until I actually sit in it myself. Your review got me about as close as I could with out actually doing it. Solid work. Enjoyable watch. Thank you.

One of the best reviews I've seen. I have one and wish you would have touched a little bit more on the suspension. It's super comfortable for daily driving which is the biggest downfall the bouncy bouncy M3 has.
As a gear head that has owned about everything including M cars, AMG, Porsches, and Ferraris, the QV is incomparable. I just bought a 2015 911 GTS cabriolet as a drop top, and practically have to force myself to drive it. It's boring compared to the Alfa and feels slow. Every time I approach the Alfa to get in I feel like yelling "Goody goody goody!" After 8 months it has been perfect and the Porsche spent 5 weeks at the dealer.
And for the record after buying the QV I sold my Ferrari.

Great review as always. Lots of detail. I've owned a 2013 C63 and it was wonderful. I've driven various M3 models and M4, but just don't like them. BMW to me just aren't what they used to be. I have always, ALWAYS loved Alfa, but they were just never reliable. Sure they looked beautiful sitting in your driveway, but then you twist the key and well, things changed. I am very excited with the new Alfa's. This was my car of choice two years ago, however I am now looking to buy a 2018 Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Still, this is such a beautiful car, but now just as much so on the road as it is sitting in your driveway. I'm very happy for Alfa and will see how my search goes to fill that garage space. Again great review.

I love the interior of mine, and still love it more than a year into ownership, I am normally a BMW owner/buyer.
Like many I attributed the jerky slow speed nature of this car to the brakes, it is in fact NOT the brakes at all, it is the torque converter, you can confirm this for yourself by pulling both the paddle shifts on the approach to a red light stop, this drops it into N, then you will find you can stop perfectly smooth like any other car can, repeat the test without pulling into N and the jerkyness returns.
